They recently JUST resumed running, and I booked my mother and myself on one of their (re)inaugural rides. We opted for the upgraded tickets with meal service (afternoon tea), and we loved it! - The actual experience at the station was smooth, and the conductors were upbeat and friendly. - The three course meal, which was handled by a local cafe (Cafe Mornings), was tasty and filling, and the two people who handled service were warm, welcoming, and friendly. Things to note: - Not sure if this is is how it works for all rides, or even if there will be different routes available, but FYI, this was essentially the same route ( out and back), done twice (so the same actual route 4x). - There were no restroom facilities available during the ~2 hour ride, but what they did was return to the station at about the halfway mark, at which point people could debark to use the facilities and then get back on. Overall, this made for a great mother-daughter outing, and I would gladly recommend this dining and sightseeing experience to anyone looking for something a little different for a future outing in the Catskills. read more

We did the Father's Day breakfast train and it was amazing, the food was exceptional, from a local cafe in Margaretville called Café Marguerite. My boyfriend rode this train back in 1991 with his grandparents and loved telling me about it when we take trips upstate, I'm so happy they were able to get back open to the public after being closed due to COVID. We are excited to hear about more events and bring our friend and family. read more

Relaxing ride through the northern Catskills. Smooth railroad ride with beautiful views of the changing landscape of Autumn in the mountains. Would have loved to have some music. Would definitely recommend! read more

The new route that the train takes is nothing special. Going to Roxbury is much more scenic. Was more enjoyable. Loved being on the outside train. Hope eventually they go back to old route. The conductor was very nice and gave our friends info they asked about. read more

Honestly, this was pretty boring and I wouldn't recommend it unless it was a rainy day and you had nothing else to do. You travel along a corridor that goes through numerous backyards of homes that have seen better days. If you enjoy riding through a green tunnel without much to see, this is for you. While the staff was very nice, I was disappointed there was no commentary during the ride. I was hoping to hear some history about the railroad and/or line itself. Unfortunately, there was nothing; pretty much a good reflection of our thoughts on this attraction. One semi-positive note is the display on the railroad, housed in the station. It gives a decent orientation to the rail line and the people & towns it served. Unfortunately, even there the exhibits showed neglect and weren't very clean. read more

This train ride was far from fun for me. I reserved tickets online and was told that train leaves at a different time (half hour from the time stated on my ticket). I was extremely frustrated I had to wait. Train ride was beautiful with the scenery but the amount of smoke the train emits is slightly unbearable. read more

When I saw photos of the1948 "Olive Branch" Budd observation car, formerly NYC, and tavern car, formerly Minneapolis and St Louis, I knew that I had to ride as a passenger. Included in the ticket is a guided tour of the the Roxbury Depot Museum and a soft drink and snacks. The ride in the cars was lonely, but I have never had the chance to ride "first class" before. The observation car is unique because she had been involved in rear end collision and if you look at her outside exterior, you'll note a change in her streamlined construction. Another added plus the locomotive, ALCO D&H RS-36, 1963, turbo, pulling the train (some of the other rolling stock the ex- Pennsylvania RR MP54 E6TC 1950 cars). Eventually, the "Red Heifer" J G Brill ex- NYC M-405 gas electric RPO will again ride the rails!!!! read more

Train to Roxbury: Mostly great experience. A blast for a train loving 3 y.old son. Yes, there's diesel smoke; don't take it on a very hot, windless day and you'll be fine. My main issue is with the rush at Roxbury: Why allow only a few minutes there, while the locomotive switches sides? There's not enough time to spend at the depot museum alone, not to mention also seeing the locomotive hook up. Give half an hour, let people wonder a few blocks to Roxbury main street! Sell more snacks and souvenirs at the museum to make money. Let people stretch their legs. Some reviews commented on "filthy" train cars; they're not perfectly restored (only some windows still open, for example), but they were sufficiently clean and comfy. Open cars more than make up for it (watch out for slippery decks after the rain). Careful with finger pinch points on the moving ramps between the cars; my little one got his finger pinched there. The route is surprisingly scenic, especially with swollen rivers and ponds after prolonged rains - forest, water, wetlands, distant hills; road crossings, farm cows and wild herons. We also had a great time walking along the tracks in Arkville exploring the old rusting locomotives and carriages after everyone was gone. read more

