NOTICE @ Station: they're not kidding. So even if you pre-paid your monthly pass, they'll still ticket you.

The New "CONNECT Card" Has Become A Bad Joke SITREP The Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) CONNECT Card is being peddled as the newest mechanism for RT patrons to utilize for their mass transit connections. "What's that? You lost your $100 Monthly Pass? If you have a CONNECT Card, it's replaced for only $5!" If only in the end this truly evidenced a savings mechanism for the patron that carried no other inherent risks above & beyond the regular monthly pass. THE SETUP The irony is that CONNECT Card is "supposed" to be superior to the Monthly Pass. But it's decidedly NOT: * For comparison, here is the CONNECT Card that I secured as my SacRT "SEPT 2017 Monthly Pass" (that is a permanent card that can be *reloaded* for each successive month's Monthly Passes); and appearing below it is my previous regular SacRT "AUG 2017 Monthly Pass": https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sacramento-regional-transit-district-sacramento?reviewid=bwvMSxsNajdnyPpoz6grEw&select=HDDukKa5_6VCKnZB9KdoBA * The problem is that SacRT has actually created a GREATER disservice to SacRT patrons in that the CONNECT Card more Inconveniently requires users to now *tap* the card against a machine at the stations. The regular monthly passes (which will be sunseted by the end of the year) never required such inconvenient actions [And do you ever get the impression that these board members & management staff coming up with these "great ideas" don't use the Light-Rail system themselves and have no fricken clue how THEIR poor decisions drive new asinine actions for the actual users?] * Under the old school monthly pass, if a transit cop asks for proof of fare, all you have to do is show your pass, and you're good to go. There. Done. NOT SO the CONNECT Card. * If a patron is rushing to catch the Light-Rail and jumps on without *tapping* the card against the machine SOMEWHERE in the station-area (and sometimes you really have to look for them, hiding behind a ticket machine or next to a disable ramp, etc.), the transit cop still is giving the patron a $152 ticket if the card doesn't register a *tap* before entering, like they did to my colleague who boarded last week at Roseville Road station; * As the station sign says now, "Please Remember to tap your Connect Card", because if you do not, the unstated SECOND part of that statement will be "Otherwise we're you're gonna give you a $152 ticket, and we don't care that you pre-paid for your Connect Card for the month." https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sacramento-regional-transit-district-sacramento?select=a2AlbCavj5xxN6zhpFKJnw&reviewid=bwvMSxsNajdnyPpoz6grEw * And yep, my colleague got ticketed EVEN THOUGH she had paid for a "monthly pass" via the CONNECT Card - that's some "thank-you" for paying for your transit IN ADVANCE; So tell me again how adding this inherent new risk is better for the faithful, pay-in-advance-SacRT patron? MAKE CONNECT MACHINE TRULY ACCESSIBLE - ON TRAINS Never one to merely bitch without offering a solution/alternative, if the stupidity of this *tapping* is stuck in the "New SacRT", then why not make some sensible changes to make it easier for the SacRT? Something to recognize, is that irrespective of this *tapping*- idiocy above, there's just the terrible inconvenience factor of the "HOW" SacRT has setup the CONNECT machines: * If the CONNECT Card machines are going to be useful at all they need to be ON the trains - not scattered on the wrong end of a light-rail station. For example, I get on the train at the 12th Street station: (1) they have TWO CONNECT machines on the H Street side; (2) however, I approach first the I Street side of the station, and when I'm running to catch the train, I don't have time to run a block further down to H Street, and *tap*, and then run a block back to the train car I need to catch at I Street (ALWAYS a problem when you have to chase down a 2-car train on the wrong side of the block from the machines); * And what would make the MOST sense (which, under Murphy's Law, why it's not done this way) would be to make the CONNECT machines accessible at "point-of-entry", like on buses where you enter, next to the driver as you get on the bus. So why doesn't the *tap*-mechanism duplicate the successful example of the buses? The machine should be on the train cars - either on the doors or in the mid-sections of the cars if you truly want to make them useful, accessible and convenient for patrons. THE LOWDOWN You really need to think this CONNECT Card rollout better. And how about being LESS punitive against your loyal customer base and not ticket people who have pre-paid a monthly pass in advance?

