Won a pet photo session via a Facebook contest, which includes waiver of the sitting fee and a $500 credit towards prints/purchases. Entire team was lovely to work with for scheduling and ensuring the comfort and safety of my pup from start to finish - the pet studio area isn't currently air conditioned so we rescheduled on short notice for a morning time to ensure my pup would be cool, comfortable and not too warm to strike a pose! Kate got some wonderful captures of my sweet Berner and a few with me as well, and I ended up springing for a few additional prints and copies of the digital files for future use. I never felt pressured to spend outside of my budget. Prep instructions/recommendations are accurate and helpful! Responding to a few things other reviewers have taken issue with: YES - fine art photos are EXPENSIVE. Ruth & Kate are up front on how much they recommend budgeting for larger pieces (thousand and up), the $500 credit will get you a lovely 8x10 print in a fine art style, additional 8x10s avail for $250/per. This includes the time and expertise of the staff to schedule you, answer questions, studio rent and furnishings, knowing the light and focus settings to get a lovely capture of a mostly black dog (easier said than done!) and masterfully editing photos to take out dog eye boogers and human zits while keeping both of you looking real instead of AI generated. I've got approximately 5 bajillion photos of my dog on my phone - but the captures I got from Ruth and Kate ARE distinctly unique and will always be precious to me because of this. YES - large scale prints on canvas and archival quality papers with archival quality inks are EXPENSIVE. Prices for larger prints/canvas/books are in line with most other fine art photographers and print houses like mpix, etc. If you've never shopped for these items vs more entry-level photo packages from department stores or school portraits, yeah, you're probably going to have some sticker shock. If you have a budget or can't afford to spend more than than the purchase credit - JUST SAY SO! No need to get salty with the business or feel guilty/project anger because of budget limitations. read more

