Josh was my masseuse. I chose the Zensation escape. It's the closest thing to a hammam that I could see on their menu. I booked online, paid online. He was a nice man, he asked for what I expected and told me what he was going to do before doing it. It is on the 2nd floor of a walk up so be mindful of that if you have trouble with stairs. It smelled so Yummy. I was so relaxed that I fell asleep during. SN: I have sensitive skin and did break out the next day. Where to start.... I dragged my poor tense body up the long stairs of SBT... I didn't know what to expect. The last time I got a massage was so long ago and in a foreign country where it was literally a room with a mat on the ground (it was the best massage I've ever gotten in my life. So much so that I went there every day for a year straight). As I got closer to the top of the stairs, I saw the sun pouring through the sunroof and it felt as if i was transported to some exotic place - completely different from the noisy outsides of SBT. Took off my shoes and walked in. It was super quiet and the deep red of the interior was very calming. I was immediately greeted by Collin and was guided to the lounge area where he brought some water with lemon, hot towel and a form to read over and sign. Collin was a quiet guy who answered all of my questions with a great big smile and with enthusiasm. After I was done with the form, I was lead to the massage room. It was supppperrr warm in there and the massage bed was too hot for my liking. Collin turned the AC on and turned down the heat on the massage bed. It was my birthday so I decided to get a full on 3 hour treatment. Zensation, Head & neck Intensive, 120min of Ninja Massage. When I booked it online, it showed that Collin would be doing the first and last choice and someone else would be doing the Head and neck intensive massage. Nope. It was all Collin. I felt so bad, but good god does he know how to massage! You have the choice of being completely undressed or to a point where you feel comfortable. Recommend completely undressing if you decide to go with Zensation. They use water. Zensation: I had a pretty bad sun burn on my arm and he was mindful of that when scrubbing down. The ginger towel after the scrub is soooo extremely heavenly... I don't even know how to explain... It's like a thick blanket of warm silk is being wrapped around your body. Made your body feel super soft and clean. Head & Neck intensive: I told Collin that I had problems with my shoulder being too tight so he focused on that as well as the neck. If I had to change something... I guess I would ask for more of a overall head massage instead of a pressure point focused massage. Either way, I'm not complaining, it was heavenly. He finished with a warm coconut oil scalp massage that was.... I mean, you all know how great it feels to get a head massage. Add warm coconut oil to that - I never wanted it to end! Ninja Massage: Probably felt the most pain in this one. That's not his fault, it's my lazy ass sitting for 8 hours a day in front of a computer and not stretching. Afterwards, my shoulders have never felt better. It's been 5 days and it still feels great! (I've been doing the stretches!!) My feet are temporarily in bless until my flat feet decides to return to it's usual torture. After the massage, you have time to change, drink water, gather yourself and meet Collin back outside. There, he hands you the remaining soap that you chose before the Zensation and that was left over. He asks you how everything felt and give you great advice on how to better your body. They never push you to buy anything, but man was I tempted to get everything that was on display! Overall great experience and will definitely return again! PS: SBT also sent a thank you card after! I am almost hesitant to write a review because this is my secret place where I get my Zen-sation. But I am spilling the secret. Try them! You will leave in a total nirvana and feel like you are the master of the universe. I get the 60 minute house massage from Anna. Mind you, this is not a place for you if you like someone to just run their weak fingers on your back leaving you feel teased and unsatisfied. The therapists have some muscles on them and will work the knots and kinks off your back. You can choose among many oils ($8-$12) and some relaxing tunes like waves or rainforest. It's $65 for the 60 minute massage, but get on their mailing list and they usually send out specials and also give out a free 30 minute massage to one lucky person every month. I pulled a back muscle couple days ago and after discussing with Doctor, she suggested me to try massage. I usually go to this one massage place, close to my house. But they didn't have anything available immediately. So I started to look at Yelp for a good one. This place stood out, since couple of my fellow yelpers have been here and left great reviews. I called and setup an appointment with Kelly. She wanted my Name, address, and credit card information for the appointment. I thought that was little weird. I didn't mind that though, since it is not an uncommon practice. This place was very easy to find, you have to take off your shoe and turn off the phone before you enter the place (so you don't mess with the Zen). Kelly was right there and greeted me promptly. She took me to the room and gave me an information sheet to fill and offered lemon water or Spicy hot tea. I wanted the tea. She was back by the time I was done with the sheet, with tea and hot towel (nice touch). Asked me about where and how I wanted the massage and left the room so I can get on the table and get comfortable. It