Came to Ruben's after being told by another tailor that I needed to bring in some material in order to work on the sleeves of my blazers... She had never even touched the coats... But Ruben asked me to put it on, then started to feel the seems, asking me to bend and move so he could see how the coat moved... a true tailor. He cut open the sleeve right in front of me and talked to me about my options. Turns out I didn't even need more material -- there was enough in the sleeve. Ruben's work was fast (a day and a half for two coats) and quite simply perfect. I've been to quite a few tailors, and Ruben's work is quite good, not to mention he's an extremely amiable person. My husband needed a suit altered for a holiday party we had later that night. We called at least 10 places all who either did not answer the phone or could not make the alterations in a few hours. We called this place and they were able to hem his pants and lengthen the sleeves on his suit in 2.5 hours! We were so relieved and happy with the quick service. Today was my first time visiting Ruben's Tailor Shop. I need a pair of pants hemmed. He took the time to measure me, go over exactly how I wanted the hem, and then asked if I was in a hurry, to which I replied, "No." He asked me to give him a few minutes, and he hemmed my pants while I waited. He then told me to try them on again to make sure it was exactly what I wanted (it was). The service couldn't have been better, quicker or more fairly priced. This was the absolute WORST experience. Not only did he ruin my wedding reception dress, which will now cost me $150 to try and fix, he was vicious. I have never been in a situation like this on my life. Ruben had my dress for over a week. It was to be picked up at 11:30am on the day he told me it would be ready. I had a dental appointment across the street that ended up finishing at 10:30,am so I figured I would pop in and see if he possibly finished my dress early. He was actually working on it when I walked in. He said it would be ready in an hour, and I was able to come back 2 hours later. When I arrived he was helping two other gentlemen. He was quite rude to one of them, who was just asking a question. He handed me my dress to try on and continued helping the customers in his shop. I put my dress on and could see it was really a mess. The front of the dress, which he made a slight sweetheart, (it was previously strait) was way off center, a good 1.5-2". The top of the dress was pulling in multiple directions. My grandmother was in town to help me with wedding planning and she came and looked at the dress with me. The seams on the side were all curvy, should of been strait, the lining was only connected on one side of the dress...it was really bad. You could tell he must have slapped it together... That very morning perhaps. Well I waited for the two gentlemen to be done. The first thing I showed him was the stain on the front of my dress (looks like coffee or grease) he growled that it was there when he got it. I knew right then this was not going to go well. He stormed away and started sewing. I told him the front if the dress was off center, he came over to me and just drew a line between my breasts with chalk, no measuring or anything, and walked back to his machine and started sewing again. I looked at my grandmother and told her I was just going to take the dress off. I took it off and gave it to her to look over while I changed. We looked at the inside of the dress and it was a disaster, crooked seams, he cut the lining too short, just a mess. I was trying not to get upset. This was a one of a kind 1950 silk wedding dress. My grandmother said to him, while he was sewing, that she could show him what was wrong, and why it was off center. Boy did that make him ANGRY. He yelled at her "You are going to show ME what is wrong, you think YOU are going to show ME what is wrong!" She tried to explain what was wrong, and that we wanted to know if it could be fixed. He yelled at her that she should have just sewn it herself. He kept raising his voice, he wouldn't listen to either of us try to explain how we could possibly solve the problems. Well a customer came in, and he started helping her. While he was helping her I asked him how much I owed him for the hem, since it was the only thing right with the dress. He told me $95. (It is just a straight across bottom, no multiple layers or anything). I said there is no way I am paying that because he ruined my wedding reception dress. He came over, snatched my dress from me and hung it in the back of his shop. My grandmother and I didn't know what to do. He was still talking to the other customer. I picked up all of my belongings, pulled out some cash, threw it on his table, grabbed my dress and we ran to the car. It was awful. He is a terrifying, horrible man, with zero customer service skills. PLEASE spare yourself the time, money, and ruined clothes. read more

I went into this place once as it's right around the corner from my house. I needed a long, stretchy skirt hemmed. Ruben looked at the skirt and told me it'd be $35. My thought: "For a simple hem, really?!" I voiced to him that I've gotten other skirts/pants hemmed at a place 10 minutes from there for $15. I couldn't believe that he didn't even try to work with me on the price before he told me to "go there then." So, I went to Alteration Center on Lincoln & Tustin in Orange, CA. Of course, they only charged me $15 and did a wonderful job. In addition, they always get me my finished product within 1-2 hours. They saved me $20 for the same quality of work in half the time as Ruben's claims to do. Will never go back to Ruben's again. read more

