The deli sucks but checker Chris is outstanding. Went in to get some groceries for an outdoor class I was attending the next two days. Headed to the deli for cold cuts and was next in line as a young black dude helped a customer and a large black man (a manager) spoke to him and a female worker. The young man handed the patron in front of me their order. He looked me straight in the eye as I approached to tell him what I wanted and without a word- he TURNED AND WALKED AWAY! He went to a sink in the rear of the deli and started washing something. The manager clown kept bumping his gums and the girl responded and the (now) dish washer nodded. I however, remained unacknowledged. After the manager stopped quacking, the girl finally came up to me and asked my order only to be interrupted by the buffoon manager. It took me close to 10 minutes to get a few slices of turkey!!! Beyond unacceptable. I was literally constructing a one star Yelp review in my mind as I prepared to pay for my selections. I unloaded my basket and was greeted by an effusively friendly employee, Chris. He asked if I found everything I needed and rather than complaining about the idiots in the deli I asked where to grab a steak in town. Chris rattled off a couple of his favourite spots describing the pros and cons of each. He then asked another checker who also opined. I took Chris' advice and went to the PIEDMONT STEAK HOUSE and it was just how he described it, expensive but really good. When I came by the next evening to get some almonds, Chris remembered me and asked where I ended up going. I was blown away! I thanked him and told him that he had nailed The Piedmont. He went on to recommend a couple of other places to dine in Culpepper including a group of food trucks. Just goes to show that one good employee can make all the difference. Kudos Chris, you're a customer service NINJA! The deli still blows. read more

Safeway - the entrance to a safeway store - Grocery Near Me - Culpeper, Virginia

I started going to Safeway, Culpepever Va. when I was a small boy, with my parents and grandmother. I believe the store was at two other locations before being in Southgate Shopping Center... Over the years, it was a clean store, reminded us a lot of the old A&P grocery stores. The main thing is, the music was never loud and one could spend lots of time shopping with no distractions. This past month, it all changed, after going to Safeway Culpeper for over 40 years ... and we will not return. Last month, we drove up and there were a lot of new banners in the parking lot, announcing the store had been redone and it was a 'NEW' Safeway... We walked in and did not see anything different but a few new displays. But THEN, the music was so loud and overbearing, that we did not want to spend any time in this store anymore. We approached management and other staff, asking them to turn it down, however, they said that 'upper management' made it that way. I am a PTSD disabled military veteran, and I used to love doing our shopping in this store because it was quiet and did not get me shaky and nervous because there was no loud music, but NOW it is unbearable and it just wanted me to get out of the store! So I am warning fellow ptsd veterans, if you have hypersensitivity as I have, and loud music and noise affects you, do NOT go to this store. Sad to say, after all these years, we will not return, and will be looking for a much quieter store. Also, one other thing that is different now, is the fact that this is not a crowded store, in fact there have been times when we were the only shoppers, early in the morning, and there are no regular line registers open, but instead there are three clerks standing at the 'self checkout' stations. We are farmers, and we do monthly shopping, as we have for years before CoVid hit. When we do our monthly shopping we have two carts full of items. Now every time in the past that we have gone to Safeway Culpeper in the past three months, the clerks will stand there and expect you to self checkout, and they will watch you, never offering to open a cash register, until you absolutely throw a fit, and then they treat you like you did something wrong. There is no reason for three clerks to watch people check out their own groceries, especially with the prices of items, you would expect to have someone check out out and bag your groceries. Good-bye Safeway Culpeper, you have changed for the worse, become like so many other stores, with unbearable loud music and non-helpful staff. We will not return, sorry to say. read more

Nope, not going back to this Safeway. Ever! Store was dirty, employees I encountered were rude and unfriendly, and the prices are too high for subpar quality. Safeway is not Harris Teeter or Wegmans or Whole Foods, that's for sure. What happened to customer service??? It is definitely lacking at this store. If I want to shop at Safeway, I will spend my hard-earned money at the one in Warrenton, VA. They are the best!!! read more

