I stumbled upon this place once while I was a little lost passing through East Boston, and figured I would stop in for a bowl of Pho. Maybe it was just timing, but the bowl was one of the best I have had in Boston. I've been back several times since then, and things have been a little mixed, some better than others, but all in all, this place is as good as most of the Vietnamese spots in Chinatown, and sometimes better. It can feel a little dive-y, but service is sweet (though not always swift), it seems to be a husband and wife running the place and everything is made to order. Pros: this is my first Boston restaurant and it was delicious comfort food! The broth was different from some of my other experiences but it was a good different! I got there usual pho with rare steak and it was a good quantity at the large (so I assume the extra large would be even better if you're hungry.) there are a lot of locals that come to this particular restaurant and they raved about the food and the familial spirit of the staff. More importantly, I had a strange incident where a big fly took a suicide dive street into my soup and died even before I got to eat one bite. The waiter saw what happened and without question took my ball away and gave me a new one free of charge. That my friend is good service! Cons: The place is pretty small so I can see it getting crowded fast but it was not an issue since I ate in the evening. My bf lives near East boston, so this is pretty much the closest pho place we can get to without paying that toll! The first time i came here, i wasn't sure if it was my stomach or the food..but i wasn't feeling that good after...I came again because i needed a cure for my hangover, and decided that i should give this place another try...and I was okay, not stomach problems. The guy that works there, i think he owns it, is really nice, i heard him asking how is the food to everyone and really waiting for their response to see if they actually liked it instead of just jetting off. This is a gem located in east Boston. I was searching for the best Pho in the area. After reading someone's comment that it was the closest to the food in vietnam, we headed over. The food is wonderful !!! I called them 1 hour before I got to the restaurant to order the Lobster plate since I know they have to buy fresh lobsters and prepare them for us. Delicious Vietnamese food! We got the Vietnamese pancake appetizer which was amazing with a fish sauce dipping sauce, fresh shrimp and chicken mixed in, and topped with fresh green basil and mint. Then my friend got the pho and I got curry noodle soup and both were delicious! The waitress took the time to explain the different add-ins to us and how to eat our soups, and she seemed genuinely interested in making sure we enjoyed our meals! We forgot to mix in our bean sprouts and she came back and chided us for our oversight - and she was right! With everything going on, Asian food is in short supply but high demand. One night I couldn't take it any longer and went on a hunt for some pho and found Saigon Hut. We ordered Shredded Chicken Pho, Spring Rolls, and A vegetable flat noodle and were given a vegetarian pho with tofu instead, which was very disappointing. The chicken pho had a very flavorful broth and plenty of vegetables inside. However the vegetarian pho which again, we didn't order...had pieces of fried, soggy tofu which weren't appetizing at all. I took them out and just ate the vegetables which were plentiful. The broth was tasty but the tofu wasn't good at all. The sauce that came with our little take out bags was a mix of hoisin and sriracha which was great considering we couldn't make our own mix in the restaurant. Lastly the spring rolls...I expect a good mix of vermicelli noodles, spring, some cabbage and maybe some Thai basil or mint, and instead it was a thinly sliced piece of shrimp, a little lump of noodles and the rest was cabbage. I know restaurants are struggling right now so I can cut them some slack. If we decide to order again I hope they get it correct next time. We thought it was soo good, but has gone down hill, and tonight, they all of a sudden charge $16 for pho? $38 for two pho and an appetizer... no receipt or anything and just said their prices are higher even though everywhere I've looked I haven't seen anything above $13. Mind you, it use to be $10. The noodles were packed at least in the beginning of the day, and the broth wasn't even hot. Just a disappointment. Don't think we will be going back simply because the price doesn't match the quality and flavor of the food. For anyone who does order there for pick up, just make sure you are asking for the prices so you aren't surprised. They have a million different menus between Facebook and Yelp here, and none of them match to the price that we even paid. read more

