Wow just wow stay away from this dump, this once beautiful course has hit below rock bottom. The owners should be ashamed to take people's hard earned money for this nightmare. The bunkers had zero sand, overgrown weeds, entire fairways missing sod- it was just dirt and where there was grass it was burnt straw. The cart paths were just broken messes. They had the audacity to tell us it was cart path only. I have never in 40 years of playing golf have I seen a course in worst shape..... heartbreaking!! read more

The east side course...This review is designed to help those who plan to play this course based on past experiences to manage their expectations. First, i'd like to begin with the fact that I appreciate the hard work and effort that is being done at the moment to improve the course. The front nine is under considerable repair. The bunkers have been forgotten and either need to be filled in or removed altogether. The tee boxes could have been in better shape, and I would have liked some of the predefined cart paths to be in better condition. A special round of recognition goes to the workers on hole 9 who failed to hear or respond to our warning signs on our approach shots to that area. With all that said, I'd like to add that the course design is fantastic and the staff was very courteous and accommodating. The proposal...my apologies if I missed the message about the course being under repair..but if I didn't I would suggest posting to give golfers notice..I will certainly play this course again, when the repairs are complete and because the client facing staff got it right... read more

Can't recommend the course. Lots of bunkers but all just filled with dirt. Either hard as concrete or muddy or filled with puddles (even though it hasn't rained in a week plus). Fairways and greens were OK. No ball washers at all. Not in the T-boxes. Nowhere. Not close to being a $100 per round course. The somerset county courses are better. read more

Super Freezing no tent for wedding cocktail hour food was good but cold pasta the dinner was iced cold, uncooked! Drinks weren't mixed at all way to much alcohol and no mixing! dessert were super pasty , staff didnt fill water on table at all never check how our food was! Took 45 minutes for coffee definitely awful DJ wasn't impressed at all it was freezing outside and inside! Would never recommend or go back there waste of money and time! read more

Roycebrook Golf Club gave my husband and I a wedding we will never forget. In the preparation stage this team was so accommodating and always ready to help. On the actual day everything was arranged perfectly and seamlessly moved through the evening. New found friend plays at this course, invited me to play a round didn't have too many expectations because the weather was COLD.... Very cold... 1st time for many things... So after a long drive to get to the course I thought I had enough golf gear on to keep me warm -- NOT... Into the clubhouse I go, nice selection, bought a few things (beanie, and golf gloves)... Shocked at the price (sale/Yes) staff was accommodating and friendly (stay tuned on this note though)... Now that I was fairly warm I was ready to visit the range... Okay but the amount of balls that come with the round is silly. 12-15 range balls... Up this please.... We were told a freeze delay so expect to go out 45 min past your original t time... Time flies, not even 10 minutes into the range a guy yells my friend's name to hit the first T... Wow... Our foursome heads to the 1st T, and the starter, not friendly at all (here it goes....wait for it!). He immediately makes a snarky remark about no carts on the fairways... Huh? There were so many golfers before us driving on every fairway we thought it was a joke until he yelled at one of the golfers to pay attention... Never witnessed unprofessionalism like this but it was squared away... Driving on the fairway is accepted he must've not gotten the memo. Now onto the course, played the tips on this day which I normally don't play and it was cold so the ball didn't travel as well. The course was in great shape from T to Green... Greens undulated and in good shape.... Advice is keep it in the fairways because out of place at this course and the small greens to work with makes it difficult to score. Ball flight is important on this course, the par 3's are further and deceptive so pay careful attention to your yardage and expect ball flight upon any approach to be a factor. One disappointing note... There was a dead deer between fairway and par 3 that bothered me. Hunting to some people is a sport...not a good look to leave the poor animal in such a weird place... I'm hopeful they've taken care of this.. I didn't get a chance to try the food, just too cold on that day... Overall good course, not fond of the drive but good experience with new buddies that are really good. Lost the match play which was a bummer but enjoyed visiting the course.. read more

