Just wanted to update my review, which was, rightfully so, scathing. We as a community deserve better than this. Now this is totally our fault. We stopped in to shop and bought fresh made muffins from the bakery this week. We felt ill for about 36 hours, I'm just about better. I starting feeling unwell pretty quickly, like an hour. We've since eaten everything we ate that day and before (I had to eat porridge one night ), EXCEPT the muffins. They just became... off putting. Now this is all allegedly of course, I leave room for doubt. Just sharing my experience. But that's on me I guess. Have a good one. read more

This Safeway is very clean, COVID compliant and has a large selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Their deli counter is amazing as well, with various side dishes, fresh baked chicken, chicken wings, you name it, they got it! read more

Expired food throughout the store (meat department almost daily, yesterday it was potato salad). I found meat at least *and this is being conservative* 10 times that was expired in the last 2 months. One manager seems to understand while all other managers could care less. I used to work for the same company and we had to go through the stock every 3-4 days in our sections. If meat was going to expire in less than a week we would clearance it for quick sale at 50 -70% off so it would go quick. The meat department at this store has some of the rudest people I've ever seen. Not friendly or helpful at all. I hate to generalize by saying the whole store is rude, but about 70% of people in this store are not pleasant. Ok prices. Newer grocery store in Damascus with a friendly staff that is willing to help you put your groceries in your car. Just 4 U program you sign up for online makes Safeway a much less expensive place to shop. Love the Safeway app where you can upload all your coupons and personal deals on your rewards card. Gas rewards are great where we have a Safeway gas station around the corner to use your discount or now at any Exxon or Mobil. Wish this location offered free WiFi like some of the others do. Makes it easier to use the Safeway app while shopping. read more

You could say I have a bone to pick with this Safeway store. In fact, two bones. This store has better prices than the nearby Weis. And I haven't had too many problems until March 22 when I bought a chicken salad sandwich for my daughter. She ate about half of it, then discovered an almost two-inch-long bone. It's the longest bone I've seen in a 7-inch-long sandwich that should not have any bones in it. I googled to see if anyone had found any larger bones in a chicken salad sandwich, and the largest I found was a puny one-inch-long bone. She continued eating and found a second one, about one-inch long. That's when she stopped eating the rest of the sandwich, which is understandable. I would have stopped after finding the first bone. I have heard of people finding one bone in a chicken salad sandwich before, but two? It seems careless, to say the least. Good thing she caught them without choking on them. read more

This is for the delivery during the Covid mess Their young new delivery guy stole 4 bags of groceries, I discovered after examining the receipt after I could touch the bags. Called the store - couldn't care less. They fobbed me off on Safeway.com, and after 4 transfers and 20 minutes I was talking to a gum-chewing young woman who couldn't manage to read the words on a receipt. Total fail, and this guy STILL WORKS FOR THEM, SO BEWARE. This, on top of the terribly small fraction of their inventory they have available to choose from and tons of things being out of stock. Hello all, I have a damaged card and so I use Apple Pay for most of my purchases. I came here at your Damascus location to spend over $150 with them to hold me and my family with a weeks worth of groceries. Since my card has been damaged I could not make my purchase using Apple Pay, and instead of accommodating me with just my card number and drivers license to verify the card like every single business I ever went to, I am told I need the physical card which I don't have because it's damaged and my id which I provided. These are new time where technology has evolved to be able to process everything for us using our phones, not only that but when I have everything necessary to verify my identity I am still denied a purchase. I live in Damascus and have been coming to this location for over 5 years. Not only that but I spend over hundreds of dollars no actually thousands of dollars to my local stores to boost our community. This is unacceptable as a consumer, and now my family has nothing to eat till tomorrow when I am off work. I hope this gets resolved promptly or I will have to change my preferred grocery store moving forward. Get hip people! read more

