The Butcher Shop is a local gem that I nominate to receive a world heritage site designation. If you've read my other reviews, you might note that I have a verifiable "thing" about old-school establishments and The Butcher Shop for me ticks all the old school boxes: glass cases displaying all on offer; butchering table a bit behind glass cases where meats are cut by these Rembrandts of protein; and succulent meats. Proper butchers greet you upon entering this Wisconsin shrine to meat and prepare to magnificent perfection the exact cut of meat you order. On this my first trip and after recovering my senses having been wowed by this little shop hidden in the woods, my particular friend and brother Bunky and I ordered porterhouse steaks (1 1/2" thick), 1"-thick boneless ribeye for the kids and for another day 1 1/2" center loin, boneless pork chops, and strips of double smoked bacon for the rotkohl to be served with pork chops. All meats will of course be grilled, steaks for 7 minutes on each side to yield charred, medium rare steaks. Oh, let me not forget to mention the smoked salmon that is so tasty and served as our biscuit for making the journey between lake cabin and The Butcher Shop. My particular friend and brother, Bunky enjoys a nearby lakeside cabin and will return as will I when next in Wisconsin. Best butcher shop in the area. Great product. Great service. Great workers. How could you ask for anything more. Pick from a large variety of cuts or talk to the guys about bringing in your own harvest for them to process. Everything from meats to cheese to seasonings. A one stop shop. read more

I do like the self service area when I can do it myself, but most of the time I use cash and have to be forced to repacking my groceries when I get to the car. The best reason to go there is the Caribou Coffee shop. They are the best. Far better in taste compared to the Starbucks one, oh and the service is down to earth and friendly. I'll stop there regardless if I need any groceries or not whenever I'm in Rice Lake.

He made recommendations and even advised the best way to serve a couple of the specialty cheeses we purchased. He even went out of his way to bag some fresh cheese curds for us because they had run out and they had just been delivered right before we arrived. This shop was recently purchased by two young men that are working hard to provide your protein needs. They are constantly adding new products while retaining the core offering. Their homemade sausages, double smoked bacon, cut-to-order steaks and aged Wisconsin cheese selection is fantastic. The men added several new sauces, rubs, dips and spices. Yes, they even have bread now! Great to see. A real asset to the area. Customers come for miles to shop at this "gem in the woods". PS They will process your venison too. Great recipes including my favorite, Venison with jalapeno peppers and cheddar cheese. Of course, they will make/smoke your favorites. read more
