Still one of favorite ice cream spots. They changed their name to BROWN COW. So maps and other programs may show things differently. Also, they have a rule against having pets. I think something happened before. Regardless, I don't have a dog and it doesn't affect me. What matters is the ice cream. They get the milk from Guernsey cows which you can visit at certain times. The milk is super creamy. As a result, the ice cream is thicker and creamier than others. I like their creamy flavor if you like plain. They circulate flavors and recently tried their strawberry which has chunks of strawberry and has a nice flavor profile. They are right off the road so easy access. They have picnic benches all around and a playground for kids. Certain times in Spring/Summer, there's a flower field to look at. The service is good. Never had problems. The inside is rustic and simple. The main thing is to get the ice cream which is worth it in my opinion. It is a farther drive for me, but the quality doesn't compare. We had tried a lot of places near by and we still find this one as the superior one. read more

The ice cream was admittedly delicious, but this place left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth as far as service and atmosphere / family-friendliness. The staff was not very kind or welcoming to our family, and they did not, as a rule, allow samples :( which seems silly for an ice cream joint. They also have a no pets policy, which we can understand inside the store, but they wouldn't even let our dog get out of the car on his leash in the gravel parking lot, much less in the grassy area by the picnic tables where we hoped to all enjoy our ice cream together. Best ice cream in the state! Every flavor I've had has been delicious, including the dark chocolate. (I find chocolate ice cream is often chalky but not at Woodbourne.) The you-pick orchard is great, too. It makes for a fun late summer or early fall date. read more

This review is for Woodbourne Creamery which is at Rock Hill Orchard. I have driven by this place many times, but have never stopped until now - Montgomery County was having an Annual Farm Tour and "Rock Hill Orchard and Woodbourne Creamery" was on their list. I wanted to try their ice cream. Normally, I usually visit Jimmie Cone when in the area. From Ridge Road (Rt. 27), Woodbourne Creamery has two entrances - you can enter from either one. Even though it may seem like you can't find a parking spot, just keep chugging along and you will come across an empty spot somewhere. You are parking on either grassy hills or gravel. As you face the building, you will see signage for Rock Hill Orchard on your right and Woodbourne Creamery on your left. However, to purchase from the Creamery, you first have to go to the right. On the right-side of the building, you can view what is being scooped today on a whiteboard. On the day I visited they were serving Vanilla, Strawberry, Dark Chocolate, Andes Mint, Chocolate Chip, Cookies and Cream, Black Raspberry, Orange Dreamsicle, Mocha Brownie, Verry Berry and Peach. They also had the following dairy free flavors: Raspberry Sorbet, Peach Sorbet, Pineapple Coconut Ice Cream and Mango Sorbet. Once in line, which went rather quickly, we ordered the Orange Dreamsicle on a cake cone and Dark Chocolate in a cup. It is here you pay as well. Some things worth mentioning per the whiteboard: * Cones come on top. * No pints of ice cream. * No lids for ice cream. They make it so you will eat it there - smart. Once I ordered and paid, I was informed that I could pick it up on the other side of the building. To the front left of the building, I went. As I watched and waited a short time, I saw where an employee would call out what you ordered, and you would then grab it from them. If you ordered a lot, it was placed on a plastic tray. Make sure you are there to pick up your order immediately as I saw one or two flies appear - maybe they wanted some of that ice cream too. During the time we were there, that place stayed busy, but it seemed folks were not waiting long. Picnic tables are provided. There is one close to the pick-up area, but that is labeled for only Seniors and Handicapped. Cow to Cone is what is listed at the entrance. The flavor I had was delicious - Orange Dreamsicle ice cream on a cone. The cone is then put in the cup and served that way. I tried to remove the cone and succeeded, but it was a bit difficult. Loved the fresh taste of the ice cream. Good to know this spot is here as I now have options when passing through. Visited July 2023. read more

Different fruits to pick depending on the season. I went in July and picked some peaches, nectarines, and blackberries all of which tasted sweet and fresh. I paid $12 and got a bag to fill with peaches and nectarines and a container for blackberries. It's not crowded and the grounds are beautiful. read more

Is it weird to say that I would go here for ice cream over any of the chain shops? The ice cream is creamy and fresh from the milk from their own farm. I highly recommend peach picking but apple picking was tough. There are so many bruised, rotted, splitting apples. I suggest wearing a pair of old shoes as it gets slippery and messy. read more