Every year I get together with a bunch of my friends from Piscataway for our Annual Post-Thanksgiving golf outing. We're like the Postal Service-"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night" keep us from our annual outing. We've played in 26 degrees and snow, in the rain, and luckily we also have days like yesterday-50+ degrees and sunny. So this year we chose Royce Brook Golf Club for our annual event (third time we've had it here) and we had a great time. This course has a beautiful layout set in a links style - though this late in the season the tall, thick grass (gorse) has all been cut. We started the day at the driving range and putting green to get the kinks out of our bodies, hit the bar for a Bloody Mary to get the kinks out of our brains, and stopped at the outside grill for a quick hot dog to keep the stomach from rumbling on the course. This course is tough if you have trouble keeping the ball in the fairway as there are a lot of traps, well placed trees, and you have to deal with the thick grass-it can be very unforgiving. You also have to play the proper angles if you do keep it in the fairway-very few holes are dead straight, most have slight bends bend or are dog-legs so trying to cut a corner may leave you without a shot at the green...believe me, I was playing catch up all day and had a tough time of it. At $85, it's more than I like to pay for golf these days as my clubs don't seem to make it out of the garage enough during the year to warrant the expense, but a day like this with old friends is worth twice as much. Yesterday was a little tough though, as they had a frost delay that pushed our tee times back...we literally played our last hole in the dark. Usually, after our round we stick around for drinks and dinner, but I had made plans with the family. Royce Brooks's bar and dining areas are very nice and the food is very good...a little pricey, but good. All in all, Royce Brook is a great course-you'll have a great time here! read more

My wife and I played today. Nice practice area, but the course was in poor condition from tee to greens. Tee boxes were burnt out as well as the fairways. Sand bunkers had little sand and were muddy. The greens looked like September with pot marks all over. Many many un repaired ball marks and way to much play for this time of year. The rough was very long and next to impossible to get a decent shot from there. Not worth the time to play and won't go back. read more

It was in terrible shape. They got a ton of rain a couple days prior, but 90% of the bunkers were filled with water! They didn't tell us that ahead of time. They charged $99 and didn't even warn us that we were gonna lose every ball that went into a bunker, and they have a lot of bunkers! I understand the severity of the rain, but they should have had a discounted rate and also warned us. For $99, how are they not pumping water out of the bunkers. I was recently here for a wedding. Pretty place. That's about all. The wedding was in a gazebo down the hill in the grass that had no runner or hard walk way. Heels were ruined. Happy hour was outside freezing with no heat lamps. Tent wedding. No heat lamps . It was 55 *. It was COLD at night. Port a potty's outside. No lights. No ramp for handicap. Food so so. Happy hour they came around with hors d'oeuvres, not a cocktail napkin in sight. Whoever is the wedding planner needs a lesson in basic wedding ideas. Wouldn't recommend this venue . For the price and fact it was a buffet with so so food they could have done a better job. read more

Royce Brook Golf Club is a links styled golf course located in Central New Jersey about an hour from New York City. It has two courses, East and West. You must be a member to play the West so we played the East. From the green tees, it measures 6447 yards. I like this course a lot. There are a lot holes that are pleasing to my eye. It seems like every hole is a dogleg that requires a good degree of planning before you ever put a tee in the ground. There is a lot of sand on this course too. I don't play well in sand and I did myself right today by avoiding it with exception of the 9th hole. This is the number one handicap on the course and bunkers surround the green like they are paparazzi snapping a picture of Paris Hilton leaving a night club. At the turn, the clubhouse has an outside grill with 4 kinds of hot dogs at the ready, burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. Every golf course should offer this kind of service between the 9 and ten. My favorite hole is the par 5, 12th. At 479 yards, this hole doglegs left around three fairway bunkers. I hit a monster drive over those bunkers and watched as my ball kicked left down the fairway. My second shot was 165 in and I landed it on the right side of the green. With two putts, you guessed it, I recorded my first birdie of the season. I carded a 95 at days end that gave me my first sub 100 round of the season. (I shot a 94 last year playing from the white tees, 5935 yards) read more

When theirs good weather on the horizon, take a day off and hit the links here. I had a Monday off and a free pass to check this place out and it was perfect. The course is beautiful and peaceful, with some good challenges on each hole. I was alone and able to mess around a bit with hitting two balls after tee off, which was appreciated since I was practicing for a future golf outing, and Royce Brook had just the right amount of sand traps that gave me a mental challenge to focus on, plus had plenty of distance markers which is sometimes hard to find. Played the West course and really enjoyed the atmosphere and probably could not have gone on a more beautiful Jersey morning. Stopped in for a quick burger and drink at the clubhouse after the first nine and the staff was very friendly, chatting with me as I was the only on in there at that time. My office is going to be hosting a golf outing there in August and I for one can't wait to return! read more

