The instructors make an effort to connect with you on a personal level and I have become close to many of them. They really care about technique here and, as I have visited other studios, I have noticed that DMA does a really spectacular job. Not only this, but they are really well-rounded. You can get a quality education in ballet, jazz, modern, musical theater, tap, and hip hop with teachers that are great in their field. They are home to even some professionally-affiliated companies like the Chicago Repertory Ballet Youth Ensemble which I was a part of for 2 years, and the Trifecta Youth Ensemble which I have been a part of for a while. No matter what style you're interested in, they have something for you. They have a musical theater program that brings in agents and gives help with self taps from working actors, they have a ballet conservatory, they have hip hop companies, a tap company, jazz company, and a modern company, as well as a mini Glenbrook South poms "prep" company and an Edgebrook All-Stars poms "prep" company. If you just want to take classes with no companies, they have that, too. Don't be fooled, just because they have many different styles doesn't mean they are lesser quality, because DMA puts care into every style they have. As a mainly ballet-lover, I am able to do a variation (dance) en pointe as well as be in the modern company. It's great because even though I did not like ballet as a kid, I grew to love it in the classes I took and was able to decide to take more of them because of the opportunities here. I was even able to go to the YAGP National FInals in Tampa because of the fantastic ballet company. Needless to say, please consider DMA. I am close to being a senior in high school and will cherish the time I had here. I really feel well-prepared as a dancer and a person because of my time here. They really instill in you that a dancer is worth more than their body, the titles they won, or what style they do. To us, dance is an art form and a sport. I have loved it here and feel like a part of a family. Please consider coming here! (also I know there are some negative reviews from a while ago but the place has come under new management)

The newest offering is a yoga/Pilates class for adults. My daughter has taken lessons here for 4 years, and all her instructors have impressed me with their professionalism and ability to work with younger kids. (I like them all, but here's my tip: go with Pat Doyle if you can. She is simply wonderful; my daughter took her storybook theater class last summer and loved her!). The facility has four spacious dance studios with sprung-wood floors. Weekends are always the craziest times; the narrow hallways are forever congested. The changing room is chaotic and too small to contain all the students; I try to avoid it. In the past year, McDonald Dance opened a small dancewear boutique, which is handy if you need leotards, tights, hair accessories and the like. The tuition for a 17-week semester (once a week classes) ranges from $130-$235. The end of the year culminates in a school-wide recital performance, at Barrington High School, in May. There are a number of dance camps and classes offered for summer.

Then the realization hit that we would be stuck at home for weeks (maybe even months...fingers crossed not the case) local businesses got creative. Since then I've been a bit overwhelmed with my kids virtual schedules and would do anything to drop off one of my kids somewhere...and even drive a carpool. Some virtual classes have been better than others. Yesterday we had a music teacher (not at Rootz) send out the wrong zoom passcode and teach the entire class without realizing any kids were on there. But today we had my one of son's favorite classes, Super Hero Boot Camp, here at Rootz take place on zoom and it was the best virtual class I saw yet. Mr. David was well prepared by sending us parents some worksheets (scavenger hunt and coloring page) ahead of time. He had a fun superhero background on zoom and engaged the kids for 40 minutes with super hero activities. Since they are so young it did require a parent to be present and think my husband had so much fun that I may have to sign him up for the class in the future. Are 43 year olds allowed? My son did get distracted a few times, which probably also happens in class, but overall he had so much fun. While he wishes he could see all his fellow superheroes in person, this is a great plan b.

Yet she was denied that chance, regularly, twice per week for over six months while I sent her to this terrible place, patiently waiting for this unacceptable pattern of "seclusion" to change. I was told my daughter was "new", that she could not yet participate fully in the upcoming recital that is why she was kept in the back... Not just in the back row dancing. She was either sitting biting her nails or told to move over and just stood there!!! Yet this whole time, they happily took our tuition money which was exactly the same as any of the other girls' who were actually dancing. But money is the LEAST important of all of this. My heart breaks when I think about how long I let this borderline abusive pattern of seclusion continue right under my nose... yet my husband and I were repeatedly told that she was late to start and that things would change after the summer recital... Well, six months later, the "recital" came and went (needless to say, my daughter was not even invited to watch the performance, let alone be a part of it - and quite frankly I would have never taken her to watch all the other girls dance while she was left out). But the final straw came when I saw tears in my little girls eyes once before going to class because all she ever heard from this self-proclaimed ballet "teacher" was "no". When I asked her if she didn't like dancing anymore, she said "no, I love it, but the teacher always tells me I can't". It is one thing to be strict, firm and focused on teaching. It is another to take a child's passion and willingness to learn and stick them in the back threatening their confidence and innate love for dance. SHAME ON YOU "Academy of Ballet & Arts"!!! Your diplomas hanging on the wall and your letters of achievement from Juilliard are good for nothing if you discourage even but one child from wanting to learn... and that you DID. My heart aches that I let my daughter endure this kind of unacceptable treatment from an adult "instructor" for so long. PARENTS STAY AWAY!!!

The quaint theater doesn't really have a "bad" seat in the house! They have programming that spans improv, musicals, classic plays, children's theatre, educational concerts, a capella, etc. They also have a performing arts school in which my daughter has taken classes and summer camps at. One star off because I wish they would do more accessible tickets e.g. rush tickets or lotteries. One of shows of the children from the school of the performing arts was, like, $20/person. Also, the Play that Goes Wrong was $50. I can see a Broadway in Chicago show for that price if you go about it utilizing the proper channels. I do not utilize the bar during shows, but they sell snacks, which are not allowed in the theater, and drinks, which are allowed in the theater.

A couple days ago we went for our first official class, Tutu Toddlers. I think my newly-minted two year old really had a lot of fun. She was shy at first--for like three minutes--then got a lot more involved. She's still learning to listen to instructions so she and some of the other kids on the young end of 2 were kinda doing their own thing for some of the time, but she followed along for more than I expected. They use several props in the class for fun and to help small children with movement and expression. My daughter wasn't super fond of giving up the props each time but thankfully the curriculum is well designed to keep them active and moving to the next segment of class and it was quite quickly forgotten. They played with wands, ribbons, and marched with teddy bears. There was story time, with dance interspersed that aligned with the story. There were bubbles, which is a favorite of about every child this age that I know, and even a time for coloring at the end. The space is beautiful. For this age range the parents are expected to be on the dance floor with their children, but for older ages that are more independent there's a lot of seating for parents to hang out. I'm excited we joined Tutu School. They have a couple of the Tutu Toddler classes and may continue adding more options as they grow. The staff we've met, as well as the owner, have been very friendly. Their expertise and good spirits are great for this kind of work and I love getting to see my babe play and dance and learn. #2200 - July 22, 2025
