I was a client of the manager pat year, I had gorgeous healthy hair that I wanted to transform from red to a lighter brown. Worst mistake I could have made. I went in and it was a gradual process to get me lighter. IN the process the manager back in March of 2018 destroyed my hair. In one appointment they left the toner too long! I was sooo unhappy with this awful ashy hair color. As professionals and customers we know the damage bleach does to someone's hair however as professionals perhaps maintaining the health of someone's hair should have been more important. Till this day I cry from the severe damage she caused. I was left with broken extra fragile unhappy hair. The service was fine nothing out of this world the end results were horrible. I contacted her via email when I had a question, she (manager) never replied. That was the nail in the coffin to never go back. read more

BOTCHED!! Unless you want a "layer cleanup" to turn into having half your hair chopped off, maybe rethink Roots. I want to share my experience in hopes of saving someone else from dealing with what I have recently. The pictures speak for themselves, but in order to protect Roots from claiming that "they did all they could" I will provide the full story. A few weeks ago, I went in for a highlight and haircut appointment. After my highlights were done, I was placed with a new stylist since mine was busy with another client. When I was handed off to the stylist who would be doing my haircut, I was not informed of her lack of experience. I simply asked for layer cleanup and trim. I am getting married in 5 months, so it was important for me to keep the length I had been growing out for well over a year. Since I had been a client here for a year, they were well aware of my upcoming wedding. What happened next still blows my mind and I don't know how it went so wrong. They placed me with the inexperienced stylist and she started in the back. I couldn't see what was happening. No one was checking on us throughout this until it was too late. She did not stop cutting to ask for help even though there were 5 other stylists in the salon at that time. Next thing I knew, I was surrounded by two different stylists (the one who did the damaging cutting just disappeared) telling me that a mistake had been made. They showed me the mirror and I broke into tears immediately because my hair was ruined. The one thing I requested was to keep length due to my upcoming wedding, and they couldn't even do that right. The other stylists showed me what happened and told me that the only solution would be to get extensions. I have never had extensions but I agreed and they offered to help. They set me up for a consultation the next day at their Brookfield location. They set up the consult and tried to charge me for the color service I received! I was in tears at the front desk because they cut off half of my hair and tried to make me pay for the color. I refused. Next day I went to Brookfield and the extensions they offered were keratin fusion. I wasn't sure what this would mean for my natural hair, so after a little research, I quickly learned that this kind of extension binds to your natural hair and when it is removed, it will cause serious damage to the integrity of the natural hair. I was already nervous to allow them to try to fix this issue but wanted to give them a chance to make it right. The kind they offered me would have expensive maintenance and would damage my natural hair - I opted out of having them provide the extensions. These would not have lasted until my wedding since there is no way to move them up, so clearly they had zero forethought with this offered "solution." I thanked the stylist at Brookfield for offering and said I wasn't comfortable with this product being put in my hair. She gave me the contact details for the owner and manager and I said I would be reaching out to them as I expected to be reimbursed for the extensions I would need to get elsewhere. The manager of the OC location emailed me to apologize for what happened, but said if I refused to have it fixed by a Roots employee, they would not help with the cost. After I had extensions put in a few days ago by a stylist elsewhere who specializes in invisible bead extensions (no damage to natural hair and less expensive maintenance), I sent them the receipt and asked if they could help. Their reply to this blew me away. They apologized again for what had happened, but then said they would not pay and called me out for not paying for the color services the first night after they ruined my hair. I am thoroughly disappointed and frustrated by this experience. They could not manage a simple haircut and their only solution was to offer me something that would damage my natural hair and not even last until my wedding. They also tried to charge me while I was in tears after they had botched this haircut so badly. Stay far, far away from any Roots Salon. read more

