Unethical.represented that they take insurance, does a multi hour intake, and then tries to trick you into signing agreements for thousands of dollars. I saw Dr Berlow from 2012-2014 and then ~2016-2017. My insurance doesn't cover him anymore and I don't live in the area, but that was my only reason for leaving him as a Dr, I otherwise would've stuck around. He's a great psychiatrist, and does a good job at separating what might be psychiatric vs somatic issues or just "bad life syndrome." He goes out of his way to help you try new and experimental treatments or trials that show promise when other options might not be as safe or don't work as well for your case. He was one of the first drs in California (that I know of, but 10y later this still seems to be true) to offer TMS and other TENS unit/TENS unit like non-medication treatments the second they started showing promise, and ditto for psychadelic research 10y ago (fuzzy on the details it's been so long, but he helped me get in one of the earlier PTSD/psychadelic studies when nothing else worked - it worked, now just to patiently wait for things to be legalized). Worth mentioning for the quality of care even though I know my case is rare, bizarre, and atypical: in round 1 of seeing him I had started getting hit by the first symptoms of a rare stomach disease that most other medical pros were ready to dismiss as an eating disorder/bulimia, despite that not fitting at all. Dr Berlow thank god didn't zero in on that like they did and even though I wouldn't figure out what it was for years, took the stomach problems into account for other treatment and symptoms. When I next saw him, I filled him in on how "oh by the way, since I last saw you I figured out that stomach problem - it's gastroparesis" and it was a eureka moment for both of us, and turns out a lot of patients with this are sent off to psychiatry when it's not psychiatric, to the point that he was more up to date on treatment and tricks for that than any GI dr I saw. I can't speak on insurance since it's been so long, but round 2 of seeing him I don't think my insurance covered him, but I didn't have issues (usually) with the superbill I had to get and then send off to insurance. I was in a situation where I needed to see a psychiatrist for a medication rx'd by my cardiologist because of how laws were back then and all other psychiatrists had a 6+ month long waitlist. read more

Dude got me out of a 6-year-long recurrent depression due to chronic health conditions! Dr B is not your average doctor. And I know doctors (6 years, 5 chronic health conditions, 3 which directly contribute to depression). But that's what's great about him. Most doctors will not perform a battery of psychological tests before starting treatment. Most doctors will not try TMS and other cutting-edge NON-PHARMA treatments before busting out the prescription pad. Most doctors will reduce you to a diagnosis and forget to see the person behind it. It has been many years since I saw Dr. Rustin Berlow, but he was extremely kind to me and helped me very much. I had depression for most of my life, but especially since I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 1997. I also was allergic to just about every anti-depressant or mood stabilizer there was. Dr. Berlow had me do TMS for almost a year, along with electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve on the earlobe. At the time that I had the treatments, I was not noticing any change. But over the course of a few months later, I did notice a huge difference in my depression. It was lifted in a major way. I was never able to tell Dr. Berlow or did not remember to tell him. Ultimately my experience with Dr. Berlow was painful and his behavior unprofessional. (I never thought I would write that, but that is how things turned out.) Dr. Berlow missed clues in my diagnosis. He never actually took my full history. Some of the medications Dr. Berlow prescribed for me exacerbated aspects of my condition. I was quite upset when I found that out. The most disappointing and painful situation was when Dr. Berlow terminated our therapeutic relationship in an unprofessional manner. True, I had started to look for a new psychiatrist (because I wasn't getting better) but I was not ready to transition yet, and he terminated me in one session. Dr. Berlow terminated me with no plan for the future (except the possibility of seeing a psychiatrist I had received a second opinion from but I wasn't sure I wanted to be my doctor) and no tapering to a new psychiatrist. It was particularly painful because I have deep rooted and extensive abandonment issues and Dr. Berlow was well aware of my issues. Furthermore, Dr. Berlow is resistant to patients getting a second option. You must notify him before seeing another psychiatrist or Dr. Berlow can terminate you. You agreed to that in the paperwork you signed at your first appointment. I feel Dr. Berlow's shortcomings outweigh his strengths. He is very intelligent, compassionate and empathetic. But I need a doctor I can trust and count on to be there for me in the long run. read more

My aunt had a mental breakdown from severe suicidal depression and was admitted into one of those state ran hospitals (against our wishes). It was a nightmare. We tried putting her in other "nicer" places, but the same problem arose, they wanted to heavily drug her into sedation and basically milk from her great insurance. After struggling with some painful and intense emotions for several months, I was seeking a psychiatrist to help me navigate this time. I called Dr. Berlow's office and he called me right back and said he could see me immediately. I drove the 30 miles to his office....and waited for almost 2 hours in a small waiting room filled with other people. I filled out a very long intake questionnaire. When it was my turn to be seen, the appt felt very rushed. The whole intake appt was 25 minutes and cost over $500. He barely looked at my intake forms. I saw him one other time despite my reservations. He was less rushed at that visit but the appt. was less than 10 minutes long. I appreciated his compassion at the second visit, but I didn't feel very " heard" at either appointment and ultimately sought care elsewhere. My wife Diane has Parkinson"s Disease. Not good at all. The doctor wrote me prescriptions for medication for mental illness and took my money on several occasions and then would not follow up with additional consultation I requested.
