I would rate their claims department as a zero star if that was possible. I have had a claim since June 27th 23 and till this date, September 29th, 2023, my car still sits damaged with cobwebs now growing on the damaged parts. I have made over 33 phone calls to my assigned adjuster with not one single return call. I would never recommend this company. I am now working the Illinois department of insurance regarding many violations that they have done and now attempting to charge me storage fees for a vehicle that they did not go out and assess for over a week. Everyday they don't answer calls after 3 even though they say they close at 4. I'm sitting in the Safeway offices right now trying to get them to settle a claim from a year and a half ago. Their drunk driver totaled both of our cars at 4:30am in March of 2013. They have been terrible about communicating. They don't return calls, they don't return emails, and the estimate to repair my Subaru was ridiculously low. Their driver totaled my husband's Jeep Cherokee, hitting it so hard that it was on my Subaru's hood, peeling the car back like a can opener. Thank goodness we were all inside asleep. I had a very similar experience as the others who have reviewed this company. I am in the middle of trying to get them to pay a claim from an accident that occurred almost two months ago because I was hit by a driver insured by this company. Because the other driver was at fault, I had to go through Safeway for my repairs and was assigned Janeth Capo as my claims representative. Unlike dealing with other insurance company professionals (Progressive and Infinity who were also involved due to the accident being with a rental car) this individual was often rude, curt and unprofessional. She hung up on me once because I was asking for details about how the process of the claim would work and I wanted to understand what I needed to do and what information was needed. Every single time I talked to her she would default to "Call your insurance company" when I started asking difficult questions. As a backup, I tried speaking to a supervisor, however if you call the Safeway office you will get voicemail. If you try to get bounced out to the secretary you will also likely get voicemail. It is exhausting trying to deal with this company and get any direction or answers whatsoever. It became my distinct impression that this company will avoid you and try to wear you down by not being responsive and rude so that you will give up and abandon your claim. I have had to resort to filing a complaint with the Illinois Department of Insurance to try and get this resolved. read more