Whenever I flip through the pages of Sacramento News & Review, the Sac RT full-page advert annoys me to no end. It features an attractive Asian woman and the caption reads, "The Blue Line is my Social Network Line." It goes on to state, "RT is my direct line to my scene. With Light Rail, I can text friends and tweet about the perfect spot to meet up. And, when I'm ready to head home, I can leave the driving to someone else." Aside from the obvious that RT is an inefficient and unreliable public transit system, this advertisement is a desperate and pathetic attempt to appeal to the 20-something, college educated, hipster crowd. Let me get this straight: Sac RT has limited funding; its public transit system doesn't run on-time; and its bus engines have been known for breaking down unexpectedly (Customer service advocate Sharon Cohen has admitted this happens)--so they decide to take out a mass advertising campaign to compel more people to ride their public transit system? An attractive, petite Asian woman riding light rail late at night all by herself? She better bring a can of mace.

Public transportation has a bad rap. Many people have purposely made it an inferior option for many reasons, but the team at the Sacramento Regional Transit District do they best they can do to deliver basic transportation for the community. RT is probably a bit below average for most transit agencies. We have a decent route system and a light rail core which is better than most, but service intervals and schedules are really lacking. The current system focuses mainly on the City of Sacramento with service to unincorporated Sacramento County and several suburbs. I must be blunt. Light rail has improved, but it still needs work. The trash is really unacceptable needing more people just to clean them. Buses are much better, but we still lack decent coverage at night. Many parts of the region lack any access which makes it hard to use unless you start and stop near exiting stops. Nevertheless, safety has dramatically increased with more fare enforcement and security guards. The new Connect Card system is really convenient and helps transfers between agencies. Light rail remains one of the best options to commute into downtown Sacramento for work and play. We have done a crappy job funding our transit compared to other regions and are really paying for it. Nobody likes paying taxes, but Regional Transit is still the cheapest way to get people off the freeway during peak hours and helps disadvantaged people access jobs and services. I am a 15+ year user of the system and have my issues with them, but I still ride the rails nearly every day and encourage everyone else to give them a chance too.

I noticed not that many times to choose from going to Davis from Sacramento. We missed the 2 pm. We had to wait almost an hour and half until the next one. We bought our tickets then realized no one told us where we actually get onto the train. Our friend went back in..at the ticket booth the man that helped us was very nice and very helpful. He gave the kids coloring books and pins. Finally on the train it was bumper then I remembered, moved around a lot reminded me being on boat. Can not have bags or luggage out on tables or seats. I think we got called out, but we weren't sure since it was over the load speaker. We had a small bag it had food and snacks in it. We put into the over head. We went to check out the food car. So the kids could feel what it was like to walk from car to car..the food car was mostly over priced snacks. Canned, bottled drinks and packs of chips or nuts. When we arrived in Davis. They said over the loud speaker they do not stop for to long you need to get off so get ready. We couldn't open the over head to get our bag back out. It was stuck. Other passengers helped us open it, they said you really need to pull it hard. Once off the train the Davis train station and building looked so old and run down..so sad looking compared to Sacramento station. We didn't know no one would be there to buy return tickets. But they do offer more times leaving back to Sacramento. We purchased online. We had many people asking if they were in the right place while we were waiting. Davis such a cute town seems like they would clean up the station areas.

I purchase my ticket online and it was fairly easy. The customer service was good. There was a rep in the lobby that clarified my pickup destination and offered a golf cart ride if needed. The train was full but not crowded. I was able to find a seat fairly easily. The ride was comfortable, I was able to read my book and relax. The downside was that I would've liked to wipe down my chair and table. Yes it's public transportation but it would be nice if they had Clorox wipes and sanitary stations available for passengers to wipe down their area.

However the Westside route can be a challenging depending on your work hours. They have 3 routes in the morning and 3 in the evening to and from North Natomas to downtown. The first route is fine if you're scheduled to start work before 7:00a and end your day before 4:00p. The second route will get you to work before 8:00a and the 3rd route before 9:00a. HOWEVER, for the 2nd route, if you're not on one of the first stops, you will be standing for the whole ride. A few passengers have tried to email TMA about the situation and did receive a response that they were in the process of renegotiation of the contract. It seems the considerate solution in the interim would be to send a "shadow" bus until contacts are done. With this route only having 3 chances to get home, not everyone can get off work to catch the first route home and then last route is not until 6p, causing the second route home, standing room only by the time it still has 3 more pick ups before getting on the freeway to head back to North Natomas, unlike the Eastside routes which have 4. I'm starting to feel like it's unsafe for the amount of passengers that are standing. And today didn't make it any better with the AC not working and then the bus overheats halfway home. With so much traffic on the freeway, we knew it would take longer to wait for the back up bus, than to walk home. I walked 3 miles in heels, so definitely got my steps in. I'm just not sure if TMA is taking heed to our emails or ignoring them, but I'm going to take a break from riding and re-evaluate at a later time.
