I understand the poor reviews. I have not had an experience directly with them but a family member of mine has been basically ripped off. He was told to drop off a power washer for repair. Gave a deposit. They did not fix it. Tried to get it back and was told that they no longer have it. Home Depot told him to take it there. It was brand new and broke after 1 use. They would not take it back. Supposedly it was 5 day after return policy although another person said that was not accurate. If this is where Home Depot recommends, they should and will know about this. He just wants his power washer back. Will be filing a formal complaint with the Attorney Generals Office as well as Channel 10 News Consumer Complaints with Tracy Davidson and the Better Business Bureau. read more

No baskets or carts. Pricing varies from "cheapest anywhere", to "average", to "overpriced". Good old hardware store that could use a little reorganization and a new layout. I had 2 keys made for the same lock. One works , the other does not. I took it back. They worked on it and it still doesn't work. I went back again and the owner/manager was nasty and refused to give me my money back. He said keys are not guaranteed and told me to bring in the lock. REALLY?? He can't refund $2!!! We went to S & H hardware looking for some specialized door hardware back on November 15th, 2021. It was actually exciting walking around seeing so many items and choices. The salesperson Jim, showed us our choices and seemed friendly. While my husband was writing up the order, I went through the aisles in the other room. The sign on all the shelves said 50% off everything, so I purchased a few cleaning supplies. When I got to the cash, the cashier told me that 2 of my items were not on sale. I asked why the sign said off "everything" and he told me it was a mistake. I made the purchase anyway since I had 15 minutes in line to be served. While this was going on, Jim told my husband that the hardware would be in 2 weeks later. My husband called Jim in early December and was told an additional 2 weeks. I called Jim around Christmas time and was told "I did not tell your husband 2 weeks then, it is 2 weeks from now". I waited until mid - January and was again told 2 weeks. Supply chain issues have become commonplace today, but poor customer service is unacceptable. Today Jim kept talking over me and was extremely rude. We were planning on purchasing kitchen cabinet handles when we returned to pick up our door hardware. We will absolutely NOT! in December we went to get a hinge repaired which was for a china cabinet. Excuse after excuse and finally was given a temporary one. 9 months later we asked for a refund and was refused. we paid 50 upfront for the repair and the temporary hinge was 40.00 according to Jim. Couldn't find metal sidewalk grates for the water/sewer drains at Lowes. Staff there and a customer agreed that if S&H does not have it, no one does. Go to S&H on Wednesday evening as this is their only late night hours. Go through a completely seemingly disorganized store with product all over the place. Show what I'm looking for, and within seconds I have a replacement in my hands. I needed a second one, so one guy goes to look for it in the back. Can't find it, and another guy goes and retrieves it also immediately. I had some very interesting conversations with the others behind the counter; I mostly just agreed with what they had to say. I would have given 5 stars, but I'm almost certain they overcharged me a couple of dollars. They claimed it was the tax, but when I figured it out again at home, it should have been a couple of dollars cheaper. I wasn't planning on a return trip. 0 Rating - Poor Customer Service!!! Purchased 2 security storm doors for $3,000. Doors were measured by manager, Jim's contractor, Ian and written up by Jim. In spite of order being written up incorrectly and delivered with no boxes, one door was correct with the entrance knob on the left to match the inside door. The second door had the knob on the right. the inside knob is on the left. When told of the error Jim said we ordered it that way so the inside knob and storm knob would not obstruct each other. Not true, there's 8 inches between each door. Also I was told 40% of doors in city have knobs on opposite sides. Not so! I was told I could get the correct door if I paid $650 and S&H would pay the other half; not admitting it was totally his error. Also less supportive enclosures came with doors with no backing. On the phone he said I could return them and I could pay the upgrade difference. When I returned them he refused to accept them and walked away from me. I went there for string for my string trimmer, giving them the old reel that was in there. They sold me the wrong string that does not fit my trimmer, when I returned it they did not have the correct string and would not give me my money back, only store credit, even tho it was totally their mistake to begin with. On top of that I found out the salesman that sold me the wrong item charged me two dollars more than he should have. When I got my store credit it was two dollars less than what I paid. I had to go home get the original receipt and then they gave me the entire amount back as store credit. Their mistake twice. Here's the other side of the story-- As a long time resident of the area, here's what I know: S & H has been there for as long as I can remember. The place has always been known to be outrageously expensive comparably. The upside is, they will have it when no other hardware store does or they will know what you're talking about and order it for you. Do I ever go to S & H first? Never, but when Home Depot or Lowe's doesn't know what I'm asking for, I go to S & H and it's there in their stock or they are willing to order it. read more