The stylist was pleasant. The only thing that was good was the color. I have never had my hair cut with an Electric cutters. All salons I have been to use scissors and razors to cut, layer and blend . I looks like I was a 8 year old kid with the results .. My friends said It also looked like I had a bowl put over my head and got cut around it .. Needless to say I will not return.. Especially when I was charged $148 ,and for what ....Never I have I paid more that $98 . If its so expensive to be in Drexel Square and they have to make the customers pay. The salon itself was decent, clean and upbeat. Receptionist was very nice. However the fees involved with this establishment are insane and not like any other salon I have ever been too. The "not upfront" pricing scheme, is just that. How are you going to tell me there was a $12 "product surcharge" for a spritz of hairspray? The fact that this was not disclosed was rude and thieving. The question I was asked was "is it ok if I put product in your hair?", not that there was a $12 surcharge for products being used on you. My Balayage did not come out well and I am very disappointed that I paid $250 for something that looks worse than it came from a box. I have chemical burns along my entire hairline where I think the dye must have not been wiped off well enough or stayed on too long. Sadly, my stylist was very kind and nice I just think this is a deceitful place and there prices and fees are outragous especially since it's in a small suburb, not downtown Milwaukee. read more

As soon as I walk in, I feel comfortable. Very friendly staff and great hair cutting/ brow waxing service. The pedicure is wonderful and a great treat. They do a foot mask and exfoliation which I have never had before. They do not have a UV light so it takes a long time for the polish to dry. I would not recommend the polish change here. read more

The stylist 'didn't have time' to do the color treatment that I wanted (even though I sent a pic weeks prior & had the appointment booked 3 months in advance) so we did a basic all over color, only to realize when I got home that she very obviously missed the whole underneath/back part of my head and several other blotches (she never showed me the back in the mirror upon finishing). And my cut/trim was uneven all around. The whole service felt very rushed and was extremely overpriced for the service that was provided. I"ve bee going to Roots Salon for 15+ years. I'm always happy with the cut, color etc. Stylists are always knowledgeable and so nice to chat with if you choose to. Recently, I had my roots touched up, I think $85 is overpriced so I called to find out why so much (you don't get a receipt for services or products). I was told it was $73 for the "dusting" or root color and a $12 service fee. Too much $$ in my opinion. read more

A friend and I had pedicures scheduled together. When we arrived, we were told that either we had our pedicures one after the other or we could reschedule one to another day. We opted for one after the other since we were already there. The girl that did my pedicure had no solution to take off my gel color so she had to hand file it off which took over an hour. I have scabs on my toes where she filed my skin. Only my feet were massaged and barely. No hot oils, no leg massage. One warm washcloth for both feet. No sugar scrub. I ended up with regular polish, no top coat. No dryer or the spray that dries. It took almost 2 hours. My friend ended up canceling her pedi. So, worst pedicure I've ever had and I've been getting pedicures for years. So much for trying a new place. We'd never go back. read more

Wanted an appt. With a stylist to help me figure out what I wanted for a cut and what cut fits my face. That will coat me a 75.00 cut...willing to pay for that help!!. Stylist just asked me what I wanted and when I asked her for help she had nothing to say!! Finally I had to go through my phone and pick out a style ( very upsetting).. she cuts my.hair and blow drys it straight to my head and asks me.how I like it. I had an appointment for a haircut and this was my first time there and my last. I do not get haircuts often. When I booked the appointment they told me the service included a wash, the haircut, and a blow-dry. Once I sat down the stylist told me do you want a wash or a blow-dry because I cannot do both I don't have time! I believe her name was Livvy. If she didn't have time they why did they book my appointment for that time I don't understand that! I don't usually post reviews I had to set up a Yelp account to do this one but I was compelled. I went in for a cut and partial highlight. I scheduled online to get a $20 new customer promotion I did not request a new person but I was assigned one. My hair came out polka dotted. As soon as I got home I called in and requested a correction they were very nice two days later I went back for a correction. After additional 2 1/2 hours in the chair my hair looks no different, another new person was assigned to me for the correction, just graduated in December, she had to stop and ask questions from the manager several times. I paid $180 for the service plus a tip for the both girls even though my hair was no better. I do not recommend anybody spend their money here. I can't imagine what you pay for a non-beginner if this is what I got for $180. read more

I had a gift card for $25 and needed an eyebrow wax. It was my first time visiting the salon. I scheduled same day, so that was convenient. The staff was friendly too. The aesthetician completed the waxing part then was going to send me off. Usually my brows need bit of plucking and trimming with scissors to make them look perfect. I had to ask that they be trimmed with scissors but she didn't go back and get any stray hairs with tweezers, I had to do this at home. This service is not worth $25 based on the quality that I got. read more

