There is something whimsical about an actual toy store. I'm not talking about one of those big box toy stores, I'm talking about a toy store that has actual toys. Toys that are made out of materials that are wood or metal. Toys that are subtly educational. Toys that you actually hold onto even after you are not a kid anymore. S.W. Randall is one of those few places that still exist. And they exist to their fullest. This place is two floors of toys that span the ages. I could honestly be in here for hours nostalgically looking at just one toy. Staff in here were very pleasant and knowledgeable of what they had in house. They were able to tell me where something was without even thinking about it. It made my visit so much easier than making myself frustrated by looking myself. Even if they didn't have the item you were looking for, you feel comfort in knowing that they were empathetic to you. I consider this an oasis in downtown. In an age where toy stores are going out of business due to online shopping SW Randall remains as a showcase of not only quality toys but also trains, models, and Goebel collectibles. The Goebels they had were devoted to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. I was attracted to the sign outside that read 60% off third floor. I went in to find out what was going on. I learned that this is their semi annual sale where they clear out old merchandise and bring in new. I had to walk up two flights of stairs to get there. Didn't see an elevator. There was a sign on each floor advising that you cannot take merchandise from one floor to another. Each floor has its own check out area. I looked over the sale merchandise and while not much caught my eye, I did notice that a number of items were marked "sold as is." Guess this is a way for them to get rid of damaged merchandise. I worked my way down to the 2nd floor which was full of model trains and hobbies. I had grown up in a family where we had these trains but with the passing of time had to get rid of them. I returned to the first floor and saw quite a bit of merchandise here. Anything ranging from music boxes, jewelry cases, Beatle souvenirs, Christmas items like Dicken's Village and other vintage items are on this floor. There's also movie themed items for sale such as Wizard of Oz. I loved the snowglobes and music boxes themed to the Phantom of the Opera still running on Broadway. They have a special section devoted to dolls. I've always been a doll lover so I headed there. Inside I found a vast collection of collectible Barbie dolls that I haven't seen in quite some time. I was told that although pricey they are still in their original packaging and it would be something you would not want to take out of the box if you wish to display it. Along the back wall was a large collection of Madame Alexander dolls. They have stands for them which is sold for a small fee to display them. Madame Alexander is a well known noted brand and these dolls are not only well made but can be collector's items. I learned that they were not getting any more in this year but I would have to wait until next year to see anything new from them. Normally they are dressed in world costumes or movie themed outfits. I was blown away at a Rhett Butler doll! Definitely a must for anyone who collects "Gone with the Wind." You can also get dolls themed after the Wizard of Oz movie including the Tin Man and the Wicked Witch along with Dorothy. There had other lesser named brands as well but still I could tell much better quality than you would find with the American Girl series. SW Randall has multiple locations in the city and even though they are pricey for the most part you are getting quality. I always recommend you inspect the merchandise before purchase to make sure it is clear of defects. Return policy is limited and rules are written in the check out area. What a magical little toy shop! It's rare to stumble upon a business these days with an old school charm that still manages to have just about everything you may ever need in a toy store. The range here is from classics, to more modern, developmental to just cute and cool. They also have an awesome books section! I came in here just looking for a children's book as a gift supplement, and felt as though I could have wandered through here for hours. It seems as if every nook of the space is filled with whimsical goods to play with. They even have a section in the back with gift bags and cards. Although they have a variety, I found more of them to be for birthdays, so I still found my self stopping by a nearby drugstore to find something more suitable. Toys: If they stop fascinating you, then your inner child has died tragically. Last week, for the first time in all my years in Pittsburgh, I made my way into SW Randall's store to merely kill time. After telling the middle-aged gent running the store (a person I'll refer to as the Toykeeper) that I just wanted to have a look about the place, I walked out with a ceramic, bat-winged goth fairy for my beloved. The aisles of the store seemed to go on without end, and I was only on the first floor. I said to the Toykeeper, "Man, I never knew this place was so big! I've never been in here before. I thought it was just a little gift shop." "Yeah, we get that a lot," the Toykeeper said. And a lot is what they carry. Competing for my attention were men of tin, bugs that scurried about when knobs on their sides were cranked, greeting cards, dragons, superheroes of plastic, princesses of glass, beings of imagination, creations of mirth... Upstairs, I was greeted by the Apprentice, a 20ish man who was rather tickled when I told him that I write reviews on area businesses. Here could be found action figures, educational toys, card games, miniature soldiers, toy trains, and myriad other things that run feathers along the brain. The entire inventory of amusement entranced a mother and son who were visiting from Houston as well as myself. To think that in SW Randall's 42 years and my 38, I had never been inside the place before. Had I come to this spellbinding emporium at the age of 9, Toys R Us and Children's Palace would have been quickly forgotten along with Transformers, GI Joe, and Masters of the Universe. Bring your children here. Bring your nieces and nephews. Bring yourselves. SW Randall is a true Downtown treasure trove of wonderment. Three huge floors of all of the toys you could ever remember! This is the biggest, most unique toy store I have ever been in. The first floor has a bunch of random toys, a huge selection of nutcrackers, mini town decor, a doll room, a card section, and so many other things. The second floor has train sets, LEGO sets, puzzles, games, etc. The third floor is a huge floor of hundreds of types of dolls (also a real live Santa on holiday weekends). I hope this place stays open forever. It's really the coolest toy store I have ever stepped foot in, and I wish I would have gone there as a kid. My mind would have been absolutely blown. This charming toy store is a must visit attraction