But the more I walked by the more drawn I became to the reasonably priced designer merchandise and that were on the outdoor sales rack and window display. And upon first entry they won me over with the incredible deals and knowledgeable sales staff. The owner is a sharp dressed old head who will be quick to tell you how he's been in the clothing business for 50+ years as he walks you through the product that best suits your style. And when it comes down to it if he can't make you look good then no one can. he knows the product he buys in seam and out, and knows when to recommend things like scotch guarding for a jacket. his family runs the business with him and he has some pretty skilled staff as well. While some of the clothing did match the dated exterior, the store does yield a diverse amount of fashion at some pretty insane deals. designer pants went for as low as $50 for a pair of 2, and top of the lines sweaters went for as low as $30 for 2. When I picked up a brand new winter coat the owner was even cool enough to throw in a matching scarf free of charge. Add in plenty of suits, shirts, shoes, and then some; and you have a perfect destination for good fashion on a budget.

Most shops will telly you they carry dyeable shoes and they have like 10 pairs. Absurd. On a whim we decided to check out this little place less than a mile from home. Best choice I could have made. They have an entire room of evening and dyeable shoes. They easily had 200 pairs of dyeable shoes ranging from 40-200 dollars (most seemed to be about 60). Everything from super conservative looking shoes to very fun, modern shoes to shoes, short heels to sky high heels, simple to all dazzled up. The staff was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I'm pretty sure it was three generations of a family working there. Always a nice feeling to support a local mom and pop business. I'm from the neighborhood so I popped in the store, saw them and fell in love. It's an adorable shoe, that I thought I'd surely wear down the aisle on my wedding day. However, that weekend while shopping I found a different pair of shoes that match near exact to my dress and had to make a decision. Naturally I decided to return the shoes to South Philly Shoes since the others were such a better match. I looked at the receipt for a return policy before going in. Stamped across the front is "NO CASH REFUNDS". I bought with a charge - no problem! So I went to return the shoe today, 1/16/2013, just 5 days after purchasing. I hadn't even taken them out of the box. Immediately the two women in the store (who where both there when I purchased the shoes) told me there are no cash refunds. I said that was okay, I bought them with a credit card and would gladly take the refund on the charge. Now, I too am a small business owner and know the risks and costs of running a small business. But treating my customers and clients with little to no respect, no flexibility and no understanding is certainly not the way I do business. Needless to say, I support small businesses as much as I can. I shop Passyunk Ave to do my part and contribute and thus, shopped South Philly Shoes in the first place to ensure that if I'm going to spend money anyway, why not support the local/small businesses. The owners/managers/whoever the snide ladies behind the counter are launched into a full on rant about how expensive it is to run the credit card machine, how each time money goes into the register, it goes right out to pay bills, that the recession has hit them very hard and they don't have the money to refund me or anyone and that is the way it has been for 32 years. They insisted that a stamp on the receipt that says "NO CASH REFUNDS" is the same as NO REFUNDS, which it is plainly not. It is, to me, very specifically NO CASH REFUNDS as it clearly is stamped. Unfortunately, these are the risks and costs of running a small business and it is really hard to believe that in 32 years not one person has received a refund from this place as they suggest. It's sad to say that this is why people shop big box and department stores. I won't let this situation leave a bad taste for all small businesses of course, but definitely for this one. I stood there a few minutes to plead my case - it's not the same, it's a charge refund not cash, it's less than a week that I've had them in my possession, I don't need them, nor do i need a store credit because I now have shoes etc. etc. and to no avail. She avoided eye contact, told me that if I wanted to stand there and fight her I could but it wouldn't make a difference, quickly wrote out my store credit, handed it to me and said if I didn't want it, to give it to my mother or someone. I have purchased shoes there last year for my sister-in-law's wedding, 3 of 5 proms and other events and I will not be returning to this store. Each time I find that I could kick myself for going back, the staff is rude and snobby despite the shop being completely run-down and a complete and utter mess. Their bridal selection is vast but has grown cheesy over the years, everything else in the store is as another poster said "tacky". I am disputing the charge with my bank to at least have some support. Ridiculous that a business can conduct itself like this no wonder they are in such poor shape as they say. Go elsewhere, there are tons of great local small businesses and boutiques around the city, this is not one of them.

