My friend and I were doing a girls weekend for her granddaughters birthday and booked a weekend here. Check in was a breeze, desk clerk was super nice and professional. Loved our room, it faced the main drag, had a mini fridge and chair with dresser and 2 queen beds. We woke up Saturday morning to the smell of bacon all through the hotel. Yum!! When the dining room opened we ate breakfast. The sausage gravy was very good, biscuits baked just right, fried egg was on point, oj was good. The bath towels were some of the best I've ever encountered in a hotel - large, soft, thick. All of the staff we encountered were very pleasant and helpful. Only thing I would recommend would be a 2nd trash can in the room. Will definitely be back. read more

Stayed here over the Mardi Gras weekend and it was an absolute blast. They welcomed us (all 10 of us) with opened arms and treated us like family the whole stay. Chelsea was our amazing bartender and Tony served us waffles at midnight when we got hungry. Clean, accommodating, within walking distance to all the bars and restaurants. Although we loved the location and charm of this hotel, there was no hot water! Apparently they have a tankless hot water system and it is recommended to let the faucets run before expecting hot water. No time frame was given. On a 2-night stay, the first morning we were limited on time and letting it run 5-10 minutes was not enough so no showers for our party of 3. The second morning I woke up early to turn both faucets on wide open. After an hour there was still no hot water. No front desk person at 8:30am and no one in housekeeping could be located. I called both customer service numbers posted. No answer. I wandered around the small hotel several times and finally went by the kitchen of the adjoining restaurant. A staff worker said she would call someone. The water in my room is still running & still no hot water. An hour & 40 mins later from first starting the water, hotel staff told me she had to flip a switch on the hot water system. That did nothing for the water in our room. Still ice cold. She opened an empty clean room and we were able to take showers there. Word of advice, if you do end up staying- do not stay in Room #8. Also, the noise from the music from the downstairs restaurant on Friday night was extremely loud in our room. On a good note, waking up to the smell of bacon on both mornings was pretty awesome although we did not eat there as we had other plans. For the amount of money we spent on this 2-night stay, my expectations were a lot higher for this hotel. read more

My experience here can be compared to a rollercoaster ride...fun overall, but with many ups, downs, and bumps along the way. First, the owner is unprofessional and "touchy" so to speak. He gets defensive easily when approached with a problem or concern. If it was not for the way he manages his business and the high room rates, this place would most likely received a better rating. Aside from the management, this hotel is really neat. It looks old and outdated, but it fits since the place has a lot of history. The actual rooms, however, were clean and a bit more updated. The bed was VERY comfortable! The shower, however was made for a midget (which I am at 5'0" so it didn't bother me much) and my poor boyfriend had to duck down under the shower head to get some rinsing action. I thought it was funny... HI BERNIE! The bar/restaurant had some delicious breakfast and had Michelob Golden Light on tap so that made my weekend!! They don't serve this glorious beer in Missouri, sadly. (hint, hint) Overall, I would stay here again, but that is probably because it is the only hotel to around the main Grafton area. The BFF and I recently took a weekend trip to Grafton, Alton & St. Louis. Since we're ghost and paranormal nerds, we chose to stay the night here. The hotel itself is gorgeous, if you like the old-fashion, going back in time feel - which we definitely do. The room (supposed haunted room #11), was actually pretty modern, with beautiful stain glass above the door. My only regret was our trip agenda was jam-packed, so besides dropping off our luggage and taking a quick trip around the place, we ended up getting back around midnight and passing out. I'd love to return back here and actually enjoy my time at Ruebel. Side note, the owner Moe was very kind and accommodating. Side-side note, nothing haunted happened really. But even if it did, we both fell asleep pretty quickly. Granted there was ONE moment during the night where one of our toiletries bag fell down the side of the couch. Both of us went on high alert at that point, but honestly, it could have been gravity. Who knows... read more

