    Blue and white china!

We were walking down the street in Sitka and saw those Russian hats that are huge and fun? We went in to try one on jokingly and ended up spending a fortune here. They have exquisite Russian porcelain which was blue and white and gorgeous. I started out with one tea cup and saucer. By the time I was done (two visits) I had purchased 4 teacups and saucers, 4 dessert plates, a tea pot and a cookie plate. They shipped it all home and it arrived the same day I did. It looks magnificent on my buffet. I love it but the price, well, you have to pay for quality!

Large store with a variety of things you could buy. Just coming in and looking at some of the historical pieces they have is worth going in.

My husband (who hates gift shops) ended up purchasing a beautiful handmade knife--made by an Alaskan, not from China.

We only had a few minutes to quickly look at the inside before he closed the church. It was a shame because we would have liked more time to spend seeing this iconic Russian Orthodox Church. You can admire the church unique architecture for free from the outside, but there is a fee to see the inside. What is interesting is that before Alaska became the 49th of the United States, it was colonized by Russia. The original church, designed by Bishop Innocent himself, was built between 1844 and 1848 out of spruce timber and sailcloth for insulation. As it was the first on the continent, St. Michael's was the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of North America. It was the largest building in Alaska at that time. Liturgies are predominantly in English, but hymns are sung in Tlingit; Aleut; Yupik; and Slavonic, the language of Russian Orthodox services, as well. Sadly, the original building caught fire in 1966 and burnt to the ground. The townspeople collected what artifacts they could of the demolished church, including precious icons. These were put on display in the new St. Michael's, an exact replica of the original with some modern updates. The walls of St. Michael's are still lined with sailcloth in memory of both the original church and those who have lost their lives at sea.

People will tell you to bring an umbrella to Alaska. No, you should really just bring a really good waterproof hoody coat. It was bulky, but it protected me from the elements. It's just too windy for an umbrella. Anyway, I thought about trying the spruce tip latte. I ended up getting a Dirty Chai. It was very good. I didn't get to try my husband's Mexi-Mocha with cayenne pepper. He really liked the flavors. He's never had a spicy latte, so it was a real treat for him. The shop has some moose chocolate treats, gifts, flowers, and unique gift items. It was my first time seeing Alaskan sea otter fur earrings. An Alaska native artist makes them. The flowers that they sell here look fresh and beautiful. It's very close to the public library and Harrigan Centennial Hall. It was the perfect stop before getting on the bus back to the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal. It's also a great stopping point after visiting the Baranof Castle State Historic Site on a cold day. Check it out if you're in Sitka.
