Rosies Surf School is unlike any other of the surf schools you'll find on the North Shore. We had already been to a few other schools and, while it had always been fun, we knew that we would stick with Rosie after the first day surfing with her. Rosie is definitely a natural teacher; while she was always very patient and understanding, she knows how to push you just enough to make you progress and improve. I'm not gonna lie - Rosie will be on your ass and make sure you have the right posture and stance and obey surf etiquette on every ride. Some days it was tough but it is oh so worth it! Her way of knowing the waves and adjusting your stance allowed us to catch our own waves and make turns after only a week! Of course you can go with another school. Of course you can just rent a board and try catching your own waves like a helpless idiot and be over surfing after a couple of hours. From my experience, though, it's worth investing in a good surfing instructor like Rosie. Apart from earning you some extra understanding from the locals who can tell you're a beginner - more importantly - she knows the waves and can tell you which ones to paddle for so you don't completely spend yourself trying to go for waves you won't be able to catch as a beginner. For those of you out there who are thinking of taking up surfing, go with Rosie. She is the most patient and competent surf instructor I have gotten to know on Hawaii. Her easy-going nature and flexibility when it comes to scheduling your lesson are a major plus and if you are willing to put up with a couple of scrapes and wipe-outs and will listen to her corrections, you will be standing on those waves in no time. read more

I have been surfing for the past five years and love surfing so much! But I've been struggling increasingly to catch waves and have grown frustrated. Rosie coached me through all this, had very clear and explicit advice on how to overcome and unlearn bad habits and great tips on new techniques! Most importantly, she helped me to catch waves and have fun! I plan to do this for the rest of my life and I am so grateful that I got to spend a few days surfing with Rosie, absorbing her mindset and taking in as much of her advice as I can. On my first trip to Oahu I found Rosie from a recommendation by her friend and other locals I was chatting with at Haleiwa Joe's (great food). I much prefer to seek out local advice for something like this and have a private lesson than to register with a big outfit and have a less personal experience. I first had a session with Rosie in 2013. Being a very novice surfer I was as one can imagine a touch nervous. Watching other surfers tackle waves with ease can do that. We went through a quick but informative shore lesson then we got right to it. Paddling out I had no idea what to expect. Rosie was super knowledgeable and reassuring but with every arm stroke out to the waves I was still pessimistic as to my own ability. We got out to the breaks and let me tell you, I followed Rosie's instruction and she had me up on the first wave. Her and I surfed until I literally couldn't surf any more. Surfing is a hell of a work out for sure. I had so much fun that I booked in with Rosie on my second trip to Hawaii and took my two younger sisters with me as a Christmas present. They loved it as well. Rosie's partner in crime snaps photo's with a great lens on the shore and offers them at a very reasonable rate post lesson. Tips - go for a two hour session, it's the perfect amount of time - obviously get the photo's they're awesome I really just can't say enough great things about Rosie's Surf School. It feels great to pay a local professional directly rather than a big company, her prices are very reasonable and the experience she delivers is just outstanding. Ive taken three surf lessons from Rosie with my friends. Rosie has been consistently great and very helpful, whether it's your first time surfing or you've been a couple times. She suggests new things to try, whether it's walking forward and back on a surf board or going slightly sideways. Our daughters first had a lesson November 2013 with Rosie. My husband and I talked prior to the lesson and had agreed that if the girls got up one time during the lesson and caught a clean ride, just once, that would be a good lesson. Well..Rosie had both of my girls (8 & 10) up on their first waves! They proceeded to surf for the next 1.5 hours and had the best time. This year November 2014 the whole family surfed. Mom, Dad and two girls. Rosie is thoughtful, kind, and encouraging. A professional instructor, conscience of every ones safety and fun at all times from beginning to end. We followed Rosie's directions and with help from her crew (Keoki) were all up on our first waves! Our younger daughter got knocked in the head with her surf board while trying to get out to the break. She became a little gun shy to make it out to the big water, but that didn't stop us. Rosie had our daughter surfing on the smaller break for the remainder of the lesson. We really can't say enough great things about Rosie's Surf School. It was a highlight of our vacation and we had wished had thought to do more lessons with Rosie while we were in Oahu. Her prices are very reasonable and the experience she delivers is great. My wife and I did a lesson together with Rosie and it was awesome. Neither of us had ever tried surfing before and within an hour we were both standing up on the boards. My wife can't swim and Rosie was even able to make her feel comfortable on the water and really went out of her way to make sure my wife was OK any time she fell off the board. Rosie really cared about us having fun and doing the best we could. She's very knowledgeable, a great teacher and was a ton of fun to hang out with on the water for the afternoon. After a randomly asked question about good surf instructors while visiting waimea valley falls we were pointed in Rosie's direction. This couldn't have worked out better if we tried. Rosie is an awesome instructor and she was super friendly and helpful. We met the next day after a quick text conversation, bright and early the next morning she was early and ready for us. She had brand new equipment for us and we were at the beach in seconds. She brought us through the basics in a very clear and easily understood manner and had us hyped to go grab our waves. My first wave I was standing and Miki caught her first wave shortly after me and rode it all the way in to shore. For the next two hours she got us standing on several waves and we had an awesome time the only thing stopping us was our flagging arm strength. We both finished our set with a great ride in and we even saw a big two foot turtle hanging out with us by the beach. A more knowledgeable and friendlier instructor you will be hard pressed to find.
