You're missing out on some icy cold brews, fantastic food and maybe live music if you're brave enough to come in. Rosie's Cantina looks a little like an old jailhouse from the outside, but inside, it's full of life and character. The waitress told me it's always been a bar here near the southern border, and you can feel that history in the walls. The big wraparound bar is the centerpiece, surrounded by a mix of bikers, families, and regulars who clearly know this place well. It's $2 taco and beer night, and the tacos are worth every bit of the hype--deep-fried shells that are crisp and golden, filled generously and served piping hot. The salsa is superb, spicy with real flavor, not just heat. The waitresses are friendly and striking, and the overall vibe feels both local and lively. There's even a small stage that hints at live entertainment on other nights. Rosie's isn't fancy--it's authentic, a little gritty, and completely El Paso. A perfect Tuesday night stop. read more

This place was a recommendation on a friend who told me that the singer of the song El Paso was honored in this bar/restaurant. It's very close to the Texas New Mexico border and from the outside it looks like a very sketchy place. I must tell you as a tourist it was not. Although we had to park on a dirt parking lot the inside of the bar looked like a roadhouse. It was a Friday night, so it was already busy and plenty of tables were already filled. We sat near the bar and ordered food. Both my girlfriend and I had the three taco play and my God were they absolutely incredible. Perfectly crispy tacos with ground beef, cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The beans and rice were really good, but I wish there had been more on the plate. The red and green salsas were really spot on. I got a bit overzealous and ordered their rosa's nachos. I couldn't finish them obviously, but I did enjoy the important elements. My girlfriend had a mango margarita which she delightfully enjoyed. I would totally recommend anyone visiting to come here. There are a lot of regulars that come on a Friday night and they drink a lot. They also have live bands, which were really good. 5 stars for service - the bartender did a GREAT job even though they were slammed. 5 stars for ambiance if it's your vibe - I'd describe it as country-meets-rock (and they have live music regularly!) 1 star for food- I have to say that I was really disappointed. The flautas were among the worst I've ever had. They weren't hot and they had no flavor. My rice was also cold. Best thing on the plate were the beans, and they were about average. To be fair, I personally don't like most Tex Mex, and this menu felt more Tex Mex than Mexican to me. Rounding up to 4 stars, but 3.5 is more accurate. read more

This is somewhat of a "dive bar" but the food is good as is the service. We arrived at about 11:30 AM and were just ahead of the lunch crowd, and I do mean crowd. The place was almost empty when we arrived. It was open seating and our server greeted us promptly. Rosa's has daily specials during the week for $13. Friday was shredded beef tostadas with rice and beans. The good was good and the price was unbelievably reasonable. The starter was a bowl of cabbage soup. It was followed by a basket of house made flour tortilla chips and green salsa. The building has a sheet metal roof and western signs hanging on the walls. It has a small gift shop with "Rosa's Cantina" merchandise. "Out in the West Texas Town of El Paso...". The place soon filled up with locals, not so much tourists. There were only three servers, and they were "busting their butts" to keep up with the crowd. You could tell most of the crowd were locals as they were wearing mechanics uniforms, nurses uniforms, and a lot of people knew others, greeting them as they were walking through the door. The only disappointment was we did not meet "Feleena." If I am back in El Paso I would happily go there again. Yes, a "hole in the wall dive bar," but with good food. read more