Katlyn! Unprofessional, embarrassing and hurtful to the core!! Wednesday I had my third or fourth appointment with Katlyn. (Root touch-up, color, partial highlights and 24/7 colorful highlights, blow dry and flat iron). No complaints ever. No issues between us that I was aware of. Everything seemed fine when I came for this appointment. Chatted like usual. When finished she walked me up to the front desk and proceeded to tell me, in front of other staff AND other customers and out of the blue that she would no longer do my hair and handed me a card with the name of another stylist, who she had already spoke with that agreed to take me on and the managers contact info on it. I was shocked! How totally unprofessional to throw me under the bus in front of other staff and customers! I asked her for an explanation and she said we weren't a good fit. When I asked if we couldn't step somewhere more private and discuss this she refused, right in front of everyone and walked away. Like an idiot I paid my bill, stupidly left a tip and walked out in tears! Later on I emailed Autumn, the manager, and asked her for an explanation as to what had transpired because I had NO clue. (I felt like a child who had been reprimanded when I wrote it). As the night went on and I could think more clearly I realized how mad I was at being humiliated by Katlyns unprofessional actions and would appreciate speaking to her about what happened. Well it's Friday night, Autumn was in the salon both Wednesday and today but obviously didn't have the time to respond. When I called tonight to see if she was in and if I could speak with her I was told she was gone for the weekend and wouldn't be back until Tuesday. After spending close to or more than $2000 at Roots in the past year and a half for me, for my daughters and wedding party's hair and make up, referring other people there, I feel as though I deserve an explanation as to what the hell happened! The stylist was working on another client at the same time and seemed distracted. Autum did my hair today. By the time I got home my hair was straight I have thin hair and I've been growing it out for a wedding. For some reason she decided to send my hair out. And beauty school they will tell people don't ever send out a person who has thinning hair. I worked really hard these last few months to get the fullness on top and on the sides. It was cut off on May 3, 2024. I grew this out for my nieces wedding only to come home comb through my hair and I have a lot of long scraggly pieces. She said she would walk me through the haircut to only tell me she would cut off 3 inches. When getting my hair shampooed, she concentrated on the top of my scalp, my scalp going down to my neck and never really scrubbed the sides of my hair. I had called and told her that my hair doesn't hold. I wanted to have the wall products used in my hair, but she use something else instead. When I left, I wanted to buy wall products but instead she pulled the product she used on me, which did not obviously last in my hair. I am very bummed because all my hard work has been made a mess. After reading her profile, I realize she is a color person and it seems she does a lot of long hair styling. When I called for my first initial appointment, they gave me to Autum. I liked her, colorfulness her outgoing spirit. I specified a haircut. I got a hair cut, and a thinning job done on my hair. I wanted body for my body. Instead, I got flat hair now. I will be returning my products to get the WOW Products. The quality of my haircut I would say is a three. Now I am stressed out to think. How am I gonna wear my hair that day when the fullness I work so hard to grow 02 is gone. I like the length being gone because of the old hair dye is gone. But I don't know what to do with hair that you pull love that has all these weird hair sticking out. I will have to try to fix them myself. It's just sad when you get a haircut and you have to come home be stressed out and then find a way to fix it. I was reading other girls reviews and I might connect with somebody else there? But I won't be going back to Autum.. just being honest. And that is very hard for me to be. oh, and one more thing. I asked her if she could do my hair the day of the wedding. She came back and said she was going away either that weekend or the weekend before. I don't normally leave reviews but this salon has wasted enough of my time why not spend 10 min putting together an honest review of this place. I am giving only one star based on my hair color experience with Megan, the manager follow up and how long I usually have to wait for my pre-scheduled appointments. Do not get your hair color done by Megan unless you want something you didn't ask for. She is very unsure of herself and doesn't deserve the title she has at all. I wanted her to bring up my blonde hair closer to the roots and instead she gave me 4" of uneven black/dark brown roots in PERMANENT hair dye. I never once said anything about wanting permanent hair color and also she never mentioned that she was putting permanent hair color on me. Isn't that like communication 101? Make sure your client is aware of what you are doing to them. I was turned around facing the back wall the whole time so I never had the opportunity to question her color that she was putting on me until it was too late. I didn't mind that she wasn't chatty with me but she never once said anything like do you need a drink or even provide any update on how the process is coming or what's the next step. I am so upset that my hair is now ruined because I've never