The staff and owners have been super helpful on both running and what apparel works best for each individual, shoutout to Dallas who took around an hour to thoroughly explain the different shoes and gear they had. I got there at 6:15 pm and was asked how she could help me. I told her I wanted some walking/running shoes. There were two men in the store. She rang one up and went back to helping the other guy. They are supposed to close at 7. At 6:30 she tells me she will not be able to help me and gave me a 10 off card to use when I come back. Midtown is growing and there is a new shoe store in the area. I found them on social media and followed them from their opening. What's cool about Run Detroit? Well, one of the co-owners has a medical background and both are runners. Who better to help you get fitted for a running shoe then someone who runs and has a background in orthopedics. I went in to get a new shoe as my old pair were not the best for my type of arch. Mind you I had visited another running shoe store to get fitted for them. Run Detroit is different. I went in this evening and Justin spent about 45 minutes walking me through the process of choosing a good running shoe for the support I need. I tried on at least 7 different shoes with his guidance and walked away with a pair that provide the support I need. I was blown away by the level of service and his knowledge of the problems I had. It was well worth the visit compared to buying a pair of shoes from a big box store without assistance in a proper fit. It is so important to have a good fit in a shoe and worth the cost. I have bought cheap shoes and my back paid for it. I've tried expensive shoes that were not the right support which left my pockets and feet in pain. I am confident in my shoe purchase and will go back when I need a new pair. In addition to selling running shoes and apparel, they hold a group run every Saturday at 8am rain or shine. There is a have 3, 6 and 10 mile route option for runners, walkers, and in-between. I am participating in the Couch to 5k run group to prepare for the Mustache Dache in November. Okay let me say this right out the gate, I'm not an avid runner... but lately I've been on that exercise binge and have started to take to running and training for a 5k. After years of trial and much error looking for a shoe that can hold up to the abuse that my giant feet put them through and not make my knees or back hurt after exercise I took the advice of a friend and visited RUNdetroit. Being totally honest I went in totally skeptical! I've been to run places before and have been disappointed time and time again after spending good money on the wrong shoes for me. This place was a totally different experience. My family and I were greeted warmly by the staff, the employee was actually listing to me as I talked to him explaining my situation because he pointed out somethings that I said as we were looking at different shoes. He then looked at my prior shoes and asked some more questions. He then pointed out somethings in a shoe that I should be looking for and explained clearly why. After he pulled out multiple shoes for me to try that were potential candidates for me and watched me run/jog up and down the street seeing if they were being effective. During the whole process I never felt rushed during or pressured to buy anything. In the end I did get a new pair of running shoes and have been using them for about a week now or ten miles of running and they have been great. The sweet spot in Detroit. Most of the specialty run shops are in the burbs for many reasons you probably want to hear but I can't satisfy all your needs in a Yelp review but RunDetroit can satisfy all your run needs. The knowledge of the man measuring me, listening to me, educating me, sharing with me, watching my walk and run was beyond the basics. I learned he is a former medical professional who is well aware of the issues and needs of runners and athletes. I am thankful he was open to listening and educating me on what to look and feel for in a shoe. I tried on a few shoes and although I was biased based on the style and color the shoe I chose was best fitting. I was able to walk around the store and outside in each shoe before making a decision. I even tried on shoes that weren't typically for my foot style. We explored for the best fit not what I was supposed to wear. There was no up-sell for socks or inserts he was concerned with fitting me in the right shoe. His goal from the moment I told him was to get me the shoe that would get me running regularly. I found a wide shoe and although I wanted to go for something smaller I learned to give my foot room for running. I'm still adjusting as one foot is larger I will return here for the best option. read more