I was in town on vacation and needed something fixed but when I went to pay for it I didn't realize he didn't take credit cards and before I left to go to the atm, he said I could pay him another way and he started to walk towards me and I immediately told him how disgusted I was by him thinking that I would be interested in anything sexual with him and definitely not even giving him a B$#W job. By far the worst. He may have been good in his youth, but now he's an ass even when he's wrong. He was 2 weeks late and losing measurements. Never getting new ones, so he winged it over and over again. Till finally he butchered the dress so much, losing its form. He was only to do the sides and he started tailoring the back and front. He was only supposed to expand the side underneath the armpits, but on his first attempt, he expanded one side correctly and on the other side, did it right at the armpit. After this I said, "Should you take my measurements again?" He said "No it's easy I can fix it." 3 days go by. He said these same words after 5 attempts, then finally the dress was ruined. He still made me pay $20 after the fact that I no longer have a dress. I paid $45 for the dress plus $20 to see a senile man go to town on the dress. His coworker kept telling him he was irresponsible and not doing his job correctly. The wedding is in 3 days. This was yesterday and now I'm having a hard time getting a dress. Mind you I went almost a month before to make sure the work he did would work so I wouldn't look for another dress. read more

Ruben - have I mentioned lately that you are my hero?! I had a beautiful new gown that needed a fairly significant alteration for a gala I was attending and I'm new to the area, so I chose randomly (yes - I should have Yelped first!) a bridal alterations shop near my house in the plaza near Village Theater. I had a TERRIBLE experience with them! No one spoke English (I'm all for cultural diversity, but if you're running a business here, it's helpful to at least speak your industry jargon) so I couldn't communicate my needs, never had me try the dress on, took it in but gave no receipt (I wrote my own), someone who did speak English was supposed to call me and never did, and then when I got fed up and tried to retrieve the gown, the shop was always closed! They had it for 11 days and never touched it!! A mere 2 days before the benefit I FINALLY found the original shop open and was able to collect my dress. They seemed surprised that I was annoyed and wanted it back unaltered! I called Ruben's shop and shared my dilemma (namely the possibility of having to attend a red carpet event in my underwear if he couldn't make the adjustment overnight!) and he invited me to bring the gown in to have a look. He was friendly and seemed confident that he could do the job and have it done on time, so I left it there with high hopes and low expectations. I was so worried that I actually went out and bought another dress just in case! I didn't like it as much but it was better than having none... I stopped by the next day, and right on schedule Ruben handed me the dress. Not only did it fit perfectly, but you couldn't even tell it had been customized!! By far the WORST customer service ever! The owner Ruben was extremely RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL! He said my wedding dress would be ready in a week, came back and he hasn't even touched it! He said oh come back next week and it will be ready. I went over everything with him twice and he still didn't deliver on what I asked. I had to go buy the lace for my dress, come back so he could attach it! He refused to reimburse me! He was ridiculously rude, doesn't keep his word about his timing, never bothered to call me to let me know anything about my dress. If I hadn't called and showed up my dress would probably still be sitting there! DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE, SO RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL AND WAY OVER PRICED!!! When we made the agreement on price he said it would include everything I wanted, and no he still didn't reimburse me for what I had to go out of my way to get! I will be reporting him to the BBB. if i could give this man zero stars i would he needs to close up shop!!! this is the worst tailor ever the first time i went to him i told him what was wrong about 2 months later i came back my things still werent done instead of making my pants smaller he made them bigger and everything else wasnt even started on. another 2 montbs went by i figured my stuff would be ready by then oh it was ready but it was still wrong then he had the nerve to charge me $85 for basic repairs and the worst part he trashed my leather coin purse i had him fix and fixed everything backwards. then he has a violent streak in him and his mother he asked me how much i was going to pay him and i said nothing because its still wrong and u ruined a good piece of leather he then snatched the close out of my hand and said well u don't get anything and his mother with her no talking ass decided to say some words as well!!! luckily the close i had him fix werent worth the arguing so i just left them there and managed to walk out with my fucked up cow hide coin purse never again!!! make sure when you drive down main street i repeat do not give him business hes not worth it and to be frank i dont know how hes still in business he does sloppy jobs doesnt get work done and feels you should pay his lightbill for it!!!! #imout read more