Great experience for a warm-ish November morning. There are still apples for picking and, of course, ice cream! We love picking up ice cream! We ate the ice cream and drank hot apple cider after picking. We picked two pecks of apples, and these will be enjoyed whole and for making desserts for Thanksgiving. I have driven by so many times, but always when I have to be somewhere or after closing. So, one of my new years resolutions was to finally get to try the cow to cone ice cream I've so often wondered about. Rock Hill Orchard did not disappoint! I tend to be a soft serve girl most of the time, but for hard ice cream that's not gelato, this is soooo creamy and delightful! You can read all about their Orchard, Creamery, and Guernsey cows on their website, which is very informative :) They are Montgomery County's only cow to cone creamery for starters. I am so excited that they are open all year. They offer changing seasonal flavors in addition to their year-round staples. For the Winter, they appear to be open Wednesday through Sunday noon to 5 [if this changes, I am sure they will update their website]. The ice cream is sold out of their farm market. The farm market is located right off of Ridge Road (MD 27), like five minutes from Damascus, and has a gravel lot for parking. There is an order and pick up window on the right side of the building. They offer cups and cones by the scoop (single $4.25, double $5.75, triple $7.00) and also Vanilla, Strawberry, Marshmallow Chip, Dark Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip by the Pint ($8) [these flavors may also rotate?]. We tried Cuppa Joe, Dark Chocolate, and Black Raspberry. We couldn't decide which was our favorite, they were all incredibly creamy and rich in flavor. The fresh everything really pays off haha I got a double because I wanted to try Dark Chocolate and Cuppa Joe together. It was almost too much for me because they are generous scoops (I'm not complaining, it was worth the personal struggle haha). In the future, I'll just have to plan my ice cream days and get singles to work my way around the different flavors :) We have definitely found a new favorite ice cream destination and are so happy to be able to support a local orchard/dairy in doing so. Just came for the ice cream and it did not disappoint. Super creamy and flavorful, obviously made right here farm to cone. Ice cream is served in a cup with cone on top ($1 extra) if you like. They also have options for syrups like caramel or chocolate. Our two single ice creams with cones were a little over $8. Beyond ice cream they sell pies, milk, apples, and (at least now, during October) whole pumpkins. Happy to come back sometime! read more

Corn Maze: There are two corn mazes, one that takes ~15 mins, the other that takes ~45 mins - 1 hour. It is unlike any corn maze I have been in before, first, there are numbered check points that each have trivia questions and two, the corn wasn't super tall so if you are a tall person, you might be able to see some of the check points. We did the longer maze, and it took us about an hour and was fun. They also have a number that you can call in case you get stuck, which I really appreciated and thought was a nice touch. Apples: Wow - there are many different kinds of apples that you can choose from! I was amazed with the choices. Other: -Ice Cream: def try it, it was great! -Apple Cider Donuts: you had to order them online ahead and couldn't buy there, but they were delicious. - Water: ok....this was the weird thing here. You could not buy water...I was SO thirsty! read more

Even with all the frost that occurred in 2020 that destroyed a lot of apple orchards in the area, Rock Hill was able to offer a really enjoyable experience. They had many types available in late September (red & golden delicious, Jonathan, Royal empire, honeycrisp, Fuji, and more - check their website!). For Covid, they required reservations online for Apple picking. I'm actually hoping this becomes the norm because it was super easy to plan a day around it! Plenty of parking and one way entrances to both parking and apple orchards. Woodburne creamery was awesome, and they also had cider donuts, which is a requirement for me to go apple picking. The only issue was that the Apple picking drive-in entry off the road wasn't well marked so we stood in line at the Woodburne Creamery, nearly missing our reservation. read more

My friends and I drove here on a Sunday afternoon from DC in late September for apple picking. It's an easy hour-long drive from the city, and there's no entrance fee. I loved that it wasn't as crowded as some of the other farms I've visited around the region. Apple picking was lots of fun, and we got some great photos. It was $10.50 for a medium bag of apples (ended up with around 10 apples). Downsides of the day: it was over 80 degrees and most of the apple rows had already been picked over but neither of those things could be helped. The ice cream and apple cider donuts were good! I also picked up some fresh ground beef and I can't wait to make a dinner with it. Next time, we want to cut fresh flowers and herbs. Maybe we'll come back in June for other fruit picking! read more