8/20/22 @9:30 pm. I moved into this area recently, and this is the worst Safeway I've ever experienced. I've given it about 10 months to see if changes were made. The employees are almost all teenagers, which is fine, but they are all inattentive, literally playing catch with balls back and forth, ignore you to gossip, or on their phones. Today, my experience made me want to write this review. We were replacing our water jugs for our dispenser, and I was trying to tell the girl working self check out by the water that one of our jugs that I opened tonight was mildewy. I know it's a third party thing, and a refund for the jug I wasted tonight would have been nice, but I was only telling her so she could tell someone else it had been contaminated. It was hard to get her attention cause she was gossiping with older a slender girl with long black hair. When I finally got her attention and told her she looked at me for a few seconds, said "did you put it in the bin outside?" I said yes. She said, "okay" and turned her back to me and went back to gossiping. This girl was young, short, maybe 5'2, with shoulder length brown and blonde highlighter hair, very fair skin and freckles and light blue/green?? Eyes. She kept glancing back to look at me as I was obviously standing there to talk to her, and continued to talk to the other black haired girl. Neither of them helped me or seemed to care about the water contamination. I was not able to catch a name, no one was wearing name tags. Upon taking out two new water jugs home and opening them, they were also contaminated so someone needs to be contacted about this. I did my part trying to already Safeway. read more

This Safeway is one of the friendliest and cleanest. The store still looks new even though it's been open for a while now. Good produce and nice selections of foods not found elsewhere. If you need a change from your usual store, this is a good pick! Love the signature soups and sides. Good for a late-night or quick meal. Manager on duty was running the register because of lack of cashiers I'm assuming. I put my beer up first, she doesn't say hello just looks at me and scowls says "ID". I already had it ready so I hand it to her. After examining it for 15 seconds hands it back and finishes ringing up my stuff. Tells me "Enter your number." I reply "already did." Hands me my receipt I go on my way. If you are a store manger you start with "Hi, how are you today?" Not "ID." She acted like she was so full of herself for being the one in charge. Too good to greet her customers. Good stuff Safeway. High prices and your management needs to understand that the customers pay the bills. Not going back. read more

First of all I would like to say that the Safeway bakery in Merrifield, VA does a fantastic job of decorating cakes and so I assumed that Safeway hires professional decorators at all of their locations. So imagine my disappointment when I ordered a cupcake cake from my local Safeway in Culpeper VA for my daughter's baby shower and it looked like something a ten year old could have done. See attached picture. I still bought it because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to get another one made at this late notice. Very disappointing read more

Yes, Safeway is pricier then other grocery stores in Culpeper, but I stick to what is on sale and to items that I can't find at other grocery stores. Pros: -Can find items here that you can't find at other grocery stores in Culpeper. -The quality of their meats is probably the best in the area. -There is rarely anyone in line, so you never have to wait long. -They have Eclairs in their bakery. This is hard to find at other Safeways. -Since this Safeway doesn't do as much business, you can find some great deals in the meat and deli department. Most recently I got me a pound of grass fed organic beef for $2.50! Cons: -Cluttered in spots. -Could use some updating. -For the prices they charge, I expect the selection of Harris Tetter. -Their customer service desk and Redbox machine are hidden, not in plain view. -The bakery is not on par with other Northern VA counterparts, especially for a store this size. The bakeries at the locations in Northern VA are just about on par with Wegman's. Not so with this location. I also wish they carried more artisan breads that are freshly baked. -Poor store layout. The pharmacy being smack dab in the middle of the produce section is an eye sore. -If you need help with anything, don't expect to get it at this location. If I had trouble finding something, I could always find someone that could help me at other locations, but not at this one. -Other locations, they have also helped to load my grocery's into my car. I have never seen that at this location - NEVER! -The deli here has a limited selection. At other Safeway's, I could get all kinds of different meal options for dinner. The selection at this location is limited. -Wine & beer section needs to be updated, more choices. Overall: For the prices I pay at Safeway, I expect a top of the line grocery shopping experience and to be able to get everything and anything I need. This Safeway is limited when compared to other Safeway's in the area. That is why I don't think they do all that much business, even though there is only two grocery stores on that side of town (the other being Food Lion). This feels like a bottom basement version (or the black sheep) of the Safeways I've seen in the area. read more

Love my safeway. People are wonderful there. always helpful. Most of all love thier meats. Always can buy great meats at a great price. the store is clean. I volenteered at the senior center and found out safeway donnates thier bake goods Breads cookies to them. I seen first hand how the elderly are so greatful. Great people Great store. Linda read more