Listen to the other reviews and do not book. I was optimistic that this business was better than the reviews led on, but boy was I wrong. I was invited to the experience, and booked very soon after my questions were answered (3/4/2025). MY APPT WAS FOR (3/15/2025). We had a tragedy in the family, resulting in needing to cancel. I couldn't rebook because I wasn't sure how long we'd be out of town. I tried calling to cancel, and no answer, so I texted the number that originally texted me. I canceled my appointment, (3/11/2025) and was informed another reservation fee would be needed to rebook. I asked if my original reservation fee was going to be refunded. They said no and argued with me even though NO WHERE DOES IT STATE the $25 is non refundable. I'm sure they're just making money this way. They finally agreed to a refund, but I had to argue. Ruth and Kate, if you're reading this, I urge you to change the wording in your paperwork, or argue way less via text message over a policy you do not have in place. Also Tiffany, guilt tripping a customer for not being able to just let $25 vanish into thin air is NOT a good look. I understand you're a small business, but a family that was willing to pay for your services deserves more respect than you believe you were to me. Lastly, the incorrect grammar, poor sentence structures, made reading your texts harder to read than your policies, I'm sure they'll respond to this and have something to say just because that's the type of small business this is. They asked me to write a review, so here it is: imagine a timeshare presentation but for "portraits," ending with overpriced vinyl prints that look like a whack AI filter as a selling point. High-pressure sales, zero transparency, and the final product isn't worth hanging--unless you enjoy daily memories ... of getting hustled. We've traveled the world and taken thousands of incredible photos, on legitimate camera, with real memories--yet the one we've got a print of doesn't even look like us (or our dog). Out of the 15 shots they gave us, one barely passed as decent, and that's the one we now "own" for $600+ (after "saving" $1,000 ). No frame, no way to hang it (without spending more) , just a picture glued to a piece of vinyl. Honestly, if you have literally have zero photos of your family, either hire a legitimate photographer and go somewhere cool, or just go to Penny's if you like a boring black background, both will cost less and be a better memory than this. I was given the opportunity to take both my grandchildren to this establishment for a Photoshoot. Those that know me know I love to research. So, in like manner, I came to help as part of my research and found sooooooo many negative reviews. People felt as though they were scammed, lied to, and even disrespected. Now, I'm not sure who they saw. But from the greeting for Hanna, their fairy godmother, to the precious young lady that showed the prints and explained the process and the prices, this was a professional, respectful, and fascinating adventure for both my grandchildren, my daughter and myself. From the moment they saw their name on the marquee, to the poses, to the last adventure in the play room while the adults conversed about selections and memories, this experience will probably be a core memory for my littles. Now, this is a FINE ARTS photography studio. This is not the average JCPenny's or Sears studio photography experience. So yes, it's going to cost. And if you are fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to take your kids here and give them this opportunity to be royally or a fairy for a day...take it. We have been going to Ruth and Kate with my son for almost 10 years (!!) for everything from Santa pictures to multiple visits to capture memories with any number of themes and sets they had available throughout the years. These portraits have become absolute treasures in our home. Personal favorite is from a set I'm not sure they do anymore (Gone fishing) -- captured my young man when he was missing both front teeth -- ADORABLE!!! These ladies have the ability to capture the magic of childhood in a way that many attempt, but few achieve. Their prices are higher than what you'd expect to pay for a neighborhood "hobby photographer" you find on IG, but you absolutely get what you pay for. From the lighting to the props to the final touches in editing before you get your finished product, they are simply the best at what they do. If you have the ability to book these ladies, I highly recommend them -- as my little guy gets older, the less he enjoys having his photo taken, but he still looks forward to photo shoots with Ruth and Kate and enjoys the resulting portraits. I went to Ruth & Kate's studio in the guise of winning a contest. After my encounter with Ruth, it slowly dawned on me that this was not something I had won but a ploy to get people in their studio to unwittingly spend $2500. I entered a "contest" on FB for a fairy photo shoot and a few days later I received an email congratulating me for winning their contest. Which included their sitting fee and a 8x10 photo. I thought it was bizarre that they didn't announce that I had won on their FB page, but it all makes sense now as that is probably how they got so many people in their studio in the first place. They have people enter a "contest" by giving them their email. They can then email them that they've won a photo shoot and then bombard, guilt and pressure them into buying overpriced photos of their children. I arrived with my three children in tow by myself because my husband was deployed with the intention of just my daughter having pictures done. Ruth and Kate saw my two boys and insisted that they be a part of the shoot. My oldest was a bit reluctant, but when he saw the forest animal props he decided he'd give it a try. They had a little bunny that he wanted to hold for a photo. The photo shoot went as well as expected with three children under the age of seven, one being 14 months old and teething. My issue was not with the photographer, as Kate was patient and sweet with my children. Kate is talented and takes wonderful photos. My issue is with Ruth and the way she does business. I've been to photographers that do not disclose their prices on a website. I've had to meet in person with a photographer to go over pricing and different packages. This helps a photographer to know that you are invested in your photos and not wasting their time, which is perfectly reasonable. I've spent anywhere from $100-1300 on photos of my children. I do not skimp when it comes to good photography. I was blindsided when I was told that a photo box with 7 pictures and a small canvas with three pictures would cost me $2,300. I told Ruth I would not spend that kind of money on a few photos. This price didn't include digital images either. She then asked me what I thought I would be spending. I told her that I honestly didn't have a clue as her website doesn't provide pricing. She insisted that they were high-quality boutique photographers and their products were also of high quality. There is no question