We went into this store as my grandfather is having hip pain and has needed new shoes for a while but hates dealing with pushy sales people who never care enough to actually help him find a shoe that fits his foot. That all changed at RUNdetroit. He was working with a salesperson with a large beard (didn't catch his name), but he was extremely friendly and patient. This is my third year making an annual purchase at Run Detroit and as long as I'm a Metro Detroit resident, will be going back every year. I got my new kicks this morning and, while every employee who has ever helped me in there is patient, knowelegable and thorough, today Bridget really took good care of me. We tired on like 7 pairs of shoes and it was very clear her committment was to my fit, comfort, and safety out there running, as opposed to wanting to rush me out of the store with the most expensive shoes she could put me in. Again: that's the opposite of what happened, which was a very personalized experience. In a weird way, the one-customer-at-a-time policy makes the shopping experience even better because you get their undivided attention. Still, prior to COVID service had been good and personalized, and you never had to wait too long for someone to help you out. I'm not excited to rip through these shoes, they are after all kind of expensive, but I do always look forward to my trip to RUN Detroit each year. read more

We walked in on a Saturday and there were already a couple of patrons at the establishment. We were immediately greeted and both my husband and I got an associate to help us pick out new running shoes. They watch you walk and they had me try on at least 6 pairs of shoes, they even lace them up for you. They ask you how they feel and really dive into getting you in the best possible shoe you can buy. They couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming and most importantly knowledgeable. I will echo what other reviewers have noted - excellent customer service, I appreciate their careful procedures with taking 1:1 appointments, keeping both customers and staff safe, and they have a really good selection. They had preselected a few models based on my comments for the appointment and two of the three were a great fit. I wrote a review once before based on a very pleasant experience. An update is necessary. If I could give Run Detroit 10 stars, I would. Justin is the friendliest store owner I have ever met. He is super knowledgeable, to the point where I trust his opinion and advice more than most physical therapists. He will go out of his way to accommodate, give advice, provide feedback, have you sample anything and everything in the store; essentially anything he can do to make sure you have a great experience. I also love that Justin has a reason as to why he carries each brand. It is usually from personal experience. But it is not just a store with a bunch of random products. It is a store filled with items that are tried and tested by experienced runners, and they can give you the ins and outs as to why they love that specific brand or product over others. One of the best parts about this place is the lack of judgement by the staff. You could come in here as a seasoned runner with 20 marathons under your belt, or a beginner who is just starting to run and know nothing, you will be treated the same. Another amazing part about the store is that they don't try to encourage you to buy products. When I say that I mean that they don't put any pressure on you. They are looking out for the customs best interest and not just trying to make a sale by having you buy the most expensive shoes they can sell you. Recently, Justin spent a half hour giving me tips and advice, had me run in some shoes to give them a try, and at the end encouraged me NOT to buy a new pair. Who does that?! I bought a few things (t shirt, etc.) just to support the store and thank him for his time. I can't say enough wonderful things about this store. I've been coming to Run Detroit for a while now and have enjoyed all of my experiences at the store. The staff at Run Detroit is super knowledgeable and very customer-centric. One of my first experiences at the store was with my fiance, who wanted to buy a knee wrap. After consulting with Justin, the owner, about his knee pains, Justin actually recommended that my fiance NOT buy any wraps, but rather focus on a few key exercises to strengthen the muscles. This summarizes why I am such a fan of the store - they focus on the well-being of the consumer, not the sale. Since then, I've become a regular consumer at Run Detroit - purchasing all of my running shoes here (they do a very thoughtful and thorough shoe consultation - plan for at least 20 minutes of trying on and walking in shoes), and buying a Garmin from them (don't forget, you can try a Garmin out for a week before purchasing!). I've also been running with their Saturday run groups and consider myself a proud back-of-the-pack runner. They have 3, 6, or 10-mile routes available, and it's a great way to see Detroit. I tried several shoes on, ran in a couple, and learned several tips to help my run. It was a great idea that worked well for me and my run training. I am super confident that they'll recommend the shoe that makes most sense for me. Stopped in here back in November to pick up my packet for a 5k. I'm not really a runner (definitely a power-walker), so this is really the only "runners' store" I've ever been in, but I was impressed. The staff was super-friendly and engaging, not at all snooty or cooler-than-thou like you might expect at a specialty store. The store itself was very nice, and the prices I glanced at seemed very reasonable. Shinola is right next door and on-street parking was easy to find after work on a Friday afternoon. I'm not sure if I'll personally have the need to revisit, but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who might. read more