This hotel is very old and very nice. It is also very clean. The owner, Mo was pleasant and accommodating and has great taste in shirts. He also appears to be at the hotel 24 hours a day. We stayed in Room #9 and our relatives stayed in room #11. This was the only place in town to get breakfast so the dining area was PACKED on Saturday. The dining area was closed for dinner due to the staffing problems that everyone is having. We had a very nice breakfast there on Sunday. The wait time on the food was good considering the staffing problems. Our waitress was great. The food was great. One thing to note: do not pay any attention to complaints about the hot water. They use a tankless heating system and there are signs all over the hotel informing people of that fact. The hotel was built in 1879 so indoor plumbing was obviously installed after the hotel was built. Don't expect spacious bathrooms. We will definitely stay there again. read more

This has to be the absolute worst dining experience I've had in my life. When we arrived, there was only one other couple in the restaurant. As we looked at our menus, another party of 3 arrived. As we ordered, one more couple arrived. I only point this out to show that they were not busy. I asked the waitress for a recommendation. She recommended the fish, angus burger, and pizza. She said the burger was so big that she was full eating one before she even began eating her sides. Great! As it came with 2 sides and they had no children's menu, I thought it perfect to split with my 5 year old light eater. My husband ordered the catfish sandwich. They had a mediocre beer selection but that's ok. My husband ordered one of their signature drinks that was way too sweet with half melted ice when it arrived. So, he ordered a Knob Creek over ice. It was apparent they had no experienced bartender. We waited for our food. The couple that came in after us was served. That made me perk up but maybe they got something already prepared. We waited longer...30 minutes. Then the people that came as we ordered were served. Therefore, we asked the waitress where our food was. She said they only had one cook. My husband said that shouldn't matter as our order should have been first. She said our order was next. Our food then came. Angus burger? It looked like my high school's cheap processed meat burger. It was not fresh but made from a frozen patty. It was not large, either. The high school cafeteria comparison was valid. The fries looked battered and peppered, which I typically enjoy. My salad did not make it to the table. The catfish was large, though my husband didn't get to taste it. His fries didn't arrive. The owner came to the table and told my husband it took so long to make our food because I ordered a burger. Are you kidding me? The high school burger took 30 minutes? No. He then said it was because of the fish, too. Maybe but the other people that were served before us had fish. As the owner continued to justify their obvious error, we'd had enough and announced we were leaving. The owner yelled at my husband, my husband yelled back, and I gathered my purse. I was going to offer to pay for the drinks if the owner stopped yelling but he told us to get out before he called the police. I'm guessing I wasn't walking fast enough because he yelled again for me to hurry and get out. I informed him I'm in chemotherapy right now and walking as fast as I could. He called us a bunch of expletives and we left. They made an error. Had the owner acknowledged that and offered some sort of compensation, the outcome would have been different. I probably would have ordered something else and given my 5 year old the burger. We were there and hungry. Instead, it was a disaster. It's ok, though. This review is directed at the restaurant only. We were on the hunt for breakfast food in Grafton on a Sunday morning - not an easy find. We stumbled upon the Ruebel and decided to go for it. It was essentially a breakfast brunch buffet. Needless to say - it did not consist of anything special. The basics: mixed fruit, bread that you could toast yourself, eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, gravy, and biscuits. Considering I had burned 2500+ calories the day prior and had not eaten much - I was starving, and this selection hit the spot. I can't say that the quality was that great - it was just ok. Most of the patrons were constantly waiting for gravy and/or biscuits. They never seemed to have both on hand simultaneously. The coffee was simply amazing, though. Unfortunately, they had Joel the Jesus freak blaring on the big screen, which was slightly obnoxious. The price was right - $6.50 per person, which is certainly reasonable. The service was fine - our server was cordial and kept our coffee cups constantly filled, and the owner was milling around chatting it up with us and other customers. I would probably recommend this for breakfast purposes considering there aren't very many in Grafton - especially on church day. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Now that we've gotten all the positives out of the way. This was probably one of the worst locations I've ever stayed in. While it seems like a quiant bed + breakfast the reality is it's an overpriced poorly services motel. There are no phones in the room, no thermostats, and the showers are literally built for small people. Also there are physical keys for each room. There's a restaurant attached right to the hotel owned by the same people and the customer service for both seemed on the same level. Terrible. When greeted for check in someone behind the counter stated, "well this is my day off, but I guess I can check you in." Oh so polite. Then at the restaurant we were accused of walking out on a breakfast bill the secon day we were there. We were informed because the waitress stated the whole bill was taken out of her tips. When I approached the manager to suggest that we review the previous days credit card transactions he became very aggressive and said that if did walk out on the bill not to worry about it and that the waitress did not lose any money. This place seems to be the only locaiton in the hospitality business in town and they seem to be strong arming the business with high prices a loose definition of the word "hospitality." read more

