I wanted to love this place so bad! It's close to my house, it's a small business (which I love to support), and right next to my favorite favorite boutique, Bayabelle. Unfortunately, the owner of this place is one of the reasons so many small businesses fail. Everything is so over priced, I bought a brush set for $29, later to find out it is $16 at Walmart! The owner also doesn't offer returns, which would be fine, except she also does not allow exchanges. I feel like that itself should reflect how much she believes in what she is selling. If you find yourself having to go to this store for some reason, google what you're about to buy, it will make your heart sink thinking about how much more you would be paying. 100% of the time it will save you to order, even with shipping. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. UPDATE***** After my bad review, the owner called me a bully and threatened to sue me. She has messaged me twice before I finally responded. Not sure why there is so many 1 stars. Someone mentioned finding products online for cheaper but just to make everyone aware, when you buy online you are likely getting fake product. Not worth it to me! I went in to Sacramento makeup studio to find make up that's better for my skin and doesn't have all the crap. I love Bill Nye powder and found it here. Wish I would have looked at Sacramento Makeup Design Studio's Yelp reviews before going to this store. Initially, I went to post a Facebook review only to see she has her Facebook reviews shut off (I wonder why?). I too so wanted my experience to be a good one. Initially, it was so I thought. This business is in my town. I support small local independent businesses...I so wanted to support a local business. After shopping at another business a few doors down I decided to see what the studio was all about as this was a new location in town. I had shopped at her former location in the Jansen Feed Building when two other ladies were working there. This time the owner was present and who assisted me. The owner proceeded to tell me how my current foundation wasn't the correct shade and that my skin was too dry - that I needed a "glow" or shine. I purchased three items spending over $140 and can't use any of them!!! Yes, not one of the items! The foundation shade she told me that was perfect wasn't. My advice is have her do a test on you and go home or around in public and see how the shade is. The shade looked fine inside the store, but not after I left. It must be due to her lighting or window tinting. The eye brown shade she told me matched my hair didn't (she sent me home with a grey color (I normally wear brown) and my hair has no color of grey in it. The last straw, I broke out from the moisturizer! I told her I have sensitive skin and break out easily. She assured me this moisturizer would not cause any breakouts. I broke out! When I questioned if I did break out from the product could I exchange it, I was told no. That should have been a red-flag right then and there. I don't mind spending good money on good products, but don't like throwing money down the drain like this. Buyer Beware! read more

I have been to this shop twice now. The interior is lovely. Everything is set up nicely and the atmosphere is nice. The biggest issue I have with this place is the pricing. This place is extremely overpriced. I completely understand that they need to make a profit and factor in the cost of shipping, but to be charged $19.99 for a brush that costs $7.99 is ridiculous. I've included photos of my identical order from Morphe's website and my receipt from this place. Granted the price would be $7.95 more after shipping but this is still an insane markup. Which would be fine, if they listed prices anywhere in store. You don't know what you'll be charged unless you A. Ask or B. Go to checkout. I'd like to be able to return these items and order them from Morphe's website, but according to other Yelp reviews this place doesn't offer a return policy due to CA state law. The only other issue with this place is how pushy the owner is with sales. I get it, she needs to make a profit but it makes it an uncomfortable shopping experience. I wanted to love this studio, but with how outrageous the prices are I won't be returning. EDIT: I did include the photo of the Morphe order, but strangely it was removed. I was going back and fourth between purchasing a single brush or an entire set. The sales associate (seemed new) told me the price for a single brush would be $15. When I went up to purchase it, the owner told me the price was $20 and would not honor the price that was previously given to me. I took two steps out of the store and decided I wanted the entire set of brushes after all. I went back into the store to exchange, which would have made her more money, and made me a happy customer. However that was not the case! She refused to do the exchange. She argued with me, and made up the excuse that the computer would not allow her to process an exchange. I find that really hard to believe, considering she is the owner, and has only recently added an associate to the mix. I will never return! It can be very stressful finding the "perfect" person to be your makeup artist. You want to find someone who understands "you" right? You want that person to understand what you are telling them when you are describing the look you want. How do you know you are using the right words to explain what you want. You don't. You need that makeup artist to be a master at their craft so they can pick up exactly what a client is telling them and turn your dream into a reality. And let me tell you reader... My brain works must faster than most peoples (that does not mean I am smarter.. hahah I wish). it just means I often spill out ideas and