This is exactly the type of independent business downtown Detroit needs. I'd been procrastinating on getting new running shoes and finally decided to stop in one night after work. Justin, one of the owners, spent a ton of time listening to what I was looking for, asking me lots of questions about my running habits and any problems I was having with my legs, and letting me try on lots of pairs of shoes. After each shoe trial, he asked me questions about how much I liked it, and we added a couple different shoes to the mix once I brought in my old shoes (which I happened to have in my car). I had just done the Down & Dirty mud/obstacle course run, so my shoes were dropping chunks of dirt and dust all over their very clean floor. I felt really bad but Justin made it clear it really wasn't a big deal. I ended up picking out a pair of shoes that they didn't have in stock so he had to order them and I had a friend pick them up because I was about to leave for vacation--even though I didn't come in to the store to try them on Justin said I could bring them back if I had any problems. Turns out they're awesome and exactly what I was looking for. They also have a nice selection of clothing and sports bras in sizes for the "larger-chested" like me. It's nice to find sports bras like this in a retail store--a lot of places don't carry them and I end up ordering online and having to guess which size will work. Finally, the have a section on the wall with flyers for upcoming Detroit and running-related events--a feature I always like in stores because sometimes you don't want to go digging around the internets to find out what's going on. Oh! And as the other reviewer noted, they have a Saturday morning running group with several different mileages for a variety of skill levels. So if you're a runner (or just claim to be one like me), you should definitely check this place out! read more

THE BEST RUNNING SHOE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE EVER! A+++ The owner was patient as I asked lengthy questions and tried on stacks of shoes. I ended up purchasing a pair I thought felt right at the time. After going on a few runs in the new shoes I noticed an unfamiliar pain in my feet. When the pain did not subside, I went back to running in my old shoes. As soon as I found time, I took my new shoes back to the Run Detroit store. It was obvious from the bottoms they had been worn. I figured I would end up giving them away or selling them on eBay but I thought it was worth a shot to see if they would be willing to take them back. To my surprise, the owner said "of course!" they would take them back. She said it was their job to help me find a shoe that fits just right. After trying on a few other models I ended up special ordering a newer version of what I had been running in previously (Mizuno Wave Inspire). I took the owner's advice to order a size larger than my last pair. It has been about two weeks since I started using the new Mizuno's and my feet feel great! ALSO, if the store is still offering the Good Running Form class, it's definitely worth checking out! The owner videotaped our strides before and after learning the new techniques and the overall difference in form was impressive. I've been to many running stores, Hanson's, Running Fit, etc. and none of them compare to Justin and Run Detroit. I say Justin and Run Detroit because he is a huge part of the experience. Justin is a runner, like a serious marathon, ultra, trail and he knows his business. He'll evaluate your gait and accurately assess your needs. He's hired folks who are knowledgeable about running and its mechanics and They can advise you on everything from shoes to proper form. The also offer running clinics. At Run Detroit, they want to ensure that you have the shoe best suited for your foot and goals. They allow you to test it out by running in front of the store and if the shoe doesn't work out for you after your first few runs you can bring it back. The customer service here is second to none. Also, the shoes are you going well priced and often more affordable than at larger chains. The overall value here is immeasurable. I've been buying my shoes here for the past 2 years and I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. read more

I went in on Saturday for my first trip to RUNdetroit, and I was absolutely blown away by my entire experience and absolutely loved my entire experience. As someone who is plus sized and getting back into my fitness groove I was nervous going in because I had no idea what to expect. I have been struggling to find shoes to wear for my BeachBody on Demand workouts and after ordering and returning pretty much every athletic shoe online (or at least that's how it felt) someone suggested I find a local running store. Katie greeted me when we walked in and she was AMAZING...I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with her. She was very warm, welcoming, understanding, and most importantly knowledgeable. I feel like she took the time and made the effort to understand my issues I was having and helped me find the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. I would never have tried on the size she brought me as it is a full size larger than all of my street shoes, but it was perfect!
