That episode in my life left me with a phobia of the dentist (to this day the smell still gets me), as well as an occasional recurring dream of the dentist holding up the scariest cuddly toy of all time above me whilst I was knocked out by the gas. So, when I recently ruptured my Achilles and had to go in for surgery, I was (hopefully) understandably a little bit nervous, and more than a little hopeful that I wouldn't come away from my second stay in hospital with any lasting psychological scarring. I entered St Andrews at 6.55am, reported to the extremely friendly reception staff and was admitted into the hospital and taken up to my room. Happily my private health insurance warranted me a private very spacey room, where I was prepped up for surgery by more very friendly nurses. After Surgery I woke in recovery and after talking jibberish about Harvest Box nuts to a nurse for a couple moments, passing out, waking up this time slightly more coherently, and being given the all clear I was returned to my room and immediately handed a delicious ham and salad sandwich, but more incredibly - a small Dixie Cup of delcious Golden North ice cream which I think stands as probably the best thing I've ever eaten. The following night and morning passed in a blur of medication, hourly obs, some actually quite tasty hospital food, visits from family and friends - but the enduring memory I have is that of the kindness of the nurses. No matter what hour of day or night they were there, and not just there in a token kind of way. In the end I shouldn't have worried about leaving St Andrews with psychological scarring - all I left with, was a repaired achilles (and a sweet moon boot) and a couple new friends.

I first came here as a kid with my Mum who would donate whole blood once every three months. Things have changed now and you can donate plasma once a month now. You can even keep track of there mobile services that travel all over Adelaide metropolitan area. I have donated ever since I was able, this being the ripe old age of 16. The wonderful volunteer staff, all of who average around 70 years young, will seve you a treat for your service at the end of your donation. This includes a very generous allowance of a Coopers Pale Ale, but they have soft drinks and juices. Get them on a good day and you can get yourself a sandwich or a piece of cake. This depends on what has been prepared for the day. I can never go past the cheese and biscuits though.

After navigating the car park relatively easily, I was met at the lifts by an extremely helpful volunteer who helped my find my way to my appointment. It was very modern and simple to get to where I needed to be with text messages to help along the way! Well done to all the staff there doing an amazing job all things considered

Attended the Emergency Department for a mangled foot. Now…read morethis a private hospital and the health funds do not offer reimbursement for this service. They certainly should but any excuse to keep our hard earned money in their hands they will endeavour to find Nevertheless the service I received during a very busy day was outstanding. Since my problem was orthopaedic and there is a Sports Injury / Orthopaedic Clinic on site when I was eventually seen by the ED doctor I was quickly referred to the right folk. Again this is a busy place and not all the patients were as tolerant as they should be. Regardless all the staff were kind, courteous, compassionate and professional. The clinical education and treatment was outstanding. So if you have $380 and want top quality care it's worth the cost. But do be nice to the staff. And remember they will be patients there alot sicker than you.

And what did ever happen to all the emo kids who used to hang at the malls balls? I guess they're street preachers now.. No matter the reason, I enjoy giving blood. Not only do you get a comfy chair and a lovely person bringing you drinks, but you get food after! The new centre feels like an airport, with it's high ceilings and modern interior. I especially like the red and white used throughout, and tiny "cell shaped" tiles used on the toilet wall emphasise the blood theme. I don't donate as often as I should. But when I do, a short walk down Grenfell street to Haigh's in Adelaide Arcade is always a tempting reward for my generosity.

A great time to donate is before work; it's generally quieter and after the donation you can read the paper and grab a snack from the great range of refreshments to make sure you're feeling A1 before you start the day! There was an elderly gentleman who was also checking to see how much longer he would be waiting and he has been there 4 hours, while another patient was told after waiting for over an hour that his dr had left for the day. Seriously unorganized, I can understand that some appointments can take longer but these waiting times are ridiculous and it seemedas though it was across several doctors.

It was purpose built not that long ago so it is nice and new on the inside with all the features to make your stay more comfortable. They definitely get through the workload quicker than the hospitals. They offer opthamology, oral surgery, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric, plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. In and out in a day and all in nice facilities. Worst part is the parking. There are only 2 drop off / pick up parks out front and very minimal parking other than paid in a high priced city car park. Make sure you have plenty of coins with you in case you are lucky enough to get a street park as it will be ticket parking too and limited time.
