Ambiance is great. Classic. We had 4 dogs. 1 gravy & fries. 2 birch beers. Bill was $24.50. I made a mistake and got kraut; should have got chili. The nostalgic Rutt's relish was good. I could not quite place the taste; but it was cold out of the fridge & very nice to complete my 1st experience at this classic Clifton cuisine stop. Service was quick & pleasant. Did I mention the bill was $25. We left $35 because we felt like it. Staff was appreciative. The hot dog itself - unique fried dog - as for flavor... it was different or "plain" if that makes sense; but not bad. Good for sure. It was a different dog than I used to get at Callahan's or Hiram's in Fort Lee years ago ... and I still think one of the best hot dogs is Dover Grille or (if you can believe it) Hoover's bar on Rt. 53 in Morris Plains. A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when combined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. This is a time capsule of a restaurant which frankly I appreciate. Looks and feels like it didn't change from the day they opened. What I didn't appreciate was the sad hotdog I got... I ordered a glizzy with chilli and cheese, I got what looked like the last hotdog left at an abandoned 7/11 post apocalypse, a flat spoon worth of chilli and some melted cheese on top. Haven't been to Rutt's Hut in almost 20 Years. My daughter wanted to try it. She was a little overwhelmed when we entered as the counter was packed, but we got a spot at the middle stand up table. He was satisfied. Went back for bread pudding and said it was really good. I had two rippers with ketchup and fries. Definitely a divey food option but Rutt's does not disappoint! They are cash only and have an ATM on site which is very helpful. We came as we were in the area and my boyfriend was still hungry so a cheap and quick solution was to stop at Rutt's. It was fairly calm and empty when we arrived which made ordering a breeze and our food was ready in less than 5 minutes. As always the fries were crisp and the gravy flavorful. Lived in Jersey all my life & haven't tried Rutt's Hut so we decided to bring the kids for a Saturday late lunch/early dinner. They are the home of the Ripper and have been open since 1928! The famous hot dogs here are deep-fried but they have so much more on the menu - there's something for everyone. They have their own parking lot which is situated right above the Route 3 exit coming off of 21. There are two entrances - one entrance is for pickup orders & the other has a bar/dining area. We were seated in the dining area right away. For drinks we ordered 2 pitchers - birch beer and pepsi. We didnt even bother with apps & ordered hot dogs platters that came with 2 hot dogs, sliced tomato & cucumber, a scoop of cole slaw and 1 scoop of potato salad. We also ordered sides of sauerkraut, chili, cheese and onion rings for the table. The kids wanted something different so we got them the Nagasaki which was essentially steak & shrimp with peppers and onions over rice. Great spot with such simple foods. The menu's huge but we just got the hot dog platter which comes with 2 rippers, slices of cucumbers and tomatoes on a bed of lettuce, 1 large scoop of potato salad a scoop of cole slaw. I must say that, given the reputation of this establishment, I was giddy with anticipation of having the world's best hotdog. They delivered in Spades! First of all, the young lady at the counter (she had the cutest pair of glasses) was as sweet as peach pie. She was welcoming, warm, and rose to the occasion of working at an American iconic establishment. The Rippers were absolutely worth the trip and believe me the trip was not close. I made sure that I visited this place because I was up from North Carolina visiting friends. The Ripper is a deep fried hot dog and they have a relish that is so delicious and the relish recipe is 97 years old. I've heard all about this place and finally got a chance to check it out while in the area. There are two sections - on the left was more of the dining-in area and to the right we more of the to-go area with spots where you can stand to eat your food. We where at the latter -- the place was busy, the staff was efficient and friendly when they took your order, and the area was clean and bright. I really did enjoy the "Ripper" especially with some sauerkraut as well as their french fries and fried clam strips.