This review is for the restaurant only. Went for a casual drive up to Pere Marquette on Sunday and decided to stop in Grafton on the way home for a bite. Everything looked pretty busy and wasn't really in the mood for river fish so stopped at Ruebel's for lunch at around 1:30 p.m. Didn't expect much but figured I couldn't go wrong with the burger. I ordered the regular burger for $5.95 and specifically asked if the patties were hand-made. Yes, of course they are. Wife ordered the haddock sandwich for $7.95. Sides were an additional $2,50 for 2 including salad, baked potato, slaw, fries. I skipped the sides and ordered a basket of fried mushrooms for $4.95 and skins for $4.95. After about 5 minutes the waitress advised that the skins would be 30 minutes because they were making fresh baked. Good sign if you ever go back and want fresh skins. Skipped the skins. Had 2 diet cokes for $1.75 each with unlimited refill. Mushrooms arrive, approximately 12 count with ranch. They were okay taste/size wise. Waitress was a little drifty, but eventually recognized that we needed refills. Food finally arrives. My burger was about the size of a Whopper Jr. I had to ask for condiments. All-in-all, it had a little flavor, but for that price it was way too small. Wife's fish was okay, but the bun disintegrated in her hands when she picked it up. I have heard rumors that Ruebels used to be "the" place to go for grub and drinks in Grafton. Apparently, those golden days have passed. I would eat there again if I was desperate, but otherwise I'll hold my appetite until Alton and get twice as much for half the price. read more

I was really impressed with the owner of this hotel, who seemed to be always doing some chore in the restaurant or in the hotel, and whom I could tell genuinely cared about the needs and wishes of each of his customers. I was most impressed in the restaurant, where it appeared to me there was an equal number of hotel guests and "regulars" from the area. He took equal care of each, including helping an old man on with his coat and showing my husband and I how to use the tea-pot-contraption. When our waiter wasn't fast enough, he took care of bringing the tea himself and then checked back to make sure we had everything we needed. The only downside was the small size of the bathroom in our room, where there is literally no room to put any toiletries (although you can get creative and use the back of the sofa). But the room was cute, clean, and appropriated decorated with period pieces - like stepping back in time. The hotels is within walking distance of so much - quaint shops, bars, wineries with music, etc. Also the shuttle for the Aerie Winery will pick you up here for free. The cozy experience here due to having a polite, caring owner is hard to find anywhere. This historic place is truly a gem for Grafton! read more