that the photos they create are beautiful. The images and special effects make amazing photographs, but I felt like I was tricked. Had I known prior to the shoot that I would have to spend $800 to get just one picture (no digital image included)? I spent $150 on the digital image that I chose for the 8x10 and a print release. I would not have driven an hour and I certainly would not have bothered getting my boys dressed up in the costumes they provided. If you want to spend $2300 on 7 photographs, that's your business. To each their own. But a business owner should never try to guilt, shame or use children to get a customer to purchase something. Even after I told Ruth I was not willing to spend that amount of money, she continued on about what that was the average their clients spent on photographs. I wasn't sure if that comment was to try and justify the price or make me feel bad for not being the "average" client. The icing on the cake for me was when I had painstakingly settled on a picture of my daughter for the 8x10 and Ruth made a comment about my son, wondering where the picture of him and the bunny went. I thought that was tacky and low for someone who claims to run a high-end photography business. I've never encountered a photographer who tried to pressure a client into buying photos. The whole experience was tainted by her remarks and shameless sales tactics. I felt like I was tricked into their studio for spending an absurd amount of money on overly edited photographs. Anyone with a camera, props and a good editing program can do what they do. The rest is all smoke, mirrors and the appearance of opulence. The way they whisk you away from your children to view photographs and purchase them immediately after the shoot is something I have never experienced before in my life. It is basically a pressure sales tactic where they put you on the spot where most people aren't given the chance to go home, look over photos and really think about whether they can spare a few thousand dollars for a few photos. We aren't talking wedding photos or newborn photos. These are highly edited photos of children in costumes. I have had photos emailed to me to look over, and I have even gone back into the studio to look over actual prints. Itold her i need to ask husband about cost. I was uncomfortable and hesitating. she said its like groceries- do u have to ask husband every time u buy something? He trusts u " I wasn't allowed to think about it later because the deal "goes away" . Yeah she wanted to have me pay like 2-6k. She was like a car salesman and I was tired . And my daughter was excited to get pictures. The photos turned out cute, but they're tiny and unframed. Worth 300$ max paid $800 . Likely an 500$ up charge. There is no logical basis where they could be should be the prices they say. They quoted some "deals" at $6000. They treat you like you're getting a deal, but you're just getting fake numbers from the start. If it could've been like a Bibbidi boppiti it experience like from disney - you knew it was over priced and you wanted to spoil your daughter I would have no problem paying a bit extra. it's that I was tricked and scammed into it. That makes me feel like dirt. They need to rethink/ redo their misleading marketing, crazy sketchy sales tactics preying on moms. Their photography should sell itself but unfortunately they do it in a bad way. A lot of people probably won't look on here for because they think they won something. But even if I save one mom from going in, I will. Just take your kid to the zoo or have a special day in some sort other way, but I don't think you should be excepting these business practices. Ruth and Kate portraits did an amazing job making this experience so magical. The kids were treated like royalty right when we walked through the doors. They were assigned their own personal fairygodmother who stayed in character the whole time and made both the kids feel so confident and comfortable, which in turn made their little personalities come through in the photos. The photos are beautiful and came put even better than I could have expected. The pricing with Ruth and kate portraits is quite high and NOT for everybody. Trust me, don't go in expecting not to fall in love with your photos. On average I would say most families will spend $1000 or more. My daughters won this awesome fairytale experience with Ruth and Kate photography recently, valued at $1000. Excited, I selected 9 photos, only to be shocked when they quoted $24,000 for three framed photos and digital copies of the rest Unfortunately, I wasn't spending that kind of money on some cute pictures of my girls so I used my voucher on $500 towards the shoot and $500 went to ONE. 8x10 photo. (What a joke) It's disheartening to see them take advantage of people like this. While the experience was enjoyable, the exorbitant prices are unjustifiable. This review is a year in the making. We had won a $1000 contest which included session fee and one 8x10 photo. (Spoiler, it didn't) Apparently, Ruth and Kate like to give a lot of these out to draw people in. (Check out other Yelp reviews). Let's start with the good. We went and the experience was amazing for our two daughters. They had created a really magical experience and the photographer was great. The photos they took were absolutely top notch. Now here is where it gets bad, really bad. After the photos my fiance was feeling really ill (she was actually diagnosed with MS shortly after this) and we wanted to leave. They would not let us, the pressure was insane. We were taken into the bosses lair where she really tried to make us feel like bad parents by asking us awkwardly phrased questions, like along the lines of, "Tell me, if money were not an option, don't you want something that lasts for ever and for your kids to remember?" At the time we were actually financially struggling and I was very upfront with that as soon as we got there. But as soon as we got to the bosses lair and even after reiterating she kept trying to up charge us on things that costed thousands of dollars, well beyond what we could afford. It felt like there was no way out without spending money, the pressure was intense. This was even with my partner on her couch, feeling extremely sick. We had to take her to the ER immediately after this ordeal. So we ended up buying a package for about a $1000 and no, the contest money did not cover anything! That had to come out of my own pocket. They said no one ever takes the entire time to pay. Well, that is a lie if they ever say that to you now. We did not pay early because we couldn't. I waited until we received the photos before posting this. The quality is actually disappointing... some of the photos are blurry, BLURRY. The photo editing job is embarrassingly bad. Attaching a photo of that. After paying what I paid... I feel so beyond disappointed. It was an absolute struggle. Horrible people, go somewhere, anywhere else. The contest is a scam to upcharge you and they will not let you leave!!! The photo quality is bad, the photos editing job is bad, AVOID at all costs. read more

