well, rest stops are more common in Michigan, which is where I'm from than Texas, but I have to say we had to stop here and I'm glad we did. It's very clean and plenty of parking and a nice place to relax. There's also the local cat down in the bushes so if you have some cat food or something, you can feed him just look for him, I would say his name could be Oscar. I also saw a local raccoon where some of the passer buyers had left food. But it's pretty straightforward here, good place to throw away garbage and to use the bathroom, which was clean. It wasn't too crowded and kind of a nice peaceful oasis away from the busy or noisy traffic. read more

This rest area was incredibly easy to visit as it was right off the interstate. My mom was surprised at how much there was to offer at a rest area in comparison to the rest stops of yester-year. After utilizing the restrooms, we walked around the beautifully kept grounds and read the corresponding signage. Then it was back on the road again. James Taylor White Safety Rest Area... doesn't matter what you call it I have never felt less safe in my entire adult life: it's about midnight here and I am witness to an odd assortment of vehicles including a sketchy hand lettered theo-political statement van, and an abandoned looking car full up with clothes and stuff and all the windows down next to another automobile of uncertain ownership and operability. add a couple of no-masketeers picnicking in the main building and a guy walking what looked like a mixed breed coyote... I've been in plenty of places during the last half-century and this is not one of them. read more

Like other reviewers have stated I believe once the sun sets this place morphs into a completely different rest area and the safety part of the name becomes less relevant. I arrived around midnight and parked in a poorly lit parking lot in front of the main building. I did see a number of people off in the distance and they all looked like silhouettes or maybe even shadow people, the well lit interior of the building was empty . Even though I can more than handle myself in less desirable situations I too was second guessing my decision to exit my vehicle and walk to the amenities. As I made my way to the doors I could hear talking in the distance and I could see a cigarette ember illuminate the darkness as it was inhaled followed by plumes of dense smoke. I must say this place is a little eerily but still I decided to take a walk across the planked walkways connecting the buildings, some of the dangers here are clearly identified with colored precise signage and some may not be so I decided to stay on the artificial paths and continued to stretch my legs from the drive. After a short walk in the dimly lit public areas I decided to go back inside to grab a cold bottle of water before getting back on the road, the vending machine was filled with products which were unfortunately all warm it was a little disappointing but again there was a sign stating the status of the machine so I didn't waste any currency and after looking around I realized there were no other options so I made my way back to the parking lot. I noticed several cars had arrived since I pulled in although I hadn't seen any others enter the building I figured they were just here to catch a nap, as I walked towards my rental I noticed all the cars were unoccupied which seemed a little strange so I kept my head on a swivel as I activated my key fob, the car's parking lights provided enough light for me to confidently make my way to the driver's door and entered without any issues although I felt my pulse quicken followed by a sense of relief. As I turned out a shadow appeared, it's stride quickened as my headlamps raked the pavement in front of me I held the brake for a moment as it approached the curb, as it closed the distance I could see it carried something as it continued walking towards the trash dispenser and then with the accuracy of a laser the bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken hit the receptacle and disappeared as she yelled at her teenage kids to go inside and wash their hands, fortunately the restrooms were immaculate ... read more

Very nice rest area with a cute little playground for the kids. Inside is very nice with some vending machines and even a little bit of Texas history. Bathrooms don't have a lot of stalls but when we were there, there was no wait. It was very clean. No paper towels only air dryers. Would definitely stop here if you have a need! read more

Beautiful, clean rest area for the family. This rest stop is hidden among the trees and has lovely walking paths throughout the grounds that take you to a variety of different spots, such as: pavilions with picnic tables, children's playground, restrooms, indoor info center and more restrooms (must wear a mask and no dogs allowed inside)-- just to name a few. The women's restrooms were clean and air conditioned. There's no baby changing table in the women's restroom, however, there is a family restroom next door. There are signs that say "beware of snakes," but what you should really beware of are the giant spiders hanging out among the trees and the pavilion! They're minding their own business and they're really cool to look at, but I couldn't imagine running into one of their webs by accident!! read more