in downtown Pittsburgh. If you happen to work downtown just a stroll through the store - puts your mood as ease (if you happen to be having a challenging day) from the sounds of the music box type music playing over the loud speaker (usually). By far my favorite toy/hobby store... there is just something magical about this place. You'll find unique toys you can't find anywhere else along with toys that will bring you back to your childhood. As I walk through, I say "I used to have that! I wonder there that went" and end up calling my parents later to see what happened to it. There are two floors filled with gifts, toys, collectibles and games. This place is super unique and fun. It's a very old building, which adds to the charm. They have really unique kids toys, dolls, comic/superhero/vintage items, Pittsburgh souvenirs and items, and some political/novelty/funny items like cards, books, pins, and magnets. It's often a place I would just browse and talk to the owners because they're very friendly and like to show off all of their new cool stuff. It is very vintage, very nostalgic, and they have toys for people of ALL ages! 3 floors worth of toys, this place is essentially Pittsburgh's version of New York City's FAO Schwarz, though just not as well known, hence, MORE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PLACE! 2 other store locations can be found in Squirrel Hill and Shadyside. Yes, there is an elevator here for wheelchairs and strollers, but you must ask for assistance from the staff in order to use it, as it is a very old and historic elevator and they are trying to preserve it. read more

Fancy a little time travel? Visit S.W. Randall where the staff and products feel as though they're from an era long past. I was shopping today for a book of paper dolls, and though the doll floor is closed in the summer (too hot), one of Randall's faithful associates took me up on an elevator straight out of Gatsby, complete with a crystal chandelier. That in itself was worth the trip, but so was the book of paper dolls that I purchased for a mere 4 bucks (pretty sure it's worth more like 40). Someday I'd like to spend an entire day just perusing the shelves and shelves of new and vintage toys. Not only do they have every toy imaginable, but every game too. So attention board-gamers, this is a shop worth visiting. In my opinion, the downtown location is twice as nice as the Shadyside locale, but to each their own. I have visited this toy(e) store a few times. As soon as you enter the place, you squeal with delight over the neat selection of merchandise. The store is three floors, although the top floor was closed around Christmas. They sell action figures, board games, matroyshka dolls, science kits, trains, dolls, ornaments, figurines, jewelry, greeting cards, etc. I was happy to find a wide selection of puzzles for a relative of mine who likes puzzles. It was a Fallingwater Lego set in the window drew us inside this odd little establishment. The first third of the store is pretty much crap. I think it's creepy old dolls and wooden doll houses - stupid shit like that. But once you stroll further in, you'll find tons of cool shit. Puzzles and sciencey toy sets and squishy snakes and flashing balls and model cars. I have been coming to Randall's since I was a little girl. I am 40 now and I have been out of state forn17 years. This past summer I moved back to Pittsburgh and I have taken my three kids there several times. Nothing has changed about it, which is a good thing. The store carries all kinds of toys and some gifts too. The best thing about it is that the things they carry are different, unusual and so much better than the "big box" toy stores. There are three floors of toys. The third floor has an excellent selection of good quality dolls. Sometimes you have to ask an employee to go up there, since it is not always open there. The second floor has real Lionel trains, as well as some other brands of trains. Also on the second floor they have Legos, puzzles, art and craft stuff, and a huge selection of Playmobil among other stuff. The first floor has a room with stuffed animals, a huge selection of Matroushka dolls, Nutcrackers, Santas. Another area has Dept. 66 villages, etc. etc. etc. There is too much to list! I encourage everyone, young or old to enter SW Randall downtown. You'll step into a store that carries all the dreams of childhood. I visit Pittsburgh like clockwork once every four years for business. This trip happened to be coincident with the holidays and as usual I would extend my stay with old friends in Highland Park, burning the weekend remembering the fumes of an extended adolescence now fading fast. As often happens, these old friends now had two young daughters and I didn't want to show up empty-handed. All of the above brought me the fine marble desk of the concierge in a hotel downtown which does not bear comment here. Without hesitation she said "S.W. Randall. They're just four blocks away and a wonderful toy store." The next morning, with exactly one hour between meetings, I approached a sign of jaunty letters that spelled "S.W. Randall Toyes & Gifts". Of course for a man raised in the east coast and now fifteen years removed to the mild climes of the sunbelt, Pittsburgh in December puts me in a pleasant holiday mood. But the atmosphere behind the narrow stores finely decorated window--complete with a loop of Christmas carols on harpsichord--was a wonderful shopping experience--a joyous departure from what passes for retail shopping in this modern world. If the sustained company of toys changes a person, those people have made the most of it in the three floors of various toys, games, baubles, and entertainments. I'll leave descriptions of the store and its wares to others. The people are what make the store work a significant detour. One gentleman in particular made informed and nuanced recommendations that I in time accepted completely. Could the gifts be wrapped? Of course they could. Together or separately? Separately, please. Would you be able to return in fifteen minutes? Most certainly I would. You haven't fully lived until you've walked through a Pittsburgh winter, dashing between the lunchtime crowd in overcoats and heels, through a toystore door worn with anticipation of a hundred thousand types, stepping back into a time never remembered to collect a parcel of toys, carefully wrapped in holiday-neutral paper for a four dollar donation to charity. Nice selection. But, customer service is an issue here. I bought a bear for Christmas 2014 here. When I went back in February 2015 to get another, 3 clerks insisted that they never carried the brand. It wasn't until I said to allow me to go to the 3rd floor and I will show you that they suddenly remembered the bears. Recently I called to ask if they still had the brand and the male clerk said to another clerk while I was holding "I don't know how he doesn't know it isn't a Gund". He acted surprised that I heard him. I know it isn't a Gund because I don't like Gund! read more
