The kids got a lot of hands on interaction with these lovely horses; grooming, putting on a saddle, how to lead while off the horse, how to properly ride, giving the horses water, and special treats. One even got her mane braided! If you're looking for a homeschool field trip, give this place a GO! The horses were extremely well behaved, and the kids had a great time!

When my friend and I arrived on a Sunday morning, we were informed by a ranger that the parking lot was completely full, but that the enterprising little old lady next door was selling parking spots in her pasture for a whopping $10. Sucker that I am, I paid up. After a 2 hour drive, I was not about to miss out on a gorgeous autumn hike! We were not disappointed. Although this hike doesn't offer much in the way of vistas, it's a terrific way to spend a day in the woods. Reports online seem to vary, but my friend's GPS device recorded this hike (from the parking lot and back again) as a 14 mile trip. This hike was a blast! It's long, with a strenuous ascent and lots of rock-hopping creek crossings. Seeing the crowds on the way to Old Rag, we were nervous that this trail would be packed, but we only passed a few other hikers. Quite a lot of this hike runs alongside a river, so it's very pretty and peaceful. When we picked up a trail map at the station, the ranger suggested that we hike this loop clockwise. He was right on! This gave us a nice, challenging start, with a relaxing conclusion walking next to the river - perfect!

Was wisely warned to bring sneakers and rope. Amazing little, well-equipped cabin with outside privy very deep in the woods. Used main room for almost all activities since easier to keep only one room warm with fireplace vs. two with stove in kitchen. Area is very nice and cabin allows a base camp for hikes throughout the nearby trails and hills. Highly recommend this spot, even if you have to walk through the brisk river to get there. Warnings include bears and venomous snakes (possibly in cabin) but saw neither in December.

The topography varies, and the meadow near the parking lot is markedly distinct from the valley in which the actual creek lies. One suspension bridge crosses the creek and it was in quite good condition, but it could also be crossed on foot, or on hoof as this is a horse area. There were several miles of trails and I was worn out enough that I did only a fraction of them, but they were quite pleasant. Various signage suggested this parking lot was a spot for thieves despite the rural location; I suppose it is a highbrow crowd that would be parking here. It also suggests that anytime your shoe leaves a mark the trail is too wet to walk, which if taken literally is kind of ridiculous. Fortunately, if you lock your car and make your own decisions about mud, you can have a good experiences.

Unfortunately, it was extremely cold and windy and we didn't have bug spray, so we didn't get didn't get too adventurous. For these reasons, we tried the easiest trail--the Meadow Loop Trail. It was an easy loop around a grassy area, took maybe less than 10 minutes. There was a very detailed map at the entrance of the trails. This included all the available trails, the level of difficulty for each trail, basic etiquette, friendly reminders, etc. There was also a reminder that everyone needs to watch out for each other --hikers, bikers and horse riders. We didn't see any horses, but we did try to dodge the "presents" they left behind. We did see some bikers returning from the trail. There was a large parking lot, which most likely fills up when the weather is nicer. Cameras are watching the parking lot, but it's always best to lock cars and hide valuables :). There were bathrooms available, but not the type with running water....if you get what I mean! Would I return? Can't say for sure since it's pretty far.

Too many trees but you get the feel how Lee could just about see a good portion of both ends of the fields.. I decided that after a long, crappy day that I'd take a walk and I started down the path. From where I started down the path to my turnaround point (30 minutes) it was almost all down hill. You know what that means, right? By the time I made it back to my hotel this guy KNEW he needed to lose about 70 pounds before he tried this again! It was actually quite a beautiful walk, but it kicked my butt.