We've been shopping here for years. If you are a savvy shopper the prices are the best around. But truth be told we love the customer service here. We feel like we are being treated like family. We have a bunch of kids and we are always welcomed with smiles and friendly help from customer service to produce to butcher bakery and seafood I've have had countless fantastic experiences here. This is a convenient, clean grocery store in Damascus. The prices are slightly higher, but you don't have to worry that what you purchase will expire in a week or a month like the other local grocery. The seafood, bakery and produce departments are staffed with knowledgeable, helpful people. However, they get a three star rating because of the culture of rudeness that has existed in the deli department for the last year, if not longer. I reluctantly buy deli products here, instead I'll drive to Mt. Airy Safeway for deli items. The staff turnover seems more frequent at the Damascus location, yet the culture of rudeness continues. I suspect this is fostered by the deli manager. I hope management will provide additional customer service training for the deli workers and I will never again have someone say to me, with an arrogant sneer, "do you want anything?" This is my second review for this location and it is worse than my last one. Does this store actually have managers? The bagels could have been used as hockey pucks. I guess the truck didn't show up. The cashier proceeded to throwing our food instead of bagging it and got mad when she had to pickup our roast. We had to bag our own groceries because she had no clue or was that lazy. This store never has enough people available to check you out. You can move around the store easily, but be prepared for a long line to checkout. I went early one morning to avoid lines and they had only one lane open and all self checkouts were closed! Produce is usually not very good either. If you have a different shopping option DO NOT go to this location by no means at all. On August 15 I called the bakery to ask what time would they be open 'til because a friend of mine preordered and purchased a cake for me for my birthday. Upon arriving at the store the bakery was closed but he had left my cake on the counter. As I was walking to the registers to inform the staff that the cake was pre purchased I was met with 4 different employees. The ASM Mr. Boga then began to accuse me of trying to steal the cake. I produced the receipt and was still being accused. Customers were looking at me and I was very embarrassed and have anxiety. The emotional distress that I had to endure was totally unacceptable. One of only two full grocery stores in the immediate Damascus area. Prices might be a little higher than Weiss, but I feel they have better quality items too. Store is about to change locations to a newer facility, with a more modern feel, more modern amenities. Seafood and Bakery departments are special standouts - the bakery particularly makes amazing doughnuts and cakes. I much prefer Safeway over Weiss, and generally seek Safeway out wherever I am. When they have sales, they are hard to beat. read more

Do not bother going shopping for Valentine flowers at Safeway in Mt. Airy, MD. Apparently, they do not want or need your business. The staff in the flower department don't want to wait on customers and they just throw flowers together (breaking and bending them) if you ask them to make an arrangement. They are preoccupied with texting on their cell phones or avoiding customers. I witnessed a gentlemen who actually had the guts to try to address the issue with the main staff member there and then the store manager. They were completely out of babysbreath to add to arrangements. It's Valentines ~ they know people are going to be buying flowers. BE PREPARED PEOPLE!!! There were quite a few men standing around waiting to get help with getting Valentine flowers, who were very frustrated. I throughly enjoy every shopping experience I have at this Safeway location. The staff is attentive, friendly, and efficient in assisting me when needed during my shopping trips. The produce, my favorite part, is always neat and fresh! I love the meat and seafood counters. They are clean and well taken care of. I would highly recommend this location to anyone in the surrounding areas. It is a newer and larger Safeway than most which makes the shopping experience even better! read more

Very happy with this grocery store. I shop at different times of the day/week and have always found the store clean and stocked no matter what time I'm there (except for a few late night runs when the produce was a little scarce). I particularly wanted to say a good word about one of the employers, Vicki. I often see her stocking in the produce area or sometimes as a cashier when I shop at night. She is ALWAYS so friendly and asks if you need help finding anything. She makes the trips so pleasant and I look forward to the days I run into her. Overall I'm very happy with Safeway's new location and setup. And the staff is great too! read more

If you want things like fresh bread or fruit, then go here, because you can tell the difference in quality between Safeway and Weis. It's night and day. However, for your same-old groceries, it's too expensive. It's stupid expensive. I don't understand why they can't compete with prices on your basic needs. The problem with Safeway in Damascus is the same as those stores run by inexperienced managers, they don't order the right quantities and in time to replenish their stock. Case in point, i have had to repeatedly ask to have the Pepperidge Farms Cinnamon raison Wheat Bread to be stocked. They are either always out of it or it runs out before the after work crowd stops in. read more

Staff enough people to checkout. To the cashiers, it's not the customer's fault that your line is backed up because you are the only register open and then have the nerve to get an attitude and say you need help bagging MY groceries because your line is long while there are other workers in the store walking around trying to act as invisible as possible. Infuriating!!! Also I didn't make the reusable bag rule so it's not my problem that your line is slow b/c I have to use the dang bags or else pay for plastic which I'm sure is much more convenient for cashiers to check and bag. Don't charge me for plastic and I'll be more than happy to not have to drag those reusable ones in the store. Rude lazy staff added with high prices is not a good fit for me. I'll be shopping at Weis or Giant from now on, the cashiers at those stores have no problem greeting the customers, checking and bagging, and "gasp" even asking if I need help out to the car to load my purchases. If you're going to charge an arm and a leg for groceries at least check them and bag them without requiring me to assist you or change your name to Pak n Sav and lower the d*mn prices! read more