I did not stay at the hotel but had lunch at the restaurant. I stopped by here with my extended family on a rainy July 3. Poor Grafton was hurting for business over the holiday weekend secondary to bad weather so we had the run of the place. The service was okay if a bit flustered...large parties seem to have that effect around these parts. That sad it all went fine in terms of that. I got a very good chef salad and my wife the thin crust veggie pizza...both much better than what we expected. My sister was disappointed with her burger, she could not quite her finger on it but said that something was just a bit off. The worst was my brother-in-law who ordered the Buffalo Fritters. Like him I assumed that this would be chicken strips with buffalo sauce....sort of makes sense right? But no, these were catfish fried catfish fillets. With no hot sauce. Not sure where the buffalo comes in, I can get the fritters bit but why buffalo? Why not just call them catfish fritters? Anyway, it was an interesting venue and some food options were good. This place was freakin terrible. The service was awful. We were given two body washes and no shampoo - which is totally fine. When my husband went to ask for a shampoo because we had none, the owner said "every room has a shampoo." Which is just bizarre. So my husband pressed on, explaining that we didn't. The owner grumbled that there were "a lot of people staying here right now" in a whining tone and dug around in the housekeeping cart. He eventually handed over the tiny hotel sized shampoo bottle. Our friends stayed in a different room (for the same price) and their room was small, oddly shaped, with a sink outside of the bathroom and in the room itself. Our room was relatively normal, but I'm not sure how there were both "standard" rooms. Additionally, the hotel tried to give our room away on the day of our arrival because my credit card had expired in the 6 months since my booking date. The hotel advertised free wifi, a scarce resource in the pit that is Grafton IL, but I could not pick up wifi on my iPhone. I called the front desk to ask if it was down. When she insisted it was not, I asked for the name of the network. She told me the network was "Ruebel Hotel" which it, in fact, was not at all. I was eventually able (no thanks to the staff) to pick up a weak signal on my laptop, but never any wifi (or cell reception) on my phone. Grafton seems like a really cute place to be. We went for a friend's wedding which was beautiful in an industrial building by the river. If you are traveling to Grafton, I suggest spending the extra money to stay in St Louis. read more

We came here for a simple breakfast before boating for the day, the breakfast was surprisingly delicious, cheap, and plenty!! Our service was prompt and attentive, we even asked our server if he knew of a sandwich shop close so we could grab some subs before heading out on the water. He said they had a sandwich shop next door but it didn't open till noon... it was 9:30. Our server was SO NICE and offered to just go over there and make the sandwiches anyways... me and my boyfriend were so astonished at the level of service and genuine kindness!! The Ruebel was such a disappointment! The family and I went there on the 26th of October, the peak of Grafton tourism, we get there about 12:30 and was wanting to eat outside because of the beautiful day. We were told that they had nobody to wait on the people outside so nobody can seat out there. Then with about 12 open table we were told it will be a 20 minute wait . After 30/35 minutes we were seated.the server came over and asked if we knew what we wanted to drink and to eat. I Told her I would like to see a menu 1st. We ordered our food which took about 45/50 minutes for two hamburgers and two chicken strip meals, which btw everything is a la carte, and some mozzarella sticks. The food was good but not for $50 & while we waited for the food we saw the bad management at its finest! The servers yelling at the manager the manager doing the same all in front of everyone. People getting angry because the food was taking so long and to remind you this is just typical bar and grill food nothing fancy. hearing the server tell people" I know the wait is long but the food is good so that makes it worth it." No, not really! & then I watched as they turned 25 people away because they managed it so poorly! One lady asked if she could make reservations and come back later the owners wife told her no! WTF who does that as a business owner!? All in all I would not go back! There is so much more that I could post about this place but it would read like reading War and Peace! read more

We stayed at the Ruebel the last weekend of June. So it was hotter than heck, no matter if you were inside or outside. We really enjoyed the bar and the service was good. We had breakfast on a Saturday morning and it was very good, too. Our room was # 19 and overlooked the Main st. It was very clean and had central air. Which is very important to me, since it was 100+ degrees in the shade that weekend. I think the rooms are way overpriced, but they have the market cornered b/c there's not many places to stay right in Grafton. The owner was cordial, and the employees were very accomidating. He still will not refund my money although this is "no fault of my own". He has ruined my 32nd anniversary and he doesn't even care. He also doesn't plan on finding out why the hotel is listed as a pet -friendly hotel when he claims it is not, so obviously, other customers may have the same issue - BEWARE. He has been rude, a bully and very impatient. I wouldn't book a room at this hotel as you may experience the same POOR customer service and downright rude treatment. I am a business owner myself and I would never treat someone with such disrespect. We had a great time today. We sat outside on the patio and the weather was fantastic. The fried mushrooms were excellent. The sweet potato fries have a sugar/cinnamon/mesquite seasoning on them, they were good. The catfish special was really fantastic, the fish wasn't too "muddy", which is what I was as afraid of. Both cheeseburgers were cooked to the temperature that was ordered. The four, instead of five stars, is because the pork tenderloin sandwiches were not what we expected. The tenderloin was small. It was not as big as a traditional pork tenderloin sandwich. Overall, we had a blast! Table of 5-$100 tab on a beautiful day!! Not a bad adventure. read more