I think the filtered reviews are a more accurate assessment of this place. I went here once to buy locks. I needed a set of three, all keyed the same, for three separate doors. I saw that they were selling prepackaged sets of 2 by Kwikset. I was told that for 3 locks, they'd have to get the locksmith to do extra work and make me a third, as Kwikset didn't make sets of 3. The price was outrageous, but what choice did I have? So I'm in Home Depot the next day and there on the shelf were Kwikset packages of 3. So the salesman at S & H was not well informed, a complete liar or little of both. When I told him about the locks at Home Depot, I was met with outright hostility. I thought the salesman wanted to fight me. It was bad. Luckily a manager stepped in and offered to sell me the locks at the same price as Home Depot. It was a respectable gesture, but the damage was done. I always steer people away and I've never been back there since. And that was in 2001! Hard to believe they're still around. But I guess some people have to eat the whole pig before they've realized they've eaten pork. read more

Absolute worst customer service you could ever possibly imagine. It would take me days to document the hell they put me through for over six months. They simply do NOT return phone calls, ever. Owner is a jerk and hung up on me when I tried to find out where a special order was. Employees flat out lied to me on numerous occasions to get me off the phone. No exaggeration, called at least 40 times, never once was my call returned from either store. Take a minute to read the other reviews, and check google and the BBB, S&H has horrible reviews everywhere, and it almost all revolves around the complete lack of customer service. If your equipment manufacturer sends you to S&H for a warranty repair, demand another referral. Our cordless electric lawnmower manufacturer (Greenworks Tools) told us that the problem we had with the mower was a known issue and sent us to S&H for the (pre-approved) warranty repair. When we dropped it off, S&H was already familiar with the issue as they had seen it before. They even had an example of it right on their cash register. Several weeks later, they called to say the repair was complete and asked me to call back, but the person leaving the message did not give his name. So I called to confirm it was ready and was told "if that's what the message said, then it should be done." Imagine my surprise when I arrived and was told it would be just under $60 - cash or check only, so you can't dispute the charge - for something I was told would be covered by my warranty. The service manager (or whatever his title is) told me that there was an electrical short caused by dirt, which isn't a warranty repair, and the warranty repairs they had done were "clean." (Clean or dirty, same malfunction, and they'd get paid by the company either way. Why try to extort it from the customer - unless they expect to get paid twice?) Fortunately, I didn't have cash on me, so I went out to my car. After a few deep breaths, I called Greenworks to let them know what was happening with their authorized warranty repair center and ask them how I should proceed. The customer service representative sounded amused by the ridiculousness of their claim that dirt caused the problem. Rather than force me to deal with S&H any longer, they offered to send me a brand-new lawnmower, free-of-charge. (A+ to Greenworks for their awesome customer service and three-year warranty. F- for their choice of repair shops.) My only regret, aside from not asking to take my mower elsewhere in the beginning, is that they got to keep the (I assume) functional mower and one of our spare batteries. I can only hope that the manufacturer asks S&H to ship it back to them. First of all, if a customer leaves equipment expecting a no-charge warranty service, you call BEFORE you make any uncovered repairs. Secondly, if you want to speak to a customer, you leave your name on the voicemail. Third, when the manufacturer has already told someone their issue is covered, don't expect them to meekly pay your ransom to get their equipment back. read more

My experience with S and H Hardware on Castor Avenue has been horrific. As a 78-year old senior citizen, the treatment I received from this establishment has been one of the worst experiences of my adult life. I wanted to support a local business during the pandemic, so I tried to order a window for my bathroom from them. It has been a nightmare ever since. The condescending, disrespectful, and untruthful manner in the way the employees have treated me in the last month is shameful. Trying to get in touch with Andy, the owner, is impossible, and he never returns phone calls. The people who are employed by him have given me a run-around and have caused me to feel extremely uncomfortable and anxious over a small window. On August 28, I spoke with Jim and I mailed a deposit check for $275, which I received a receipt for on 9/3. Since then, things have gone downhill. The first man who came out to measure was very vocal about not ever putting in a window with flashing, which is what my window needed. That started a string of phone calls where I expressed concern about the man's ability to install flashing after he told me he didn't have that experience. Jim accused me of lying about what the man said. Jim said he would send out Hector to re-measure to make sure the measurements were okay. Jim said the window would be in on Sept. 21. I called during the week of 9/21 because I hadn't heard from them. Jim accused me of lying again and said he never said the window would be in on 9/21. He was very rude, extremely condescending and nasty. He said that he has to call the manufacturer and that he would call me back. In the meantime, I continued calling the store asking for the owner, Andy, but never had any luck with him being around or returning my calls. The next day, on 9/24, Jim said the manufacturer didn't start on the window yet. He very rudely said he doesn't want me calling to find out when the window is in. He will call me. I didn't hear from him for a long time. On 10/6, I called. Jim said he had to send a 3rd person out to measure the jamb since the other two men didn't measure that. So obviously after all this time, the window still hadn't been ordered. When I asked Jim why it took so long to realize the jamb wasn't measured, he said I was too high maintenance and that he was cancelling the order, and that I wasn't getting my $275 deposit back. He then hung up on me. An employee named Steven called to try to resolve the situation by setting up a 3 - way conversation between Jim, Steven, and me. That conversation never happened because Steven didn't show up at the scheduled time. Steven finally got back to me at the end of the day and I told him to let Jim cancel the order and that I would appreciate my deposit back since Jim was cancelling. On 10/7, Steven said that he would get back to me about the deposit. It is 10/13, and I haven't heard from anyone at S and H Hardware. As if the pandemic hasn't been stressful enough, the added stress over this window is outrageous. And on top of that, S and H Hardware keeping a $275 deposit from a senior-citizen is appalling. I will never shop at this business again, and I have been telling everyone I know about the horrible treatment I have received at S and H Hardware. read more

