There are 2 different ways to arrive at the lodge. We took the more desolate route. It is about 30…read more- 45 minutes from the town of Shelburne along this route in which we came across two bear cubs on the road. We arrived late in the evening around 9 PM. The lodge is in the middle of the forest so you have to travel down a dirt road to reach it. We were greeted promptly with a glass of wine. The lodge is decorated nicely. We sat outside by the fire pit. It was a little buggy and it would have been nice if the citronella candle torches were lit. We wanted to use the jacuzzi but it was not available because they had cleaned it and the water was not warm enough. We went to bed around 11:30 and to our surprise our room was filled with bugs. At first, we thought they would not bother us but they flew into our mouths and landed on our body while sleeping so I kept the light on in the bathroom. This helped the problem somewhat but it was difficult to sleep with the light. In addition, there were several cobwebs in the room with spiders. Spiders build nests where there are bugs so this seems to be an issue in this room. In addition, it was hot in the room so we kept the fan on but this caused another issue - the fan kept making constant noises; keeping us awake all night. Due to the bugs and the noisy fan, it was not a tranquil night and we slept very little. In the morning, I noticed that the screens on the windows had gaps between them and the window pane, and I believe this is why there were so many bugs in the room as evident in the picture. The management told me that they are aware of these gaps. It is due to the expansion and contraction of the wood. Okay, so why isn't there a solution since we are paying so much money to stay there? A simple solution is to seal the gaps with the following: Scotch 1.88 in. x 54.6 yds. Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape (3-Pack). Thus, I recommend visiting Home Depot and buy the tape if you plan to stay there so you will avoid a sleepless night. In addition, check the fan when visiting your room for the first time and request a new room if it makes noise. We never got to enjoy any of the amenities since we were so tired.

Lane's Privateer Inn is a hotel, but it also has an attached restaurant and my husband and I had…read moredinner there recently and it was great. I had the Lobster Roll ($25) which came with fries and a salad (I requested the dressing on the side). My husband had the Mersey Scallops ($24) and these came with roasted potatoes and vegetables. My lobster roll was delicious. It was real lobster mixed with tiny pieces of celery and mayo. It also had some mixed greens in it. In Ottawa, where I'm from, "Lobster Rolls" sometimes have cheap fillers like fake crab mixed in - which is sacrilege, I know, but it happens, so I was thrilled that that did not happen here. Mind you, I fully expect any self-respecting restaurant in the Maritimes to make good Lobster Rolls. Lane's Privateer Inn did not disappoint. I was also glad to see that the side salad was a real spring mix/mesclun mix salad and not iceberg or romaine lettuce. However, the salad was a little on the small side. It had 1 grape tomato cut in half and some grated carrots. It was only a few mouthfuls. The dressing on the side was a light citrus vinaigrette that I enjoyed. The fries were ok. They were a bit on the mealy side, but the outside was crispy at least. My husband enjoyed his meal. He got 6 large scallops, some new potatoes, carrots and broccoli. He gave me a scallop and it was very tasty. We got some complimentary biscuits to start our meal. They were slightly sweet. I thought they were just ok, but my husband really liked them. I gave him three-quarters of mine. I like that they give you a glass bottle of water and leave it at your table. I noticed that each table had a different shaped bottle which I thought was cool. My husband also got a flight of 4 beers for $8. Each beer was 4oz each. He got to chose the beers individually from a list of about 12 beers. All the beers were brewed in Nova Scotia. Service was very friendly and courteous. The ambiance is cool and feels like an old fashioned inn. There's free parking in their private parking lot.

It's a lovely old inn with 27 rooms, each furnished with antiques and each one different to the next. Ours had a claw foot tub that was perfect for pampering. Especially since there were all sorts of wonderful smelling soaps and lotions to go along. But the Inn had more surprises in store for us. The dining rooms - yes, more than one were again furnished from an older, simpler time and the food was delicious. A lobster club sandwich for me and some crispy coated scallops for him...okay, we shared everything and it was all excellent. Next surprise, was the bookstore. We actually ate our lunch in it. Wonderful selections of Canadiana - literature, history and for me...local cookbooks. Feasting for tummy and mind. Perfect! And last, but not least for the foodie in me...the gourmet gift shop with everything from serving pieces to ingredients. Each area - inn, restaurant, bookstore and gourmet gift shop is worth a trip back on its own.

Even though there is slim pickings for accommodations in Liverpool, The Best Western Liverpool doesn't act like it's the only game in town. It is a great hotel in its own right. The rooms are new and clean, like many Best Westerns. What sets this Best Western apart from the rest is the great customer service provided by all staff, not just front desk staff and the little thoughtful things like the breakfast buffet selection for people with dietary restrictions (more on that later), the variety of magazines available in the lobby, and the movies on DVD that you can borrow at the front desk. The breakfast buffet is by far the best I have seen in any hotel. Not because it's fancy or high end (which it's not), but because there is so much selection and it is so considerate of people with dietary restrictions. Gluten-free bread, waffles and muffins are kept in the back room to avoid contamination - you have to ask the breakfast room attendant for them. Gluten-free cereal is kept in its original manufacturer's container, next to the regular cereal dispensers. In addition to regular skim and 2% milk, they have dairy-free, soy-free almond milk. They have different types of yogurt - fat-free, full-fat, with real sugar and with sugar substitutes. They have so many different toppings for your oatmeal or yogurt as well - a dried fruits and nut medley, granola, shredded coconut, dried cranberries, crumbled Reece's pieces, and more that I forget. They have 2 waffle machines, lots of different pastries, bread, and English muffins. They even have processed cheese slices (in cheddar and Swiss) so you can make your own version of the English McMuffin, lol. They have whipped cream, strawberries, blueberries, and syrup for your waffles. They have hashbrowns, baked beans, scrambled eggs and a meat that rotates between sausage and ham. They also encourage recycling and composting with receptacles with clear signage as to what goes into what. The breakfast attendants are all so sweet and helpful, especially Angie and Pam. In our third day there something weird happened to our door and it wouldn't lock. One of the housekeeping staff saw us struggling with the door and said she would ask a maintenance person to come and take a look. He arrived within 10 minutes, took out his tool kit and fixed the door in 5 minutes. Both the housekeeping staff and maintenance staff were pleasant. There is lots of outdoor free parking. The Best Western Liverpool is awesome!
