In 2021 a new playground was added to the park. The playground was built in direct cooperation with the manufacturer and the community so they could save money by not having to hire an architect. The park was designed with community input and includes swings and slides, colorful jungle gyms, a mini rock climbing wall, and a water misting station to cool down. For bigger kids, there is a pavilion and tennis and basketball courts. There is also a covered pavilion, walking path,, and picnic tables. The biggest drawback to this park is lack of parking. The park was filled with people when I visited but with not enough parking it seems like the city wants it only to be used by neighborhood residents. The city did a great job on Jaycee Park and it seems a shame that people who would have to drive over can't use it.

The community dates back to 1950 and has continued to develop over the years. Suniland Park was created from Rock Pit #21, a five acre parcel that Miami Dade County purchased in 1916. In 1938 they added 3.5 acres and dedicated the land to be used for a park. On September 8, 1962, the county officially agreed to develop the property with athletic facilities including baseball and football fields and basketball courts. In 1999, the facility was deeded by the county to the Village of Pinecrest. The park was completely redeveloped during 2002-2003. The $1.6 million improvements to the park included building a gazebo, enhancements to the basketball courts and fields, a new jogging/walking path, and lighting upgrades. Today Suniland Park is known for Andre Dawson Field and Howard Palmetto Hall of Fame Field. Andre Nolan Dawson, nicknamed "the Hawk" and "Awesome Dawson", is an American former professional baseball outfielder who was born in Miami. He played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball on four different teams as a center and right fielder and spent most of his career with the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 and is a longtime Pinecrest resident. The main field was dedicated to Dawson in 2011. The park is home to the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association, the largest recreational baseball and softball league for children 4-17 in Florida. The league was founded in 1962 and since then over one hundred and twenty thousand people have participated, coached, or attended games at the league. In terms of parks in Miami, this is probably one of the nicer parks and not as well known. It's essentially hidden from US 1 and as a result, rarely gets very packed. Highlights include: 1. Separate playground areas for age groups. Toddler play area consists of several obstacles, slides and swings. The larger kids area has a wide range of playsets including swings, slides, rocks to climb, and a large spinning climbing "tree". There's also plenty of benches and a covered seating area that offers shade. 2. Nice sized skatepark which has recently been painted. 3. Nice sized indoor shelter to host birthday parties. You need to call and book in advance. 4. Fields are nicely run and often hosts softball and baseball games. All in all, one of the nicer parks in Miami. A great place to visit with the kids. They also frequently host county and local activities and events as well.

Henry Flagler brough his Florida East Coast Railway from West Palm Beach into the area now known as Kendale Lakes in 1903. In 1926 a hurricane devastated the area plunging it into an economic depression. The New Deal Program created by President Roosevelt helped to provide work and many CCC workers built structures all over Miami Dade County. During WWII Kendale Lakes remained largely rural as the rest of Miami sprang up. In the 1970's and 80's it was considered a bedroom community with homes owned by doctors and lawyers. Today Kendale Lakes is a well-loved suburban community with excellent schools and beautiful parks like this one. Kendale Park has a large open area for walking your dog, play, and exercise. A paved walkway winds through the park and in the center of the park is a playground and outdoor exercise equipment. This is the perfect place for people living in the community to enjoy the outdoors without having to leave the neighborhood. Anyone looking for a larger park with more amenities can avail themselves of the vast nearby Kendall Indian Hammocks Park.

There are signs around that say on Friday evenings, a family movie is shown in the park, but since I have never attended any of these events, I cannot be certain as to how many people attend these events and how crowded it gets. But on a typical day or night, the park is mostly empty, and those benches under trees makes you just want to sit down and watch the day dissipate into the night.

The Miami Formation is part of an ecosystem that formed portions of the Everglades. The coastal ridge is part of the endangered Pine Rocklands which supports many rare and threatened plant species. The habitats that live on this harsh rocky terrain are some of the most biodiverse in Florida. You can see the remains of the oolitic rocks throughout this park. In addition to being a part of this areas geological history, this park has many family friendly amenities enjoyed by the community today. These include a paved exercise loop around the perimeter of the park that is ideal for walking, running, and bike riding, several outdoor exercise stations that use your body weight to build muscle, a covered playground with sand floor, and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. Note that there are no restrooms. This park is ideal for exercise, play, picnics, and taking in the wonder of Mother Nature.