was a nice warm heated table. To start the massage, she put couple of warm towel on the bottom of my feet and rubbed softly. I have never done that with warm towel and it feels amazing. She started with very soft touch and pressure points. I was thinking that touch was too soft, but it actually varies as she works your muscles. It was actually perfect for my back muscles. I must have fell a sleep few times, cause I felt like my snoring waking me up. It was an excellent feeling. There are times you can hear the cars, since this location is so close to the road. But I can't hear anything because to the awesome massage. Once the massage is done, she invited me to sit and have some apples and lemon water, and told me how to take care of the back and showed some yoga moves too. Really disappointed with this place. Had a 60 minute "warrior massage" from I think her name was Olga. Filled out the question form Asked for a deep tissue massage on neck and shoulders. Then she went through the questions and said, so you have some knots in your neck and shoulders, let's get those out. " Then ten minutes of "breath work" ( so that's 10 minutes of me breathing which I can do just fine on my own) wasting time and maybe got 8 to 10 lackluster minutes at most on my neck and back with barely any pressure.. Rest of the time was doing stuff to my feet, rubbing my arms and fingers, and massaging my head. My husband and I came in for the couples "pregnancy massage" and it was great! I was a little nervous coming in 32 weeks pregnant not knowing 100% what to expect. But once inside the massage therapist(s) made my husband and I feel so comfortable! They made sure I was positioned comfortably and took the time to talk us through what areas could be focused on, etc. I'm sure the typical massages there are great too but if you are pregnant and wanting to pamper yourself a bit I would highly recommend coming here to get a massage! read more

You may ask, "How do you have an update to a one-star review?" After this review first posted, Josh (one of the owners) did try to contact me via phone to help resolve it. I appreciated that. The phone calls came late at night (after he had finished with clients), and I was not able to call him back. Then I went out of town, and after a week, I just thought the matter was dropped. Unlike my boyfriend, I considered giving Sabai another chance. Yesterday, we both received a brown envelope via certified mail. Inside that envelope were two certified mail envelopes addressed separately to me and my boyfriend. They were sent back unclaimed (we have a front desk person, so not sure why they never got to us in the first place). I saw SBT, and thought, "Huh, maybe it's Sabai Temple trying to reach out to make amends?" I opened my letter, read it, and was a bit stunned. Then I opened the one to my boyfriend. His letter was a lot nicer than mine was. Ironically, it was my boyfriend who penned most of the review on my account as I was still seething from the phone call that day. Yet, he got the much kinder letter (which he has vowed he will Yelp about on his own account). I'll just recount what was in my letter. Essentially it was the MN version of a "f*ck you." Or at least that's what it felt like. Polite, but basically, "Don't come back," with a bit of a "We are sort of sorry, but the guy who was a jacka** to you is still with us." My favorite line from the letter: "We are pleased that you have since found an establishment in which you are satisfied with the level of customer service and feel it is best that you continue your massage care there or elsewhere. For your security, your account with Sabai Body Temple has been de-activated." I relayed the letters to my boyfriend, who proceeded to laugh about it for ten minutes. The list of ironies: 1) Boyfriend wrote most of the review on my account. Yet he got the nicer letter. Probably because Josh thinks I'm a b*tch now. 2) SBT spent $7 trying to send both letters separately. When they got returned, they re-sent it certified mail again and spent about $5. In total, the small business spent $12 to send a letter to tell former clients to not come back. 3) The amount of time they spent to write the letter. 4) Had they just left it alone, I (nor my boyfriend) would not be writing this update, but really, who politely suggests that you not come back? I get that they want this one-star review off of Yelp, but this was not the best way to do it. 5) They are clearly pissed about this review, which is ironic coming from a massage studio. 6) I thought about going back once I had time to schedule an appointment, but since they de-activated my account, I guess I won't. Recently, I injured my right thigh muscles during a Crossfit workout that incorporated lots of weighted overhead squats, box jumps, and wall balls. (Jeez, no wonder.) Ever since that brutal session weeks ago, I've been hobbling around the Twin Cities and wincing with every move. Although I enjoy lookin' like a gangsta, it's definitely not worth the pain. However, these ailments give me an excellent excuse to drop a significant amount of cash$ to see a masseuse. With so many Yelpers writing either four or five star reviews gushing about this magical, rejuvenating, and healing sanctuary, how could I not consider visiting this Upteezy hideaway? On a Friday afternoon, I ordered a SBT's Signature Massage (60 minutes) online and came in that night. I met Shondra, my lovely masseuse, and told her I scheduled an appointment because of my terrible thigh pain. Of course, I asked her to pay special attention to that area. I entered a dim and orangey room where she gave