Four days later after calling and emailing the insurance company multiple times a day with zero reply, I finally got ahold of the company (they were avoiding me) and I was told I had a new adjuster and she would be back in office the next day. These people really tested my patience but I remained pleasant while they dragged their feet and gave me attitude. I called the adjuster the next day and it was Tonesha Wilson. She was the most rude, inconsiderate person i've worked with. I've never worked with a more unprofessional insurance person in my entire career, and I work in corporate benefits. She refused to give me any information until forms were sent over, but I was not in formed they were sending 3 SEPERATE forms via mail until receiving them days later. I asked her to call me end of day if she had any more information and she gave me attitude and complained about having to call me and then said yes, and then never called me, big surprise right. I then received a passive aggressive email from her the next morning demanding that I fill out forms they sent via mail (that I received days later), that they never informed me about as I requested they email me forms. Never go with this insurance company. They may quote you a cheap policy but they will just charge you a ton in a renewal fee and then you will still have to pay your monthly insurance payment. After doing the math this means I would pay an extra 110 dollars for the year for insurance. Knowing that I will go get quotes from other insurance companies and just go somewhere that will cost me at least 110 extra a year since I know that is what I would pay if I stay with Safeway. They would not honor the estimates from the shops i visited. They offered me about 40% of the amount that the auto body shops of my choice estimated. This company gets a bad rap. I've had Safeway for auto insurance for my vehicle and my two children's vehicles for several years and I have never had an issue with them. I recently had an accident - my first in decades - and it was handled very professionally and very efficiently. Yes, Safeway does recommend body shops for you to take your car to, but you don't have to use one of "their" body shops. I used a body shop for my car repair that I picked and the Safeway adjuster worked very well with them. The out of pocket cost to me - including my $500 deductible - was only $800. The total repairs came to over $6,000. The claims adjuster and the customer service rep (Ms. A Chavez) I worked with were both good @ their jobs and fair. This company deserves 0 stars. I am not insured with this company, but I was involved in a collision with one of their insurers (I hit the jackpot of shit-storms with this incident). Since I was not at fault in the collision, I had to go through Safeway to have my car repaired. The agent I was assigned, JANETH CAPO, was unprofessional and insincere and there was nothing I could do about it. During one particular phone conversation with her, she repeatedly kept telling me to "just call my insurance company" (which I would have gladly done if I had full coverage with State Farm) over and over after I clearly stated that would not be an option for me, and that I would like to speak to her supervisor. She told me, after I had to ask a few times, that I would be contacted by a Claims supervisor, by the name of Joanna, within the hour and she hung up, not even waiting for a response from me. Needless to say, I was never contacted by a supervisor, and could not reach anyone after trying to call back on their main phone line (during their hours of operation). When I call Safeway's main telephone line a few days later, after a few tries and holding for 15 minutes and leaving a voicemail, I was able to reach the operator. The operator was terrible (not helpful and told me to call my agent and would not transfer me to a supervisor.) The agent that was assigned to me, Janeth Capo, is almost impossible to reach on her "direct phone number." Even after repeatedly calling the office for a supervisor to speak with, the main line becomes unavailable and a voice recording states that their office is closed (I've received this recording during their hours of operation after calling their main line numerous times on a non-holiday.) The bottom line is this company was EXHAUSTING to deal with; they are unresponsive to phone calls and voicemails. When it finally came time for repairs, Safeway's ESTIMATES are so RIDICULOUSLY LOW that you are practically FORCED to go to one of their listed auto body shops because other shops cannot work with the estimate. My own insurance company and my auto body shop strongly ADVISED ME TO REACH OUT to the IL DEPARTEMENT OF INSURANCE with my situation, which I did, but I wish I had done SO MUCH SOONER! Don't deal with this companies shit, serve it back to them and call the IL Department of Insurance if you feel like they are finagling you about; for a while, I honestly thought that the minor damages to my car would never get repaired by Safeway (maybe they thought I would give up if they drew out the situation long enough)! This whole fiasco with them should not have taken as long as it did to get resolved (just over 2 months). I was rear ended by a safeway driver and told that the driver accepts fault (as he should) . I had my car taken in to get a quote for repairs. Got a quote, submitted to safeway, approved. However, the repair shop would not give us an apt to get the car fixed so i had to go elsewhere. The collision center stated the actual damage was higher and stated they would do a supplemental claim to cover it. Now, after having my car about 2 weeks and me owing for a rental, safeway is saying they will not cover the supplemental or rental. The collision center wont give me my car until safeway pays, i literally got hit TWICE. this is ridiculous and i want my car back and safeway needs to deal with the collision center directly. this is horrible read more

On January 19, 2019 my vehicle was damaged by a wheel that had come off of another driver. At the scene of the accident the police officer in charge verified that the driver of the other vehicle was insured by Safeway policy #2498600ALPP004 and informed me that I should contact them regarding damage to my vehicle. I reported this to Safeway on 1/25/19. The reason for the delay was that I waited until a copy of the police report. I gave the Safeway representative all the pertinent information from the report including time and date of the accident, the other drivers name, address, drivers license number, Safeway policy number, and vehicle Vin number and was assigned a claim number by them. The claim number was 1113509-AL. I was told that they would get back to be after one business day. After several business days passed I called them and was told by Kimberly Wyles that they were investigating whether or not the driver in question had coverage at that time. The question I have is how the officer at the scene was able to verify at the scene that the driver had insurance if insurance was not in force. It would seem that if he had not been able to verify insurance at the scene he would have charged the driver with driving without insurance. He did not. With the information I provided Safeway should have been able to instantly verify whether or not insurance was in force. So what were they investigating? On Feb. 5th I called back and Ms. Wyles informed me that they were denying coverage as the driver was not insured with them. So again, my question to them was how was the officer at the scene able to go onto his computer and verify that he was covered, when Safeway says he was not? I asked Ms. Wyles this and she refused to discuss it stating "privacy" concerns. Quite frankly I do not trust anything she has told me. Why is she being so secretive? Why the need to "investigate" when they should have been able to determine coverage instantly? This entire experience has a rotten smell to me. What is Safeway hiding? read more

Safeway is advising me to take my car back to this shop to get it fixed and is not covering my rental or any charges until they want to decide it was the body shops mistake.
