We were really fortunate to find our birth doula (who we love!), but the other 2 candidates were not very impressive. The first doula missed our appointment with no follow-up communication. We were initially confused and thought she was the coordinator for BB, because she only communicated by text. The actual meeting was just by telephone so there was no face-to-face interaction, which felt strange. We could've easily FaceTimed or Zoomed. So communication and reliability were not great. The second doula abruptly canceled our half-hour appointment when we were 10 minutes late for a 30-minute appointment due to my husband wrapping up a Zoom meeting. During our appointment time, she was responding to my emails (in which I apologized for being late), but insisted she could no longer meet with us. I thought this was a really bad sign about what she would be like to work with - labor and delivery is rarely precisely timed and some flexibility is needed. In addition, her email said that she lives in Portola Valley, but we live Berkeley (also where Brilliant Births is located). This also struck me as strange, because it would take 1.5 hours for her to arrive to meet us at the hospital, which is not ideal.

Before giving birth, we had been looking for a doula but were worried we wouldn't find the right person because Kaiser didn't have a large variety of doulas available. While we were at Kaiser for our hospital tour, we happened to meet Cristina in the waiting room. She started sharing her own birth experience with us and explaining what a doula does not only during labor, but throughout pregnancy and even after you bring your baby home. From that first conversation, we immediately felt comfortable with her and knew there was something special about her. Cristina became such an important part of our birth experience. Before labor, she helped us understand and put together our birth plan, showed us different stretches and techniques to prepare for labor, and connected us with resources available through Kaiser, including meal programs and information about breast pumps. When labor finally came, Cristina truly showed us how dedicated she is. We left our house around 2:00 a.m. because the contractions had become much stronger. When we arrived at the hospital, I was already 8 cm dilated. We immediately called Cristina, and even though it was around 3:00 in the morning, she was at the hospital within about 10 minutes, ready to support us. She stayed right by our side through everything. She helped with breathing techniques, pushing, positioning, and keeping us calm and comfortable during an extremely intense experience. She made sure the nurses understood our birth plan and advocated for everything that was important to us. We wanted a completely natural birth, had specific wishes regarding which vaccinations we wanted for our son, wanted delayed cord clamping, and did not want the vernix immediately wiped off our baby. Cristina made sure our voices were heard and our wishes were understood and respected. But what makes Cristina so special to us goes far beyond everything she did as our doula. Somewhere along this journey, she stopped feeling like just our doula and became family. We love and appreciate Cristina more than we could ever put into words. She was there for us during one of the biggest, most emotional, and most important moments of our lives. The love, care, support, and dedication she showed our family is something we will never forget. Our son, Atticus, now has an amazing Tía Cristina, and that is exactly how we see her as family. We feel incredibly blessed that a simple, unexpected conversation in a Kaiser waiting room brought someone into our lives who would become such an important part of our family's story. Cristina, thank you for being there for us, for advocating for us, for comforting us, for supporting us, and most importantly, for loving and caring for our family. You didn't just help us welcome our son into this world you became part of his life and part of our family. We couldn't recommend Cristina enough. If you're looking for someone who will truly care about you and your family, stand beside you through every moment, and treat your birth experience as something just as important to her as it is to you, Cristina is that person. We love you, Tía Cristina, and we will forever be grateful that life brought you into our family's lives. With love and appreciation, Juan, Mariela & Atticus

Then, I seen stuff about Doula which mind you, I had no idea what it meant. I started reading what a Doula was & I said to myself. Let me give her a call so I did. Just by speaking with her she gave me peace & loved her already without even knowing her. She explained everything to me and I just felt it in my heart that she had to be my Doula & Placenta Encapsulation person. I can't put into words of how thankful & blessed I feel with her! God literally placed her on my path because without her I don't know what I would've done! From being pregnant, birth and after birth she was there! She always checked up on me through phone calls/txts, always giving me advice. Always made me feel heard. She even created a beautiful template birth plan for me. Exactly what I had told her! & during labor, ohhh sheee definitely made sure it was followed! During labor she was there for me 24/7 never left my side. She did absolutely everything in her hands that she could for me to be as comfortable and as peaceful as I can. She did counter pressure/massages during every contraction. She even brought me a comb to squeeze! & trust me that thing helps during those contractions! & Guess what she also brought! A Fiber Optic Star Ceiling & Relaxing Aromatherapy Diffuser(: I LOVED IT! She changed me into all the positions you can think of and made sure I was okay with them and comfortable. She even asked the nurses/drs for some tools that I can use that I didn't even know existed. For Ex: Cubs Seat, that thing was amazing! It was super comfortable! I can literally keep going lol All I can say is, I am so happy I followed my gut/heart/intuition! If I ever get pregnant again she will FOREVER & ALWAYS BE MY ONE AND ONLY DOULA AND PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION GIRLY THANK YOU SO MUCH CRISTINA FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR ME I WILL FOREVER CHOOSE YOU