We tried three dishes: special Pho noodle soup, luc lac beef with rice, and vermicelli noodles with grilled pork. Food is terrible and overpriced, service is really bad. This is not an authentic Vietnamese restaurant and also beware because this place will try to overcharged you for everything. They automatically charged 16% for the service fee although we only had 3 peoples. They also charged us a credit card processing fee which is totally illegal in Massachusetts. The total of our 3 dishes was 57$ but some how the owner charged us almost 61$. When we ask the lady just said "oh sorry! I didn't know that" and claimed it on her calculator. We literally spent 30 mins to explained to her and show her that the way she calculated the bill is wrong. Who knows how long have they been doing this... Just BEWARE AND NEVER COME to this restaurant. Such a shady business. They need to shut this place down. read more

Best Pho in Boston! I come here all the time and am never disappointed. I lived down the street from it for years and have never tried it until one day my friend recommended we go there. Now, it's our go to Vietnamese spot for whenever she comes into town. And the owner is really nice too! She always makes sure we have a great experience. The atmosphere is great too. Somehow they charged me $39 and overpriced every item I ordered? I had left my wallet behind and just grabbed a 20 spot....when much to my disappointment the total ran to $23. I apologized profusely...but the owner was pretty cool and told me no problem just catch up next time. Huh? Needless to say when I got home I grabbed a $10 and went back to settle up. I will update my review when I try some Pho. This neighborhood spot is non-descript but when you walk in, the smell hits you like a wall. Warm spices and steam fill the air - instantly, your mouth is watering. I can only assume these scents come from the beautiful pho broth. I ordered the chow foon and spring rolls - both good, but not outstanding. Well, the spring rolls were nice and fresh and came with a thick peanut sauce (which I thinned a little bit at home with soy sauce). The chow foon was ok! Love the food and people here! Its definitely a hole in the wall, on the dingy side - but the food is Always fresh, consistent and delicious. They also have the added bonus of being one of the only places in the area who offer a choice of vegetarian broth in their seafood and vegetarian pho. (EVERYPLACE else I've tried, even if they say they will, wind up giving you chicken broth in their veggie soup) but not Saigon hut - they are very veggie friendly and really - if you aren't looking for sparkling atmosphere but instead are looking for great, fresh Vietnamese food at great prices - this place is great. One note on service - if you are they type who gets annoyed waiting for the check - just do yourself a favor and just go up to the counter when you finish - they are pretty consistent about not bringing the check at the end. UPDATE 3/1/14: The owner of Saigon Hut has left and opened a new restaurant called NEW SAIGON at Orient Heights in East Boston (Bennington Street) - i don't know the quality of the original location as we can't stop going to the new one. Its a REALLY much nicer dining space, and a much larger menu - (also they've added Bahn Mi to their menu - something tough to find outside of Boston proper). So without having any criticism of Saigon Hut i HIGHLY recommenced checking out the new location. read more

Passed by it several times on the bus and eventually ended up eating there several times with my boyfriend at the time. Always ordered the pho bò, always delicious. I've been coming to this place for years and the management has turned over a few times. It seems like it gets progressively worse. I had the Pho dac biet last night and specifically requested less noodles (the broth is my favorite part). The bowl came out and was filled with noodles to the brim. The lady/manager clearly forgot to let the kitchen know. The broth was really salty and the meat was sparse. We waited for 15 minutes for the bill as the lady was on the phone the entire time. First of all I apologize in advance for ruining this for anyone because I really liked it here. My daughter lives literally right up the street and frequently when I'm at her house I end up ordering pho. When I got back from picking it up tonight I was sadly disappointed to find that my vegetable tofu pho had chicken in it. I called the restaurant and they apologized and asked me if I could come back for the right order. I felt it was a bit weird that they wanted me to bring the food I had opened back but I did as requested. When I walked back there I assumed it was to pick up a new order. I was asked to have a seat. A few minutes later another customer came in with an order of soup. She took his as well and asked him to sit. They were pretty busy packing up other take our orders but I sat and watched to see what they would do with the old soups. After about fifteen minutes they took both containers of soup to the kitchen. It was pretty obvious that they intended to swap the food we each took and repackage it. I immediately asked for a refund and she said they weren't going to use the same food but didn't know what to say when I said I saw her bring it back to the kitchen. The Vietnamese stuffed Crepe is perfectly cooked crispy yet a little slightly chewy with perfect texture balance. The accompanied vegetables are fresh and shrimp and pork tender and tasty.