We stopped buy the Ruebel Hotel to have a drive as a stop on our way home. We had tried to get a room there a few days prior to that night, but they were booked. It's a locally owned 22 room hotel. The owner was there working the front desk of the hotel and kept coming into the bar area making sure things ran smooth. We had great service and we were really impressed with the place. We told the owner we had tried to stay the night but they were booked. He asked us if we had planned to stay again in the future. We said we did, he said he would give us 30% off our room price due to the inconvenience. It was totally not necessary but was a great gesture. We are looking forward to our upcoming stay. read more

Very quaint little place. Make sure to get the captains quarters. It had two very comfortable beds. The only problems we had with the room was that the sink was outside of the restroom and we wished the room would have had a refrigerator. There was a nice deck area for us, but we did not use it. The owner was very cool. He was very nice and I thought he was hilarious. The bar area was awesome. The bartender was very patient with us and served stiff drinks. Overall I would recommend this place because it was reasonably priced, close to all of the wineries, and we had a lot of fun. read more

This is only for the restaurant/bar. We decided to take a break from our walk around the beautiful town of Grafton for a drink. From the outside, I wasn't expecting the interior. It was a very classy looking place! It was virtually vacant, which was nice because the servers were 100% attentive to us. They had a $2 special on Fox Barrel ciders -- a steal! I pay at least $5 at Global Brew in O'Fallon. I don't usually use this adjective about bathrooms, but they were positively beautiful! Immaculately clean and well-decorated. Food was good and service was great. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck area. The hotel looks beautiful! My only complaint is how noisy Grafton has gotten. The motorcycles were ridiculous. I mean, I am not anti-bike by any stretch, but is it really necessary to let them drive through town blaring stereos and revving up their engines? We were walking down the street and could not even hear each other talking. Grafton needs to decide what kind of place it is going to be. If it is just going to just be a loud place with a bunch of drunks everywhere, they are going to lose a lot of people who went there for a relaxing day by the river. Kind of sad to see what it is becoming. The city planners (are there any? seems like stuff is just getting slapped up anywhere) should look at towns like Eureka Springs to see how it can be done to accommodate lots of different kinds of people. Definitely some kind of noise ordinances are needed in Grafton. read more

This place looked really nice and classy online so we stopped here for a drink. While sitting in the restaurant we watched the owner (who was holding a glass of wine, one of many apparently) provoking a verbal altercation with a customer, who just walked in the door, in the middle of the restaurant!!! It was a very awkward situation for everyone. After being a witness to that we left without finishing our drinks. The hourly wait staff were great, the owner could probably take some customer service pointers from her bartender. We will never go back. For the price of the rooms you can get an excellent B&Bs, where the owners appreciate your business. read more

DO NOT book at this hotel. The staff is so rude. I called to inquire about blocking off rooms for my wedding and the person that answered the phone was extremely rude. He began by telling me to email my credit card information to him, and when I asked if I could do it over the phone he began to to yell at me! He even went so far as to tell me it was too early for me to call him! It was 9:30 AM! It's so ridiculous its actually funny. Clearly, I immediately retracted my offer to book rooms with him. This place is a hole, I ordered a large pizza for carry out. When I picked it up I thought there was a mistake, it was 12 inches. This is a medium everywhere else. It was $15.00 I asked if there was a mistake and the hosier bar waitress stated that they only serve one size. Let me start by saying they have AWFUL service at the restaurant side of the hotel. We came for a late lunch around 3 pm and were the only people in the restaurant. We came with a group of 6 for my grandparents anniversary to have some fish. We walked in and there was no-one eating but there was a dirty table that for the whole hour we sat and ate no one even acknowledged. They had Pandora playing on their radio throughout the place with unedited songs of Eminem, 50 cent, and Snoop Dogg. Played for about 15 minutes before I had to ask them to change it because it was F*** this and F*** that. I typically listen to the music in my personal truck but it's not quite professional for a hotel restaurant. We sat without drinks while the bartender and waitress sat outside smoking for about 10 minutes and when she came in she asked if we needed anything and quickly walked away while we clearly had empty glasses.. when she brought our cheese sticks out she dropped one off the plate and then picked it up and went to the back and walked right back out with a cheese stick on a plate. We were the only people in the restaurant so I'm not sure how she got another cheese stick that quickly, but we'll leave that at that. I typically tip 20% for good service and 15% if the service is lacking. I didn't feel that she deserved 5%. I could go on and on with all the things wrong with the service.. my best advice would be to keep going down the street somewhere else. Or go to shop n save and make your own fish.! Would love to give a 0 star review but it's not an option!! read more

