In a nutshell, we would buy again. I can get American raised lamb from my market but it's not always good. It gets gamey. And I'm really not that into the New Zealand lamb. Our leg of lamb arrived frozen solid. I thawed it in the fridge. (Ok, sometimes, I'd take it out to let it thaw on the counter but we were in the low 60s temp wise) It was an easy roast to make and everyone just scarfed it down at Easter. I have some lamb chops in the freezer that I'm going to thaw next week. I can't wait. On to the bison. Hubby was getting bored of beef. Even grass fed beef. Enter the beloved Bison. The flavor is a bit sweeter and is very delicious. I followed the directions and prepared the steaks simply and cooked them in my cast iron pan over medium heat. They were tender and just a joy to eat. Remember that things only get shipped out Monday and Tuesday. Everything is frozen solid. So you will need to leave time for thawing. Plan ahead for that special meal. I've got to get my next order in. We're definitely converts for bison. And now I know where to get good lamb. Next up, wild boar and Elk!

The interior says bakery as it is white which to me says clean plus it smells just like a bakery should. What could be more special than being served by the owner? This is what makes a visit to a locally owned business special. My last visit was early on a Friday morning to purchase a homemade pretzel . For the record, I drove 40 miles round trip for a bagel as they are only available on Friday. Oh my! They are so good and are beautiful. I purchased one of each flavor. I can't not say which one I enjoyed more as I love a traditional salted pretzel, but garlic and Parmesan is equally as delicious. I will be back to purchase a couple to use for sandwiches. Delicious!

We're from…read moreout of town, and we'd spent the day taking scenic drives from Rochester to Winona, to La Crosse, and then up the "Apple Orchard Scenic Byway". We'd stopped at a little winery, and picked up a brochure for Southwind Orchards and we thought "YES! We want apples!". Well lucky for us, we pulled in at 4:48 on Sunday afternoon just as they were closing up. If we'd missed them, we would have been so disappointed! We ran in and picked up a couple bags of Honey-crisp apples, which are my personal fave. We also picked up a few jams/jellies and goodies (carmel, eh-hem). The Market is cute: it's not just apples, they've also got the jams/jellies, apple pies, cider and other great stuff. You could go crazy in here and by all kinds of delicious goodies. The lady who was working seemed kinda cranky, but there was a friendly gentleman (who for some reason struck me as possibly the owner...?) who said that there were bigger bags of apples they'd already put away but would be more than happy to grab for us. Which I thought was nice. The orchard is in an absolutely BEAUTIFUL valley; gorgeous apple orchards, and streams, and horses, and winding roads. It's just a gorgeous area. We enjoyed being out driving and taking in the scenery of the area. My only complaint is that they don't accept Discover card!!! UGH. My main form of payment is Discover (and, I may or may not work for them, I refuse to confirm or deny) so it kills me. Part of the reason it's 4-stars and not 5. I definitely recommend stopping here for apples and whatever other apple "accessories" you're in the market for. They've got nice stuff. Support your local farmers! As soon as we got in the car we grabbed out a couple apples and bit in - so crispy and delicious, fresh off the tree.

People's is a beacon of light in La Crosse, WI. It's a medium sized co-op off of King and 5th, with…read moreminimal parking to the side of the building, but extra parking behind the building near the bank. Be careful though, there are signs that designate certain parking spots for bank customers only. On the outside, it's not overly impressive but as always, it's what's on the inside that counts. When you walk in, the fresh produce (local if available, organic and conventional options all abound) is the first thing you see. Nestled inside of the produce department is a generous salad bar, where you can build your own salad from a serious array of veggies, proteins and toppings for about $6 a pound. Not a bad deal if you're on the run or at the store and don't feel like cooking tonight! There's also an aisle solely dedicated to bulk foods, and their selection is completely impressive. Take a stroll down that aisle before settling on anything pre-boxed or pre-bagged. Make sure you take one of their provided stickers and write the PLU (provided on the dispensing canisters) on the bag for the person at the check out! They've got your standard fare (cereals, canned items, household cleaning items), but with an eye to what's organic, local, environmentally friendly etc. Their meat and dairy department is amazing, and you can pick up farm fresh eggs that are locally grown and harvested for just under $4 a dozen. I purchased some ground beef that was locally raised and grass fed, and it was exceptional. There's a fantastic deli department with pre-made items, a bakery that can definitely get you in trouble, and a wine and beer aisle with a cold side if you're in a hurry. There's even a section for essential oils and charcoal soaps and things of that nature. The best part is, you don't need to be a member to shop here. Membership is encouraged at about $100 or so a year, and you get special savings that way. I recommend the co-op to everyone I come across!
