But, when the long drive ends at Whispering Waves, there's too much to be excited about before going straight to sleep! The cottage I stayed in over the weekend back during my visit was huge: a huge bedroom, fold-out couches, real fireplaces, a veranda overlooking the water, a jacuzzi for two in the master bedroom and a full kitchen. Personally, I'd never stay in Shelburne (sorry...) for long enough to use all of those things, but man are they ever nice to have for a getaway where you don't want to have to rely on restaurants for every single meal. Still, for those who want a bit of a middle ground, with certain packages the owners of the cottages actually cook dinner for two and bring it down to your place so that you can enjoy it all romantically and junk if you're into that sort of thing. Clean, close to town (ish...or we got lost which I can't totally rule out), and friendly owners who cook? What's not to love!

Only stayed here one night, in retrospect I wish I had booked more…read more Paul and Charlotte are very welcoming hosts, our cabin was very comfortable with excellent sunset views. There are some really nice beaches nearby. The decor is nicely done rustic with a nautical theme and is kept in top notch condition. Be forewarned, this off the beaten path so there are NO local restaurants, the closest is 20 minutes away (Shelburne at 30 min. away has more, and a Sobeys market). Still, there's a nicely stocked kitchen once you're prepared for it, even has starter coffee/ tea if you forget. We had a very homey impromptu meal and shared a beautiful sunset on the porch. All in all a big thumbs up - will keep Whispering Waves in mind for any return trip.

We got there late and had to leave early for the ferry and our only regret is not getting there sooner to enjoy the property and the lake. Hostess was very kind to make us breakfast to go for the ferry and even compensated for our allergies . We will make this a regular stopping point in our future travels. David and Deb Tampa Florida

I've catered two weddings here and the facilities are excellent. The staff at Windhorse Farm take great care to ensure their clients are happy. Much of the focus of Windhorse Farm is sustainability and green thinking, taking care to carefully compost or use energy efficient materials. Many of the buildings constructed use reclaimed materials which provide a beautiful balance of rustic and new.

What a HUGE disappointment Windhorse Farms was! The receptionist was rude. After ignoring me for…read morefive minutes, he didn't even show me to my room, because he wanted to go to a staff party instead. My accommodation was disgustingly filthy. The bathtub was stained all shades of yellow, the bathroom mat reeked of mildew, and the pillows on the bed had some dead bugs on top of them. The staff of Windhorse Farms may think that they're saving the environment by reducing their use of cleaning supplies, but I think they're really just too cheap or too lazy to clean things properly. When I complained about the mess in my room, they did something unbelievably insulting -- they blamed me for it. They acted as if it was my fault, and thought that they were being generous by not charging me an extra fee. Furthermore, the atmosphere and the people are really fake. With its Japanese shrine, its Tibetan prayer flags, its cliche Chinese symbols, Windhorse Farms is just a confusion of Asian cultures. Why does a tree need an old, tattered prayer flag rung around it, anyway? Isn't it holy enough? Why don't the words "peace", "love" and "friendship" look just as good in English as they do in Chinese? I didn't see any Tibetan prayer wheels, but if I did, then the image of Windhorse Farms as an pseudo-spiritual amusement park with its "rides" and "must-sees" would have been complete. I checked out early, didn't get my money back -- worst weekend ever.

If you can climb two flights of stairs you can stay in one of two spacious suites on the second floor. Ours had a bedroom and a sitting room with a lovely view over the harbor. The young proprietors have made all sorts of improvements to the historic house including wonderful modern bathroom facilities. Due to an unforeseen change of plans we had to leave early to catch the Digby Ferry before the regular breakfast time but we sent off with fresh homemade muffins, egg sandwiches and coffee to enjoy on our way. A happy end to a lovely visit.