SCAM. Would give zero stars if possible. I was very excited to be a chosen winner of a giveaway I saw in an Instagram ad, which was advertised as a free pet photoshoot and artwork. During the consultation call, I was told I needed to pay a $50 nonrefundable deposit and I'd be paying for any of the pictures from the shoot. Other reviews site ridiculously high pricing for the final photos. The "giveaway" is a digitized painted version of one of the pictures (which can be made in several free apps, btw). They also don't have really any Pet portraits on their site, which leads me to believe they're going to use the pictures from "giveaway" pet shoots as marketing material. So basically, I'm paying YOU so I can drive to Renton, be a model, and help you build a portfolio and market to other unknowing pet owners? And then I get to spend another $10k on the pictures we take? No thanks. read more

I rarely write reviews, but I had to write this one. As a 'winner,' you should be more upfront about the prices. If I had known about the prices up front for even the small print, I would never have considered going through the experiences and setting my kid's hopes up. You are not a winner if you must pay thousands of dollars for the prints. My fault was that I got caught on the emotional side since I never won anything, and this was an experience that I would never dream I could afford for my kids. I understand the value of people's time, but when asked about the cost before going in, during the photo session, and at the beginning of Zoom session - your staff kept holding off and telling me that it would be discussed later. I should have walked away, but I keep telling myself it could not be that much in prices for print since I still have $500 in credit toward the print. Part of me was at fault for believing something too good to be true. Yes, I should have walked away because I still have a choice. Sadly, I was just too far in to walk away. When I look at my prints, I don't look at them as joy and excitement. I just felt cheated and scammed. I am trying to wash the adverse feelings away and tell myself it was a lesson I should learn from. If someone can't directly give you the cost. Hang up the phone; you are not a winner. read more

Great experience.. Very fancy and nice artwork. But the pricing is absolutely insane. Which is exactly what I told her when she asked me what I thought about 10k for two of the options I picked. (they won't tell you the price of everything until they have you pick your fav from a storybook, wall portrait, etc.) they asked her what the cost was she said to not worry about the cost for now and it just imagine what I see my daughter like for the next whatever years on my wall and at the end of it all she told me that it All costs $14,000. That's what I paid for my car is what I told her... There is no photos ever anywhere that are worth $14,000. End of story. And I wasn't trying to spend any money at all since I don't have any money to spend and they make you put a $165 deposit just to keep your appointment and they advertise Will only let you reschedule once otherwise you lose your appointment and deposit, and if you are more than 10 minutes late you lose your deposit as well. I felt so very pressured to buy something the whole time and I couldn't afford even the cheapest option. ($4000) I just came for the giveaway picture for my daughter and the experience to make her happy and feel special. not to have my bank accounts run dry. They do have financing have if you were well to do with money and have good credit, but if you are not then just be aware what you're getting into. They are pretty good at sales. Either way my daughter still had a good time and the fairy godmother was very lovely to her and very good with children. And while they're telling you this insane price for the pictures the fairy godmother and your child are in a different room with a baby monitor so that she doesn't have to see you break down and cry when you realize you can't even afford any products available. Don't worry they do provide tissues for that. They also have a nice snack tray that you get to take home. Also you can't take pictures while getting ready or anything so be prepared for that. Overall it's a nice experience but I'm pretty sure they make their money off of these giveaways and trying to swindle these winners out of the money. I don't think they're very much people that would be willing to pay $14,000 for a couple of photos and a storybook. I could have the photos printed pay maybe no more than $200 and then make a book out of them myself. I'm still sitting here in disbelief at that cost. Literally bought my car at that price. This fall (2024) my husband and I took our two doggos, Jemma and Jewel, into Ruth & Kate Portraits for a photography session. This was to be a special celebration of their lives because one is on chemotherapy and the other has heart disease. In spite of their illnesses, they are still the happiest little souls, and so filled with life and love. The experience was nothing but a pleasure. Prior to the session, we had a thorough get-to-know-you meeting with lots of questions about our expectations and what we hoped to see captured in these keepsake photos. The session itself was fun and upbeat. Both of our little furries have short attention spans and are very wiggly. In spite of that, the photos captured were amazing. Our remaining time with these babies may be limited but these beautiful photos will keep them alive forever. I don't remember when i won or how i won but they gave me a call and said i won "$1000" contest which included session fee and one 8x10 photo. They advertised this as not being rushed . But the pictures they took was all of 7 mins Max. Photographer sat in chair the entire time and just clicked away. The photos were just ok . I explained to Ruth that no one even tried to get my babies attention. All pics are of her with her mouth open, looking away. Not one time did the photographer try to get my baby to smile or anything . I like others walked away feeling scammed. And as soon as i got in my car i wanted to cancel but i signed a form stating i can not. I kept saying I'm ok with just the winning portrait but Ruth had her sales pitch down. She kept saying you're only paying $55 i said no that's $250 for one photo due to the $200 booking fee they held when you booked. She had the nerve to say well that moneys gone. When in reality I put that on my credit card and I'm still paying on it! She didn't seem very friendly just very sales pitchy . You don't get to see the edited final photo so just hoping for the best. I will continue to book local artist and get a while edited gallery for a decent price instead of one photo for $250! Some positives the studio is beautiful! And the 2 younger (kids) helpers were so sweet and kind. read more