me a full body rubdown using a soothing black pepper oil. Shondra began by elbowing the knots out of my back and thumbing my strained shoulder muscles, before kneading my tight and sore right thigh. Each area she worked on felt incredibly warm and relaxed. I felt like my blood morphed into that liquid lava lamps have. Perhaps the best part of the massage was when she held my neck and head in her hands and just squeezed. I don't know if she put me in a sleeper-hold. I don't know if I got roofied from that pepper oil. But yo, I was out cold like when Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silva last year. I believe that Shondra used some hocus pocus Harry Potter ala-ca-zam voodoo spell on me. I believe I started snoring, and it was awesome. Although, overall, my masseuse did a marvelous job, I wish she could have spent a bit more time on my thigh. I understand that it's a full body massage, but I'm paying for it, and I specifically asked for her just to cater to that area. I believe my exact words were "I don't really care about the other areas on my body, just spend as much time as possible on my thigh." To be fair, she did pay more attention to that area, but not enough for me. I'm definitely a fan of Sabai, though! I hope to be back soon. read more

I saw August today - I think she may in fact be an angel. I carry tension in my shoulders and neck - when I stress I scrunch up like a turtle... It's awful, and it hurts. I was feeling especially tight this morning and decided I was going to get a massage - best. decision. this week. I called Sabai and made an appointment for a hot rock massage with a head massage add on. I arrived - there was parking, which in uptown is a small gift. You leave your shoes at the door, turn off your cell phone - enter relaxation. I was greeted by August and she took me to the room to discuss my massage. I filled out a form, similar to a medical form, but to help decide the direction of the massage or areas to focus on. August actually took the time to read through everything I wrote and then discussed what she would like to work on and how the massage would go. Then came the massage - it was AMAZING. She works slowly and methodically, pressing her hands and holding pressure as opposed to quick, repetitive movements. She use a bag filled with herbs (they have a word for it and I have no idea what it's called), it was warm and smelled divine. It was the best massage I have ever had - truly. I left with my "rock" which I can use in the bath or heat up and press into areas that are feeling tense. I also purchased some bath salts which I am looking forward to. After the massage she sat down and told me what I should work on, gave me a couple stretches and provided water and grapes. FABULOUS. I made an appointment with her immediately. It is the first time in months where I feel I can actually stand with good posture. I feel absolutely amazing. I think I love her.... :) read more

Ahhh.....I'm in a blissed out post-massage state of mind as I type this. Sabai is so lovely. You can really tell that the owners have put a lot of thought & care into creating a peaceful, beautiful space. My husband and I had the 90-minute Asian Fusion Couples Massage and it was perfection. The room is tastefully decorated, low lit with candles and soothing music. The space is very intimate and from the moment you walk in the door, you feel as though you've entered another world - far from the hustle of Hennepin Ave or everyday life. I didn't want to leave! Simple, but special touches like a tiny bowl of clementines and pitcher of water to share post-massage earn them extra points. Izaac & Josh were great and I would highly recommend Sabai. SBT, how do I tell I love thee? Let me count the ways: 1) Amazing ambiance. For something that has an entrance between a UPS and Vietnamese restaurant, you sure are purrdy. All your deep soothing purples and wood and low lighting make me feel relaxed the moment the moment I walk in. I love the fact that you make everyone take their shoes off before they come in; its like walking into your own house. The music is mellow, there are no crazy smells overwhelming you, and everyone speaks in an unhurried, gentle manner like they have all the time in the world just for you. 2) The treatments and the therapists: I am not sure how you do it, but somehow, I feel like a different person after my head and shoulders or radiant facial or 60 minute Ninja massage every.single.time, and it doesn't matter who I have; all your therapists are so good. The fact that you ask me what's going on in my head each time, regardless of who is working on me that day? Well, lets just say that most massage factories that dump you on the table and throw you out at the precise end of your treatment time do not offer this kind of personalized treatment. 3)The little extras: Your therapists sit down and chat with you as you relax in the lounge after your service, and talk about follow ups and what they saw during your treatment, while you eat your complimentary fruit. The aromatherapy that seems to come with each treatment. The complimentary seasonal tea that always seems to be on tap before each treatment. All these little things make me feel pampered and add to the feeling that you've left your cares and worries somewhere else. 4) The feeling of being someone else when I leave: Between August, Josh and Jessika, I've experienced lessened migraines, improved my posture, and found mental enlightenment into what's going on in my life. August is now gone, but whatever Josh and Jessika seem to do to train their new staff seems to carry on the tradition; take my recent services with Marcella. I came in with my head in five different places, and aches and pains all over. Marcella, who at this point is only a month into SBT, works her magic and I fall asleep on the table. I woke up feeling like I'd lost some two years of stress. How do they do it?! I've been coming here four years and there's a reason I've kept this review to myself for so long: this place is a hidden gem and I'd like to keep it that way, but at the cost of causing even longer wait times for appointments, you should know: SBT is so good its worthy of a love letter. read more

