Visited the cemetery last night for a concert. Who knew there would be such an event at a cemetery. Walking through the gates to follow the illuminated path to the Horatio N. May Chapel really set the mood for the evening. Walking the grounds at night was peaceful even saw a deer. Something we don't get in the hustle and bustle of the city. I'm looking forward to attending another event and learning more about this beautiful resting place. read more

This was a super cool event! It was my first time this year and it will be part of my annual race schedule from now on! The cemetery property is HUGE so the entire 5K is run on a path inside the cemetery grounds! It was completely pitch black, except for the path that was lit by little candles. Every half mile or so, they also had special colored lighting on one of the buildings on the property. It is really hard to describe such a race, but it was just peaceful and beautiful. It was the first time I had ever run in the dark like that; next time, I might bring some kind of headlamp. My only concern was tripping or twisting my ankle in a groove in the path. Thankfully, I had no such incidents, as the path seemed pretty even and smooth. The energy was great and the race had that neighborhood feel. People seemed really excited about it -a lot of families either running or walking together. A lot of people dressed up. Just a really fun and unique event. I can't wait for more of my friends to attend and experience it with me next year! read more

I often wondered if I would be allowed to come to the crypts and I was pleasantly surprised that I could just come on in. Once of course, I told them that I belonged to the findagrave.com family and doing geneology has its perks. I absolutely feel in love with the place (I know morbid right), but there's something about Marble and Clean lines that really gets to me. Its just such a serene place and I wandered into the East side of the building, where the lights are mostly off and you get the occasional light from some of the stained glass. Let me tell you, I was freaked out. But the calmness lets your mind wander and it just takes you to a place that is really uncomfortable, well that would be for the average Joe but being part of the findagrave family for as long as i could remember, it really didn't phase me to bad. If you pay attention closely you can actually hear the wind which of course makes it seem a bit odd or cryptic. But its really just a beautiful place. Definitely check out the Mausoleum, its worth the wait, but it is very long and you may not see the whole place, but go ahead and find the famous, they are there. read more

Late post. My father was buried here since February 2007. Every couple of months, there's a sign that there are employees who clean the grave areas and request families and friends to take items with them during this cleaning process. Every time I visit, the grasses were green and neatly trimmed. My father's gravestone appears polished as well. Clean and professional. They know their job and do it well to accommodate a recent passing, answer questions, and discuss options. A no pressure sale. The sales lady even offered us coffee or water. Even offered a tissue every now and then. My mother recently bought "travel insurance", which in an event she passes away out of the country, there's an agency that will cover the expenses and hassle of bringing her body back to Chicago. In 1975, this cemetary was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A lot of notable people have been buried here. A guided walking tour is offered and there's even an annual Halloween 5K race. Beside the cemetary is a wildlife, West Ridge Nature Preserve which the city of Chicago have acquired in 2015. A trail is around a pond to fish and see plants. Since this is winter time, this is not a spot to bask into the cold weather. read more

This is the most serene, peaceful, and downright gorgeous cemetery I have ever been in. If you didnt know better you would never think you were anywhere near a city once inside. I have even picked out the exact spot where I wish to be buried (morbid I know, but better that than being stuck up in the rafters of an ugly mausoleum like my father). I love wandering around the grounds on a warm summer day, reading the headstones and trying to imagine what that person's life was like. I especially love the glass-enclosed statue of Frances M. Pearce and her daughter. It is so beautiful and tragic. They do offer guided tours on Saturdays. read more

i was fortunate enough to be able to stop here when i was on a business trip, my family comes from here and as per request my mother asked me to take photos for our ancestor books of the family mausoleum. We made the trip around the beautiful grounds. It was snowing and freezing but it was just beautiful. the statues are just stunning and so beautiful in regards of my families mausoleum, im kinda sad to see it rusted shut. The last person to vist it was around 75 years ago my great grandma i got the keys to the door and it was useless. i also went to my other families mausoleum and they actually tore the door out and cemented the whole thing shut. im sad for that but i know it was for the best i will be back again read more

