It was very early and I had a business appointment coming up, so my choices were limited. I spoke to an unfriendly dispatcher or receptionist and was quoted 1 hour and $140. I felt $140 was a bit steep but I haven't needed a tow in a while and didn't have time to shop around. After an hour and 10 minutes I called back to see where the truck was. I was told it should be about 20 minutes more. When they finally got my car to the shop, they tried to upcharge me $10 for using a debit card. The same card they asked for over the phone when they gave me the quote. When I objected, the driver said they always charge $10 extra for cards. I pointed out this charge was never disclosed and it's illegal to charge someone a fee after the fact if it wasn't disclosed. The driver said it wasn't his problem so I called the company back and the guy that answered also insisted they were going to charge me the $10. He was rude and tried to talk over me. I told them that if the charge on my card is over $140, I will dispute it through my card company, and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I just looked at my account, and sure enough, they overcharged me.
