a bowl of lobster, corn and potatoes

Valentine's Day yelp review. There were no fireworks or flowers. Normally I hit the cemetery before the big day but I was pressed for time and had a long drive to see the busy counselor. Don't judge those people don't need flowers anymore. I reduce reuse and recycle. (I'm pandering shamelessly to the millennials and all their over judgy nonsense!) I digress. I was also out of fireworks and no stand along the Highway. I love a non traditional celebration. If u can find someone who can get into the moment and get all off season with u all the better. Facebook foreplay before the big day was on point. No memes or themes were off limit no matter how sacred the holiday. If that's not the fat, winged cherub shooting a dart I don't know what is. My partner in crime (we are still negotiating terms of endearment and I'm anticipating extra points for this one! PS if anyone has any "appropriate terms" for this stage of the "relationship" please feel free to leave them in the comments below. She often underestimates the powers of "my people".) She secured 2 bottles of prime Beaujolais nouveau 2021. They went down like a fat kid on a see saw. It is a mutual favorite (the wine to be clear. I was forbidden from mentioning other seasonally appropriate mutual favorites on pain of death) and we both sat and sipped as we watched the sun go down. One could suppose the passing of a step mom and grueling several weeks and covid recovery and work and stress over meeting her people and indecision on a fixed plan for the big day and kids in town and all underfoot and the cold and general fall lingering malaise would completely derail this occasion. Nothing could be further from the truth (another possible epitaph for the author. I'm on fire for 3 am). Good times and tears were had by all. It created a bittersweet parting/starting moment that was very pleasant on the palate. It was a brief "date" but we savored each moment. Lots has happened over the last several weeks. We are navigating the rapids together, me at the helm looking the part and her on the oars. I know I have a yelp "following" and I didn't want to disappoint on the big day. Working on bringing it every day because you never know when you'll be yelp reviewed. Peace out

Rouses had a great selection of regional food. A great place to stock up on Louisiana essentials when flying into town.

    Seafood!

DISCLAIMER: This review is based strictly on their boiled seafood. Mardi Gras was today so, like many others living in or near NOLA, the holiday is not complete without some form of seafood. Metairie reminds me why it is NOT like New Orleans once again (which is fine): most of the "hot" boiled seafood joints were closed. But, I distinctly remembered someone getting seafood from Rouse's, so here we are... I purchased crawfish, blue crabs, corn, potatoes, and mushrooms. Everything but the crawfish was separately packaged and sitting under a heating lamp. I'm weary of heating lamps but I have a deep appreciation for warm seafood and sides. The crawfish were placed in an ice chest and customers dip however many they want. Anddddd just my luck, the batch was hot (freshly poured)! The crawfish: 7/10. They would have been perfect had they had an actual flavor and not just spiciness. That was disappointing because they were spicy (which I love), large, and meaty but the flavor lacked. :( The crabs: unfortunately, I did not try these but they were decent in size. They did not sound hollow either, but don't quote me or sue me. The corn: delicious! 10/10. Sweet and spicy. You know how sometimes the corn is meant to be sweet but it just tastes spicy? Nope. Not my experience. I think corn on the cob is supposed to have some depth of sweetness, so those were my cup of tea. The potatoes: 5/10. Meh. I cannot seem to find a Metairie place that sells potatoes with A) good texture AND B) the seasoning marinates inside of the potato. What is life? Why aren't places investing in, arguably, one of the most satisfying foods in a seafood boil?! They had a nice texture and the seasoning seeped through the exterior JUST A TAD. I think everyone should slice their potatoes in half from now on to assure proper seasoning. The mushrooms: 9/10. They were great! I like mine a bit more spicy, but everything else about them was perfect. Good bite, nice seasoned taste. Overall, I think Rouse's does a good job with boiled seafood considering the fact that they are not a seafood establishment, per se. I have had worse seafood experiences at actual seafood spots, soooo...

Unattended food cart with open trays of uncovered food.

Wooweeee! This store was an adventure. I've been to Rouse's stores before, but not this particular location. We only went because we saw an ad for a no carb ice cream (rebel) being sold at a Rouse's. Note: isn't sold at this store. Anyway, the outside of the store is very dated. Old brick and mortar. You would expect to see shoppers wearing bell bottoms. The inside is open and inviting. Prices seem on par as what you would pay at another grocery store. I think my 1 star rating will have to do with how food stocks are handled...or NOT handled. We have been shopping now for about 10 mins and I noticed at the self serve hot bar, a food cart had sat unattended with uncovered food in it. I say that's unsanitary and unsafe. In the ice cream isle, I was looking for the Rebel Icecream. I saw on a top shelf a large lump of ice and it looked like a Mini snowman. Turned out to be a pint of freezer burned Icecream. From the amount of freezer burn on it, it may have been in there during the Reagan Administration. Checking out. Not enough cashiers for the Mother's Day crowd that was shopping. Our cashier was a young teen. No smile, no hi and a simple thank you when we were done. I'll come back if the Winn Dixie near me goes out of business or if I'm forced by the government.

