Hot take: the onion rings and burger here are better than the hot dogs. The hot dogs are still delicious - great pop to them and they're pretty big but I thought they were under salted. Finally tried outdoor dining and it was wonderful on a warm spring day. To my chagrin, they discontinued their Birch Beer, but their Root Beer they allowed me to sample was still pretty good! I stopped in recently with my girlfriend as I've been wanting to try this place since I first saw Anthony Bourdain come here and say it was his favorite hot dog. But since I became vegan/vegetarian in 2017 I rarely eat meat unless it's a special place or a rare occasion, but over the past month I loosened up a little and ate some here and there so I made it a point to come here due to this being a special place. It's a cool little spot in a great area. I've always loved Fort Lee. The atmosphere is vibey yet fast faced. You feel a sense of urgency while eating here as everyone is in a rush to eat and go. Which I'm down with. We ordered a dog to share with mustard and sauerkraut on it. F****ck it was good! So good that my girlfriend said, "Let's get another one babe!" I loved that! She also added some relish to this one which made it even better. I've had alot of great hot dogs across the United States and I have to say, this is the best one I've had thus far. I worked in a near by building and my coworkers and I would feast at least twice or three times a week. Only two other guests when we walked in, ordered a couple of dogs, couple of sodas and an order of fries. Less than $20 (cash only!) for all, food came out quickly, piping hot. They had a small bar area, about six tables inside, and plenty of outdoor seating, and fairly ample parking. Staff was great, providing good service. The food has always been good, but what kept bringing me back was also how friendly and welcoming the place usually felt. Today felt different. After picking up our food and sitting outside with my husband, I realized I forgot to grab ketchup and mustard and went back inside. I couldn't immediately find them and was looking around when one staff member asked what I needed. The interaction that followed felt dismissive and uncomfortable. When I politely asked for ketchup and then mustard, the attitude made me feel like I was inconveniencing him for asking something simple. It may seem like a small thing, but customer service matters. Beefy dog in an old school setting! To be honest I limit the number of hot dogs I consume to maybe 3-4 a year. Without knowing what kind of dog I'm consuming and the list of ingredients I generally veer on the side of avoiding entirely. Having heard that Hiram's makes a great dog for a great price though, I had to check it out. This was no frills, just a great beefy dog with a snappy bite, with just the right amount of cheese and chili layered on top. These aren't the thin, overly salty dogs that you get at most Major League Baseball ballparks. The price for this goodness was $4.25 which in 2024, isn't bad at all. The service was friendly but expect to do a little more on your end if you need accompaniments on your dog. Ketchup and Mustard is available for self serve. My dog also came out on a paper plate which was just fine. I took mine outside to the picnic tables and enjoyed my time munching on this masterpiece. Been wanting to check this place out since watching the 3 part series of YouTuber, Mark Weins...Anthony Bourdain's New Jersey Food Trail. Quick Fun Fact: Although the late Anthony Bourdain was born in New York, he grew up and lived in Leonia, NJ during his childhood years. This iconic spot has been regarded as the BEST here in the Garden State. It's a no frills kinda place. This is as old school as it gets. There is outdoor picnic style seating as well. I know I will get a lot of hate comments but I just want to say that I am a hot dog lover. So much so that I can probably have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Miss those dirty water dogs in NYC's pushcarts. EYES EAT FIRST. At first glance, the dogs look bigger than I thought. I am used to skinny ones. Here it goes...I took a snap at the hot dogs and it didn't snap back. How can a frankfurter that is deep fried not have a snap to it? First thing that hits me is how salty it is. Second thing is that it looked and tasted more like chicken instead of beef. What also threw me off is the texture of the chili. It was not as hearty as I would have liked. It was mushy and paste-like. I did like the spicy kick. The one slice of cheese wrapped around the dog is something a kid would do. Just saying. I think they should have melted it. Loved it! Manage your expectations and you will too! If you go here like a hipster food critic with skinny jeans and a botox induced smile, you will not only be disappointed, you may just get thrown out of the place by the people inside (both employees and patrons). This is not a fancy, Michelin starred spot. Instead, it is working class, Americana comfort food to the nth degree. Vegetarians, vegans, and herbivores should not waste their time. And for all of you that protest the venerable hot dog out of health concerns, in my line of work, I see vegetarians die just as often as hot dog eaters. The difference is that the vegetarians seem more unhappy. I figure that you only go around once, so you might as well be happy and I eat their hot dogs for them. I loved that despite its popularity, the folks running this spot make it very easy, inexpensive, and efficient to stop here and feed your face. There is a private parking lot with lots of decently sized spaces and an outside picnic table are along with indoor seats at about 8 tables as well as seats at the bar. Having never been in the place before, I was not sure what the etiquette was or how you order but it is pretty much order at the counter, find a seat, stuff your pie hole, pay in cash (no cards or pay apps here). There are about 20 things on the menu but they really are variations of 5 base ingredients: Meat in tube form, meat in patty form, potatoes in fried french form, onions in ring form, and water in plain beer and soda form. Based on those 4 things, you can get chili or cheese added and there are some condiments on the counter including sauerkraut and red pepper relish that are free for your use if that is your style. I can only vouch for the hot dogs since that was what I had heard about here so that is what I ate. They are unique because they undergo a spa treatment in the deep fryer before they hit the too-small soft white bun and then they hit the deck in front of you on a too-small paper plate. All of that just adds to the greatness here since you dress your food and the stuff falls all over the place when you are eating. Trying to get it to fall on the small plate is a challenging form of entertainment. The hot dogs are really the thing here and those will get 5 stars from me all day long. A consolation prize is due for the chili that I had on one of them as it was perfectly spicy and thin enough to dress the dog with. I really can't recommend that combination enough! There is not a lot of overhead here so their prices are really great. Ridiculously so given what you get. Sure they are not $1.50 Costco prices but the experience of coming here, people watching a good cross-section of normal America taking a break, and watching the happy staff chase the American dream is really priceless. I just visited Hiram's, and I was honestly blown away by both the hot and chili dogs. The regular hot dog was cooked to perfection and had a solid bite to it. We added relish and mustard to our dogs, and I think the relish gave the hot dog a good zang that went really well with the mustard The chili dog was also perfectly cooked and the amount of chili on the dog was just right. I thought the chili would be really heavy but it was surprisingly light and had a pinch of spiciness to it. First: it's CASH ONLY! Okay, now you're ready to go to Hiram's. Hiram's is one of the many great hot dog spots in North Jersey. I'm not going to pick a dog in the fight here and say if it's better than Hot Grill, Rutt's Hut, or the others, because they're all great. Hiram's probably is the most famous outside of New Jersey thanks to Anthony Bourdain, and it does live up to the hype. It's a no frills spot (see: cash only), but that's to your benefit because the prices are great. I had to buy a beer because where else can you get a beer for under $5? Unfortunately, they didn't have anything on tap today, otherwise I would have been able to get a beer for under $3! In New Jersey. In 2024. We also got a birch beer (on tap), which is always delicious. The chili cheese dogs are so good. The piece of cheese melted on the bottom really adds some great flavor. I have a hard time getting anything else when I visit, because these are so great. We also got onion rings (because chili cheese fries would have been a bit excessive) and they were crispy and flavorful. Service was friendly and quick, and very New Jersey. If you're a tourist, it may not be what you're used to and may not seem quite so friendly, but just try not to hold up the line and you'll be fine. We sat outside since it was finally a nice day out and they have lots of great picnic benches out next to the parking lot.