thoughts in a jumbled mess. Nancie took my words and transformed everything I said into perfection. I wanted Nancie to do my makeup for a photoshoot I had for my business. I figured if she can handle brides with class and ease. she could handle little ol' me. She responded to my call promptly and we scheduled an appointment. I was a bit hesitate because the last time I had my makeup done I looked a bit like a drag queen (which I told her). I love makeup and I love having it on. Nancie went above and beyond to make my session fun and personal. She explained what she was doing so not only was I getting beautified, but I felt like I was learning at the same time. I found out she offered a Makeup 101 class, which I soooooooo will be taking! So to make a long story short... and not to toot my own horn... I LOOKED AMAZING! LOL. Nancie did a PERFECTLY flawless job. My pictures came out stunning. I went out to dinner than night with friends and received so many compliments. I cannot recommend Nancie more highly. The negative reviews make it seem like the whole store is bad. However, I really only go in here to buy lashes that aren't sold in other stores (specifically red cherry). I come in once every few months and I came in about a week in a half ago to restock my red cherry lashes. Unfortunately when my friends and I got there Nancy let us know that they were out of the style I needed which is understandable since they are the more popular ones. So, she put my name on the call list and said that they would probably be restocked in about a week in a half. So, today I decided to go back to grab the lashes but this time I decided that maybe i should call to make sure the lashes were in stock. Once again Nancy answered and let me know that they wouldn't be shipped to the store till early January. I was honestly upset because I was told they would have arrived and if I had know I would've just bought them from online. Nancy was wonderful and offered to give me a free set of Lilly Lashes because I wasn't able to get the red cherry lashes. At first, I probably wasn't going to come back. I love this shop. Many people complain of pricing being too high; however, as a professional makeup artist and esthetician- I know these products are PROFESSIONAL and high quality. If you are truly into makeup, you would definitely know the difference in the quality of the products (such as pigment value, spreading, ingredients used, etc). Nancie, the current owner is absolutely fabulous. She has a TON of experience and knowledge in the industry. She knows her stuff. I am also an esthetician instructor and she is so kind and generous with her time. She blocks out 2-3 hours every couple months for our students to come in and she discusses the makeup artist industry as well as gives them product knowledge. I refuse to go to this establishment at this point for two significant reasons. 1) I think it's rather petty to block someone who had spent a fair amount of money at the store and I believe prior had been one of the people vehemently recommending this store to people who live around the area. I had gone when I was in high school (I'm a college student so a fair bit older) and they were very nice when I had gone. I don't know why they blocked me when I had spent money at the store and if I remember correctly, the last thing I had done regarding interaction was either talking with them if they would be restocking something or entering a giveaway on their social media when they had first started out which at this point, I don't even remember if I got a chance to see if I had won which was somewhat suspicious. Basically, I'm just upset that they would BLOCK a customer who had been supportive for no reason, no interaction - I also though that maybe it was because of my review, which was pretty positive but even then - you shouldn't block someone just because they left a less than glowing review. 2) I had noticed this prior, I didn't think much of it at the time but that being said, a chunk of their items are EXTREMELY marked up. Some items were less than others and some were retail prices (if I remember properly) but if I had remembered correctly, definitely the Morphe things were definitely high up in price and reading other comments confirms that - so that's unsettling on its own. Normally if you're a stocker of products, you might have a 1-2$ surcharge for possible shipping (if any surcharge) but most retailers would get something at a discount that they would mark up to suggested retail amount but when it gets to becoming $10+ more, that's unscrupulous on their part. I didn't think much of it at the time because you're saving practically on the shipping for the product but it just confuses me why they would have to mark up their prices to such a high amount. Anyways, long story short, they blocked a minor (at the time) for no reason and warning & the surcharge doesn't make sense. I'm staying clear, even though I'm sure they're nice - being blocked after purchasing as much as I did and the upcharge is just leaving a sour taste in my mouth. read more