While Stork and Sprout does have some excellent doulas on its team who provided great support and coaching, my experience with the agency's leadership was overwhelmingly negative. We had a particularly difficult time with Brittany. She demonstrated a pattern of manipulation, gaslighting, and lying, both to us and, from what I understand, to her own employees. Our contract promised consistent coverage, but the scheduling was erratic and communication was poor. We were left to wonder many nights if we would have support, and for several weeks, we only received 1 to 2 days of support instead of the 6 to 7 we paid for. When we requested a refund for the services not provided, Brittany refused and even fought our bank with out-of-context emails and more lies. She claims she "offered a refund" but is even today refusing to honor it as she says in the response. The lack of professionalism extended to some of the staff as well; one sick doula was sent to our home and intentionally caused our newborn physical pain. Brittany treated us like we were the difficult ones and responded with empathy-less chatGPT emails to manage the situation. We were also led to believe we would have one primary doula with a backup, but over the course of our service, we had seven different doulas come to our home. This complete lack of continuity made an already difficult period even more stressful. Based on my experience, I would advise new parents to skip Stork and Sprout and work directly with an independent doula. You will not only save the 30-40% extra fee the agency charges for scheduling, but you will also avoid the toxic and difficult management. This experience is unacceptable for a service that costs tens of thousands of dollars and demands payment upfront months ahead of providing the service. We were not able to switch easily due to the inflexible Carrot reimbursement process through the employer.

Having midwives who cared, who saw me & had my best interest in the process and outcome. My experience with both Angela & Kathryn was truly a pleasant one. I am happy to have found them. Very down to earth mamas themselves. Passionate about what they do to serve women through their whole pregnancy journey. During labor I was able to experience how important it is to have midwifery care. At one point just having Kathryn's presence during those intense contractions was such a relief. To know they were walking this with me. Their knowledge and experience were a tremendous help in my journey. It's definitely at a different level than I've experienced before. Just having any concern be truly heard, the conversations were up-lifting. Never felt rushed or dismissed. I felt safe physically as well. I just loved being taken care of by Angela & Kathryn. My mind set coming in was I wanted to experience a more wholesome if I can say that... a wholesome labor experience. One where my wishes and needs were heard and followed through. Angela & Kathryn were great at giving me my options, letting me know the risks, the pros, the cons, etc. and being knowledgeable and understanding. Oh I want every pregnant mama friend to know they can go through pregnancy & delivery without fear. Whether that's at home or hospital with the right midwives/ doulas with you. That this special time is worth making the choice to hire them. I wish I would have hired them sooner to be able to have them since the beginning of my pregnancy! I love that they continue to invest and keep learning to better serve. They both have something to offer and together they make the perfect duo. ----

Every time I met Angela was important to me, it was like meeting with an old friend or sister. I was especially thankful for the advice for the breastfeeding book she recommended-that was life-changing. My time in the hospital visits were stressful and traumatic, so, the hands-on care that was provided was a breath of fresh air. I felt heard and seen. Even when I had to go to the hospital, Angela was an advocate by my side. Her advice and visits during the postpartum phase were wonderful as well. I felt like Angela took the time to care for me AND my baby. With midwifery care, the baby is a patient as well. There is less unnecessary poking and prodding and much more love and attention. With the standard care given by doctors, they are often cold and even demeaning. They look at things backwards and always act as if you or your baby is sick and dying until proven otherwise. I wasn't able to have a home birth, but still had a vbac in the hospital, I didn't give up and I found strength and resilience that I didn't have previously. I was able to really listen to my body and do what I and baby needed.

