Do you need a new eye doctor? I did. The Eyemasters a few blocks south in Ward Parkway mall was…read morenot, how do I say this, medically equipped' as they should be. I found out later, only after switching to State Line Eye Care Center that Eyemasters didn't perform a handful of necessary eye tests on me! The Center is more professional and employs, in my opinion, better eye doctors. I recommend Dr. Cline - she is wonderful and cares enough to work around my 'sensitive' eyes. Of all the things in this world that make my skin crawl, those eye drops that numb the eyes are the WORST offenders. It takes all but someone holding me down to take the stuff (it doesn't numb the eyes so much as it makes them feel weird - like you can feel every movement in the socket - it's just an unsettling, uncomfortable feeling.) Dr. Cline always puts the least amount of drops necessary during this procedure (it can be either one to three of these awful orange drops and she only does one for me because she knows I'm squeamish.) She also gives me tons of free contact solution and cases and all that fun stuff (it's the equivalent of getting that free toothbrush kit from the dentist when you were a kid.) The staff in is always helpful and in my experiences, will go above and beyond their necessary duties to help out. For example, yesterday I went in to pick up contacts I had ordered a long time ago for myself. Even though it was way passed pick up date, they had them right there waiting for me. To my horror, my insurance card wasn't initially accepted, BUT they immediately called the card to talk to someone until it went through properly and the card was finally accepted. THANK god for those women - I don't know what I would have done if my card had been declined (go blind for awhile I guess.) I didn't know that my former eye doctors were so mediocre until I came here and then I learned there is a difference. Thanks to State Line Eye Care Center, I was even checked for several eye diseases that Eyemasters had neglected to test for, and no one's health shouldn't have to deal with medical negligence.

These are injections directly into the eye, so feeling comfortable and confident with the physician performing them is extremely important. A few months ago her regular doctor was on leave, and she was treated by another physician in the practice. The difference in her experience was very noticeable. This doctor took time to explain the procedure, rinsed her eyes afterward, and my mother left with significantly less pain and fewer side effects than she normally experiences. Because of that experience, my mother has asked multiple times to switch to that doctor. Each time she has been flat-out denied the request. This is incredibly frustrating and difficult to understand, especially since the doctor she prefers is reportedly accepting new patients. My mother is an older patient, and navigating repeated denials and administrative hurdles like this has been very stressful and discouraging for her. Patients should have a reasonable ability to choose the physician they feel most comfortable with for an ongoing treatment like this, especially when injections into the eye are involved. These treatments happen every 4-6 weeks and they are scary and uncomfortable. Instead, she has repeatedly been told she cannot switch doctors within the practice. After asking multiple times and being denied each time, she now feels stuck continuing care with a doctor she doesn't feel comfortable with, which is a very difficult position for a patient receiving eye injections every few weeks. At this point we are strongly considering moving her care to a different retina specialist outside of KU altogether. It's disappointing that a large medical system would refuse to work with a patient on something as reasonable as choosing the physician who is injecting medication into her eyes. I truly hope someone from patient relations or clinic leadership will review this situation and reconsider. I am giving two stars instead of one because there is a front desk gentleman who has always been very kind to my mother and has helped put her at ease several times. Unfortunately this situation is clearly outside of his control, but his kindness has not gone unnoticed.

However, when he attempted to inject lidocaine into my eyelid before the procedure, he injected the lidocaine into my left eye. The lidocaine included ingredients toxic to my eye, leading to excruciating pain, permanent eye damage, and disfigurement. As you can see by the attached picture, my eye is permanently disfigured. I was only 34 years old at the time of the incident, and it has caused immeasurable distress in my life. To make things worse, neither Dr. Chappell nor his employer, Moyes Eye Center, have taken any responsibility for their actions, despite Dr. Chappell admitting this under oath during his deposition: Q. Are you aware that one of the allegations in this case is that you inadvertently injected Lidocaine into her eye? A. Yes. Q. Are you able to rule out that that occurred during the procedure? ** A. I cannot rule it out. ** A. There's a number of possible causes for her postoperative post-procedure course. Q. And I know you went through some of them with me, but my question for you is are you aware if the doctors at Moyes who were -- who saw Ms. Dehnert in 2022, if you all were able to reach a consensus about the cause of her postoperative issues? A. Through many discussions and many evaluations, we have possible intraocular injection of medication as the most likely cause, with a number of other possible causes. I have been forced to hire an attorney and this matter remains unresolved, with Dr. Chappell denying my claims and offering me no compensation for my injuries. I am a single mom to a young daughter, which makes the emotional and financial stress of this incident even worse.

Initial consultation was with Dr Durrie himself, and the surgery was done by Dr Stahl. I appreciate all the work they have done. Over ten tests were performed on my eyes before starting doctor showed up. Dr Durrie went over the whole procedure in the consultation, told me about side effects. They have also warned me that there is a chance that this may not be permanent. Once I've confirmed that I would like to get the procedure done, I've talked to Brian about financing options and left happy (you just can not beat %0 financing). On the day of procedure they numbed my eyes (I declined taking Valium), explained to me everything once again, step by step, and warned me that they will be telling me what to do once the procedure starts. Oh, boy, those 5 minutes went by so fast. Procedure was painless, but a little uncomfortable. Once I got up from the surgical bed, I was able to tell the difference, my vision has changed. Forgot to mention that my husband was in a waiting room watching the procedure on TV with a nurse that went into detail explaining what was going on. I was sensitive to light for a few days, just as they said I would be, but artificial tears and sunglasses helped a ton. When you sign contract with these people they tell you there is a two year guarantee for the services performed. Well, I have forgotten about this, but they did not. They have called me about two weeks ago to remind that I need to be seen, as my guarantee will end in two months and they want to make sure I have no concerns they can help with. Say WHAT??? Can you imagine dealer calling you to ask if everything is ok with your car, as your guarantee wears out in two months?? I can't, as it does not happen. Durrie Vision does, because they care and they believe in the product they deliver. They won my heart and my business and I am so happy we chose them almost two years ago.