A friend of ours recommended we try Rock Hill Orchard, as an alternative to the usual nearby stop for ice cream. We were craving something other than soft-serve. Its a little bit further out of town, but definitely worth the drive. Apparently, they offer a number of things other than ice cream -- petting cows, picking berries or pumpkins, hay rides, things like that. But, who cares, they have ice cream! Since I didn't try any of that stuff, I can't comment on it, but ... let's talk about the ice cream. They have a good selection of flavours available, and also a few different sorbets, for those not feeling dairy. But, its a creamery -- and you should try their ice cream. Its made from local cows -- well, its not made from cows, but you know what I mean! -- which are free ranged, grass fed. I don't know if that's what makes it so good, but that's what I was *told* made it so good! They have about a dozen different flavours, which change a bit over time. I tried a double cone with their dark chocolate and blackberry, which went perfectly together. We drive by this place all. the. time. which makes life challenging because the ice cream is delicious and my five year old knows it. Ha! Apple picking is super fun here because you get the coveted wagon ride to the orchard and various types of apples (holy cow, there are a lot!). The true star, however, is the ice cream. it's insane. However, it has an egg base, so if you have an allergy, it's best to steer clear from temptation. This summer they started carrying an egg-free flavor, but they were out of it each time we visited. The new playground is excellent--- but I, and every other parent I bet, wish it were somehow covered. Great ice cream! Fresh, creamy, and full of natural flavor. The ice cream is made with milk guernsey cows which I believe gives it a higher fat content and a richer taste. The cows are across the road from the creamery stand and the pick your own farm. With covid, they do not allow you to go inside so they have a takeout window for the ice cream and the milk and a few other vegetables/fruits/pumpkins are also in the front for purchase. Once you order and pay for the ice cream, you walk around to the front where there is a counter with napkins and extra small spoons (good for the kids). You can see them scooping out the ice cream from the counter. The service is quick - they have a couple of people scooping. They have the standard flavors but they are all better than the standard, at least the ones we have tried. The dark chocolate is dark and decadent, the coffee is rich in coffee flavor and you can see specks of coffee beans, and the butterscotch tasted very fresh. Nothing artificial here. You can order one flavor per scoop and up to three scoops. Two scoops is plenty. Three is definitely a lot but still doable since it is that good. They have a nice amount of picnic tables and some with umbrellas. They also have a playground for the kids. The lot is gravel and grass for parking. The creamery is open year round and it is that good that you could enjoy this ice cream on a cold winter day. Worth the drive from the beltway. Closes in the afternoon though so check the hours before you go. read more

I was excited for our first real outing since the start of COVID. I've been eyeing the orchard/creamery for a long time now, and we finally made reservations that worked with the little ones nap schedule. But our big outing ended up being pretty disappointing for a number of reasons. Here is my list of grievances: 1) the check in process was SO slow. They give you fancy passes that you can save to your apple wallet, and then don't scan anything. Looking everyone up takes a bit longer. We had chosen one of their last reservations, so I was already a little nervous about getting to do the maze, see the cows, pick apples, and eat ice cream before they closed. 2) this place was PACKED (which probably contributed to #1). It is big enough that it was still very easy to keep COVID-appropriate distances from other people (except in the corn maze), but there were still a LOT of people. The grounds are big enough that you have to drive from one activity to another, which just adds to the amount of time and difficulty, toting children around. The crowds also probably contributed to my last (and most important complaint) 3) after we picked our apples, we went to stand in line for ice cream. But, there was no line. Because at 4:30ish they had already shut down the creamery next to the orchard. The buzz seemed to be that they had run out and you could get some at the market on your way out. The ice cream was most of the reason I had chosen to come here over a different, more convenient apple orchard. And, of course, the line at the market was HUGE. So, we left with no ice cream, having rushed our way through all their offerings to feel like we got our $12 worth (we didn't). I honestly just wanted my daughter to see their cows and eat some ice cream...instead I spent almost $30 to come home annoyed, with just about a dozen apples to console me. read more

My friends and I visited Rock Hill Orchard for the first time after finding it on Google maps. We are already picked berries at Larriland Farm that morning, but we came to Rock Hill for their amazing creamery! I absolutely adored their ice cream and the servers were so friendly. They encouraged us to try as many flavors as we wanted (until the line got too busy). One scoop is $3.25, two scoops is $4.25, and three scoops is $5.25. You can also do a waffle cone instead of a cup. The cuppa Joe flavor was my favorite-it had such a strong espresso flavor and you could actually see and occasionally feel the ground up coffee beans that were inside the ice cream. The sorbet was just the right amount of sweetness and had such a fresh strawberry flavor as well. I also liked the toasted coconut with chocolate chip flavor, dark chocolate, and ginger ice cream. Would definitely come back to this place if I'm ever in the area again! After 6 PM, the ice cream is buy one get one free, but I think this is only during the month of June. read more