Redwood doulas was responsive to help us get another interim doula right away. Doula Thais stepped in to help us super last minute. She was extremely professional and helpful. We were triple feeding when we first got back from the hospital, so doula Thais would every three hours bring me the baby, then bottle feed her while I pumped, then clean all the bottle and part pumps. When she left in the morning all of the bottle and pump parts were cleaned and organized and ready for the next day. She listened and helped us figure out our game plan for the nights. She was very communicative about her availability and it was great she was able to help on such short notice. We only had her for a few nights but would definitely recommend her to anyone considering her, she even followed up asking about our baby and how she was doing weeks later! Doula Suely was the other doula we worked with. We worked with Sue for about 7 weeks and she was so critical for helping us get peace and sleep. She was great and easy to work with and schedule shifts for the week. She went along with whatever schedule and plan we wanted for the night. But when we were uncertain about something, or wanted advice for reflux and spit up she was extremely helpful with her advice. You could tell the love and care she had for our baby! It's nerve wracking handing your baby over to someone for the entire night but it was so easy to trust Sue. She helped us get some extremely critical sleep and always ensured my pump parts and the bottles were clean in the morning. We ended up extending our contract by three weeks because Sue's help was so critical to our family. I can't recommend Sue enough!!

She was a great help in setting up the initial meetings with doulas who she thought would be a good match for us and figuring out schedules and such. During a postpartum call, she was so kind and empathetic. I just can't say thank you enough to her for her kindness. Doula Thais was our birth doula and was amazing in every way. She was incredibly supportive to both my husband and I, helping us navigate the unknowns pre-birth, during labor, and afterward. I had some medical issues crop up that required an extended postpartum stay and she was so so kind and continued to reach out and check in on me, which meant SO much to me. We also did a baby wearing session with her and that helped both of us feel more comfortable that we were wearing our baby correctly (those darn things have so many darn straps and snaps and doodads, lol). Regarding postpartum night support, we had initially gone with a doula (who ran her own business) that we hired outside of Redwood Doulas. Within two weeks, we were desperately looking for other help as this private-doula-for-hire was just not jamming well with us. We reached out to Kymberlie and she was able to help us do some trials until we found a doula we matched well with. We were able to snag a couple weeks with Doula Ivette and we loved working with her just as much as we did with Doula Thais! Doula Ivette came in the first night and was able to identify that our baby was gassy and helped show us different techniques on how to de-gas her! We continued using those techniques for the next few months while our baby's digestive system was sorting itself out. We weren't able to continue with Redwood Doulas after a few weeks as we had contacted them too late and we weren't able to find continuity of care with just one doula. For this reason, we decided to hire another private-doula-for-hire outside of Redwood Doulas and similar to our first experience doing this, this private-doula-for-hire just was not as professional as the doulas from Redwood Doulas. I bring this up to highlight that our experience with Redwood Doulas was truly exceptional. I contacted and spoke with A LOT of doulas and different agencies around the bay area and the team at Redwood Doulas was my favorite to work with. They were always ON TIME! Which is like SO FREAKING KEY when you're a first time parent holding a baby who has been screaming their head off for hours hours and nothing you do is working and you need a break from that damn yoga ball bouncing you've been doing! Lol. When my private-for-hire-doula would come late, the intense baby screams tears at you every additional minute you're waiting. But Redwood Doulas never did this to us. They were always on time- thank. goodness. Lol. So all in all, work with them!! They're awesome. (Open to DM's if anyone has questions, etc!)

After attending a childbirth preparation class at my hospital less than two months before my due date, I began to worry about how unprepared I was and became anxious when thinking about childbirth and the pain associated with it. After meeting with Teri and Susan, we immediately knew that having a doula with us was something we needed. My due date was approaching rapidly, but we were able to do a total of three childbirth education classes, one group class in Modesto and two in home classes. I felt more and more assured after each class. By the end of the third class my anxiety had been replaced by confidence. Teri came to our house the morning that I went into labor and assisted me through each contraction as I labored at home. Still by my side in the delivery room, she used acupressure and aromatherapy which helped tremendously even during the most intense contractions. Back at home with a brand new baby, the postpartum doula services with Jennifer and Susan were exceedingly helpful for us. Other people might receive the same exact service but rate it 4 or 5 stars. I felt that the postpartum doula, Susan, could have been more open and supportive of my personal parenting style and desires, but it seemed like she thought there was one good way of parenting an 8-week old baby - the rigid schedule your baby for your convenience as soon as possible way, which isn't my philosophy but I know tons of people do want that. I also thought she needed to take more care and consideration regarding her baby wearing advice because although babies bodies are very flexible, there are safety concerns especially regarding their hips, neck, and nose that she did not properly address when telling me not to over think placing my baby in my ring sling.