Played the public East course for first time after hearing good things about the course. It's a links/parkland style course. Nice architectural layout and scenic. Long from the blue and green tees. Heavily bunkered. Nice real grass practice range. Tee times always seem to be available if booking last minute. Staff was friendly. My problem is with the condition of the course: 1) bunkers are a mess - not maintained, drainage issues, ragged edges, rocks. 2) greens are in poor shape - too soft, full of old ball marks/divots. 3) need to channel and rope off "keep out areas" along fairways and around greens - too many folks are driving their carts all over the place which leads to further the poor conditions. Overall moderately disappointed - it's a shame they can't maintain it better b'cus this could be one of the top courses in the state. Not on the same level as Neshanic Valley or Heron Glen. read more

When your boss says that Monday will be spent on the golf course... there is only one response, YES! One of our suppliers took us out for a round last Monday. It was a super nice day and I have the sunburns to prove it. Upon arrival my bag was taken from me and shuttled to a cart while I checked in to the pro shop. The pro shop was nice and the employees were knowledgeable. We grabbed a bite to eat, which was very good BTW. Since our food was being cooked to order the cashier told us he would drive it to us if we wanted to hit some range balls or go ahead and tee off. NICE! So after we hit a couple range balls we made our way to the tee box and hit our shots. I felt like royalty when the cashier drove up on a cart to hand deliver our meals later on that hole. The cart girl was very attentive and had a large selection of cold beverages for us to choose from. At the end of the round we sat down in the restaurant and had some cold beer and a warm meal. My BACON wrap was worth the trip alone. All in all...I will be back (given the opportunity). And yes, I love my job! read more

This course photographs really well & looks good on the surface but once you get out there it is not what it seems. It's a good layout, but the greens have HUNDREDS of pitch marks and are incredibly beat up. I remember the bunkers always being shot... no sand at all. Last time I played the tee boxes were burnt to a crisp. It's really overpriced for what it is. I've played a few rounds via GolfNow for about $50 but otherwise it's $90+ on the weekend, which is far too much for a course of this caliber. You're better off going to the nearby Somerset County courses or to Mattawang for better values read more

I am a member of the west course and I have to say I drive 45 minutes to play this club it is a true test of golf I am around scratch anywhere else I play including places like baltusrol, Plainfield, ridge, etc and they all feel easy after playing at Royce brook west it measures over 7k yards from the tips and there is deep fescue that hugs the fairways with many many deep bunkers protecting both the fairways and the greens. I have broke 70 here but my normal round is in the hit 70's low 80's last time I played baltusrol I shot 71 and it was a bad day of putting! My only complaint is I pay the full member rate to play at 7:50am and they don't have any cart girls on the course until after 9am! So in essence you pay much more to get less service! For example today it was super humid and I would have paid $100 for a Gatorade and had to wait until the 12 th hole before we saw our first cart girl. Although I did get a Gatorade at the turn! Net to management make the cart girls show up by 7:30am this is golf and the hours are early!!! The membership should not be penalized like this! Also last week there where no curtains in the shower but they seemed to have fixed that this week! The staff is wonderful the head pro Joe Fabonio is awesome and accommodating, and generally they listen to the membership, they have one of the better teaching pros in Warren Ratz although he is best suited for the better player since he can be very cerebral when giving a lesson so you really need to understand the golf swing before you spend time with warren! Frank Petry also does an excellent job running tournaments! This club has some of the best run members tournaments I have ever experienced, and I have been a member of five different clubs either through work or personally. Although the drive for me is killer and getting up earlier on the weekends than I do for work during the week I plan on being a member here for years to come! I just need to remember to bring my own bottle of Gatorade since nothing is open when we tee off before 8am! read more

This resort is very run down, the only reason it is still in business is that there are not yet too many competitors. The golf course is in terrible shape. The carts have no front or side covers, not even covers for the golf bags to protect against the weather. We played when they had just aerated the greens, and they literally left the scraps on the greens so that we could not even putt on 7 of the holes. Truly one of the worst courses we have ever played. Other than during high season, their resort is almost empty. The only people who go there are "members", but good luck to them in finding new business. read more