PROS: I usually try to get a massage 2-4/month. So I've tried countless spas over the years, and I have to say Sabai Body Temple is by far the best Spa I've been to in Minneapolis. It is the quintessential Spa experience. From the moment you walk in until you leave there is an uncanny vibe of peacefulness and relaxation. I recently booked a Valentine's couple's massage and, as expected, the experience was absolutely amazing for the both of us. My massage with Jessika was perfect. She hits all the right pressure points and has a very unique technique. I usually ask her to end with a head-massage, which is, once again, amazing. Sara's masseuse, Amanda, also did a great job. By the end of the massage Sara didn't want to get off the table :) So overall, if you're truly looking for a unique and special massage experience, Sabai Body Temple is the place to go! This place is amazing. Book a massage here. You will not be disappointed. After going most of my life without receiving a professional massage, I felt like there was a whole world that needed to be uncovered. So I booked a 60 minute massage at your standard "chain' massage studio and was amazed at how incredible the experience was. But I wanted something more. I researched Minneapolis massage studios and came upon Sabai--the sensual/relaxing images of red initially attracted me, but what I really wanted was a studio that used all natural products and essential oils. Check! The other massage places I went to used products that were clearly synthetic, which sort of defeats the purpose, right? My first massage was with Josh, and it was incredible. Amazing ambience, the lighting is softly lit and the whole place smells earthy & just lovely. Upon arrival they take your coat/purse/bag and escort you to the waiting room where you have a warm towel + lemon water to enjoy before your massage. Then your ninja greets you and you have a ~5 minute consultation before the massage to get to know what you want to focus on, etc. This is amazing! Most places just have a standard massage they perform and never really ask what their client wants/needs. The oil blend I'm partial to is the lemongrass one, and it smells so divine. My last massage at Sabai included a foot massage, and I nodded off to sleep at least 4 times. Even though I was partially 'forcing" myself to stay awake so I could enjoy and remember the experience. That's how you know the massage is good. The whole experience is just A+ and I make a point to schedule a massage at Sabai at least once every 1-2 months. Here's how great this place is: After my 90 minute hot stone massage about a month ago I thought about how great it made me feel every day for 2 weeks straight. Seriously. Every day for two weeks I would wake up and my first thought would be how much better my upper back felt because of that massage. I have been here twice now: once for that hot stone massage and once for a couples Asian Fusion Massage. I hesitated to write a review the first time around - the massage was so good I almost didn't want other people to know! ( I already have to schedule about a month in advance to get an after work appointment). One of the exceptional things about Sabai is how cared for you feel here: Josh takes 10 minutes at the beginning and the end of the session to speak with you about your life and how to help extend the benefits of the massage through stretches, etc. A few days after our couples massage my partner received a thank you card in the mail from August. The infused water pre and post each session (along with the fruit!) are especially nice touches. I personally prefer pretty firm pressure during a massage (I have some serious tension in my upper back - poor posture!) and for me the hot stone massage was perfect for this. The asian fusion massage was also good - in particular, being able to choose which ayurvedic oil you want - but not quite as effective for me, personally. I just made an appointment for about a month from now to try out the fire cups, so I'll make sure to update then with a review! Now my only worry is figuring out how to not just constantly think about my future appointment :) read more

My husband gave me a gift certificate to Sabai Body Temple for Christmas- what a great gift! I am nearly 9 months pregnant, so he got me a certificate for their prenatal massage. What a glorious thing! My masseuse was Katie, and she was lovely. She clearly had experience working with pregnant women, and was in tune to what I needed from the get go. She was also charming and willing to chat pleasantly with me as I felt like it during the massage. She knew EXACTLY what to do with a poor pregnant lady's body- but on top of that she was in tune with what I specifically needed to have worked on. The difference I felt in how I was able to walk leaving that place was incredible. For anyone who has ever been pregnant- I felt like she gave me MY body back as much as that is possible. I felt like my legs could work underneath me again, and I took the stairs on the way out like a champ. I