This is a nice rest stop for cars and trucks between Houston and Beaumont. It looks new and the lobby, bathrooms and outdoor areas are all kept clean and fresh. The rest area is shielded by trees from traffic passing on I 10 which adds to the scenery and helps with the noise pollution. I would give a 4 if it only had more car parking. It's possible you could drive in and not be able to park. Other than that, I recommend stopping here if you need to. read more

Texas has some really nice rest areas on the I--10. This one was charming. Covered raised walkways around the trees. Plenty of grassy areas for Dogs around the perimeter. Clean spacious bathrooms in buildings that look like houses. Lots of tables in covered pergola areas. Nice! read more

I was impressed with the cleanliness and design of this rest stop. The ladies' room was very attractive and clean. It would have preferred if they had a small cafe in addition to the vending machines, but other than that it was a very nice stop. There is a nature walkway and a small playground. The BEST place for a stop! This little gem is on the Eastbound side of I-10 between Houston and Beaumont. It is just about halfway between the two cities. This place is a very modern and is a clean place to stop & take a look around. It is air conditioned inside. There are displays to look at and places to sit. They have a plug in for you to charge your electronic devices. The Women's Restroom has ample room for a wheelchair to access. I especially love the tile mural in the restroom. Such a nice touch! Outside, there is a neat fenced in playground for the little ones to use up some energy with little fear of them running off. They will be safe from the vehicles coming and going while they play. There are also paths for taking walks around the area. The surrounding area is so lush and green and a serene place to take a nature walk. Any traveler passing through this part of Texas should stop here and take a look, at the very least! read more

Yes, I'm reviewing a rest stop. More accurately called the Chambers County Safety Rest Area, I prefer to call it the Best Little Outhouse in Texas. While passionate lovers of Buc-ee's might disagree, JTW might be the Best Little Outhouse in the U.S.A. At Milepost 815 on Interstate 10, on the long road somewhere betwixt Houston and Beaumont, is a much-needed rest area. Hell, I'm not going to even call it a rest stop ... it's more like an oasis: the lobby is filled with the cool breeze of air conditioning; a big picnic area; a really spiffy playground; a beautiful historical marker and plaque commemorating James Taylor White; covered porches; separate truck and car parking areas; high-quality vending machines; an interactive historical display; and two ... count 'em two ... sets of men's and women's bathrooms, clean and mural-covered. In the end, calling it a "Safety Rest Area" isn't lip service. You can't help leaving refreshed and sharper as you leave again for the open road. read more

Yesterday I went to the swankiest rest stop I've ever seen, and I just had to do something I didn't think I'd ever do: Write a Yelp review of a rest stop. My family and I were traveling to Southeast Texas and already left Baytown heading toward Beaumont. We wanted to switch drivers and, well, pee, so we saw a sign for a Rest Stop at Exit 814 Eastbound on I-10. We saw a beautiful glass building with trails around, a great playground, and plenty of places to take your dog out. The inside had some beautiful tile work that looked more like a hotel or restaurant than what I think of as rest stops (aka no toilet paper, mysterious smells, sticky floors). My phone was dead, so I don't have pics but this had the trifecta: (1) clean and SUPER NICE restrooms, (2) cold drinks and snacks in a vending machine, and (3) outside space for pets and families. I'll add a 4th: There was a nice place to hang out inside, charge your devices, eat a lunch in the A/C. This place is legit. Check it out. read more

This is my first time giving a review on a rest stop. First of all it's covered so you don't need to worry about the elements when you're using the bathroom. It also has a police officer inside. Very nice old man. The bathrooms are clean if you need to charge your devices there are charging stations inside. If you have children there is a little playground outside for them to play in. If I ever do a road trip again I will be sure to stop by at this rest stop. read more

