Daily, year round, the jewelry and craft makers from the pueblos surrounding Santa Fe set up displays to sell their wares outside the Palace, facing the Plaza. While the local artists who have achieved some renown have their items displayed in the shops around Santa Fe, the local Native American families, often with the help of mom, dad, and kids, spread out blankets in their assigned stalls. It's really something to see! Especially as the vendors move their wares on the blankets using long sticks with hooks on the end! :-) And, there is something for everyone... jewelry, turquoise, silver, beadwork, small crafts. It's just fun to browse and talk to the vendors. They truly are wonderful people, and we enjoy supporting them! And, much of the jewelry is beautiful, some better than what you'll find in the shops. We were greeted by his warm and friendly smile. He invited us in and shared the history of his family's weaving business. This is eight generations of Family Weavers in his family. The looms are all set up and we even witnessed a demonstration of using the loom to weave. So interesting! They sell all size blankets, rugs, vests, table runners, purses, pillows and other Native American pottery. Lots of colors to choose from. I found the jewelry and ended up purchasing a gorgeous necklace made by Mark Jimenez. This necklace is part of the Divine Spirit series. I also purchased a blanket and table runners. They can also accommodate special orders by request. I am so glad we took the time to stop and learn about the history of these family weavers. New Mexico is so full of talented artisans.
