an extensive selection of books, records, comics, etc!. there's 2 floors and the owner was very knowledgeable about every shelf. the prices are very reasonable, i walked out with 3 books in great condition for $15. i was looking for cooking/baking books and i love that they have handwritten details in them since the books are used. it's a great addition for an amazing price. the decor in the shop is also very nice! the kids corner is really cute too! read more

Cozy, whimsical, and historical is how I would describe the Galveston Bookshop. Walking in felt like walking into a storybook waiting to be read. With the many quiet nooks, you're bound to find a quiet place to sit and read. It's a used bookstore with a broad selection of genres. They also sell records which would be perfect for collectors. I bought a new journal from their many gorgeous journal designs. My daughter stumbled upon some books she had her eye on for some time. The store is huge so I'm sure you'd find something worthwhile. I was looking for some philosophy books and the attendant led me right to them. I was happy to see that the prices were reasonable and within my budget. This helps when you're a bibliophile like me. This bookstore felt like it has its roots in Galveston. It's a well-known local used bookstore you'll be happy to visit. I was told o couldn't have a drink (with a lid) in the bookshop. If I'm in the Texas heat, and needing hydration, I'm likely not browsing somewhere I'm treated like a child. The girl was very unkind. There was a man with a small service dog she denied entry as well. My husband is a veteran, so k cannot imagine being told you cannot have your trained service animal in the bookshop. We won't be back and we love looking at books and would've been customers. read more

If you are in search of great customer care, DO NOT visit this place. I stayed in town after a cruise just to patronize this bookstore, and what a disappointment it was to walk in and not even be acknowledged. It does not cost a red cent to be kind. Go to the second floor at the Rosenberg library, which is about two minutes up the street, to purchase previously loved books. They are friendly and greet you with a great smile as soon as you walk in! read more

Great locally owned bookstore. The owner and staff are all very friendly and helpful. I was looking for a gift for my husband and found the coolest fishing book. Great value and huge selection - both used and new books. I've been many times and never have had any problems. This is a family friendly store! As a local to the area it is a great gem. I've enjoyed getting to know the people that work there and why those choose to work for a local, small business versus a big box store. This is a wonderful bookshop to get lost in. They have areas of Texas-specific and Galveston-specific books, but also tons of books of any genre, as well as comics and music. The staff is very friendly, and have always offered recommendations or comments about the books I've chosen to read. Their prices also beat larger used book retailers such as Half Price. Not a family welcoming place. We have loved this bookshop for years when we visit Galveston. Our children love reading and we always buy at least five books every trip. This time, the employee gave us a warning about our children for being children. Seriously, they were not being chaotic or tearing anything up. If they had, we would have taken them out of the shop. My infant cried and my toddler used an excited voice. We had a few books out that they were looking at, but we are respectful and are always sure to tidy up after we make our selections before we leave places. Kids are allowed to take up space, just like every other person, especially in a store that sells children's books. Disappointed! We won't be back. read more

If you have children, don't go to this bookshop. Better yet, don't go to this book shop at all. My educator wife was excited to pick up some books, especially for our almost 2 year old son who was with us. And yes, there is a kids section in the bookstore so you would think they are used to kids in the shop. My son is almost 2 and loves to be moving. And yes he was running down the aisles a little bit. Not ripping books off shelves, not screaming, not doing anything other than being a happy toddler. And based on his "running", my family was asked to leave the store because of his "playgrounding." The clerk was absolutely ridiculous and we were judged from the moment we entered the store. Absolute failure in customer service and we will take our money elsewhere. You should too. read more

An absolute trove of out of print SF/F as well as dozens of other genres (including a great local and Texas history and culture section and a really nice shelf of guides for birders). Local bookshops can be the lifeblood of the town. Where else can you escape, delve through some history (in a portable container), connect with the community, sit and chat with a cat, and check on "what's going on around town," other than at a local bookshop. Well, maybe a library, but they won't have cats and you won't technically be able to keep the books for as long as you choose. Galveston Bookshop is one such connection. It really is remarkable how quickly Galveston is recovering, and that's very apparent here. Mud, water, mold, and falling debris do not do bookshops any favors. Quite the opposite, really. This shop is back and bold. There's a really great section on their website devoted to their Ike recovery. Read it, look at the pictures. I stopped by here on a recent vacation, and couldn't get past the local book section. They have quite a selection of the Sloan books with old photos of Galveston, but they also had a great selection of books regarding Galveston's history, the sprawling metropolis, The Storm of 1900, Alicia, Ike, and even a book on brothels. (There were apparently a few in the area in the early 1900s = giant port town, lots of brothels.) I didn't really give myself enough time to absorb every corner and every shelf, but what I did see, I liked. It was a mix of new and old. Paperback and hard cover. To illustrate, there were several of the same book. One was the latest edition, the one next to it a soft cover ten years old, the one next to that was a hard cover twenty years old. All price levels and vintages accounted for. It was such a nice balance of option. I didn't get to comb the record selection, but will do so on my next visit to the island. read more

I could get lost for hours in this great little bookshop. Sadly, many of these places are going away. This was a most excellent find on a recent day trip to Galveston. It is conveniently located near free two hour parking yet it is close enough to the Strand that you can do some wonderful shopping and dining there as well. The woman who works the register is a delight. They do offer a public restroom which is rare in these parts. There are so many books packed into a small space yet you never get the sense of being claustrophobic. They have so much to choose from on so many subjects. I loved how large the selection was featuring local authors and subjects. You won't find that at a major book chain. While I did not make a purchase on this trip, I found their prices to be very reasonable. I will most definitely make this a stop on all future trips to the island. read more

This is a great bookshop. I've only been in a few times and I always find something I want. They've got a great variety and also a record and comic book section. I haven't looked into those sections much but just by glancing it looks like they have a decent collection. I traded books in for the first time today. I got $1 a piece for them. Fair enough I'd say. They sell most of their books at half of the price marked on the back unless otherwise marked on the cover with a minimum price of $2.50. read more

Great bookstore in Galveston, just off the Strand (and near Board Game Island). Big selection of used books, in particular sci-fi. Fair amount of kids' books, and even some vinyl LPs upstairs. We goofed around for some time on a Sunday, and they were tolerant of our very excited kids, which was nice. We got several books each at pretty reasonable prices. I'd love to have had more time to peruse without the kids. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Personally I go for mystery and I found a some great books in this category. However they have a big inventory of all topics of books. Wow - this is a great place. And I thought real bookstores are a thing of the past. Not true! Thankfully. This store has it all. A very nice lady greeted us and directed us to our areas of interest. The enticing odor of the stacks reminded me of an old library. There is a section for collectors & some very nice editions. The stacks wind throughout the first floor and there is also an upstairs area filled with more stacks and some old vinyl albums. We are glad to support such a local gem. We will definitely be back and recommended it to our friends who visit the area. read more