I've always stopped at this rest area because it was so clean - eastbound AND westbound. The last time I stopped Westbound, the stench of urine was nauseating. This is a very nice and clean rest stop area for travelers. It is located in Hankamer, TX in between Beaumont. To find you'll have to take the exit for rest area. Once you pull up you will see how modern and laid back this area is. It isn't like the standard rest stop: plantation looking house, hot non-air conditioning restroom, caged up vending, or rock paved trail--NOPE! This area is very beautiful inside and outside. It has restrooms at two locations. The other restrooms are located near the jungle gym for kids and covered roof area. You would have to follow either of the trails to get to. It has men, women, and a family restroom. Inside the tourist building is where the other restroom are. The women restroom was vividly designed with mosaic glass squares. The image was a tropical bird on a branch. The stall doors all swung open once you handle them. The spring release is strong, so even if you forget to close it. The door is close automatically. In the lobby area is table and chairs to chill on. The table is intact with a plug station which is pretty neat. There is an area of history about the San Jacinto monument behind and glass display case. A vending machine area, a map of TX and Tdot infomation. Outside trails are lined with wooden walkway. Along the walkway are informational read plaques about the wildlife. Two signs read: watch out for snakes and poison ivy. The trails are a little feets off the ground. It leads from every direction from cars and big rig parking. This is truly a delightful and enchalanting place to stop, rest, play, or use the facilities. Pets aren't welcome inside, but here are welcome on the trails. read more

Nice clean area to stop and use the bathroom, have a meal and just relax before moving on to the next destination. The building had great AC so it was nice to get away from the Texans heat and just enjoy the cool air. I love the various picnic areas it's semi private with lots of greenery and foliage. Just be aware of mosquitoes and bugs. It would probably be a good idea to use OFF while outdoors if you plan to have a picnic outdoors. read more

This has to be the CLEANEST rest stop on I-10. I have traveled on I-10 practically from start to finish - from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL. Most of the clean rest stops are in AZ, NM and TX, but this one is clearly the best. There are multiple flat screens inside that outline Texas' rich history, along with a few brochures. There is a table inside (which is air conditioned) that has an outlet to charge your phone/computer. There is an outdoor playground to take your children, should they need to burn off some energy (great on long cross country trips). Plenty of covered seating areas to have a family picnic. And, there are also copious amounts of cameras, including those pointed at the family and women's restrooms, so you at least feel safe here, unlike California, which has some of the WORST rest stops in the country. read more

After a long day (seventeen hour drive + quick lunch and quick stops for gas purchases ) we stopped here and I got so pleasantly surprised by the entire concept of the approach to the Architectural planning as well as the planning of the surroundings .. Designed with utmost sence for the break/rest. Modern architectural design of a very spacious and what I can only imagine (since we stopped at night) naturally beautifully illuminated place (the walls of the building are constructed of steel and glass) ..... Two beautiful metal sculptures (indicating natural surroundings) on each side of the entry of each restroom. Phone charging stations, water fountains, multiple vending machines, info screens... Absolutely gorgeous mosaic inside the lady's restroom area, beautifully designed doors of the restroom. Lady's restrooms were soptless when my family and I arrived. Beautifuly planned garden with stylish benches ... Plenty of parking space too. read more

Believe it or not, there aren't a lot of stops on I-10 between Houston and Beaumont. And sometimes, the call of nature is impossible to ignore. Fortunately, nature's call and the signs warning of an upcoming rest area happened to coincide. The rest area is well off the main highway and is sheltered by a bunch of trees. The main building is a spotlessly clean, modern, air conditioned facility with a variety of vending machines as well. I can only speak to the men's "facilities," but it was comfortable, clean, and a welcome option on a fairly open stretch of road. Well done, TxDOT! read more

Oh my I stopped there one night to use the restroom on my way to Houston and the place had 4 raccoons and 5 cats running all over the parking lot. I was terrified to get out of my vehicle and when I did I hurried back before I even got 4 feet away because two raccoons jumped out the garage can. While traveling east on Rt 10 from Houston, TX, this rest area was a god send. Our RV had gotten very hot in the living area. Our Main Coon cat got over heated to the point we thought we'd loose him due to heat exhaustion. This rest area had air conditioned rest rooms with a tile flat counter in the family room. We doused our cat with water and laid him down on the cool tiles. After awhile he revived, and was back to his old self again. This is a beautiful rest area, well worth the stop to see all it has to offer. read more