Awesome golf course in central New Jersey located 15 minutes from Princeton. I will start off by saying that I am not a golfer and am definitely not familiar with many golf courses. I was volunteering at the golf club for a charity event supporting the Water for People. Being at the course for only 6 hours, I was able to meet the staff, taste the buffet lunch and get accustomed with the layout of the club and course. Overall, I had a positive experience. Every employee that I met was extremely friendly and helpful. One of the beverage cart employees was back from college working part-time here. I think she worked here in the past and had many good things to say. Looking back, I wish I worked at a golf club like this during my younger days. From what I could tell, the club and course were very well maintained. I got to speak with several golfers during the day and they all said this was a great course. In terms of hosting an event here, I think it was great. The Water for People group held a scramble with about 160 golfers where much of the money raised went to less fortunate countries with pour water systems. They had a lunch and dinner at the event. I only stayed for the lunch buffet which consisted of burgers and hot dogs along with some pasta and potato salad sides. I plan to go back for the event if it is done here again next year. Hats off to the Royce Brook Golf Club and their event services. read more

There is just one reason and one reason only that I gave this place 2 stars instead of one... The West Course, which is members ONLY (So don't believe the lie of a review you will see here that had a 5 star review that stated he golfed the West Course... must be an employee or a relative). The quick story I was allowed to West course is because I called to ask for a tee time for the East Course and was told they had an event for the East. I was offered to golf the West Course instead and fortunately I got the guys name because there was much drama when I got there! As stated, I was offered the West Course even though I am not a member and also made them aware I had a prepaid gift certificate I was given for my birthday that was purchased from Costco. When I arrived, I was first asked if I had a change of clothes (I didn't) because I was supposed to have on a collared shirt. I am fine with a dress code as I have golfed other places that expected this but you would think they would make you aware of this when you call. So I just said I would buy a shirt from their Golf Shop... The cheapest shirt was $70 and for one I know for a FACT costs $30 elsewhere!!! I know this because I OWN ONE!!! But whatever, I bought it anyway! Then the guy leaves, comes back (After I already paid for the shirt!!!) and says, "I have good news and bad news", the good news is I can still get you on the course, the bad news is we can't accept the gift certificate for it." At first I thought, maybe that means they aren't going to charge me at all??? But OF COURSE NOT!!! "That's going to be $70... something... I immediately told him I have no intentions of paying for the course since I only came there because I was told the certificate would be honored and if I couldn't use it for the West Course, I shouldn't have been invited to come and use it for the West Course when I called! Just to make an even longer story shorter, I eventually got my tee time and off to the Starter I go... I was treated like a Red Headed Step Child by the Starter and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why... Until a SUV pulled up with two golfers who opened their rear hatch and had the Starter retrieve their golf bags from the back... I of course did what I always do, carried my bag from the parking lot and put it up on the rack. I guess he took that as I was too cheap to drive up and tip him to do this for me. Had I know this service was available, I would have dropped them off first too, I am not a cheapskate and although I am not lazy, I sure don't like lugging my bag! So after that bout of rude behavior, I got to the course and they have nice fairways but unnecessarily large quantity of bunkers! They should rename this course BUNKER HILL! The greens are so fast I thought I was putting on glass! By the way, the fairways are the reason for the extra star! To wrap this long review up, I was given two certificates for my birthday as they came in a two certificate package... I tried to book a tee time for the East (Public) Course a week later and a friend wanted to join me so I called and tried to set a tee time for two and told them again I had the certificate. I was given an option of tee times but then was told it was going to be $80 for the extra golfer. I explained that all i need was the price for the green fee since the cart came included on the certificate. I was told that the price is $80 per golfer and that included the cart regardless if I already had the cart with the certificate. I cancelled and told them I would not be back... EVER! This place isn't worth $80 per golfer and is nothing more then a rip off! The staff are rude and the golfers are snooty! read more

Best public course in central New Jersey, and in the top 10 for the state. This course has a great layout. ( every hole offers something unique) I want to be clear I am talking about the east course ( west is private) course is always in great condition. Greens and fairways are always top notch! Greens are the best greens I play in New Jersey. Great roll . The people in pro shop and in restaurant are very nice. They have a nice grill with great food as you make the turn yo go to 10th hole. Course is open off tee shots. But then you encounter plenty of sand on the way yo the green. What I love most about this course ( and many agree) is that you can score!! The only drawback is the sand is just average, and after a good rain some bunkers can't be played. In last two years they have made improvements in many bunkers. But have a way to go. Yet, if your looking for a great course where you will leave with a smile then this is your course. read more
