Named Campus Martius for "Field of Mars" it is the reference point for Detroit's "mile" roads. Look for the Zero Mile Marker on the ground - Seven Mile and Eight Mile are precisely seven and eight miles from this spot, respectively. It was originally a militia drill ground back in the 1800s and the First Michigan Infantry Regiment departed from Campus Martius in 1861 for the Civil War. The park opened in 2004 and includes the beautiful Woodward Fountain, a seasonal ice rink and a seasonal beach. The - Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is also here. Loved how tucked away the location felt, despite being super conveniently located with a large free parking lot on site at Orleans and Wilkins. There was a full bar, giant/oversize yard games, and nice outdoor seating. Little Asian Bites brought the food, DJ, and other fun vendors like Pong Detroit and Scrap Soils for composting (perfect for a food event!). We were right on the Dequindre Cut bike/foot path and had plenty of walkers and bikers passing by. Just felt like a really ideal summer evening!

It has a child's play area, a baseball diamond, shaded seating, and is parked up against wooded areas with trails. The spot seems to be a little off from the beaten path because although you may be sharing the area, you will not feel pushed out by other groups.

I think you do need to bring your pieces though. You will also find a lending library, which is decorated with cardinals there too. I did not see a parking lot, but there is some free street parking available. The park is well maintained and has benches placed along the park and a memorial flag honoring veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Persian Gulf War. The park hosts a farmer's market on Wednesday's from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. when in season. Even though this park is very small and does not have any restrooms, or trails, I like it. It is very clean and well maintained. It also offers a good place to relax and reflect or play some classic games outdoors.

Cardinal Park is a beautiful, small park located at an intersection. It is a relief to see the…read morepark there and the gazebo along with it. The area it is in benefits from it as it a welcome draught of beauty and well designed space in an urban environment. The gazebo is very nice and appreciated as a place to sit during inclement weather and to enjoy in the summertime. The benches scattered through the park invite rest no matter which direction you are traversing the park. There is no play area here and it is on a busy intersection so this is not a play park. The Melvindale Veterans Memorial is also located here. During the summertime and into the fall Melvindale hosts their Farmers' Market here. It is in a good location as it is between a commercial area with stores and restaurants and a very set of neighborhoods. The park is also graced with a lending library where people can take a book and leave a book. The lending library box is tastefully decorated with cardinals and trailing vines.
