While this place is nice, free and large parking garage, and friendly staff, they take their sweet time on everything. I get taking time for each patient, but there comes a point where it's too much. Every other eye doctor I have been to takes 1.5 hours max, and that's with 3-4 tests. As I am writing this, I have been here 3 hours and still not done. The tests don't even take that long, it's the waiting on the doctors that eats way too much time. Nice and friendly office, but they need to work on time management or hire more people. read more

My appt was at 8:35. An assistant checked me out then put me in another waiting room. At 9:10 I asked why I was still waiting. They said the Dr. has other patients. I said "my appt was at 8:35, why did they book me at 8:30 if they can't see me until 9:30?" She just said there were other patients ahead of me and they were overbooked. They have no respect fir their patients or their time. They expect the patients to be on time but they aren't. They don't call and let you know they're running an hour behind. Find a better eye clinic. One that respects you. read more

Had a Biopsy done on June 5, 2017. Was told we would get results in 7-10 days. Today is the 16th. I was told this past Monday we would get a call on the 15th. Nothing. I made 2 calls today, and have been waiting to get a response. Finally at 4:30 got a Tech who said the Dr was gone for the afternoon and it would be Monday before anyone could call me. Really??!!! But guess what we have an appointment on Monday. Guess that works out cause when they tell us nothing is wrong they still get their office visit money! Will not be going back. read more

I showed up for my "first" visit w/ Sebates and was told there would be a wait. I was told it would be a half hour. I asked receptionist and she said they were running behind so it'd be another half hour. I asked if I could use the time to run a quick errand and come back in half hour. She assured me that would be fine. When I came back I had my mask on in waiting room and was scolded for putting it halfway down for 2 min. We were all seated more than 6 feet apart and that was a bit too much "policing" by the 2nd receptionist/secretary up front who apparently had nothing better to do than to scold new customers/clients. One of the staff asked the chatty Kathy receptionists to turn up the A/C (she had been working hard and was warm - I was too!) and the receptionist smiled and glibly says, "I'm fine!" and turns to the other and says, "Aren't you?" Meanwhile others in waiting room were sweating profusely. They also had a very nice TV with no volume turned on so that you could not listen to news or anything except for the receptionists conversations and other patient's medical history. What annoyed me most was having to wait 1 1/2 hours for a pre-scheduled appointment as a brand new patient. When it came to the 1 1/2 hour point I told the receptionist that I had been very patient as a new client and could not wait anymore. She did not seem the least bit phased or concerned. Terrible customer relations I'd say... I don't know if this lady was hired to meet diversity requirement or if she is always this way, but the day I was there, I will have to admit, I was irritated w/ the service and totally unimpressed!! read more

I am not from Kansas City, but I work out here. My LASIK procedure was performed in California. It is required that LASIK patients get examined pretty frequently following the procedure, so I was forced to get examined in KC. I came here for two LASIK followup exams, my one week appointment and my one month appointment. My LASIK provider in CA was nice enough to set up an appointment with Sabates Eye Centers by sending over my records and coordinating my first appointment. At my first appointment, I was "greeted" by a horrendous young blond receptionist who snapped at me and said my appointment had been canceled. After showing her my appointment card she squeezed me in. The doctor was nice enough- Dr. Lyon, however, he did not impress me. He looked in my eyes with a bright light and said everything looked like it was healing very well. I came back three weeks later for my one month follow up and saw Dr. Lyon again. Again, bright lights and you're healing well. He did not examine me or test my vision like they typically do at eye exams, even when I said I noticed a slight blur when I went from looking at my phone to trying to read the time on my DVR. I was annoyed by this and learned later, after going back to my regular doctor in CA, that she ALWAYS tests vision at each appointment following the LASIK procedure. This is what really turned me off to SEC. Maybe if I had been a regular patient they'd be more invested in my eye health, but I think that's being too generous. My LASIK procedure covers all follow up exams for a year. SEC was supposed to coordinate with them to get the exams paid for. SEC insisted on taking my insurance card, even though this procedure is not covered by insurance because it's an elective surgery. They charged my insurance for both my exams. And, they continue to send me bills for my copay despite having resolved the problem with my LASIK provider. I feel like everyone here is incompetent, from the front desk staff, to the finance people, to the doctors, to the staff. In addition to my own experience here being sub par, I overheard the staff complaining that no one enjoys working at this location because it is dirty and unkempt. Apparently the staff rotate between different centers. This system does not seem to be working for them. read more

