Like other NYSDOT Region 9 rest areas (found along this stretch of NYS 17/I84 as well as I88), this location consists of a small bungalow-style bathroom facility featuring American Standard toilets and urinals and modern high-powered Xlerator hand dryers set back a short distance from the highway with easy on/off access and plenty of parking. If you're expecting the full service travel plaza experience of Thruway rest areas with their Starbucks and massage chairs and E-Claw machines you might be disappointed. However, while this facility is limited in amenities it is more than ample for what you need it for.

I personally just didn't have a great experience at this stop. The inside looks lovely but it had an unpleasant odor that is hard to describe. it's possible my stop was affected by the other people who were there, so take this review with a grain of salt, but the vibes were just off. It looked clean, but felt very dirty. I don't know how else to explain it. All of the people I encountered were rude; not just one person, but multiple people. I wanted to get a photo of the sign before we headed out and there were two different families just letting their kids play and climb on the sign while myself and another person were trying to snap a photo. I had to wait a good 8-10 minutes for them to leave to snap one photo of the sign without random children on it. I have nothing against kids playing and waited patiently, but there was a literal playground for children right across from the sign. It's more just that people didn't seem to be very kind or considerate here. Again, this is a fine stop if you need to get off the road and there are things to see here, I just purse didn't personally feel this welcome center was very welcoming.

A travel plaza is a place where human beings briefly admit they have bodies. We eat and drink as quickly as we possibly can, we wash our hands, and then we climb back into our machines and hurtle north or south with emptier bladders and greater optimism. The good news is that after its recent renovation, the Plattekill Travel Plaza looks exactly like every other rest stop along the Thruway. This is not an insult. Sameness can be a comfort. You walk in and your brain says, I know how this works. There will be light, food, and a restroom that I do not have to search for and, more likely than not, will not frighten me. The building is airy and generous with natural light. Due to complete glass walls on two sides, sunlight spills in as if this particular corner of the Hudson Valley has been invited inside to keep an eye on us. There is a modest parade of quick serve restaurants greatest hits. You can secure chicken at Chick-fil-A, provided you're not traveling on the Lord's day of course, bread and soup at Panera Bread, a pretzel the size of your forearm at Auntie Anne's, and caffeine at Starbucks. There is also a respectable Applegreen convenience store, open 24 hours a day, which is where we did our foraging. We emerged with snacks and drinks, the sort of provisions that make you feel prepared for a journey that will last another two hours. The restrooms are large and generally clean. This is progress, particularly when compared to the pre-updated plaza. Not much more you could reasonably demand from a building whose chief purpose is to host people who are in a hurry. Parking is the only real adventure. Spaces are somewhat limited, and at busy times vehicles line the access road like a small and determined migration. The snow and freezing temperatures this winter have not improved matters. Slush narrows lanes and turns simple geometry into a test of faith while snow piles reduce available spaces considerably. You may find yourself circling once or twice, contemplating the nature of patience. On the whole, this is a solid rest area along I 87. It performs its duties without drama. Once inside, you could be almost anywhere, which may be the point. Highways are about going somewhere else. This plaza understands this. It feeds you, tidies you up, and sends you back into the wide and indifferent world with a warm coffee in your hand and crumbs on your shirt. Four stars.

The trucks use the areas on both sides for parking, so keep an eye out for them too. The rest area has the usual with restrooms, vending machines and a spot for dog walking. It's nice and green here, a great break from fighting with highway traffic. Unlike New York, Pennsylvania does not have limits on how long you can stay and I did not see any signs. Regular vehicles park to the left when you pull off the highway and big rigs park to the right. Plenty of space to walk about if you needed to and plenty of space to take a seat. Inside it was well maintained. Facilities were clean and in order. I putzed around outside for a while and walked the grounds. They were mowing grass the day I was here so you kind of had to keep moving to not be in their way. Things to note, aside from table/picnic area, there is a pet area available. But the pet areas don't seem to be maintained as well as the rest of the area, disposal bags were missing even though there was a place for them. Police station is on premise.

The yogurt, blueberry, milk and granola were a nice start to the day. I really liked the coffee pot and the coffee stayed hot for hours! I really enjoyed sitting on the porch having my morning coffee. I even heard some coyotes howling and it was perfect! I booked a trip back in October. I can't wait!

The cabin was about a 2.5hr drive from Brooklyn, NY. Pulling up to the house, the entrance was beautiful and with the snow settled in, everything was breathtaking. The Stone Cottage was sooooo amazingly cozy! Walking in, all you want to do is cozy up on the couch. The entire cabin was so peaceful. It was 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and you can tell that it was recently renovated. We weren't able to enjoy the outside as much because of the snow but Luna, my dog, had a lot of fun jumping around in the snow on the gated deck! We walked to the area with the bridge and the pond which was lovely to look at. There are absolutely no complaints- I just can't wait to be back during the warmer months to enjoy the outdoors with Luna more!
