I placed an order with Totem Brand Co. for two Patagonia MLC 45L bags and paid increased international shipping and prepaid duties at checkout. A few days later, I received a cancellation notice falsely stating that I had requested to cancel the order -- which I had not. I had to reach out myself to find out what happened, and only then was I informed that the company had decided to cancel my order due to the cost of international shipping -- despite the fact that I had already paid the higher shipping and duties. No one attempted to contact me beforehand or offer any alternative; they simply cancelled the order without discussion. To make things worse, the sale price of the bag is no longer listed, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the cancellation. This was a very disappointing experience, marked by poor communication, no accountability, and a complete lack of customer consideration. Cute place on south street full of name brand as well as local items. You can get some exposure to the locally made, or locally supported brands as well as our neighbor Canada. E.g. They have Canada goose here! They also carry belts that have been made by the Amish. Come and check out the quality yourself. The front desk is friendly and will provide you with info if you have questions. They have a sister store Totem just 3 doors down that sells items made in America and ones from Japan. Lots of collaboration, artistic and unique. You'll find something here or at least a good gift for love ones. Really, really bad. Sent back a wrong sized bracelet, they promised a quick exchange. When they received my return, they gave a total lie about each size having a separate listing so they couldn't exchange, only refund, and wanted me to order again. As an international customer, I lost the duties and taxes they charged me. AND to order again I would have to pay those duties and taxes again, as well as their very high shipping cost! The lie was simply so they would not have to pay a few bucks to ship a replacement back to me. Now, they go silent. Outstanding customer service, guys. Never again. Avoid. read more

Would give them negative stars if I could. Terrible experience with shopping online. First they list the item as available and let me buy it. Then they email saying they don't have it and offer me another color or a different size. No discount or waived shipping fee or any sort of decent step to apologize for their error. Then when I select the other size they say they'll ship it out immediately and suddenly cancel the order. Place is run by liars and I will never support them or recommend them after this initial experience. Phil is a god damned lifesaver. After finding out my baggage was lost - with my suitable clothes in it - the night before a funeral early the next morning, i came in to Totem ten minutes before closing. Not only was Phil ready and willing to pull multiple sizes for me to try, he showed me to where stuff was discounted and gave me a hefty discount on a pair of boots out of the goodness of his heart. he stayed open for an extra twenty minutes helping me out and chatting and didn't make me feel like i was intruding even though i totally was. What made this even better is that hist store sells is clothing i'd want to wear anyway - i wasn't forced into buying some cheapo shit from wal-mart just because my baggage was lost.... Phil has amazing taste in brands, and whisky - and supports made in US clothing to boot (no pun intended)... he knows his stuff. Higher quality costs more but it will last a lifetime, and if you're looking to get hooked up with great threads or treads, go to Totem and support local businesses. read more

Loved this store and their well-curated selection of gear but ran into a problem earlier this week: I had bought a pair of Adidas shoes on sale, which I later learned were a poor fit for what I had told staff I needed them for and which nearly every online seller sold for far less than Totem's sale price. I took them back, only to be told that sales items were ineligible for returns. When I explained why I was unhappy, the manager informed me it was on me to do my research before I buy anything. Well... that's technically correct. But who needs a store, especially one specializing in outdoors gear, that neither is priced competitively nor dispenses good advice? Here was a chance to right a wrong at little cost, but all I got was an attitude with more than a hint of derision. read more

I bought a gift for my husband here yesterday. Today i gave it to him, a beautiful straight edge razor, and he's too scared to use it! No problem, everything is sealed in its package, its obviously not used. The salesman knew i was buying a gift, but he didn't mention to me that its un non-returnable item, which i found out today as i tried to return it. Less than 24 hours later, sealed box, nope. Warn your customers about your return policies, especially when they're buying $60 non-returnable items. read more

If we could give the store less than one star, we would. We recently purchased an expensive Patagonia jacket for our son - online. The item was discounted by about $20, from the original price of $220. When the jacket arrived, we realized it was too small. The store would not accept the return - citing the reason "due to the discount," nor would they process the exchange because "they are out of all sizes." We are now stuck with an expensive item we have no use for. You'd think in the current environment, when most people have been shopping exclusively online for nearly a year, the seller would at least make a minimal effort to accommodate their customers. Wow - a men's store where you truly get what you pay for. There has been a rise in the number of independent stores and chains focusing on men's fashions in Philly, and it is a wonderful sight to behold. However, much of the stock tends to be one note (ala Polo store) or overpriced considering the quality (ala Barney's). Enter Totem Brand - an unassuming shop on South Street - that proudly and not-so-loudly boasts Filson and Wolverines, among other choice labels, for the style & budget conscious Philadelphia man. True that price points are on the higher end - but with this quality, it's well worth it. Also interesting to note a sizeable collection of American Apparel (often styles not in stock at either Walnut Street Store), Taylor Stitch, and my personal favorite - Archival. And, yes, the owner is friendly, knowledgeable, and bright. I'm a convert. read more

Awesome store. Great variety of apparel and the store set up is super comfortable. The owner and staff are more than accommodating and went the extra mile to make sure that I was happy with what I was purchasing (I spent 2 hours in the store trying on jackets and asking them a million questions). Found this men's store while walking to dinner at Serpico and, like the previous reviewer said, was surprised to find such a gem on South Street. They have brands like Fjallraven, Red Wing, Pointer Brand, Filson, and many more great quality items. The ambiance is rustic American and the owner is very helpful and friendly. Finally, a store Philadelphia needs. This is THE men's store. They were really helpful and friendly. All their brands scream quality. Just stop in and feel the material and see the stitching for yourself. Most of their products are american made. They have hand made Taylor Stitch dress shirts and hand made jeans by Raleigh Denim and they also have Norman Porter jeans made in Philadelphia. Need to get Red Wing boots or Wolverine boots next time I stop in. They're the best american made boots you can buy. I bought a ton of plain shirts that are super soft made from Organic cotton and Hemp its by Jungmaven. Also got Pointer Brand jeans which are great price for american made, hand sewn with White Oak Cone Denim for $73, a steal considering some $300 plus jeans use the same Denim from the same supply. They have so many candles to choose from, my favorite is the hand cut wine bottles and they use natural premium soy wax (great gifts too). Think the company is called ReWined. And a lot of organic lotions and natural face wash, shaving cream, etc. A lot of leather goods too from keychains to wallets by tanner goods and apolis. They have too many bags to choose from, Filson, Kelty, Frost River. The brands i can remember are, Filson, Deus Ex machina, Tellason, Iron and Resin, Pointer Brand, Danner boots, Eastland, Red Wing, Marmot, Fjallraven, Taylor Stitch, Schott, Ruel and Ray, Tellason, Norman Porter, momataro, flatheads, Frost River, Billy Kirk, Tanner goods. So many things I want. Will be back. Thanks for the good customer service when i stopped in. oh yeah i recommend the Ursa Face Balm and face tonic and cleaner and Imperial Pomade are the best. Stumbled onto this place while walking down South Street and was shocked, because most of South Street is such garbage. Philly desperately needed a store like this. Not many stores like this on South Street. When i entered the store i was immediately impressed with its classy design and the name brands that i couldn't find anywhere else. They have high quality individual stitched jeans to trendy jackets and boots. Come here if you like quality fashionable outerwear.