This studio is a big rip off. They entice you with fake contests for a "free sitting" which they claim is worth $500, and they tell you you win an 8x10 photo worth $500. When you book you have to put down an additional $200 deposit. If you cancel you relinquish that deposit. They only sell large framed prints. You spend thousands for just one large framed print. The photographer when we went looked like she was barely out of high school and not a highly trained photographer with years of experience. The owner was communicating with her through an ear piece during the photo shoot which was very sketchy. That made me uncomfortable. What was the most upsetting is that they specialize in children's portraits and none of the staff were masked. My child is not old enough to be vaccinated. After the shoot the parent is separated from the child. They had my child in a room with a television while they took me by myself to look at the photos in a darkened office with the owner, Ruth. She didn't ask my permission, but she told me the conversation would be recorded. So bizarre! I was very uncomfortable. They pay your child lots of compliments to butter you up and have their sales pitch down. It's all a bunch of baloney. You can go to other local photo studios, Yuen Lui for instance, and have fairy photos for a small fraction of the price. This studio couldn't even show you the actual photos with the photo enhancements in advance (lit candles, fairy lights, etc.). You don't get to see the finished product until the photos arrive four to six weeks later. Yuen Lui shows you what the photos will look like before you purchase right after the shoot. The worst part for me was finding out afterwards that my child was sitting in that enclosed t.v. room with their unmasked assistant. The Delta variant is raging and they didn't even have the decency to encourage their staff to mask up. They wouldn't allow my child in the room with me and said it wasn't allowed, but then I couldn't monitor my child and she was in an enclosed room with a stranger. I felt absolutely sick after going to this place. I hated myself for even making the appointment. And it disappoints me that this female owned business is such a scam. Go to Yuen Lui if you want beautiful fairy photos for a fraction of the price. A few hundred versus THOUSANDS of dollars. read more

Got my daughter and wife to go by us winning a free $500 photo shoot and a $500 8x10. Photo shoot was about 15-20 minutes at which time they took my wife into a separate room while our daughter watched a movie. My wife spent time selecting photos while they presented her with the options and then came the price.. a whopping ~ $7,000 for the package (and it's discounted). WHAT!!?? Next, after some elimination it was still $2,000 for a photo book and a small Canvas. Hell No! This was approximately 4x the amount we spent at Yen Liu for this similar type of photo shoot 4 years ago. In my personal opinion, I cannot recommend this place and buyer beware. It felt like to us a high pressured sales experience similar to being sold timeshare. read more

If I could give Ruth & Kate 10stars I absolutely would. They gave my daughter and I a beautiful experience that she will remember forever. My daughter loved every minute of her princess photoshoot and she looked amazing! The studio is wonderful, clean and magical, the dresses are beautiful, and you will definitely feel super special. They are aware of budgets when it comes to choosing your beautiful images I was very impressed with the hole experience. We will do it again for sure! read more

My daughters and I had a lovely experience here. The studio is beautiful. Our fairy godmother was Anna and she was kind and attentive to the girls and made them both feel very special. The outfits she selected for them were so lovely and she styled their hair and made them feel so beautiful. It was a special moment for me to see. The photographer Aria was also super great with my girls and took the time to help coax my little one, who is very shy, out of her shell a bit prior to starting the photo session. Together, Aria and Anna were a great team, helping to pose my girls to get the best photos and to let my older one shine without totally overshadowing her shy little sister. I was very impressed with them. After the photo shoot, I worked with Bre, the Portrait consultant, to select photos for purchase. She was super personable and kind and respectful of my budget. Not high pressure at all, and I walked away feeling good about the experience and excited for my final products to arrive! read more

Appointment only. It was definitely a magical experience and we even went home with a key and a dragon egg!!! I would recommend it but only if you have a small fortune lying around . Other than the price, it was amazing! We were able to watch our toddler on a video screen the whole time (even when picking our photos). They will be great Christmas presents this year!