I paid 25.99 for the setting spray when it ACTUALLY retails for 14.99!!!!!! A brush that retails for 6.99 and I paid 19.95! A 7 dollar Ben Nye powder (the smallest one) for 25.99! I went to this store based on a recommendation from a friend. She had a good experience. I owner was friendly but a bit pushy when it came to selling up products. That's not my issue. I feel in love with a product (a Jeffre Star liquid lipstick), so I researched his website with the intent of purchasing additional lipsticks at the Sacramento Makeup Design Studio. I noticed that the price of his lipsticks were only $18.00 online with a 5.95 flat shipping rate; the Sacramento Makeup Design Studio charged me 30.00 I sent the owner the following text: "I really love the makeup that I bought at your store. I try to support local business and try to spend my money locally whenever possible. I love the lJeffre Star lipstick so much that I checked out his website to research other colors. I was really surprised to discover that his lipsticks cost $18 when I was charged $30 at your store. I don't mind paying a coupe or few dollars extra to keep money in our community, but a $12 markup on an $18 product seems a bit much. I am not sending text because I'm mad or want a refund or money back. I just want to see small business succeed. Best of luck and thank you introducing to some awesome products " And she replied with a picture of a lipstick plus the shipping cost and two texts that read "We charge 4.70 more than his website. Let's not forget shipping and tax" and "You are welcome to buy anywhere you choose". This triggered me to reach out to Jeffree Star. I had two reps explain that Beautylish and Morphe are the only authorized US vendors of Jeffre Star Products, " There has been an increase in imitation Jeffree Star Products in the marketplace, and we have no connection to these products and are unable to verify what is in them or if they are safe. About a week after my purchase, I tried the Besame 1938 - Crimson Cream Rouge that I purchased, and it was rancid. It smelled like olive oil gone bad. By this time, I had already received the nasty texts from the owner and received the email responses from the Jeffre Star reps, so I contacted Besame Cosmetics directly. They are in the process of making a new batch of the rouge that will not be available until November. In other words, the Sacramento Makeup Design Studio sold me old product. The Besame rep was wonderful. She offered to replace the product when the new batch is available in November. She just asked that I send the rouge that I purchased to them for inspection (and I did). The short of it: is I paid 24.95+tax for a rancid product (that normally costs 22.00), and then almost 5.00 in shipping for a product that will not be replaced until November. On 9/22/2016 Dana at Jeffree Star Cosmetics sent me the following in an email in response to my Masochist purchase at Sacramento Makeup Design Studio - Workshop: "Hey! Thank you for informing our team! There has been an increase in imitation Jeffree Star Products in the marketplace, and we have no connection to these products and are unable to verify what is in them or if they are safe. We love you all so please pay close attention to the product you are buying. You can always buy our product on jeffreestarcosmetics.com." On 9/28/2016 Dana at Jeffree Star Cosmetic - Sent me the following in an email in regards to my purchase at Sacramento Makeup Design Studio - Workshop: "Hey Angelique! Without a picture of the lipstick I am unable to verify whether the product is real or not. We are 100% not affiliated with this company. Our team is looking into the issue but the lipstick is most likely imitation. I suggest only ordering from the retailers listed on our site to ensure authenticity and safety. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but we are doing the best we can to stop unlicensed retailers. I appreciate you taking the time to inform our company!" It was only a 3 minute drive so i was automatically stoked by just that alone!! They dont list their prices on jack shit and i felt sorta bad when i asked an employee dor all the prices because it was her first day so i kept apologizing but when the owner came to help, holy fucking shitballs she was not going to take no for a fucking answer!! Like, hi i cant afford your more than double markup because you are literally insane so please put down that inglot eyelid base and stop trying to sneak it onto the counter to get me to buy it. She was just SO RUDE AND PUSHY!! Nancie did an excellent job for my wedding day! I received so many compliments on the day of my wedding. I am pretty picky and wasn't quite sure what look I wanted, and Nancie listened to me during the trial and tried a number of different looks until I found the "right" one. She was timely and responsive, even coming to my parent's house on the day of my wedding to do my makeup so that I could relax. I cannot recommend her enough! read more

I visited this store yesterday and am highly disappointed because I hate to say it but I feel like I was taken advantage of and was hustled. They don't have any prices labeled on their products so I assumed they would be the same amount retailed online. As I'm shopping I felt very pressured by the lady, because she kept telling me I needed products that I didn't really need but I felt pressured to purchase them. At the register during checkout my total came out to be over $200, and I didn't think anything of it too much except that I speculated that that was a little high. Regardless, I paid for it. However as soon as I got home I checked online and realized the morphe concealers were $4.99 on morphe' website and she marked it up to $20 per concealer. The house of lash glue is retailed for $9 online and she charged me $15. She charges $24.99 per inglot pigment when they are $16 online. Not to mention when I got home, the inglot pigments looked like had been used and only one of them looked full whereas the others looked half full. The morphe brushes had a matte handle and when I came home to compare my morphe brushes, my brushes had a shiny handle. I can't help to think now, that her brushes are a knock off. I don't mind paying extra dollars to support local businesses but this just seemed like a hustle to me. Also, they don't accept refunds. Make sure to do your research before coming into this store. I've learned from my mistake and unfortunately will not shop here again. read more
