I think you do. which is why, roller derby lives again! it is a ridiculously entertaining cross between WWF and NASCAR, with funky, 70's realness, 4 wheeled skates (remember those?) and an enthusiastic crowd which was mostly families and hipsters when i went. roller derby is not something I know much about, I am not the WWF type, and I have never seen the reality show (Rollergirls?) so i was pretty clueless about what was going on--but it doesn't matter. you really don't have to know the rules to enjoy it. Just have some drinks and watch the girls (and guys) in shorts fly around the banked track, knocking each other down and doing a milder version of WWF-style takedowns, complete with skate kicks, flipping out of the ring, and generally scrubbing out on a regular basis. But don't worry, kids, the violence isn't real. The fans (who presumably do know what is going on, unlike me) are very enthusiastic, there is a scoreboard and everything, and the overall effect is the fun part of a sporting event, but on fast forward. and with hair-pulling. Also the skating itself takes talent, and is pretty amazing. And they all have great nicknames. I don't think they sell drinks there (maybe beer?) so make sure you get some drinks beforehand (pick a bar, any bar, on haight street, or kezar pub is right across the street from the entrance, if you like crowded smelly sports bars). or sneak drinks in, there was no security check. There is a parking lot next door, in case you can't find anything on the street. The tickets are around $10, the seating is bleacher style, and if you are from SF, you are rooting for the Bay City Bombers--colors are orange and black, like the giants. Last time I went to root for my friend Ron, #30 (Roll, Ronny, Roll!) and we made our own signs and fit right it. If i remember right, you can get sodas and popcorn there, not much else. For $10, this is something fun and different to do on a Sat night. And, it is over at 10 or 10:30, plenty of time to go out after. The next "bout" is Sat Aug 18th @ 8PM at Kezar. If 6 were possible, that would be my rating. And the skaters and crowds here are diverse, a true reflection of S.F.and inclusive of the Bay Area folk mix. A great time for family, bf, gf, bff , buds, Derby-curious and wannabes, whatever. Wonderful to see kids there having a great time too. And NOT EXPENSIVE an event at that!! Uh, $10 general, $5 kids!! I totally enjoyed the Bombers and Orlando Thunder game in February and look forward to their next Kezar game this month against the San Diego Firebirds. I haven't seen Kezar packed with a crowd like that in long time!! Roller Derby shows competition, skill, excitement, and gets the crowd into it. I was disappointed when Roller Derby went off the air/television and the league disbanded. It's totally awesome to once again have games regularly scheduled at Kezar. Easy to get to via public transit. And adequate parking for those who drive. And that the games are again being televised on KOFY TV20. This original Roller Derby is the only sport that's co-ed in alternating periods and done on the classic banked track. I prefer the co-ed than the all-girl, flat-surface/track leagues. Skating on a banked tracked is more difficult and requires real pro skill. They kick it up a notch to a higher level. The late great Ann Calvello hailed from San Francisco and was a Bomber herself. She revered the classic co-ed Roller Derby and would be proud of her Derby deciples and fans here. I like seeing some familiar faces and the new faces. And the new expansion teams. I will always be a die hard San Francisco Bay Bombers fan. I am happy to see the Pioneers, Red Devils and Chiefs still in the league, along with a couple of new teams. I think everybody should go see their first Roller Derby game, if they haven't already. You'll get hooked like I did. Big crowd, TV cameras, lotsa action. These skaters are jumpn', not just bumpin'. And they're flyin', showin' their swift moves. Although she gets her share of hits, that Lali-O can sure dish it out!! I truly wish there were more skaters to expand the league even more!! He's had a speech delay and has had his academic struggles, so he's always had an aversion to team sports, and has even voiced that he's felt "different." We've tried to put him into other baseball and soccer when he was 4-5 years old, but he was never drawn to them. He instead preferred solo sports activities like swimming and martial arts, namely because he could progress at his own pace, without the added pressure of competition. Through a friend we met Coach Marty and it's been a blessing ever since! He has a way of easing kids into the basics of the sport, even if they've never played before and if they are shy and introverted. He's made it a fun and stress free experience and now my son LOVES the game. My son has been training with Coach Marty for about 6 months, and he went from being scared to even kick a ball with other kids around him, to running and passing the ball, shooting goals and avidly seeks to improve his game. He looks forward to every practice and cheers on his team mates. It's not just the exercise and basic soccer skills that he's taken away from this program thus far, but rather the build up of confidence, the sense of teamwork, and the enthusiasm for healthy exercise that he'll be able to use for the rest of his life. If you've got a kid that feels "different" or is shy, I'd definitely check First Step Soccer out. He or she is bound to learn more than just the game, and that's the real reward.

They played against Oakland Believers and they won! Pro AM game is set in this good sized gym called Kezar. Why do they have ramps instead of stairs? I guess its good for wheelchair access. Its completely free to go to these games and its a league where talented high school, college, and professional athletes come to play on their off season. If you're lucky you'll catch an NBA player thats in town that will play. I believe Matt Barnes is on the Dream Team and he played last week. If you're a basketball fan you will enjoy the jam packed, high energy game. Its a legit league thats been around since the 70's with referees and everything. We got to see a crazy sick dunk so that was cool. Oh and its a small crowd so you can get a great seat. There is a parking lot next to the Kezar but street parking won't be too hard either because its in the weekday evenings. Its somewhat of a seedy area so be careful.

I understand gym equipment can break from time to time but the fact that ALL stairmasters are broken, 30% of ellipticals are broken, a handful of treadmills, & the weight machines upstairs are missing pins, broken cables, etc is just pitiful from a gym like this. VARIOUS THINGS HAVE BEEN BROKEN FOR MONTHSSSS!!! The LEAST they could do is communicate to us what is going on & what they are doing to rectify this situation. I usually do not write reviews unless necessary to make a change to the establishment.
