The local Honda dealer I have used my whole life recently closed its doors which sent me looking for a new shop for my needs. I gave CT Cycle works a shake with a simple tire change that ended up in great disappointment. I will say, Steve (the owner) seems like a nice enough guy and quite knowledgeable, however... I can't help but feel that he is just not careful enough. While removing the stick-on weights from my rim he chose to use carb-clean and a rag to remove the adhesive residue. In the process, the factory paint came off the wheel right down to the bare aluminum essentially ruining the appearance of the rim. I keep my bikes in showroom condition so this episode was very upsetting. Not only did I get changed for the labor, but he commented "you won't notice it much on the bike!!!" Well... it looked bad enough where I am now in the process of having both the front and rear wheels powder coated to fix the problem (at the price of over $300.00 total). The issue I have is that this didn't have to happen if care was taken. 1) If you're going remove adhesive from a painted surface, using a non aggressive cleaner as a first approach (olive oil, Goo Gone, etc). 2) If that doesn't work and something harsh is to be used, try it in an inconspicuous area (like where the tire came off) first to see if it reacts with the paint. 3) I would have rather got the wheel back with the residue on instead of this. 4) Most of all... if it happened in one place on the rim DON"T REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE as it happened in two locations!!! Sorry... I just couldn't ever go back!

I looked at some of the other reviews written and I couldn't agree more. This is a terrific shop; great sales dept. (Dan) and the owner (Dave) are both super friendly and laid back. His daughter works there and is also very friendly. They have two beautiful and VERY friendly Golden Retrievers greeting customers as well. I mention all of this because it puts one at ease when you're there browsing / shopping. Full disclosure: I've been browsing there for a couple of years; I've stopped in quite a few times. I never felt pressured or annoyed by Dan or anyone there; they are super laid back. So I finally decided on buying a Ducati and the whole process was handled so well, from beginning to end. I've also had the service dept. install some mods for me and change out the rear sets, etc. Again - even the guy I dealt with in the service dept. was friendly and helpful. I read in one or two of the reviews that people were traveling pretty good distances to shop here and get service done on their bikes. I guess I'm extremely lucky to be about 7 miles (15 mins) from New Haven Power Sports.

Two months later, I got on the bike and the kickstand fell off, causing very minor damage. The bolt was not secured properly, and the kickstand itself was perfectly fine and intact--the problem was their installation. I called the service manager, Will, and he told me I could get the bike towed and that he would find prices for me to replace everything. I explained that the issue was not a failed part, but that it had not been put on correctly. I wasn't satisfied that the discussion would lead to a resolution , so I called the owner and explained what happened. The owner asked for pictures, sent me a text message telling me where to send them, and said they would follow up. Instead, I got a phone call from Will threatening me and saying I had gone behind his back. He told me it was a used part, not to come to his department anymore, that they were not servicing my bike, and that if I came there they would have me arrested. When I asked to speak to the owner, he said the owner did not want to talk to me and that he was talking to me instead. I only wanted the stand fixed so I could ride my bike, but instead I was met with hostility, threats, and refusal to take responsibility. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend taking your business elsewhere.

The Devil's Gear is a bicycle shop that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 2001. It was founded by…read morelocal artist and cyclist Matthew Feiner. After seeing the need for a community bike shop in New Haven, Feiner used the last $600 in his bank account to open his own shop. It originally opened in a cramped old Wooster Square factory space at 433 Chapel Street. For his new shop, Feiner chose the name "The Devil's Gear" as a reference to the 1988 Paris-Nice stage race. The French press said that Irish cyclist Sean Kelly was riding "the devil's gear". In addition to selling bicycles, the shop also hosts bike tours, maintenance clinics and weekly training rides. The shop has made a number of moves over the years: first to 151 Orange Street, then down the street to 137 Orange, and finally to their current location at 845 Chapel Street. In 2018, longtime employees John Brehon and Greg Ledovsky came on board as co-owners of the shop. Feiner later stepped down due to medical reasons, but Brehon and Ledovsky continue to build on the foundation and legacy that he left behind. In 2021, Brehon and Ledovsky decided to start selling skateboards at the shop too. Local skateboarder J. Joseph came on board to handle the skateboard department. I've been doing business with the Devil's Gear for well over 10 years. When I first became interested in cycling, I went there to get all of my cycling accessories and helpful tips. I still ride a 2013 Jamis Satellite Sport road bike in a beautiful Tiger's Eye finish which I bought from the shop. I take it back to the shop every year for my annual tune-up. In addition to all of their great products and services, The Devil's Gear does a lot for the local cycling community. I stumbled upon this company by some sort of search engine hijinks...I had typed in "Velofix" and…read morethe first entry to pop up on Google was "Velotooler" and the spelling was similar enough that I clicked on it carelessly while doing something else, and then I stupidly assumed that Velofix must have renamed itself. Boy, what a mistake that was. The website looks good, there is a nationwide map showing where the mechanics are available, and I found one within 15 minutes of the suburb of Boston where I live. I was pleasantly surprised to find that as per website, said mechanic was available within just 3 days (Velofix has much longer wait times, can be 1-2 weeks on average) and the service (tune up of an e-bike) was actually $30 cheaper than what Velofix wanted. Wonderful! Or so I thought. Alas, that's about where the "wonderful" part ends. First off, the damned website is glitchy as all hell---after I create an account and submit all my details (address and CC info), I hit the "Pay" button...and nothing happens. So I double-check that all my adblocking browser extensions are turned off, reload the website, and do everything all over again. Same result. Over and over again. I even try using a different browser (Chrome) and again, no luck. So I hit the "Chat" button to get help from Velotooler. Got a live person after about 30 minutes, during which time I had left my computer, so we proceeded to play chat-tag for a couple rounds. She later sent me an email follow up the next day: said sorry, but I needed to first use their "Add payment" link on my account before placing the order. Which I did, but the same thing happened...screwy website took all my info, then on the last page where there was a final "Add payment" button, again nothing happened upon clicking. At this point, Velotooler's "help" person who had been helping me simply ghosted. Now mind you, I had been totally civil and polite the whole time, never cursing, blaming her for the problem, or personalizing it. Lo and behold, I suddenly had an idea...why not try the god awful Microsoft Edge browser! And so I did, for the perhaps second time since it was foisted upon my PC. And praise da good lawdy lawd, it finally worked...payment info was finally accepted, and the work order finally went through---just "pending confirmation" from the mechanic. Problem is, a full 24 hours later, my requested appointment date/time had still not been "confirmed" by the mechanic. I sent a further chat request for help. No response, not even an acknowledgement of receipt. Another half day later, I get an email notification from Velotooler that my appointment had been cancelled and that my credit card would be refunded. With zero explanation, apology, and or any actual human response from any Velotooler support staff. Ergo, it's clear to me that Velotooler is just not ready for prime time yet. They are obviously a half-baked amateur operation, probably understaffed and underpaid, and the staff clearly under-trained. And the website designer should get a good hard kick in the ass right out the door. I'm going back to Velofix, even if I have to wait a whole week for the next available appointment and pay a little extra dough. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars instead of 1 is that they did issue a prompt refund (will have to check my credit card to make sure it does go through, my confidence in these people is pretty low as you can imagine).
