It was our first time visiting the island, and he immediately made us feel welcome. When we mentioned we were new to the area, he walked us over to the map and took the time to explain the different spots around the North Shore and where we should go. Christian was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so many helpful tips and pointers. You could tell he truly knew what he was talking about, and he explained everything in a way that made us feel confident and excited to explore. He really went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience and left the shop feeling prepared. The most impressive part is that we later found out he had just started working there and is only 17 years old. The level of professionalism, knowledge, and genuine kindness he showed at such a young age is remarkable. The owners of North Shore Surf Shop are very lucky to have him on their team, and we wanted to make sure his effort didn't go unnoticed. The shop itself has everything you need for a fun day exploring the island. We rented snorkel gear for $20 each for the day, which was such a great deal. We also added life vests for $10 each, which gave us extra peace of mind while we were out in the water. They also have lockers available for $10, which was super convenient for storing our belongings while we were out snorkeling. The entire rental and return process was very smooth and seamless. We're so glad we stopped in and even happier that we met Christian. He truly made the experience memorable. Mahalo!

Surf N Sea...YES PLEASE! My husband and I were looking to…read morerent a kayak on the North Shore, and Surf N Sea popped up in my search. Not only are the prices reasonable, but the service is great too. They made sure we had everything we needed for our kayaking adventure. We didn't need instruction as we're experienced, but it was nice to know that it was offered if needed. They also rent SUP's. The actual Surf N Sea store has SO MUCH stuff...clothes, swimwear, flip flops, and more. They even sell water and sodas. Plus, they have a bathroom. Not sure if it's for everyone, but they offered it to us she once we were going to kayak. The service in here is great too! If in the area, stop in Surf N Sea, you'll find everything you need and more!

Surf N Sea is a classic Haleiwa staple that specializes in all things ocean activities! You can…read morerent gear for surfing, stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling, freediving, scuba, and even kayaking. They even offer lessons and tours. If you're looking to do any water activities and don't have the gear, this is a great spot on the North Shore. I mostly come here to shop, they have all the best surf / beach brands. Which is great since most surf brands have closed down their physical locations. They have racks on racks of awesome swimsuits and clothes. I love looking through all of their surf competition shirts. I think the last time we bought a surf comp shirt we even got the matching poster for free! I also bought my short fins here and was able to find a really cute pair. The service here was super nice and helpful when looking for a pair of fins. Now I'm in the market for longer freediving fins and this is the spot I'm gonna check out the next time I'm in Haleiwa.

My last surf lesson- over a year ago- was unfortunately stressful and resulted only in killer full-body workout, 100% falling in the water. I've been wanting to try surfing in a warmer climate and different instruction to rekindle my excitement and hopefully catch some waves!! Very happy with my experience with Hans & my instructor, Jimmy. What I appreciated about Hans: 1. Scheduling: was able to book the day before. If hoping for semi-private or group, plan in advance. 2. Facilities: clean, attractive, decent merch, easy parking across the street by Honolulu Zoo. After the session, there was clear protocol for discarding / sanitizing used rash guard + shoes. 3. Introduction: quick but thorough PowerPoint presentation with examples of what to do / not do while in the water, followed by on-land demos. What I appreciated about my instructor: Jimmy was easy going, confident, and catered to my experience and stamina (I am relatively very healthy but don't workout or swim regularly). His vibe made it easy to relax and apply simple techniques to the time in the water. Jimmy shared stories from his person experience and prior students that were insightful and relatable. Jimmy is a natural encourager and demonstrates a genuine confidence in his students in their ability to surf. Jimmy also demonstrated an intimate familiarity with the beach and water. He was able to pinpoint the distance out into the water that would yield the best result for the appropriate amount of effort based on my goals. My surf goals for this session were pretty mild-- #1: get out there #2: have a good time, feel comfortable and ENJOY #3: catch 1 or 2 waves (even kneeling would have been great). With Jimmy, I easily surpassed my goals-- got out there had a GREAT time caught several waves (standing) and finished about half to the very end of the wave, coming back down on the board for smooth completion. I would definitely recommend Jimmy for instruction at Hans Hedemann Surf School. I only wish Hawaii wasn't so far from home or I'd already book my next session!