This Rouses is conveniently located by my house so I shop here a lot. Prices are comparable to other local supermarkets, but I think the quality of fresh produce, meats and seafood are a little better. They will often have local produce available which is always nice. You can also get fresh boiled crawfish at this location on Fridays. Huge wine selection with every type of wine you can imagine. Expensive wines are kept along wall in temperature controlled glass cooler. Glass enclosure by wine has a good selection of hard liquor to choose from. Beer cooler has adequate selection of all types of beers to choose from. Store is usually always clean and easy to navigate. They did rearrange the store about a year ago so it's taken me a while to still get use to it and find everything I'm looking for. Can get busy early evening and weekends and when it does, there is never enough lanes open for checking out. Will sometimes have to wait in line for 10-15 minutes on busy days. Light days usually in and out. Bathrooms located on first floor across from seating area. They are semi clean typically, but could always be cleaner. I only use in extreme emergencies. Ample parking, but lazy people will cram the front sections waiting to get vip parking instead of just parking further out and walking. There are 2 Redbox located here so I usually will grab a movie on my way out.

This morning I go to rouse to do shopping. I had a basket with stuff in it so I put down on the counter to get check out and the cashier Patricia started yelling at me to take my stuff out of the basket. I think is so rude. That her job. I had my granny baby and I needed to have a basket. Never again. She worth no stars and no customer service skills at all. Yall need to train on customer service skills alot of cashier don't have it yall store.

Ahh well what can I say. I really don't like this Rouses. I only go because it's close to home. I got some sliced cheese at the deli and the gal does not show me the cut before she slices my order. I didn't even know she started slicing, and them she comes over and hands me my order. Ok so then I need some bread. I always get the same bread so I know it's an item they have regularly. I didn't see it and tried to ask the man who was stocking bread. I swear you would think they have only one kind because he did not have a clue, OR he just didn't want to help, either way. They recently remodeled this location and it looks nice on the inside, but the workers pretty much need to go back to good manners class & Customer service needs an upgrade.

When first moving to the area I loved this store. Store is clean and typically the employees are helpful. However this location of Rouses chooses to sell expired meat in their meat department. Specifically breakfast sausage. I have brought this to managements attention and have been told it's frozen so it should be fine. The attitude of the manager at this store is very condescending. The attached pictures were taken on July 22, 2018. Watch what you buy here.

Since I have been going there a long time I have seen the meat department change under a man who just retired after over forty (40) years to a really good place to shop for meat. The presentation was really nice and he treated you with respect and always had a smile and a Hello for me. Well, it's just been a few days and already It's looks like a mess. I asked to have a large roast cut in half and was told by Steve working in the meat department that I would have to come back when the cutter was there (???). He might but be a morning person but, really needs to do better. He didn't seem like he wanted to help AT ALL!! FYI, Be careful when buying the reduced meat. I didn't mind purchasing some in the past because the previous guy would reduce the prices low enough that you didn't mind if it had to be thrown out because it was actually bad when opened. Now, in my opinion, the discounted prices are simply most of the other stores regular prices. I may as well buy elsewhere and not be treated rudely when asking questions or requesting help. I will get fresher meat at better prices by shopping elsewhere. Oh Well, A good butcher does really make a difference. I hope he enjoys his well deserved retirement. He will be missed. In my opinion, the new person (Steve) needs to do much better in the meat department or more customers will opt to buy meat at lower priced family owned local stores for a better, fresher, tastier more affordable shopping experience.

I mainly go just to buy fruit but I took pictures of other things they had. It's more like a healthier grocery boutique by a German based company. I will say that I have noticed at different stores, the prices are drastically different per demographic areas. For example, I went to the store on Vets in Metairie and a family pack of chicken legs (drumsticks) was only $5 and some change. I went to the store in Algiers and they didn't offer the family pack of the same item, only 1/4 pack and the price was close to $6. I went to the Gretna store and their prices matched Vets prices. Very odd. In all the stores, I've been to, there's always one cashier and no self checkout stations except in Marrero. Overall, it's a pretty good place to shop for certain items but you're certainly not going to find your beloved Cajun foods or spices here.