We just took the scenic train ride and I'm sorry to say we weren't really impressed. There was no narration of any kind to kind of give us an idea of what we were looking at, which seemed to be at least half people's backyards and streets with just some nature-y bits. When the train stopped at the end of the line, no one knew that was the other station, or no one in my area of the train. People (including me) thought something was wrong as they unhitched the engine and had it circle around to attach to the other side to bring us back. After that the ride back was so boring I almost fell asleep. I think this would be better if you're really interested in trains, have a kid that's interested in trains, or go on the special rides. If you're in the market for something edutaining, this isn't really for you. The little gift shop and museum were kind of neat, though. And the lady was very nice about letting us change our tickets when we arrived late on the day I bought the tickets for. read more

I took a ride on the Rip Van Winkle flyer and it was fantastic. The rail cars were beautifully redone to match its original 1940's 1950's style and we were allowed to bring our own snack and drinks. (1st class tickets were worth it!). The views were average during the actual ride but the experience dining in the cars and talking with other passengers during the hour + ride made up for it! Groups can even schedule catered meals in a private dining car! Very cool experience and worth checking out. We traveled over 2 hours and spent a really nice day in the area. read more

OMG. What an amazing experience. Okay here's my story. I planned to propose to my lady, and thought of doing it on the Rip Van Winkle Flyer in the Vista Dome (that's the small domed booth set above the train that has only about 10 tables. the V.I.P 1st class equivalent for a 1948 train) I was a little bit worried, mainly because I couldn't find any pics of the Flyer's Vista Dome online (except a thumbnail size pic on their site, which detail can't be seen) I feared "what if it hasn't been kept well over the years and is shoddy and maybe smell of mold) Well that was NOT the case. They have kept this train looking like it was made just a couple years ago. But the best part of this experience was Conductor Dave (I forget his last name sorry) I tried for a while to get tickets via phone and email, and was getting no replies. I almost gave up, and then Conductor Dave called me on the Thursday before our vacation and told me he had available seats for that Sunday. Fast forward to Sunday: I wanted to talk to Conductor Dave as soon as he got there to tell him about my proposed proposal. As soon as he saw me, he greeted me " Paul !" How he knew who I was from a phone call 3 days earlier out of all the people there is a mystery. anyhow, This guy made our trip magical. I whispered to him that I was going to "pop the question" to my lady, so he said "I'll see what I can do". He first opened the gate to let her and I in, left all the passengers on the platform, escorted ONLY US to the vista dome on top of the train, where he had put a "reserved" sign on the table all the way in the back corner so we could have privacy,before boarding the rest of the train passengers. Then after I proposed and we both went to the bathroom he asked me privately if it was okay to tell the passengers. I said yes, so when we returned to the Vista Dome, all the passengers up there were applauding us. Aside from me being so happy because of my engagement, I REALLY want to express how cool this train ride really is. It's well preserved the meals we're actually pretty good (considering I was expecting cafeteria food) I had a stuffed pork loin, My fiance had a chicken Marsala. Both came with steamed veggies and sliced roasted potatoes. Anyhow, thumbs up, we will definitely go again. read more

I was looking forward to a scenic ride to see fall foliage ... this was not scenic at all and not worth the money I spent for us to do this .... there was a view of swamps/water and people's trailers ... very disappointed. The train car was not clean either and people made a mess with the food they brought on board. read more

For kids who want to ride a train with indoor and outdoor cars, very cool experience. Scenic views, essentially parallel to Route 30 up to Roxbury. As a history buff, I'd have liked some history narration (live/recorded/dial in/recorded devices...whatever delivery is easiest for clearly a low volume operation). Nice gift shop, some history at the Roxbury Terminal being restored. 'Old timer' USMC vet working there put pennies on the rails for the locomotive to crush on the spur changeover. Gave to the kids - very cool. Diesel locomotive smoke does infiltrate the open passenger cabs, which is noxious. Clears out quickly, but you are breathing it in, irritable to anyone with asthma or COPD. A steam locomotive would be great, but certain that will never happen there. Train staff helpful, but clearly 'a job'. A three minute walk from the new Vodka distillery, if you're into tasting and then recovering on the train ;) read more
