Boys that regularly play tackle football and wrestle in my family room. I've never regretted an art purchase. But, I have regretted walking away from some over the years. And in some cases have gone to great lengths to procure a piece I spotted while on vacation. The reason is that I typically like to step back and think about it for awhile before making a purchase. My bright line for making an art purchase is whether it tortures me a little bit by its absence. The Volta Glass Gallery is across the street from the Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio and is where the artists based there sell their work. After making my own glass art, it gave me an even greater appreciation for the artists working in this medium. When I walked into Volta, I was greeted by Kelly Howard and gravitated toward the most recent addition to her collection. A stunning piece and we had a lovely conversation about her work in the gallery. Everything from light fixtures to glass floats and a lot in between. I thought about it for a day and returned to make my purchase. Even though it was no longer Black Friday, they gave me the special discount we discussed on my initial visit. Great customer service all around. I'm thrilled to have acquired two new pieces for my collection on this trip to the coast. My amateur effort and the work of a master in the field.

Lincoln City Glass Center's website is easy to maneuver and schedule an appointment. The "hot shop" is immaculate and the employees are attentive and professional. Once your item is selected, and the colors and glass pattern are determined, your teacher will take you on the floor to begin. The teacher was patient and so amiable. 30-minutes later you will have a completed hand-blown art piece. Glass needs to cool down in an annealer overnight for pick-up the following morning. I was concerned about my item breaking in my suitcase when flying home, and I was told they could ship it to me. They are so accommodating! Glass blowing at Lincoln City Glass Center was the highlight of my vacation! If I return to the area, I will definitely blow glass again!

My first wife and kids may still have artifacts from here but I know mine are long gone (sadly). I used to plan bicycle layovers in Depoe Bay so I could eat and watch the glass-blowers. I was reminded of Oregon today (frequent occurrence since I grew up in Lake Oswego) but surprised myself by remembering this place name during a conversation that started over Tillamook ice cream. Anyhow, if they've survived this long then they have to be at least as good as I remember - and my memories of them are glorious.

Tuck away in the corner of Depot Bay is a wonderful place called Magic in the Glass. Very small business and usually relies on word of mouth. The artist here is very friendly. With many years of experience under his belt, there is no question he can't answer. I've seen many glass artists up and down the Oregon Coast, but he has a style that is all his own. The colors, the care he uses all the way to his process is phenomenal. Just watching him spin glass is very hypnotic. His glass art is very reasonable priced. Most of the art work you see him create can be bought the very next day. (takes a day for glass to cool down) He will also tell you his inspiration for that piece. It's a nice little break from mundane called life. So come stop by and enjoy wonderful glass art at its best.