didn't even realize how much my back had been affected until I was loosened up again. She also used a special oil just for pregnant women that is safe for baby and smelled WONDERFUL. The massage was a combination of pressure point work and the longer strokes to sooth sore muscles. I am someone who has always seen massage as more of a luxury... I am beginning to rethink that point. I've only ever had one other professional massage (somewhere else,) but it wasn't a pleasant experience. At that time I felt like I was being forced to fit into their "ideal experience" regardless of weather it was right for me. They also were big on the sale- trying to coerce me into a subscription package rather than being at all concerned with my comfort or experience. This was NOT the case at Sabai. While Katie recommended another massage at least after I give birth, her recommendation was genuine rather than a commission goal. I hope to return at least after I give birth, and I am confident that it will be a healthy choice for me and my body. The most amazing thing about Sabai Body Temple is that the massages here are unlike any I have ever had. Joshua is amazing and truly cares about your entire well being. Most places give you a rub and out you go but at Sabai you are taken care of before and after your service. Before each session, Joshua sits down with me and we go over how I'm feeling and what's going on in my life. I was amazed recently because I hadn't been in for 6 months yet he still remembered to ask me about the trip I'd been on in the interim. The service was amazing and he really listened to where I needed the most work. His practice is innovative and I can honestly say that through the many massages I've had, he truly understands how bodies work. SBT is an exceptional spa and my review is based solely on my experience with Josh and the SBT signature 90-minute massage. At the SBT, your session will have a beginning, middle, and end. The dark walls and curtains in the waiting lounge will begin to calm you down while you sip on lemon or cucumber infused water and refresh yourself with a warm towel scented with neroli, orange blossom fragrance. Josh will greet you with his friendly smile and spend a few leisurely minutes finding out where you are in life, physically, emotionally. He will ask you to choose from one of the three oil blends they have. Contrary to my usual habit I let him choose for me and it always hits the mark. Each massage I have had has been different with attention to the areas that need it the most. Sometimes Josh uses deep pressure which I prefer, and sometimes he doesn't but afterwards, I always feel lighter and more limber. 90 minutes flies by but also feels luxuriously long. Post-massage, Josh spends some more time with you, going over how you're feeling and what he may have found. He also suggests ways to take care of yourself which for me is usually a warm bath. You are served more water and some fruit, a refreshingly light touch to end it all. One of the best parts is how unhurried the pace is; stretching out your time even further. And you feel very well taken care of. If you haven't tried the SBT, you're missing out on something very special. read more

Wonderful experience! My first time in there, I was disappointed with the massage (that massage therapist is no longer there). But I went in for a second time after talking with the owners Josh and Jessika, and am glad I did! Like the previous visit, Josh took time with me before and after the massage to explain Sabai's method and other stuff. Good to know. The massage itself was awesome this time around, and he worked over some big knots I had. The massage started off slow and light, but progressively got to the deeper rubbing, which was great. It was most refreshing to be a customer with a small business that really wants the customer to be happy. I look forward to future sessions there. Also: The website is nice, and it is especially convenient that you can book appointments online. The space is gorgeous, very tranquil and I love the old building. The staff was extremely nice and attentive. After the massage, they brought me some fruit and water, a nice little touch! The biggest surprise was when I received a hand-written thank-you note from the first massage therapist a few days later, definitely an unexpected but kind thing! Thanks! Great massage, terrible location. I walked in and was greeted with a choice of lemon water or chilled orange tea, which was nice. However, the door to the supply room was open and I could see all of the toiletries and giant buckets of cleaner which was a bit distracting from the rest of the zen atmosphere. Next I was walked back to my massage room. It was facing Hennepin avenue and the honking of cars was more than distracting and literally the opposite of peaceful. The massage itself was great (I could tell by the giant puddle of drool under my table afterward) but there's no question that it was hard to get relaxed with the booming traffic outside. All-in-all, I would say the staff is great and experienced, but there is just no getting by the heavy traffic noise on the main thoroughfare on which they're located :/ read more

We loved our massages. After filling out our entry form my masseuse spent time asking me some questions which I appreciated - it felt like they really cared about taking care of my problem areas. Afterwards they even went over some ideas to help me continue to care for my body. My only complaint is some distracting noise outside the building - which they couldn't really control, but it disrupted the mood a bit. Would recommend. read more