I am extremely disappointed at Rosehill Cemetery Services for taking 6mos to place my Mom's name plate even after paying the cost upfront as they instructed prior honoring our request. Upon ordering, their representative informed us that they will have the name plate on the mausoleum in a little over a month. After coming to the office on four different occassions to follow up with Alla, I was finally called some weeks after that they will have it ready and installed by end of Jan to Mid Feb. Basically, I had to wait from Sept 2018 to Feb 2019. This is my family's 8th mausoleum at Rosehill, so it is extremely disappointing that it is taking this long for a simple bronze plate to be attached. read more

History, sculpture, stained-glass and serenity in the midst of a bustling city are all offered in abundance here at Rosehill. Having visited twice, I'm already anxiously awaiting my next visit. I adored seeing all of the aforementioned notable gravestones, but my favorite part of the cemetery (maybe because it was winter) was the enormous, immaculate mausoleum. We got there about 45 minutes before closing, which was actually perfect. We had the entire place to ourselves, except for Ralph, the extremely affable caretaker. He was going around turning off lights while we were there, which meant many of the places we visited in the basement were dark and gloomy. Really, that only added to the slightly spooky, cool vibe of the place. The architecture of this building is amazing. The cold, white marble mixed with the stunning stained glass in the individual chapels is haunting and beautiful. The John G. Shedd chapel is a must-see, yet there are other equally compelling things to see here. I lost myself for a minute soaking in the pictures and mementos of peoples lives in their small, glassed-in wall monuments. If you go to Rosehill, DO NOT miss the mausoleum. read more

The good news AND bad news is I often get lost inside. :) 350 acres is a LOT of territory, and while there are better vistas in certain parts, it seems like every view is worthy. Rosehill cemetery and mausoleum continue to disappoint, so I'm hoping someone from management will read and act on this review. A lot of people visit their deceased loved-ones on holidays - like Thanksgiving. Did Rosehill open on time - NO - there were over 15 cars in line waiting at 9:20am outside the locked gates when it was supposed to open at 9:00. And of course no one at Rosehill answered their phone while we were waiting. Does Rosehill's voicemail greeting tell customers what time they open? - NO, only when they close. Does Rosehill's website have their hours for normal days and weekends? - NO. On Thanksgiving, did Rosehill have someone other than the receptionist, to drive out to the Mauseleum to unlock the doors? NO. I could go on about other issues over the years (not just this one recent day), but I'll stop here. I wish my parents weren't buried there. I sure won't be! read more

Rosehill Cemetery is one of most beautiful wooded areas in Chicago. My parents, Richard & Eleanor Harding, are buried there. I went to Rosehill's office to follow up on my mother's grave marking and the new Sales Manager Deidre Mitchell came out to greet me, which impressed me right away. We were told the headstone would be ready in "maybe January or February" but those months have come and gone in silence. No headstone, no updates, no respect to let the deceased rest in peace and bring the family closure. But why would they care? The money for the headstone has obviously been spent and forgotten about. I HATE cemeteries--normally I avoid cemeteries like the Plague--seriously they creep me out. Something about walking over peoples graves gives me the willies. There are 2 reasons I could not avoid going any longer--first off it is in my hood and also, I went to a funeral there last week (very sad). That being said, this place is absolutely stunning and it is HUMONGOUS. If you enjoy history & sculpture, you should consider checking this place out. Some graves there are over 200 years old and the sculptures are amazing. You can get completely wrapped up in reading all the headstone & spend an entire day there. There are lots of benches around the lagoon so you can spend time pondering your own life or just resting--heck you may need that after all the walking around. They also do tours of the place now on Saturdays--so if you are into that sort of thing, it would probably be right up your alley. read more