had PERMANENT hair color put on my hair, it's much darker than my natural hair color so now that my hair is growing out it just looks silly. I left in tears and it took the manager about a day and a half to get back to me. I was told that Megan gave me permanent hair color because I said that I had grays I want to cover up. I laughed when I heard that because that is an outright lie. I'm 29 and have never had grey hair yet. If I did I would for sure have been comfortable mentioning it but I simply don't have grey hair so it's outrageous that Megans excuse was that I said I had grey hair.... wouldn't you see the grey hair if I did? The hair "fix" apt was rescheduled and it did end up looking better but was I happy, no, I was just less embarrassed. The manager is rarely in the salon and her solution was one "free" hair fix apt, although the problem that Megan caused could not be completely fixed with just one apt. So I scheduled a 2nd apt and was going to pay to have that done but just returned home because I was waiting for a half hour for an appointment that I scheduled a month ago. That is just too long to sit with a mask on, waiting for a scheduled appointment that is going to already take about 2+ hours. The manager never met with me to apologize in person or follow up over the phone, which I felt was very unprofessional. I've been coming to this salon for a few years and was only unhappy with the services I received from Megan. But now that I've had to wait to get my hair done to fix the issue again, I'm just really upset. As a stylist, if you have scheduled appointments you should at least let the customer know that it's going to be another 20+min, because as customers we do have lives we need to get back to. I'm really disappointed that it came down to me needing to write a negative review about this salon. If you're getting hair color done I would highly recommend going somewhere else. Went in for highlights, wanting to drastically lighten the hair framing my facing into blonde. She mixed the developer and applied it and THEN stated I might need a second round of highlights (another $150) to get as light as I want, but she didn't tell me my hair would not change at all for the $150 I was spending today. MY HAIR LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME AS BEFORE I WALKED IN THERE, but there is a light spot on my dark blue pants where the stylist dripped developer on me. She stated I would get a $10 discount for my birthday. I did not. I also didn't get a new costumer discount like their website said I should. I'm including pictures of my hair and you can decide for yourself if you would like to pay $150 for blonde highlights to walk away with my hair. Highly dissatisfied, never ever going back. Took my 5 year old here as a birthday present. She's been wanting a real salon experience lately and figured this was the best time. I called ahead for a simple cut and bang trim. We were booked with Hannah who was excellent with my daughter. She was friendly and sweet and very accommodating to her needs. Above all else she was quick and thorough, which is very important since kids can get bored easily. During the process, Kimberly, another stylist came over and entertained my daughter while Hannah worked. It was all very pleasant and a wonderful experience for her. first of all, stylist was running behind an hour. Stylist Charged $50 for a shampoo and simple haircut. didn't even blow-dry/ style after. Stylist Told my daughter she didn't have time because "I leaves in 15 minutes". put tons of product in her hair that made it feel crispy and look like wet poodle. my daughter left crying. This is not a high end salon or day spa so it should not be charging those prices. You can go to Neroli down town with 10x the ambiance and customer service and pay the same price. Tbh it was over priced! Wrong price advertised and I was angry. You cannot advertise a Black Friday sale at 30% off total for new appointments and then charge more to begin with. The highlights were listed at 141.00 the color corrector was 36.00 and my total was well over 200.00. I did not get my discount for Black Friday and was charged more than quoted. You obviously pay because there is no other choice.... Truly think I was scammed. I didn't get a receipt because it wasn't offered and I paid in cash. Thinking I will go elsewhere and deciding if I should make a further complaint to the better business bureau. If this happened to me I am sure it has happened to other clients. A follow up to my earlier review - I'm still pretty traumatized by this. All of this is horrible. I honestly hate going out in public with how terrible my hair looks. Which makes doing my job a task, rather than a joy. The worst part is that the refund that I was promised, has never been issued. And every time I call, still, ends up in a message being left, with no return phone call. What a shameful way to do business. I tried Roots for the first time and was not at all impressed. My stylist listened to what I had to say, made some suggestions and although the hair cut turned out fine, I don't love it and I felt like I didn't much matter after a little bit. My stylist had someone else take over my blowout (couldn't tell you who..they never spoke to me) to speak to another customer and I just felt like as a whole, to the people who work there I was just pretty much invisible. They talked me into their rewards program but it was a waste of $15. I don't intend to go back. The service (and I use that term loosely) is definitely NOT worth the $70 they charge for a haircut. read more
