This review is for Gaytha and a cover-up tattoo she gave me. Let's start with the history and emotional baggage around my need for a cover-up tattoo. When I was 14, I did my own tattoo at home; it was god-awful. At 17, I had a cover-up tattoo done. Originally, I was satisfied with it; but as time grew on, I hated the tattoo so much I would forget that I had one until someone would ask, "What is that?" I came to Sacred Rose because whenever I'd see a stranger with decent ink, I'd ask them where they got it done. Most of the time, they had their tattoos done at Sacred Rose. So I decided to give them a try. The front desk woman was very helpful; she told me that Gaytha is very skilled at cover-ups, and would deliver what I wanted. I had a consultation with Gaytha, and she sent me a few sketches. I was feeling anxious; the last thing I needed was a third cover-up that I hated. I didn't like the first one, and I requested that some things be tweaked to my liking in the second sketch. (Any good tattoo artist will be patient until you are comfortable with what you want!!) Gaytha is an extremely laid back gal and she is confident in her work. Given the level of anxiety I had around getting this tattoo, her level of calm was almost off-putting; however, Gaytha definitely exudes confidence. Tattoo was scheduled for 9/21/13. I decided to bring a friend who has way more tattoos than I to help me vibe out the situation. We decided it was go time; the sketch looked great! We made a few more adjustments to the sketch in the shop and she put the outline on my ankle. As the tattoo progressed my friend reassured me that it was really starting to look dope. Told him my idea and said he has time on wed for me to email him any specs and he would draw it up and have it ready. I sent him some info of what I wanted and told him to do his magic and WOW what he came up with is truly amazing. I am so pleased with the outcome. So I'd been wanting another tattoo, something really meaningful. I have three smaller ones ankle, back, and top of foot. All perfectly fine one done a long time ago in Oakley, and the other two at Zebra's in Berkeley. But this piece in my mind was going to be bigger and I had always used males, and I was looking for more of a feminine touch to the artwork. Plus I had multiple idea's in my head of what I wanted to convey but really needed help, I came in with a few designs I found on the Internet and some other artwork in hand and Amy hooked me up. I guess I should back up here, first I looked at different tattoo parlors here on yelp in the Berkeley/SF area. When I found Sacred Rose and looked at all the tattoo artists I was really drawn to Amy's work. I think it was September when I dropped to check out the place, found out Amy had quite the waiting list but figured it give me more time and added my name. Got a call in December for a January consultation, and also set up the appt. too. Since it be another month to get in. So it took about 5 months, but I'd say totally worth the wait! Amy spent a half hour with me on the consult to get my concept more organized. Also I had too much verbage so I had to pick just one sentence from the song I wanted, she helped me understand the space issue. And I had really wanted my girls names tattooed on me too so we decided to do each inside wrist with each girls name in a beautiful font. Yeah, Yeah I walked out with three tattoos....but the main tattoo is amazing and I keep looking in the mirror when I get the chance to check it out. I can't wait till it's warmer and can wear a tank so people can see it. Amy was professional and took time with me and made me feel comfortable and not rushed. I just wanted to give a shout out to Mondo at Sacred Rose! I came in today, after the heart wrenching experience of having to put my cat of 19 years to sleep earlier in the day. I asked if they did walk ins, because I wanted to get my cat's paw print tattooed on my wrist in remembrance, and as my own personal way of grieving. Mondo was instantly very helpful and agreed to do it on the spot, and said he had a cat of his own. Came into this place about a week ago, and while my boyfriend got tattooed I talked to Uncle Tim about an idea I had. He loved it! Over the next week he drew up my tattoo, and I couldn't have been more happy. He listened to everything I said, as far as detailed, and nailed it on the head! 4 hours later she was on my skin, and I couldn't be happier. Mondo was great at doing my first tattoo on my spine! I just got three Chinese characters done (my chinese name) and I was super freaked out since it was my first tattoo and it was on my spine. He calmed me down by letting my sailor mouth go off, talking to me about his past experiences, and I was totally fine through the 15 minutes of tattooing. He did exactly what I wanted and asked for. Zack did my first tattoo for me and he was great! After 48 years on the planet, I was finally ready. I wanted a good image done by a good artist. This is on my body forever now! I spent a lot of time looking at images. Then I spent a lot of time looking at artists work. I liked Zack's work, so I went in to meet him. He was friendly and open-minded. He was clear from the start that this is my tattoo and I have the final say on artwork, placement, etc. And he offered excellent suggestions from an artistic point of view of ways to tweak the image that I ultimately chose. I went back a week later, having chosen my image. We talked about placement, size and background. He made a sketch while I waited and added a few elements as suggestions. We scheduled a time about a week later to get the work done. When I arrived for my tattoo we went over the sketch one more time. There were a few elements that I didn't like and he was happy to remove them. He really kept his ego out of it. He put the stencil on my arm and I didn't like the initial placement. He was patient and happy to remove it and adjust the placement. Zack is really clear that his work is going permanently on my body and that I need to be certain that I like what I am getting. He understands that this is a craft that takes skill and care. Not just anyone can do this. He is an excellent artist and did a great job! He was pleasant to chat with me while he worked. And he was also content to work in silence when I didn't feel like talking. I also like the fact that he is a good artist who was available. Some good artists are booked months (or even years) in advance. My advice. Do your research. Find the right image for you. Find the right artist for you. If you like Zack's artwork, I highly recommend him. read more