I have family buried in both Rose Hill cemetery my Mother and .Father are buried in Rose Hill gardens no monuments. My brother, sister, grandmother are buried across the street. However, when are the big developments that bought Rose Hill going to sink some money into fixing the concrete fence along Peterson it is a disgrace. My God how long are you going to let that fence stand in that condition. At one of your big board meetings better bring this up. This is a review of Rosehill as a cemetery and not as a historic location. Firstly, Rosehill is owned by a huge, national, publicly traded company. As is frequently the case with such ownership, communication processes are an issue. My experience: Knowing my mother was in hospice, I purchased a plot, etc., at Rosehill 7 weeks in advance of her death. When she died, I was then advised by Rosehill that I had to produce my father's death certificate. My father died 20 years ago, his funeral home out of state no longer had his death certificate on file. Having buried 6 people across 3 states (including IL), I was unprepared for this request, which has never been made of me before. After all, how many people are going to pay several thousand dollars to a cemetery on a whim? Fortunately, I was able to find my father's death certificate, but I wonder why I was not informed of this requirement at the outset of the process. I spoke to the General Manager who advised me he would address this. However, whomever considers Rosehill should consider my experiences. (Interestingly, when I read the "not recommended" reviews of Rosehill on Yelp today (8/20/15) there were a number from people who actually had used Rosehill cemetery services. They were not favorable. I'm not sure why these were "not recommended", but also worth considering if you are thinking of using Rosehill.) read more

This place is beautiful and serene, and I've become well acquainted with its vast expanses this past year since my father's sudden passing. This place will be my family's home for at least three generations. There is a quaint little pond and a chapel where services can be held. Many of the sites are well tended by families, so the place sees many visitors. In fact, my mother and I have become friendly with the visitors we repeatedly see on good weathered days. I like this place so much that I visualized how I'd integrate my visits over the years. I often joked that I'd make sure to stop by to pay my respects before weekly errands at Target across the street. Fireside Lounge, becoming one of my favorite neighborhood hangouts, is also right down the street. The almost tragic downside to this place is the questionable management and counselors who present too many challenges to list here. But all the problems and headaches are nonetheless offset by the historic richness and the beauty of the place. I couldn't bear to downgrade the rating but technically I should. read more

I can't explain the draw of Rosehill Cemetery but from the first time I was taken there to experience the place I was a bit freaked out by the size and the tall walls surrounding it. Each experience has been different. Each time I've been there I've looked over my shoulder to make sure there weren't crazed freaks walking around ready to kidnap me because I was alone taking pictures in a giant cemetery or ghosts in the shadows. (Bring a tripod, and a friend. It's less creepy and easier to navigate with a friend) The cemetery does have some factual history to it, as well as a supernatural side. There is a statue of a lady and her child in a glass box and the story goes that on the anniversary of her death I believe the box fills with mysterious smoke...there are several tales like that. One thing to be concerned about that doesn't have to do with the supernatural is getting lost. At the Dignity Memorial building as you enter they can provide you with a map as well as point out historical landmarks and grave sites. If you drive blindly into the cemetery it's likely you'll find yourself wondering where the hell you've gone and how the hell you get out. Keep an eye on the clock toward the end of the day if you're visiting in the afternoon, they close early like most cemeteries. Lastly, keep your eyes open for the large pond and all the creepy geese, the exquisite statues, the old graves. There are worn ones which are SO old they've fallen over cracked and broken, worn letters that are hard to make out. Some people may be freaked out by cemeteries, I once was, going into ones where I didn't have family buried. Being closed off by tall boundaries doesn't help either. But as you adjust try to find yourself experiencing the calm atmosphere. read more

Well, I'm hoping no one is in need of employing their services anytime soon... but rosehill is beautiful... even for those not looking for a permanent spot here anytime soon. I grew up across the street and am well acquainted with this cemetery. To this day, I think it's the most peaceful place in all of Chicago and you would be surprised how calming a walk or drive through can be. Careful not to get lost... 350 acres with twists and turns can get you turned around if you don't know where you are headed (yes... it is that large). The monuments in here are beautiful and have great history. Someone else already mentioned the monument of the mother and her child: supposedly the story behind it is that the child died of TB and the mother of a broken heart days later and according to the legend every year on the day of the child's death the glass casing around the statue lights up... complete legend... but even so, when we were kids, we would all go in at midnight and watch for it (lame... but when you live across the street, you find that you spend more nights there than you would think doing stupid stuff). There are quite a few well known people buried here as well, with some pretty exquisite grave sites. Anyway, the cemetery is really well kept and a lot of care is put into preserving the chapels and monuments. If you are at all interested in the history of Chicago's cemeteries, this is a great place to take a tour, self guided or professionally. read more