The Sabates Eye Centers St. Luke's on the Plaza location is an extremely professional, well run practice. The reception staff are friendly and know me by name. The ophthalmic assistants are highly capable in the performance of all testing procedures from everything as basic as visual acuity to things as complex as optic nerve photography. The very best part about being a patient of Sabates Eye Centers is my ophthalmologist, Dr. Katie Macaluso, a cornea specialist. She carefully listens to what I have to say about what has been going on with my eyes. Dr. Katie also takes into account how my general health may be affecting my eye health. She has performed in-office procedures on me, and she has done so in a painless manner. Dr. Katie explains all treatment plans (i.e. drops) thoroughly. She is such a kind and warm person. Dr. Katie is the best that ophthalmology has to offer. read more

Wanted an exam to see if I had cataracts. Technical did exam and it was find. Then a doc came in and I thought he was going to review the results of the exam; didn't happen. He introduced himself and then promptly left the office and I was escorted to the front desk. This is the first time in 10 years that Medicare & my supplement did not cover the complete cost of the visit. They insisted on getting my Visa card and ended up charging Medicare, BC/BS, and me. Service at Nall location good -- however, the billing dept personnel need training. I called to inquire about a bill -- the information given was fine, but the woman handling the call must have called me "hon" at least 8 times. While I'm sure it wasn't intentional, it was very condescending and unprofessional. I'm not your child or grandchild. I'm an adult, who owns a business, and am paying your business a lot of money for their services. Get these people some training!! read more

I've had a very good experience at Sabates. From the receptionist to the Doctor, I've been treated with care and respect.

I have had a long relationship (3+ years) with my oncologist/ophthalmologist, Dr. Desai. She has always been very competent ... very thorough ... and makes sure to keep me informed of my condition. I have had several eye doctors to compare her to, and I would have no hesitation in ranking her among the top of the doctors I have seen. There might be changed appointments at times, but I have not personally experienced that with Dr. Desai. I have had other doctors who have had to change my appointment times, but I have never had that with Dr. Desai. I would (and have) recommended her to others. read more

I needed a diabetic eye exam and my doctor referred me to Sabates. I looked over the possibilities and chose the one closest to me, the one on Wornall (St. Luke's Plaza 1). I had second thoughts after reading the three reviews on Yelp but, hey, location. I was not sorry I did. From the moment I walked in I was treated with courtesy and professionalism from every single person I encountered from the receptionist, the tech person, the doctor, and the individual "behind the counter" where frames could be purchased. I'm sorry these other individuals had such poor experiences there but mine was great. read more

I have a scary situation going on for months & have seen the regular eye doctor, retinal specialist & neuro-ophthalmologist. Everyone from the ladies behind the desks, to the people who see u before the doctors AND the doctors were ALL amazing people!! I never felt rushed. I sometimes didn't understand their communication. But my neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr Gratton, just called me to explain my blood work & he spent time with me explaining his concerns & addressing mine. I just feel like I'm TRULY being cared about at Sabates & I'm SO very grateful because I'm worried but i know i have the best team at my side. read more

I had to take an older (83) gentleman who is diagnosed with mental retardation for a routine eye exam scheduled at 9:00 am. The office staff and the tech couldn't have been nicer. I realize some patients take a little more time than others, but we were there for 3 hours - and here's what happened; Dr Felix, who should have retired 25 years ago, finally came in about 30 minutes after the tech got finished. He examined my friend for 5 minutes, tops, and then said he'd be right back. We waited for 30 minutes and then since I had another appointment , we left without even seeing him again. A couple of years ago, I took another elderly MR patient to see him , it took 3 hours that time,too. If you've ever dealt with a MR patient, you know how frustrating that is for them. When he got angry at the doctor for taking so long, Dr Felix blasted him and told us that our schedule is not important, that only his is important!! I should have learned after the first time , that this man is very arrogant. I will not go back!! read more