Admittedly, part of our experience was our own fault; with that said, I have never been treated so poorly at a hotel or dining establishment in my life. We booked an impromptu night at the Ruebel Hotel on a Saturday evening as we were driving down to Grafton. We decided to meet up with friends at a winery before checking in to the room. As often happens, we were enjoying the company so much that we never did stop to check in to the hotel until after 11 pm. Upon arrival, we found the front desk empty, with a number to call to check in. Not a problem. We called the number (which took a few tries as cell service in Grafton is spotty to say the least) and a very young man (the owner's son) came bounding down the stairs and asked us if we would wait to check in while he finished his game of Halo. We waited, fuming, and as he came back down and was processing our check-in we mentioned that we didn't care for waiting while he played a video game. He became increasingly offensive, referred to us as drunks and alcoholics, and threatened to call the cops. That will be the first and last time I ever stay at the Ruebel Hotel while under the current ownership. read more

This a review for the restaurant. My husband and I visited on Saturday February 18, 2012. The atmosphere was wonderful and our waitress friendly. Ordered Angus burgers and onion rings. When the food arrivied I was surprised at the small portion of onion rings - 7 onion rings of various sizes - a few quite small - for $5.25. I commented to the waitress and she said yes it is a small order. Of course that would have been helpful to know up front. In addition the largest of the 7 onion rings was inedible because the onion was the tough outer skin. Oh well on to the burgers. We both ordered our burgers medium rare. They both came out well done. When the waitress finally came over to check on us we told her about the burgers and she said, "I can't believe the cook did that again. He overcooked the burgers a few days ago too". There was no offer to recook our burgers or anything to accomodate the problem. I told her how disappoiinted I was and she apologized. That was the end of it. We paid our bill and doubt we'll ever go back. Shame because a little customer service and empowerment could have turned this around. read more

We had a "Today's coupon deal" we purchased for the Ruebel Hotel. The coupon was only good Monday through Thursday - so we went last Thursday 11/15/2012. We arrived at 5 minutes to 3:00 to a dark, empty hotel. A laminated sheet of paper with a phone number to call at check in was at the registry desk. I was able to track down a cook in the back of the kitchen who called the manager to get us checked in. I asked for a specific room I had heard was the "nicest" room. The cook called and asked the manager and he told him not to allow us to have that room. There was NO ONE staying at the hotel that night so that room was available. The hotel was totally empty!! He gave us a room that supposedly had a "view" - it was a view of the hotel rooftop. The rooms had a stench and were small and the decor was the bare minimal and frankly unattractive and creepy. I went in to the tiny bathroom and shut the door and the door didn't close all the way - so I went back down and asked if I could have different room where the door closed. The cook again called the manager and I could hear him complaining because I was asking to change rooms. My husband stepped in at that point and said "let's just go!" - so we left and went to Pere Marquette and were greeted by a kind lady and stayed in a very nice room. We have traveled a lot and have spent literally hundreds of nights in many different hotels. The management at the Ruebel was the absolute worst I have EVER encountered! The rooms were unattractive and the whole experience was absolutely horrible! Stay away from the Ruebel Hotel! I had to put a number of stars to complete this review - but I would not give it 1 star - how about minus 10? read more