She confidently promised that it would look just like the pictures I provided, addressing all my concerns with certainty. However, at the final fitting, she abruptly admitted that the dress I wanted was not possible to make. This came as a complete shock, as there had been no prior warnings or disclaimers. Until that moment, I was only met with reassurance that everything was on track, yet she failed to deliver on her promise. Let me be clear: design choices were discussed upfront. I asked all the right questions, and she reassured me over and over that the dress would be exactly what I wanted. I also want to add that I never asked for any discounts or tried to bargain throughout this process. My only concern was that Oleksandra could make the dress I wanted. There were no misunderstandings, no miscommunications--just broken promises. Oleksandra's behavior was wildly unprofessional and emotionally abusive. She constantly shifted between being overly polite and aggressive, gaslighting me throughout the process. When I raised concerns about the dress not matching what I had ordered, she would praise her work and claim everything was perfect. The moment I pressed further, she began yelling, blaming me for every issue--from my choice of shoes to my weight, despite us discussing these details from the start. She even went as far as calling me an ungrateful liar, refusing to take any responsibility for her mistakes. Her erratic behavior left me feeling cornered and manipulated. Oleksandra consistently rescheduled fittings at the very last minute, never once offering an apology. This pattern of delay felt intentional, as if she was purposely stalling to leave me with no time or alternative just before the wedding. It's hard not to feel that this tactic was used to corner me, forcing me to accept a dress I didn't want when I had no other options left. Oleksandra's Fashion Studio didn't just fail to deliver the dress I ordered--she delivered something that was poorly made and treated me with disrespect along the way. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this place. Your wedding dress should be a source of joy, not frustration and heartbreak. When it came to the issue of the money, Oleksandra refused to take responsibility for the dress she never delivered. Despite my polite requests for a refund, she became increasingly aggressive, giving me excuse after excuse. In one particularly wild phone call, she claimed she couldn't return the money because she had already spent it on "business expenses" and simply didn't have it anymore. She had no intention of making things right until I mentioned the possibility of filing a dispute with my bank. It was only after hearing the word "dispute" that she reluctantly agreed to a partial refund, further highlighting her lack of professionalism and accountability. From the first meeting, when there were less than six months until the wedding, almost four months passed before the final fitting, where everything escalated. With just over two months until my wedding, I was left without a dress. Now, seven months later, the issue is still ongoing with a dispute over the remaining refund. If you're a bride who values your time, your money, and your peace of mind--don't take the risk. You deserve so much better than what Oleksandra can offer.

I took a pattern to Oleksandra and presented an idea of what I wanted. She immediately sized me up and drew a similar version which was more to my liking. After measurements (which were spot on) she made this beautifully lined jacket for me. I had extra fabric left over so Oleksandra made an A-line skirt. Whenever I wear them ( jeans and jacket; skirt and blouse, or any combination, I get such compliments. I wish I could say I'll ever be as good a seamstress, but not in this lifetime! By this time, Ariel had stepped out and another female employee stepped in. I remarked to her that it was so beautiful and I'd like to try it on, to which she sneered, very obviously looked me up and down, and said, "well, it only really fits a size 2...". Not that it makes any difference what size I am, but I'm between a 4 and 6 and was appalled at her rudeness. I asked the waist measurement (it was definitely larger than a 2) and she didn't know. When I said I'd like to give it a try, she scoffed and said, "well, it's $250, so don't force it". Excuse me?! How dare she say something like that! I'm not a child who is unaware of the delicacy of vintage clothing, and am not disillusioned about my size- I did try it on and it all fit except for the bust, because the waist was very high up on the dress and I have a long torso. The girl asked if it fit, and I told her the bodice was too short, and she replied that the original owner was very short and petite. That's what she should've told me about the size-I'm tall, around 5'9", and it would be very obvious it wouldn't fit if it was tailored for a short woman. Instead she made it about weight with her tone and comments. She then tried to get me to try on the original clothing line, saying it goes well with an "hourglass" shape, but I was so furious and embarrassed that I left. No one should be commenting on anyone's size, no matter how veiled, and to assume I would damage the garment? Uncalled for, unacceptable, and just plain mean. It was not said out of concern for the dress- it was malicious and very ill intended. I also felt like she was insinuating I couldn't afford it, anyway. I'll not return to be treated to poorly, and that's a shame, because this shop has potential.

I bought a dress here after admiring the simple lines and unfussy design of a dress in the window. I didn't have time to try it on, and when it didn't look just right (too shiny for daytime wear) I brought it back and Ariel exchanged it for a more work-appropriate dress, no problem. Everyone who works here is super sweet and goes out of their way to help you in a non-intrusive manner. Joyously recommended to fans of vintage and super-simple, locally made clothes.