I walked in without knowing what I wanted to get. I just know I was feening for some ink. The kid at the counter introduced me to K.C. After a few minutes of me mumbling about what I thought I wanted, KC told me to come back in about an hour. I went back and KC had an idea but the eagle was a regular eagle. Wrong!!! I told him that everyone has regular eagles. I want something different. This is what he came up with and it was Perfect!!! The tattoo took a total 9 of hours to complete (6 the 1st visit / 3 the second). The shop is very clean and KC was a true professional. Like the dandelions on my front lawn, tattoo shops are popping up all over the damn place...and it would appear as though tattoo artists are the new real estate agents; Everybody thinks they can do it. It's just not so. When it comes to big purchases or, oh I don't know, art that's going to be on your body for the rest of your life, it's kinda important to get somebody who knows what the hell they're doing. That's why you should go here. Sacred Rose is an institution that's been around for almost 15 years now. They most definitely are not in the fly-by-night category. Even more important are the artists who work there. They're not fresh-outta-art-school hacks. They're pros. My first experience here was nothing but awesome. I worked with Karen from start to finish after a very high recommendation from a friend. (He basically said he'd break my arm if I went to see anyone else.) Within just a few weeks of my initial phone call, I had a consultation set up. A week and a half after that I had lightning bolts on my arms. And there was much rejoicing. Seriously. Don't get sucked in by somebody working out of their garage who can "do it cheaper." When you pay average prices you get average work from average artists. Econ 101. It's just that simple. Go here. Trey. Trey Barnett. You guys. I came in last week with an idea and a crappy print of a long-adored illustration. I met Trey, told him what I wanted and made an appointment for a few days later to get the tattoo. When I came in on T-Day, the sketch he came up with was beyond gorgeous. He totally captured what I wanted and suggested a few things that made it even better. Once he got everything sketched up and accommodated my weirdly specific requests, (Seriously, though, I gave him a jumble of things that didn't really make sense. I actually said, "I want the hair all line-y." and he drew exactly what I was thinking. Like a champ.) he set to work on my piece. It took a little under two hours and it is so stupid beautiful. Can I give this place more than five stars? How about Mondo, can I give him more than five stars? I would if I could. I walked in there a few months back to talk about a very simple tattoo of a 45 spindle I wanted on my wrist. I was greeted by a smiling Mondo, who made me feel incredibly welcomed, even though I was only going to spend about $60 on this small piece. He made me feel comfortable and as important as someone getting a full back tattoo, who would be spending a whole hell of a lot more than me that day. I came back a few weeks later for a larger piece, and again Mondo made me feel very relaxed and welcomed. I spoke to him about a larger shoulder piece I have been wanting for many years, a microphone on a surreal background. He told me he doesn't look at other tattoos for inspiration, but would look at real microphones to get create the design. Like me, he is a fan of Dali, so it came as no surprise that the design he had in mind for me included a desert landscape background. I spent about three hours with him last week while he worked his magic. We talked music, films, comics and more for the duration of the time, and I left absolutely thrilled for the finished piece. We're already planning on getting together again so he can connect the mic cord to another piece he did which is lower on my forearm. Do not walk to Sacred Rose. RUN! The place is incredibly welcoming, clean, bright, and happy to discuss all of your ideas. Personally, I was excited to allow Mondo as much creative control as I did. After reading many reviews, I flew cross country to get my tattoo here. I am happy to say that they did not disappoint. I used to live in the bay area and heard about Sacred Tattoo through Yelp and word of mouth. I kept putting off my tattoo until one day, I had to move cross country and had to fly back just to get it. Silly me. I was greeted by Daniel Herlihy who was extremely nice and helpful. I came in with a tattoo that was about the size of a large postage stamp and he straight up told me that it wouldn't look good unless I got it bigger, much bigger. Although that wasn't my original intention, I must say, I'm REALLY glad I listened to him. It looked much better, much larger. Unfortunately, my time was limited and Daniel couldn't do my tattoo during any of the times I was available. So, he recommended Shotsie. After looking at Shotsie's portfolio and Daniel assuring me that Shotsie was great and had been in the industry for 30+ years, I felt more comfortable about having him do it. Let me just say that Shotsie did a phenomenal job. The man is a true professional and once he was done with my tattoo it made me realize how incompetent my last tattoo artist was. I wanted an old school etching and that's exactly what he gave me. I got the tattoo on my inner bicep (the part facing my ribs), which is not an easy area to get a tattoo. He made it a pretty painless experience as far as tattoos go and I'm really happy with the results. Just an FYI: They have a $100 minimum. read more

After my last ever final of my undergrad career, I stopped by to see if I could get a quick appointment for a tattoo that would commemorate my time at Cal. Mark was standing at the counter, greeted me, and asked what I was looking for. When I told him I wanted a Disney cartoon style tattoo in color, he told me that he was a comic book artist and that he'd be able to draw up my idea. This couldn't be any more perfect. I gave him print outs of the characters I wanted, let him know what I wanted and he said he could do it. I let him know the one downfall--I'd need an appointment pretty quick since we were moving out of state the beginning of June. No worries, he had openings! My appointment was set for the very next day after my department commencement. I showed up on time--should've showed up earlier because I forgot color takes a bit to set up for, but I was driving in from Fairfield and the traffic Gods were against me despite my appointment being at 12:30pm. His drawing was so perfect. I seriously could not have imagined it any better than what he did. Bodé placed the stencil and joked about how it would hurt being that I was getting it on my inner bicep. Great. I love how everyone warned me DAY OF. Yea, that area is not nice at all.