S&H has an awesome collection of cabinet hardware. However, shoppers can't see most of it, and the salespeople make it harder to shop, not easier. The hardware room is extremely congested and almost impossible to move in, and the displays are very tall and very crowded. Anyone who is short or heavy, or who has trouble bending, twisting, looking up or climbing, or who needs any assistance of any kind should not bother going there. Even though there are boards and boards and boards of mounted samples, most are inaccessible and impossible to see. Store policy is that they will not bring the boards down for viewing. So, with few samples in stock, if you want to see something, you have to buy a sample that will be ordered for you. When we went there I asked to see a particular cabinet pull. I was told that it took them a long time to create the display, and therefore they were not going to unscrew it just so I could look at it. They would, however, allow me to climb up on their ladder if I really needed to touch it. When I declined to use their ladder (I am a 60 year old woman with neck and back issues), the salesperson berated me and called me names. Literally. Although S&H had other cabinet pulls I might have chosen, I chose to leave rather than be abused. Once home again, I was able to find all the cabinet pulls I had liked at S&H available online, with better product information, better views, better prices, and faster delivery. There was no reason to waste my time, money and gas on a trip to S&H. I love a good local hardware store. But, considering how inconvenient this was and how they treated me, it would take an emergency to make me want to try this place again. read more

I am a woman, senior citizen and cancer patient. I have gone to this store for many years, and its so sad what it has become. A cesspool. No humanity works there; not inclusive; no women; only one young African American that they ordered around. Young guy on the phone was rude before I went there and he told me that I had to bring in my kitchen aerator or he couldn't help me! DUH! I arrived 20 minutes before closing. At least 4 men ignored me. Then they each took turns berating and being rude to me. I spoke up for myself; several times they threatened me by saying that it was "all on video." I was told by one piece of excrement that I was rude and ugly and told to leave or shut up. I left, never to go back. Telling everyone I know how awful it was there. I question his manhood, because only wife beaters talk to women that way. Needless to say, they were so stupid and rude that I chose to leave. Do NOT go there. The smart, competent men who used to work there are gone. The one lone African American attempted to assist me, but he was stopped by a bossy fat guy, who not only screamed at me, he screamed at other employees. Not a pleasant, helpful environment at all. The guy who works in the department to the right even walked away and refused to help while I waited. Their customer service stinks. How no one has put a civil law suit against S & H Supply Co. is beyond me. The WORST! They literally bullied me. Took my power washer there at the recommendation of the manufacturer and they manipulated and lied through the whole process. They put in the wrong pump and claiming they were giving me a deal. The manufacturer sent them a new pump to install and they were to give me the money back. After the power washer was there for one month and a half, I went to it pick it up after I called and told them I was done playing games and wanted my machine and refund. Upon arrival, the owner cowardly talk about me behind the counters, and had his employee (Aaron) deal with me. He proceeds to write on the receipt "No Warranty"; why??? The machine was being serviced for a pump that Simpson(Manufacturer) sent to them. So I asked why are you writing no warranty on the receipt, no reply, and just tells me that either I sign the receipt or they are locking the door and I can come back to get the power washer some other time. So, I crossed out the "No Warranty" and signed the receipt; so then they would not give me a copy of the receipt. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE Luckily, I videoed the whole conversation and they are not done with me. They are accustomed to bullying their customers and the customers get so frustrated that they just let it go. Unfortunately, manufacturers keep sending customers to them (I am making sure Simpson is well aware of this situation and rethinks of giving them any more business) and they continue to be able to keep their doors open through that NOT their good costumer service or good work ethic. read more

All of the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and they work promptly to assist you. The pricing is hit or miss. Some stuff is very low, and some stuff is a little higher than what you'd get from a bigger chain repair store. But that is to be expected as they are specialty and they keep hard to find things on hand. There aren't many family owned specialty hardware stores in the area anymore. This one has been around for decades. My parents went here constantly when I was a child, and now as an adult I find it to be what you need, especially when there is something that's hard to find online or at a bigger store. Definitely a store to keep in mind if you need to close quick trip. All the staff in the store were friendly anyone we ran into asked if we needed any help. What a great store!!! I spend extra time in there just to stare at all the various cool things they sell there, things you can't get anywhere else. Don't listen to the people who complain about the store being overpriced. Where else can you get the kinds of things they sell there?? Nowhere. And when you have an older house with original hardware and everything that comes with it, it's not so easy to find replacements. They have to charge more than big box stores because they have an enormous inventory of specialty merchandise that doesn't move fast like Lowe's or Home Depot's does.
