Absolutely fantastic place. The moment you open the door it smells like MEAT and you can see them behind the counter preparing all of it. Some of the staff here, my first time in, were a bit rude and dismissive, but every time since has been really warm, welcoming, and nice even from those same exact people. I think number one is two things but both equally the most important. You'd expect a local butcher to be quite expensive but the prices here are only about 1 dollar more than the grocery stores in the area. The other thing, also which you'd expect but would be correct in this case, is the quality of meat being WAY BETTER. This is some of the best meat I've ever cooked with and just tastes, smells, and looks so much better. I always come in for more ground beef and end up coming out with a bit more (usually at least some jerky). Truly a great place! The really amazing thing is that you can see and smell - not just taste - the difference. Store bought ground beef is so greasy and seeps out that nasty thick brownish liquid when cooking it, this doesn't, it also has a smell, this doesn't smell like anything but meat. Fantastic store! Locally owned butcher shop. The make their own sausages and beef sticks. Decent selection in both the freezers and at the counter. Some dry goods and snacks, small selection of beer and wine. Also vodka and bourbon for fabulous cocktails. Staff is friendly and helpful. I normally don't post reviews or comment on things on the net. I have to this time because I just made the best prime rib I ever ate. This past week end we had a small family reunion and I wanted some good meat for the grill. I had heard about Rumps and thought I would give them a try. I called ahead and ordered a boneless prime rib. When I picked it up I was surprised to find it already tied and vacuum packed. It looked really nice but looks don't mean it will taste as good as it looks. I seasoned it up with a salt and pepper garlic rub and made it on the grill spit with some hickory chips for a little smoked flavor. Everyone said it was the best prime they ever had. My wife and I pop in occasionally and love the product . We have had your pork chops. Pastrami , which was about as good as your gonna get in the Midwest . The sausage is great. We get our ground lamb as well for Shepard's pie. So...yes...you pay more but it's a premium product, Now , that being said, exactly how much do you have to spend to get that guy who works the register to say "hello" or even "thank you"? Just curious, as he has never been pleasant. Premium product customers have choices. BTW my wife was in your ladies room today and unless you use Spleef scented Glade at around 3:30 today someone was sparking it up big time . But I guess that none of our business. read more

An old time butcher shop, in a brand new building. Rumps is a full service butcher shop in downtown Altoona. While many of the local grocery's have butchers (Mega, Gordy's, but not Woodmans), Rumps and Sokups are the only real butcher shops in the Chippewa Valley. Most of the other operations are just cut and wrap shops. Rumps (and Sokups) actually break down the animals, make their own sausage and bacon, smoke their own meats, all on site, etc. Very high quality meats - even their choice meats look a lot closer to prime than most grocery stores meats look even close to choice. Great bacon (buy it early before the holidays - they ran through 800 lbs of bacon the day before Christmas Eve!), nice meats and store made sausages. Being in a new store, its all stainless steel and tile, very clean. They also sell cheese, wine and beer (in a limited selection). Rumps is really all about the meat. read more

Bought some pulled pork for sandwiches but it was so good I couldn't bear to put it on bread. Love their meats especially the bacon but my new favorite is pulled pork. Do yourself a favor and try some. read more

The brats have always been good. Just paid $12 for some elk sticks. They were nowhere near as good as elk sticks should be. Way over priced for what they are. The cheese curds I bought were said to be fresh. No they were serval days old and rather nasty. This place has a few good things but they are over priced. read more

You won't find a better Ribeye. The bone in ribeye is my favorite. The filet mignons are great as well. Much higher quality meat than any store around and at comparable prices. There are many other great options of bacon, whole chickens, pork, beer sticks, etc. read more

Paid $22 per pound for beef tenderloin (filet mignon). Awful! Couldn't cut it, and couldn't eat it. Sorry, won't go there again.
