We only had a few minutes to quickly look at the inside before he closed the church. It was a shame because we would have liked more time to spend seeing this iconic Russian Orthodox Church. You can admire the church unique architecture for free from the outside, but there is a fee to see the inside. What is interesting is that before Alaska became the 49th of the United States, it was colonized by Russia. The original church, designed by Bishop Innocent himself, was built between 1844 and 1848 out of spruce timber and sailcloth for insulation. As it was the first on the continent, St. Michael's was the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of North America. It was the largest building in Alaska at that time. Liturgies are predominantly in English, but hymns are sung in Tlingit; Aleut; Yupik; and Slavonic, the language of Russian Orthodox services, as well. Sadly, the original building caught fire in 1966 and burnt to the ground. The townspeople collected what artifacts they could of the demolished church, including precious icons. These were put on display in the new St. Michael's, an exact replica of the original with some modern updates. The walls of St. Michael's are still lined with sailcloth in memory of both the original church and those who have lost their lives at sea.

I enjoyed the exceptionally friendly service and the helpful staff. Seems like everyone working there was indeed happy to be there. The one constructive piece of criticism I would give would be in reference to the fitting rooms. The doors are saloon style, don't really close securely and are right off the main store floor. So, there really isn't a sense of privacy, and I felt like anyone shopping who might happen to look in just the right direction might actually be able to see me in the changing room if they wanted. Other than that, it's a great little shop with a large variety of unique and local clothing and wares. I highly recommend stopping in and giving them all your time and money.

The shop is relatively small but has a fairly…read morelarge selection of different types of artwork where the bronze statues and their intricate designs and beautiful finishes caught my eye. These pieces are developed using a mold where the bronze is then cast around it. The finishes which come across as marble in appearance once done are achieved via a secondary operation using an etching process. Finished product is absolutely beautiful and will provide a lifetime of enjoyment where these limited production pieces of work offer the buyer/collector the satisfaction in knowing very few pieces like this exist in the world! If you are a fan of fine artwork, then this is a business not to be missed.
