10/10 -- absolutely outstanding customer service. I walked in unannounced with a brand-new pair of jeans I had just bought online that unfortunately had a ripped seam down the leg. Within seconds, the tailor took them to the back and had them perfectly repaired in under a minute, is it possible this tailor is some sort of wizard. What truly set this experience apart was his generosity. He only accepts cash, which I didn't have on me, and instead of turning me away, he kindly told me not to worry about it and to just come back next time I need anything. I just moved here from California and got last minute tickets to The KC Symphony for the next day. Of course I HAD to wear the outfit that had been in my closet since Dec but needed the pants hemmed. I got up that morning and found this gem located near by in my maps, so I called at 8 :20AM (mind you they don't open till 9) The nicest guy answered the phone and told me to come right over. My pants were done perfectly by 3PM that day! He even took the time and took on four other items I needed done! He sat and chatted with me about the neighborhood and gave me lots of amazing suggestions for different places we must try out here in Kansas City. I came to Rydell Tailor Shop in a bit of a panic as my bridesmaid's dress was too small and the wedding was in one week. A different tailor shop in the area told me it wouldn't be possible, so I felt like I may have been asking for a miracle to make this dress work. I was in several months ago to get a few pairs of jeans hemmed and brought my (very expensive) pair of Frye boots to try them on with. A few days later I realized I had left them behind and planned to call the following Monday when they were open again. Long story short I forgot to call and somehow did not remember until just recently when I was frantically searching my apartment for the boots. When I called and described them the owner seemed immediately defensive. Without skipping a beat, he said, "they've probably been donated but I'll check...." He "checked" then returned to the phone and confirmed they were no longer there (says he takes items left by customers to Goodwill after 30 days). In the event they WERE actually donated (which I have a hard time believing) I want to be very clear-- my problem is not that he gave away my property. I'm responsible for leaving my boots behind and it's my fault I forgot to call for several months. My problem is ZERO attempt was made to contact me. Given the small space and timing of my visit it would have been near impossible not to have known right away who the boots belonged to. I came in near closing and left them in the common area where they would have been easily spotted. I would expect this kind of behavior from a larger business but a mom and pop shop? Really? As the owner of a small/local/neighborhood business who I assume relies heavily on repeat customers in the area I find his decisions extremely puzzling. Needless to say I will not be back and don't recommend Rydell to anyone who values customer service (or their belongings). read more

This is the place if you need something done very well. Yes, there are lower price places and I admit to using them for some things that I am not going to be really picky about. However, if you need something done the best way possible, this is the place. Quality is extremely high as is the level of knowledge regarding what can be done, what should be done and what needs to be done. This is the only place I will take expensive items or things that are going to be difficult to deal with (like when someone gives me something and gets my size completely wrong). I've gone to a few tailors in KC since I've been here, but I'll never go anyplace else after being to Rydell. I stopped by yesterday only to find a "temporarily closed" sign on the door... but it was unlocked, so I went in anyway. I normally wouldn't do that, but I was in a panic over a bridesmaid's dress that was just hanging really awkwardly on me. The handsome gentleman working was not only gracious about me walking in that way, but also talked me down from my freak-out, AND promised to help... overnight. That's right, kittens, I picked up my newly-altered dress TODAY, and it fits beautifully. All he did was move some buttons around, but the thing fits like a glove. Yes, their prices are not cheap, but considering the fact that you can't really wear a piece of clothing that doesn't fit, we can call it a bargain. The quality of the work is what really makes this place shine. With a quick turn around for alterations, the workmanship is nothing less than astonishing. The shop itself is quite pleasant with two rooms, one lined with sewing machines and another for greeting guests. The second is fitted with two spacious and clean changing rooms. If you have a closet full of clothes you don't wear because the jeans you bought at the store fit your hips fine but leave an unflattering gap at your waist (you know exactly the problem I'm talking about!), grab some cash and get them altered. read more

Nice work, close to home, a little pricey. My biggest beef with this place is that they temporarily close the shop to "catch up". Just randomly hang a sign on the door saying "temporarily closed." I have been in a crunch and needed to drop something off/pick something up (the day before I'm to get on a plane!!!!) and they are closed during their regular business hours that are posted on the door. I think it would be more effective to consistantly close the office the same morning or afternoon each week- heck, even a whole day- as long as we can know what day it is and be prepared for it. Customers appreciate consistant service they can count on and unfortunately this place does not deliver. read more

I'm new in town too -and had no idea where to take my 8 year old's jeans to be hemmed. Saw the "closed" sign on the door too - frustrated.... but the lights are on so I knock and a man comes to the store - owner. I said I need my kiddo's jeans hemmed, he said no problem have her go try them on. NO mention of price, nor the credit card thing (like Kenny's review below). When I come to pick them up, I find out about the no credit card thing and that her Gap jeans are going to cost $22.50 EACH to be hemmed, one inch. Just a hem. NOthing else. The jeans themselves were $18 to begin with. I was in SHOCK. Lesson learned and advice to you all - ASK FOR THE PRICE FIRST. I am used to an $8-$10 for a hem. $22.50 was obscene. I am sure the work was great. But my kiddo will be out of those jeans in a matter of two months b/c/ she's growing so fast. Waste of money. Pissed off and shame on them for not telling me the price first. read more

They have altered multiple dresses and bridesmaid dresses for me and I have been extremely satisfied every time. The price is reasonable and the turnaround time is amazing. I had to switch dresses with another bridesmaid who was pregnant and they made a size 4 dress fit a size 8 person so she could wear mine more comfortably. They are truly wonderful. When you want something done right, by people who care, then this is the place to go! Rydell was my first experience inside of a tailor shop, and I will continue to come here. Upon arrival, I had a gentleman who took notes of the alterations I would like made to a suit. He was well informed of what I was looking for, gave excellent suggestions, and knew exactly what it would take to accomplish the work I wanted. A couple of days later, I picked up the suit, and was impressed with the impeccable craftsmanship. A large chunk of the shoulder was taken out (per my request and the tailor's suggestion), and there were no negative indications of such work being done to the suit. Also, much of the suit was altered to give a "slimmer" look (which I prefer), and it looked great when trying on. It was basically an entirely new suit! Needless to say, I left here feeling confident about my purchase, as well as confident in knowing that I have a suit which I will love to wear for many years to come. Don't get me wrong - they do great work. But unless you need them to create a custom suit out of the rarest silk, it is not worth the EXORBITANT price. Listen to the other reviewers who were blown away by how much he charges for extremely simple work. Do not expect to get out of this place for under $40 (cash), even for something as simple as a hem. Taking something in 1/2 size at the waist is $52. FIFTY TWO FREAKING DOLLARS. There are other tailors in the area (Swyden, for example) who do fine work for 1/4 of the price Rydell charges. Do not support this behavior in our community. I am more than willing to pay a bit extra or sacrifice convenience in order to shop local, but when you see this guy and his wife both driving around in $120,000 cars, after you've just paid out the rear for a stitch, it hits you. Obviously, many people are willing to pay the price for his services if they weren't he would go out of business or if business was slow he would lower his prices to increase volume. That's how the free market and supply and demand works- it's called capitalism! And who cares if he drives a $120k car...how he spends his money isn't anyone's business. He's busy and has loyal clients that won't go anywhere else for a reason. He does exacting work and I wouldn't take my nicer clothes anywhere else- I had a very bad situation involving a bridesmaid dress and a tailor once so not taking that risk again:) For easy hemming jobs on jeans and such I might use an alternative:) Definitely ask for prices- this is where you want to take your nicer items! read more