I made a visit on November 17th to the new section north side f Peterson, I found the cemetery to be unkept and poorly maintained as for the grave sights they are not uniform as they were required. There had been no response from cemetery Management . It also appears that the rules Changed and the grave sights In the Muslim section look very Bad. The FREE tour of Rosehill Cemetery at 10am on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month is fabulous! As others have mentioned, the cemetery grounds and architecture are beautiful. But getting to learn more about the history of Chicago, cemeteries in general, and the people buried at Rosehill takes your visit to a whole other level. This was an all around great experience! We recently got interested in cemetery exporation after buying Matt Huck's book on Chicago cemeteries and visiting his wonderful website, www.graveyards.com. This is probably the most important cemetery in Chicago. Graceland has more distinctive tomb architecture but this one is larger and probably has even more famous burials. Rather than trying to describe all, I suggest visitng the aformentioned web site and then going there. They also have started tours. In addition to the monuments and mausoleum, the entrance gate, besigned by the same architect as the water tower and pumping station and strongly rembling them in its castellated gothic style, is a Chicago landmark. Cemeteries are not morbid places -- they are fun! Go and see this one first, then explore some others. read more

I spent the good part of a day at Rosehill during a recent trip to Chicago. I have quite a few family members at Rosehill but I hadn't been there for quite a while - ten years or more! I had a lot of catching up to do and Jenny Schroeder was very helpful. She helped me with the plot look ups (before my arrival) and helped me to find the actual grave sites - not an easy task as some were NOT marked with head stones. Jenny went over & above to help me out before and during my trip to the cemetery. She was extremely helpful, and I really appreciated the time she took with me since I had limited time in Chicago. PS - while waiting for Jenny to finish up with other guests, I got some friendly help from a couple of other staff members in the office. read more

Maybe researching suicide the day before wasn't a good idea..... There seems to be a lot of suicides in Korea and Japan. I wonder why that is? Regardless of the the research, walking around the cemetery was extremely relaxing and comforting. Although, you do get an erie sense because you are traipsing around on top of dead bodies. If you don't let your mind go there, it should be a great experience. It's quite peaceful and beautiful at the cemetery. There are headstones from the civil war era (from 1819-2009). You can also see different types of headstones and mausoleums. Some are very pretty and elaborate and you just wonder to yourself how much they spent on each piece of stone and statue. I didn't have a chance to go on the guided tour but I will next time. I got lost and had only half an hour to spend with the dead... Note: It closes at 5 o'clock sharp. Updated 10 September 2007: Visiting here was a dream. This is Chicago's largest cemetery. The office staff are exceptional in person (compared to my awful phone interactions). I spent a long time here after photographing my gravestones just sitting on a bench watching my daughter play with a dripping faucet. The upkeep is fantastic and the whole experience of being here is very calming. Previous 2-star review: The guy I spoke with on the phone was a bit rude. He said that they didn't record age of death but then when he looked at the files he found that they did. They were able to tell me who was in the same plot. I will hopefully by visiting to photograph gravestones later this summer and will post an update. read more

This review is just for their customer service. It has nothing to do with their tours. I called to ask for my mother's exact burial location and his response was I'll tell you when you get here. Those were his exact words! Seriously, I just needed it to inform the people making the headstone for her grave so they know where it goes! They are more than happy to take thousands of dollars from the family and after that it's like screw them! Their so called care takers run over people's temporary markers, flowers, decorations, etc with their machines and vehicles with no freaking care in the world. Not to mention, they tear out all the little things we leave behind for our love ones and you leave the shrines and graves with crazy decorations behind. I completely understand the cemetery rules, but if you're going to remove the decorations from one then you do it to ALL! If I could do it all over again, I would go some where else where they actually care about their living and deseased customers! read more