I've only been to Larriland, so I can't really compare to other farms in the area but it's definitely a lot bigger than Larriland. I went there with a church group for activities for some kids, and they definitely enjoyed the apple picking. For apples, we got a lot of them in the second orchard we went to, not so much the first, which tended to be smaller and have more insects on them. The kids did enjoy the ride to the corn maze and the pumpkin patch, but what they enjoyed the most was the ice cream. This place is busy and is very over priced for what they offer. There are plenty of other choices in and around Frederick to get fresh apples, veggies, flowers, creamery etc.. I was charged $99.00 for 14 apples, a pie, 1 gallon of cider and 1 jar of Apple BBQ sauce. Totally ridiculous. Also, if you want to pick apples you need to make a reservation online. So we have always gotten great milk from Rock Hill Orchard from the Montgomery County Fair and last week we decided to visit the farm. We drove from Ashburn, VA which is about an hour and were really excited to be making the trip. However what we got was more than disappointing. First off we spent $55 for a large bag and a medium size bag which was pretty pricey. It wasn't too big a deal though because I kind of figured they would have a great picking selection. They told us there weren't many peaches left but there were still some and they had 3 kinds of apples to pick. Still I was good with that. To my wife and I's surprise there were quiet a few peaches left which we filled out medium size bag with. Once we eagerly moved to the apples we were very disappointed. You would expect with having 3 varieties there would be tons of apples but this wasn't the case. The apples to pick were pretty slim and the ones you could pick were super tiny. Still it was fresh picked fruit and despite being let down we both were still happy to bringing some home. Here is the worst part. Half of the peaches we picked were spoiled within 2 days. The other half within 3 days. The corn be bought from the market there was starting to spoil again only after 2 days. So essentially we spent $55 not including what we spent at the market and maybe $20 of that was garbage. We never plan on going back again. read more

Rock Hill Orchard is our preferred "pick your own" farm. The peaches are excellent. There is a nice variety of apples. The veggies have always been good, and the flowers are beautiful and (I think) a bargain. We usually begin our trip at the store for their homemade ice cream. On busy weekends they run out of certain flavors. In October we do the hayride and corn maze. Last year it took nearly an hour to get out of the maze. This year it was about 20 minutes. This year (Fall 2017), there were two mazes - large and small. They're well-done. It's lots of fun with clues to solve along the way. The pumpkin patch is excellent and there are other seasonal gourds. I think the prices are fair. Whatever I pay for peaches and apples is fine. This year I got about 10 pumpkins (small to medium size) for $9. The corn maze is a bit overpriced. It would be nice to have a discount for kids. My daughter loves to feed the calves. At 4 PM on weekends they bring milk bottles to feed the calves. It's a wonderful thing for kids. And we always make a final stop at the store for milk which is processed right there with milk from their own cows. They have baked goods, picked fruit and veggies and other miscellaneous items like honey. The staff are so nice and helpful. I've been to at least three other popular farms in the area, and Rock Hill is by far my favorite. read more

Many years ago I had a job in a homemade-ice-cream store and have made hundreds of large tubs of all flavors of ice cream. Rarely do I find that kind of ice cream anywhere--but you got it right! :) I had my daughter's girl scout troop come here 2 years ago, and they all loved it. Such an educational visit with the info posted about the Guernsey cows, too! My daughter loved feeding the calves pre-pandemic. It was really nice to get to pick up milk at the top of the hill late spring/early summer this year. If it's something that can be done again ever, even for super limited hours for dairy-pick-up, if you think there's the demand, it might reduce crowding at the bottom of the hill near the store. read more

Cutest little farm, ice cream shops and play area! I wish we had spent the day here instead of the largest farm a few minutes away. We stopped by because we needed to buy local apples for the week. They're were selling them at 2.39$ a pound I believe. More pricey than the farm near our house but that's alright. We also got two scoops of ice cream which came out HUGE. It was a surprise to see how big the scoops were. The flavors were delicious. We had two fall flavors but I can't remember which ones. We sat at the tables by the playground and enjoyed peace, quiet and ice cream. We were at the large farm right before rock hill and we're super overwhelmed. Every year our family goes to Rock Hill Orchard. We get on the hay ride, pet the cows, pick out pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, and complete the corn maze. My family and I came here to try the ice-cream. We are a large family 8, with multiple food allergies. We avoid dairy in our diet, except for goat cheese because most of us can tolerate it. We usually eat dairy-free. We tried this ice cream based on it being local, grass-fed cows, and A2. We are fully aware that it is not necessarily that we are allergic to dairy, but it is the way cows are fed and how it is processed. I am glad to report, no one had any reactions. The ice cream was by far the best ice cream my family has ever tasted. It was so creamy and flavorful. The portions were large. Our family tried strawberry, cookies n cream, and caramel.