I had never been to Rosa's Cantina before, and it was awesome. The experience is delightfully underwhelming--and that's the best part. If you love shredded beef tacos and Tecate, this is the place. It's simple, no-frills, and the food is really good. Definitely bring your out-of-town friends--it's so cute and charming. They have karoke on Wednesday and mariachis on Thursday. If you're a Marty Robbin's fan passing through El Paso you must stop in. The historic cowboy vibes are definitely felt. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try much food, but the Mole did look fantastic. A few of their classic margaritas really hit the spot in the dry heat. Hands down this place gets a 5 star review!! Not only is it nostalgic for my generation, it's also simply a fun place with down to earth comfort food coming out of the kitchen! Service is wonderfully local, meaning each and every visitor is treated like a friend or family member. First time or tenth time, you're treated like family! Some folks may not appreciate that as it may come off as aloof but we love it and Felicia is now my best friend! The place is decorated just like I would expect an old cantina to be! Rustic! Marty Robbins on the wall and jukebox, checkered tablecloths and wood furniture. The food is Mexican comfort food! This establishment is much more than a bar, it is an iconic business that is an El Paso landmark. The casual and delicious menu is wonderfully prepared. It's been a minute but this place was one of my favorites places for eating and libations! I love the atmosphere in this place, and noticed some remodeling work done. Anyways the place is still nice the beer is still served in giant mason jars and the beer is cold. My favorite meal is the chicken tacos plate. Usually the green sauce there is extremely hot but tasty. On this occasion the green sauce was ok. While out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I decided to grab some lunch (you thought I was going to break into song, huh?) Tired of the chain restaurants, I decided to hit up a local legend. I have made many trips to El Paso, but never had the time to give this place a shot. I honestly thought this place was a myth and did not exist. I hopped into my car and took a little drive. Rosa's is located located in what is referred to as Smeltertown, so the side of town it is in looks pretty rough. Furthermore, the exterior of Rosa's looks pretty sketchy. The construction on Doniphan also does not help for the appeal. Hopefully El Paso gets off their rears and finishes the road. Anyhow.. I digress.. Upon walking in Rosa's, the inside was a stark contrast from the outside. There were a lot of open tables, with a nice bar in the back. Lots of friendly faces around. Very welcoming environment. You have to seat yourself, so I took a seat and perused the menu. A nice young lady (is that you, Felina?) came over and took my drink order. I perused the menu while she went to grab my beverage. The menu had a lot of yummy food on there, most of it Mexican. Looking at the menu, Rosa's Mexican food was more New Mexico-ish, and probably more authentic. I am not a fan of that style and favor the Tex-Mex variety. So I opted for a cheeseburger and French fries. Also, to be fair, I was burnt out on Mexican food anyhow. My expectations were pretty low, but I was hoping for the best. I sat and patiently waited on my food. I enjoyed the music piping through the speakers and just sat and people watched. My waitress then returned shortly and brought me some chips and salsa. Looking at the menu, they usually charge for these, but my waitress was kind enough to bring me some on the house. The chips and salsa were great. I'm usually not a fan of green salsa, but this was tasty. In good time my burger and fries arrived. The presentation was as expected. I dove right in. The burger was tasty. However, it was dry. The cheese was minimal, and the buns were decent. The fries tasted like frozen fries, but I was slightly impressed. I liked the seasoning and the crunch when you bite into them. You can tell the burger is not one of their popular dishes, as it seemed not much effort was put into making it. I finished my food, walked to the back to purchase a shirt, and headed out. I was totally expecting to hear Marty Robbin's sing El Paso, but my timing must have been off. I am sure the staff get tired of hearing that song though. Would I recommend Rosa's? Yes. I would. I would not make a special trip to go here though. If I had it to do again, I would have just walked in, bought a shirt, and left, so I could say I had been to Rosa's. I would give the food a solid three stars. The service, atmosphere, history, and overall charm of this place bumps it up to four stars. If you are solely going to drink, I would probably give this place five stars, as the bar did look nice, and the crowd looked tame. I was not there to drink, so I cannot speak on that. Loved this place! We took a family member from out of town here and they loved it. It's one of our favorites in El Paso. They have such a great casual laid back atmosphere and the food is always fresh hot and comes out quick. The staff super friendly. Most of us are familiar with the song and if for whatever reason your travels take you to the remote town of El Paso, why then of course you need a destination point like the little Rosa's Cantina. Stop in not for food's sake but Marty's sake and check this little "hole in the wall" out. I'm totally about patronizing establishments that are legendary because of song. For example, several years ago I stopped in at Lee How Fook in Philadelphia's Chinatown where I opted for something other than a big bowl of beef chow mein. (Warren Zevon was actually singing about Lee How Fook in London; Philly is home to the only Lee How Fook in the U.S.) By all means, check my review of the place. Lee How Fook was delicious. Rosa's? Not so much. Still, I left happy. The food here is very much New Mexico style, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's presented hot and fresh ... but it's pretty much average, if not bland. Indeed, Rosa's offers a green house salsa with some bite, but that's all it has ... bite. Beer is cold here. Service is good. If I should ever return to this Mountain Time corner of the world, I'll just order a beer and listen to the rock music piped through the ceiling-mounted speakers. read more
